When talking with other parents who have kept their kids enrolled in SDUSD, I consider myself extremely fortunate that my child was able to attend Innovations Academy this year and will be keeping him here until he graduates. We moved to San Diego 2 years ago and could not be happier we settled on Innovations Academy after reviewing all of the school district choices online and multiple in person. It helped that after we toured the school both of our girls immediately asked to start there the next day. :-) The ethos of the school, practical problem based learning in a supportive environment, and emphasis on family relationships and community, permeate every classroom and school activity. They have a dedication to exploring the world and go on field trips related to the projects the kids are working on EVERY MONTH. Riley Gray was an excellent first grade teacher who showed incredible kindness, compassion, and tenderness to her class (which I got to experience many times first hand as a volunteer) while getting them excited about learning. Alexa Pacheco went above and beyond what I thought was possible for a 4th grade class, and our daughter participated in a class congressional committee which developed and voted on laws, curating a realistic experience for parents traveling across the country during the gold rush, making a podcast, and learning interviewing skills by performing interviews of people at the mall just to name a few projects. Kristy Fitts and Christy Fullerton provide a spectacular 5th grade experience, including field trips to Sea Camp and Pathfinders ranch where the 5th graders have safe environments to get out of there shells, work together, and appreciate each other for their various strengths and help people work on their weaknesses. They have incredible projects on space and our environment and multiple electives the kids can choose from. Dana Anderegg teaching her 2nd grade class has a seemingly endless amount of energy and curated field trips allowing the class to explore the best parts of San Diego and learning about the importance of nature and habitats in the process. In short, this is a school I wish I could have attended, and am so glad my kiddos can. If you're even thinking this might work for your kiddos, come tour!

Last year, we had Jackie as a teacher, and she brought many of the same wonderful qualities into the classroom. She was kind, patient, creative, and genuinely cared about the children and their growth. She created a warm yet disciplined environment with clear principles, which I truly appreciated as a parent.

This year, we feel very lucky to have Alexa, who also has a thoughtful and engaging way of teaching. She explains things clearly, encourages creativity through projects, and brings both passion and professionalism into the classroom.

I had the opportunity to join field trips and seeing both teachers interact with the students made it even more clear how dedicated they are. We have been fortunate to experience two teachers who truly make a positive impact on children both academically and personally.

Innovation Academy has been an incredible experience for our family. Its the first school where I truly feel like there is genuine effort, care, and intention put into supporting my son as an individual. The collaboration between staff, teachers, and outside providers has been amazing their SPED team is open, communicative, and willing to work closely with our outside therapists to tailor the best possible support for him.

Makenna, his kindergarten teacher, was absolutely wonderful, and his second grade teacher, Rylie, has been equally fantastic. She is approachable, communicative, and always willing to collaborate and stay on the same page as a team.

Its refreshing to be part of a school community that truly values partnership with families and wants children to succeed in the way that works best for them. I honestly cant recommend Innovation Academy enough.

My daughter has Makenna and Cindy for the second year, since Makenna did the switch to 1st. She absolutely loves Makenna! I'm glad she stayed. With her too. Makenna and Cindy really care and you can tell! They get to know the kids and help them on an individual basis. They push the kids to be better in a positive way and help them get out of their learning comfort zones. My daughter won the teacher lottery!

We've loved being at Innovation Academy! The theatre program has been a major highlight. It's a performing arts program that doesn't over-emphasize performance (it's fun, & emotionally healthy...more laid back in a good way - thank you, Natasha! We also appreciate the support of the special education team. Thank you, Lisa. Finally, I've appreciated the hands -on & inquiry-based learning. Our child doesn't want to miss school!

IA has made such an impact on our lives. This is the second year for my two children. We came from our neighborhood school which was all I knew at the time. My older son had constant anxiety surrounding school. Stomach aches, crying, clinging to me as we went in etc. He was acting out while in class, and it got so bad he was acting out at home too. I was in a constant state of worry while he was there. I decided to pull him and do my research. Thats when I found Innovations. I finally have my happy, excited boy back. He WANTS to go to school. The teachers here are all so warm and patient. I love the positive discipline and the fact they arent stuck at a desk all day.

STAY AWAY! No backpacks allowed for middle schoolers after an incident of...... thats the first red flag. While the school may seem good at first, the problems become clear over time. They claim to practice positive discipline, but in reality, that means total freedom with zero accountability or consequences even for bullies. The director often resorts to victim-blaming instead of protecting students. On top of that, the academics are weak, and the overall environment is chaotic.

I have 2 children at this school and can't recommend it enough! We have been at IA for 4 years now and have always had really wonderful teachers and nothing but a great experience! My girls LOVE going to school and that is everything for me as a parent. My 4th grader literally cried recently when I told her our family was going to Disneyland because she didn't want to miss a half day of school!!! If that doesn't say it all!! The teachers at IA really care and are so supportive and encouraging. They provide an environment that really allows the children to grow and thrive. Social-emotional support is big at this school, which is really important to me as a parent. My children also really love the project-based learning. It makes it fun for them to learn with a more hands-on approach. We have experienced a couple SD Unified Schools and in my opinion, there is no comparison!

Alexa, 4th grade teacher, is just THE BEST. It is very obvious how much she genuinely cares about her students. She is passionate and goes the extra mile to offer them enriching experiences. She puts so much hard work and energy into teaching and is able to easily connect with her students. It is easy to see that they love and respect her as she always has kids around her. :)

My youngest is in Makenna's class for Kindergarten and she is equally wonderful!!! She is everything you would want in a kindergarten teacher.... patient, loving, positive, fun, clear expectations but flexible, supportive, and meets each child where they're at... She is just a gem!

Both teachers have excellent communication with parents. I always know what's going on with my kids and am updated regularly about upcoming events. They welcome parent involvement and there are lots of opportunities to help out if you choose to. The school is in a beautiful building with a great backyard area .... not blacktop with outdated play structures like many other schools.

If you are considering this school, you wont be disappointed!

Our experience with this school has been with the wonderful HLC hybrid program. I cannot say enough about the three wonderful, masters level teachers who run and teach the program. There are three multi-age classrooms with a lot of fun and exciting learning projects. If you have a kindergartner who is apprehensive about starting school, Teresa provides an absolutely wonderful and warm environment for them to warm up and enjoy their time at school. Her classroom is so joyful and fun and whimsical and provides just enough structure and flexibility for each child. A great classroom to set them up for a lifetime love of school and learning.

Innovations Academy is a hidden