Terrible charter school. Administration, front office receptionist, along with the director of ops (it out naming people) lack professionalism, leadership, and fail to treat the students with respect. Bullying is serious issue at UDA, and administrators fail to protect and provide safety for the bullied students. Administrator is very dismissive when concerns are brought to their attention. High turnover on teaching staff, the great teachers they have leave due to the lack of support and respect from administration. For the benefit of the community and students, this entire institution needs a full revamp or close the elementary school also for good. Avoid this place at all costs, drive a few blocks down to better school, its worth it.

UDA is such a special place, and Im so grateful that my family stumbled upon this beautiful community. I have one school-aged child right now, and another will be starting TK in the fall. We have a great local school 5 minutes walking distance from our home, but we still commute from east county to attend UDA because its such a great fit for our family. My older child is very shy and takes a long time to warm up to other kids and especially adults, but they made instant connections with the staff, and have really found a second home at this school. The faculty and staff go out of their way to build connections with the community. There are well-attended and genuinely fun family events several times a year. I am always blown away at the incredible projects my child brings home from STEAM or Art class. I would recommend Urban Discovery Academy to any family looking for a solid education and a strong, empathetic community for their child.

I have one student at the elementary school and one student at the middle school and I am so happy with the changes I have seen this year. The new Principal Mr.Dyste and Assistant Principal Ms. Martinez have made a wonderful impact on school culture at both campuses. The schools are both pretty small, but I like that for my children as I feel like they are very known by all staff and get the extra individual support/attention that a small school can provide. I have been very impressed by the ASB and Network events this year and feel like things are going in a very positive direction.

When my son started kindergarten here it was the best school I could have asked for, since 2017-2018 when the school got a new director the school and the JR high and High School have gone downhill real fast. There is literally NO order and discipline. Half of the staff has no patience with kids, my other son that goes to the JR High has been bullied, harassed and even cornered in the bathroom multiple times where other kids try to fight him, and yes he is very quiet and reserved with good grades I can vouch for my son out of all people to be caught up in fights with bad kids it would not be him. He has endured so much to say the least, all of his elementary friends he started with moved to different schools because of this chaos. My other son attends elementary and I'm a done with the s*&% show I am pulling my kids from this continuation school they call charter. I really wish someone would look in replacing the head principal. Please don't send your kids to this school the steam and art programs are a joke they are run by amateurs. My son told me when the "teachers" are not prepared they ask the students to draw anything or read for the remainder of the class the quality is saddening.
Like some parents mentioned the turnover rate is alarming with the whole staff, not just teachers that should tell you something. It's not all bad, the other half of the staff are amazing, and I thank them for that, they treat us like family, that is the only reason I haven't decided to move on until this year.

This school has so much potential to be one of the best charter schools in San Diego, it just needs a new leader.

We have had kids in UDA for 7 years. The project-based learning is excellent and allows the kids to absorb knowledge through multiple routes. Parents are very engaged.

Sounds like one disgruntled parent has chosen to hide behind anonymity here, and populate this parent resource with lots and lots of inaccurate information. Unfortunate, as this school is so beloved by so many (highly sought after, full with a wait list, hard to get in). From my parental experience at this school it couldn't be further from the rantings alluded to below. My kids have thrived at UDA, the experience through middle school was and is positive and successful, netting students success in high school. My only criticism would be with SOME of the other parents, which is a common issue (based on experience at other schools). It's an amazing school community, breeds success.

New facility with pretty design and pallet. Academics in UDA middle school have suffered for years with continued changes and turn over. They are adding a high school, IDEATE without having a strong middle school. Focus for our elementary and middle school kids will not get better. Cohesive academics with a clear path to higher education is not apparent. Until we recognize that we have a retention problem we will continue to engage in a costly annual recruitment and hiring cycle, pouring more and more teachers into our classrooms only to lose them at a faster and faster rate. This will continue to drain our schools dollars, it will undermine teaching quality, and it will most certainly hinder our ability to close student achievement gaps particularly in math, technology and science. However, UDA does compensate for this by attrition of needier and naturally lower performing students. The attrition is achieved through an inequitable discipline policy coupled with inequitable rewards assuring that non desired students are clearly shown the exit. Rather than retain its better performing teachers that require slightly larger salaries and better benefit packages, it is more cost effective to encourage students that need stronger performing educators to find a school that may be a better fit for them. This is an ethical line that is crossed without sight of the moral impact. Our new facility is built on a culture of quicksand.

A bit difficult to answer this. We have been fortunate to have very good in fact exceptional teachers with only one impactful and " herendous " teacher in this regard. It seems that the turn over is very high compared to many other schools.

For historical information the post 6/8 is a MUST READ. I found much information I did not know about UDA.

Community: As stated several times, UDA has very involved families. Possibly a bit difficult to get into the inner circle.

Math Science : I have seen improvements with the curriculum but still lacking for middle school.
UDA does compensate by paying for outside science programs.

Performing Arts: A constant complaint from most of the kids that we are friends with. The new hire this year admittedly needs additional training dealing with students.

PE/Sports: The newly built UDA facility has limited space to really play multiple games even at recess. The physical education team really do their best with the limited space and resources they have.

Administration: The amount of principals in just the last three years is beyond defense. The principal from 2016 is not returning next fall. The 2015 principal stepped down after maternity leave and returned as the CEO. The principal from 2014 did not have her contract renewed. The principal from 2013 left to go teach in a different school. The 2008-2012 principal was let go directly after she ensured UDAs charter would be renewed for five more years.
New High School: Fall 2016 will be the first year UDA has a ninth grade. I do not understand how UDA will afford to have high quality teachers for each subject, an entire administration and principal for only one class of students. UDA has had a long journey to get its middle school achieving just within the average range.

The only constant at UDA has been its board of directors. It is the assumption of some that the decision to add IDEATE now was in part the catalyst to have one of them finally step down. With him leaving it is feared that also leaves a strong voice of reason.

This could be a good school for you. If the lack of organized sports is not a deal breaker as it is for us I would encourage you to go for a tour. If you have a girl that enjoys the arts or a boy who is well spoken and social plus you have ample time to volunteer and are willing to donate many dollars instead of paying private school tuition, UDA could be a goldmine of a find. You will meet some terrific people at UDA.

Good luck on your search. Keep in mind that all schools will have pros and cons and your kids will be most influenced by you.

Discipline: I have found personally that discipline is not fair. It often depends who your kid is, who is on watch, and school politics. My son is particularly rowdy and in need of more space to get his energy out. Even so, he wrestled his friend on the playground and his friend bit him. Neither students were suspended. The other parent received a phone call home. I did not. I heard about it from the other childs parent. I wish my son had told me. He didnt want to get his friend in trouble for biting. A different student was suspended for kicking his friend in the leg. Discipline has been a big topic among parents this last school year.

Teachers: UDA teachers have been upstanding for kindergarten to fifth grade. Middle school has been left wanting. Asking the parents for donations to improve teachers salaries was a red flag. I am ok with fundraisers to improve facilities, field trips and even better tools. Teachers salaries should be the first priority before anything else in my opinion. Not surprisingly the turnover is unusually high even compared to many other charters. In the four years we have been with UDA only one of my childs teacher will still be teaching next fall.

Our family unfortunately feels that It is best if we leave. We have many friends at UDA that we adore and hope to see often outside of school. UDA needs to stop with all the survey monkeys. Rigged data collection will not cover up obvious issues that are highlighted in your high turnover every year since the last board of education charter renewal. We have a new state of the art facility and still teachers are fleeing as well as students. The four star post below June 8 2016 is sickening. It did however help to clarify why we are fleeing. San Diego Board of Education do not let them build a high school.

It matters not if you call the principal a director or interim director it is fact that four people who led our school are now gone since the last UDA charter renewal, Cindy Kelley Moser, Lori Korvec, Megan Murray, Mike Seal. Teachers contracts are not renewed or they flee every year. Even in this new state of the art facility. The librarian may be the only remaining staff since UDA opened. Yet the board of directors remains the same.

Proceed with caution. Investors beware. Politicians be cautious of your affiliation. Allied charters keep your distance. This house of cards will come crashing down soon. SDBOE will be called upon to put aside political pressure. SDBOE will be asked not to extend this particular charter. It has used public funds to build a school of privilege. Last November UDA sent a survey to families which included a question that asked if we would be willing to pay tuition. UDA manipulates its lottery by imposing inconsistent disciplines, and utilizing a portion of its parent population to intimidate and prop open the exit for undesired families. I encourage you to take time to read through this site with knowledge that positive ratings are solicited by the school leadership in an attempt to "outweigh the comments of those that our school (UDA) is simply not a good fit for." Having not applied for other options we may be stuck for the time being.

Urban Discovery Academy has far exceeded my hopes and expectations. My son loves school, adores his teacher and has many friends! Although I hadn't even taught him the alphabet before kindergarten started, he is reading and writing stories like a pro now! I appreciate his kindergarten teacher's (Mrs.Romero Evans) dedication and her sweetness is beyond measure. The entire staff is warm and has become our "school family."

UDA is a great school for special education students. They will bend over backwards to provide services to the disabled (with independent education plans) or students with perceived disabilities. If your child is not in need of special ed services or may be gifted and talented, select another school. The school has a new director this year and she is a first time director who has teachers teaching students without a preliminary multi subject credential. Parents are very limited by the school administration as to obtaining information about how the common core is being taught to the students as a result of significant power and control issues with the board of Trustees President and Director. As a result, communication to parents is limited and if there are parent concerns the school refuses to respond to them in writing. That says it all in my opinion.

It's been great getting to know the staff, parents, and of course students at UDA this year. At this school we finally feel like we're part of a strong and diversified community that cares for the arts just as much as they care for the sciences. My child still attends here ONLY because of the friends developed over the years and am very much looking forward to this year being over. After graduation thank goodness we will no longer have to put up with the lies, deception and bullying from administration and mainly Board of Directors. I really hope for the families that will continue on after this year things get better. For any new parents proceed with caution.Try not to be blinded or fooled by all the pretty colors to come. i can not believe my daughter came home today talking about she has to use a porter potty for a bathroom. This school is horrible. Why. Really. What is going on. They claim it it wonderful but why does my middle school child have to use such bad bathrooms. The board needs to get it together. I want to believe in this school but when my daughter comes home and says she almost threw up because of the unsanitary conditions it is not good. Im taking her out of this school ASAP!

Well, we're off to a new year at UDA. Let me lay out the facts. The school currently provides a very good educational opportunity in an inviting and accepting community for your children. Actually it is quite exceptional in the latter regard and you would be hard pressed to find a better educational/experiential/social environment for your kids in a school. The new Director is very capable and motivated, both in expertise and attitude, based on my many interactions with her and I expect her to take off and excel from where the last one left off. That may be enough for you. However, you can't ignore the state of the parent community today. There are distinct groups of parents, some critical, some supportive, and many that are just either not interested or motivated to worry about those interactions. Setting aside anyone being right or wrong, it is simply a part of the community at this point that is a reality. Whether it matters to you or not is a matter of your interests. But we shall see how the Board chooses to proceed in creating a place where all parents can feel comfortable and secure contributing.

Home is where the heart is....that's my feeling about UDA. Yes, we recently moved to a less than perfect site and yes, it's not known how long we will realistically stay there. But neither a physical building nor location make a school; it's what is inside that counts. And inside, UDA has fabulous, caring teachers and an enrichment program that can't be found at other public schools. I'll be the first to admit that not everything about UDA is 100% perfect, 100% of the time. But I feel like if we parents can start from a place of appreciation for everything UDA DOES provide our children, we can more effectively promote positive change. UDA is more than a building. It's a community of educators, families and friends.....all who are committed to our children. Moreover, it's a community in which I feel very lucky and grateful to be a part.

UDA is on the move. Yes, changes are taking place! Some include: A temporary location, half days every Wednesday & a permanent new school in East Village (coming Fall 2015--excited!!) I feel that the changes are all intended to benefit and improve our students, teachers and community. I encourage all parents to get onboard, stay informed, volunteer, and be kind to one another. It's what makes our school awesome. My OPINION is that any negative comment regarding UDA may come from a person who does not receive change well. I choose to trust that the educators, staff, board members, etc have our children's best interests in mind. They have not let me down the past 3 years, in the midst of change. It is a part of life and I am using this opportunity to teach my child that. I am thankful to the dedicated and creative teachers who are the heart of UDA as well as understanding parents who stand by our wonderful school community. I am proud to be a UDA parent and thankful every day that my kiddo loves to go to school and gets all the wonderful benefits of being in a smaller charter school.

I am a parent of a student at UDA and was very pleased with the school for the past 4 years but was very disappointed this year with the fact that there was an intent and already a work in progress back in July 2013 to move the school site to a "temporary" location to an area that is not as desirable as the current location. I as many parents would of liked the opportunity if the information was disclosed back in July and not at the end of the school year (July-2014) to either decide to re-enroll or look for another school, at this time any and all enrollments in any charter schools are closed and now we have no other choice but to follow UDA. My only advice to other parents who are thinking of enrolling in this school is to try and get your facts but it is very difficult to get accurate and timely information on major decisions that ultimately affect the education of the children. I will definitely look for a new school for my child as soon as any enrollments become available. I believe that the information was not disclosed early on purposely so UDA would not loose any enrollment and be guaranteed the temporary location by the district just be aware out of a 10 I give it a 2.

I am actually a student at UDA, in middle school. Although I have no idea what really went on last summer, I can honestly say I am proud to be a member of this society. The changes that have been made were for the best and am very excited about the model of the new school. When I went to a public school my grades actually dropped and from being a perfect A student. I would get 60%s on my tests, and was not learning as much as I was in the years before at UDA. On my return, I brought up my grades and am actually learning things not only due to the fact that we have wonderful and understanding science and math teachers, but also now, that there are stable and excellent history and english teachers. Thank you UDA for making my day full of projects and fun learning experiences, I will always be proud to attend this school now and the further year I have left.

My kid and I love UDA! It is a great school with fantastic teachers and wonderful staff. The school offers art, performing art, science, physical education..... I only wish they could offer music class and a foreign language besides Spanish. I am extremely lucky to have found my kid a wonderful school!

This school is truly awesome. Not so small that it's under funded, yet not so big that a child gets lost. I am a single full time working father with a little girl. I need to depend and trust that my Childs school is academically and personally looking out for my girl. UDA gives me that and then some. The performing arts are absolutely awesome and the teaching style very unique and modern. I can't say enough to praise this school only that UDA is preparing my girl for thr modern world!

Academically this school seems great. We're new this year but the kids seem to be happy and thriving. I wanted a small school and a strong sense of community like our previous school. It is a small school but unless you're "in" the community you're definitely an outsider and made to feel incredibly unwelcome. The teachers and staff are wonderful and have been great and incredibly approachable. The parents on the other hand are not friendly or approachable at all. Forget welcoming small talk, they don't even smile at new parents. My husband and I have both tried making friends and had no luck at all. It's too bad too because we have a lot to offer and are more than willing to help both in volunteering and financially but after this first six months we certainly won't be volunteering or donating. At least the kids are happy.

As a parent at UDA, I find the 11/13/13 posting dismaying. There is certainly discord at UDA right now regarding recent changes at the school, and everyone is entitled to their opinions. Reasonable people should be able to have a mature debate about their differences of opinion. Accusing parents of making their kids suffer, or suggesting they should leave UDA, is neither helpful or beneficial.

I am very happy with the changes made over the summer. Although I liked the old principal and office staff - they always seemed scattered and unorganized. The office manager was always coming in late and making students who were there for a late slip wait. Another thing that I am very happy about is the new After Care program. The previous staff was a group of young girls that really just gave the kids paper, crayons or a ball. It was glorified baby sitting. The new After Care program has many more planned activities that the kids enjoy. Already with the fall festival this year, I saw a huge difference in organization and energy of parents that were happy to be there and help. I noticed some of the previously very involved parents no longer volunteer and didn't even bring their kids to the fall festival. I find this behavior so immature and the only ones suffering are the kids. They should just leave the school and attend one where they feel comfortable participating - it will benefit both their kids and them. My main concern now is where the school will move to, because currently they do PE 4 times a week at the park. Thank you to the staff for all the hard work so far this year.

There are many parents who hope there is a spot open for their child because they believe in UDA. They trust that their child will enjoy it here. There are many teachers that hope to join the UDA team as well. I am proud to be a teacher at Urban Discovery Academy! There has been change and the teachers and staff are doing the best we can to stay POSITIVE AND SUPPORT each other, the students, and the parents. Our school had some big changes this past summer, but as a teacher I am excited about moving forward and am encouraged by improvements that will support our project based learning and arts program. Change can certainly be scary, but it is also gives an opportunity to grow. I think as a staff we are more united and more empowered to move forward. This is a quality school of CHOICE. It was not a private school before, lots of misinformation in the recent comments. Unfortunate that a few parents with questionable motives choose to talk about this school this way. Proof is in the pudding. Quality leadership, quality teachers, teachers are HAPPY with changes made, happy, successful students. The few parents who are not happy, are just now discovering that the school is actually not managed or operated by them. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE WAY IT'S OPERATED, YOU CAN CHOOSE ANOTHER SCHOOL, PLEASE stop bashing the school.

Teachers are being intimidated and parents disrespected by the Board of Trustees. The leadership and motivations of the board have become particularly questionable in recent months. The Board has even recently changed their own bylaws so that instead of coming to an end of their term this year they have voted themselves to indefinite terms. Unfortunately, changing schools this late in the summer is not an easy task, but if you still have an option I would recommend going elsewhere.

Before this school became a charter school, it was a private school that had to close its doors due to "lack of funds," to put it politely. Now it has a charter and is forced to close the pre-school program as well as the before and after care. We have to stay this year, but next year we will go to a more stable school. If you are considering this school, don't.

I am extremely disappointed with this school. This summer the Principle and Administration were fired and the Preschool was closed. This all happened at incredibly short notice and with no reasonable explanation given to parents. In a school which prided itself on a strong community and parent involvement I feel this went against the entire ethos of the school. We will not be returning.

MY son has been attending Urban Discovery Academy for 4 years, and they have helped him every step of the way. The staff goes above and beyond to help children academically and socially. I am extremely impressed with the conduct of the principal, and her desire to make the school the best it can be FOR THE KIDS. My son had a difficult time attending school at one point, and Urban Discovery Academy worked with me and my son to get him to a point where he now feels EXCITED to attend school. Without the staff at UDA, my son would have had a very difficult time fitting in and feeling accepted. My appreciation for this school is immense. I agree about the lack of organized sports, and I think the school is making strides to include more of them. They also want to introduce the use of iPads instead of having the kids lug books around in their over-sized backpacks. It's a great school. Small classrooms. Comfortable environment. Wonderful staff!

We appreciate this school greatly! As a parent, who carefully analyzed many schools in the district, we were fortunate to have our daughter attend UDA. I confidently write that UDA is extraordinary. The school has a mission to provide a rigorous well-rounded education. In the process, it creates a loving and nurturing environment for our daughter to learn and feel confident to succeed. Over the past few years, UDA has made amazing improvements in their foreign language enrichment programs and after school activities. It has also implemented a healthy home style lunch program, giving families a remarkable option. It is a small community oriented school that provides personalized attention to its students. Our daughter s teachers have been wholehearted devoted to her growth and development, while making learning fun for her. The school s principal is a dynamic and amazing visionary who works closely with the staff and parents to make the school better. She cares deeply about the kids and about their families too. Our daughter loves going to school. This is a tribute to the dedication of the UDA teachers, staff and leadership.

We love this school for many reasons. Academically, we feel it is right on course with each grade level. Each child seems to be addressed with each of their own specific needs and the overall feeling in the classrooms is a sense of community. There is a big anti-bully campaign at the school and is looking at teaching students pro-active tools to prevent bullying. There is so much parent involvement and there are lots of parents that know the children by name. There are formal PE classes, foreign language, and art and this is during a time where other school are cutting back. We are very pleased to be part of the UDA family in middle school!

Good school if your kid is average. Lots of extra curricular activities. We pulled our kid out due to poor academics. Sports are weak also.
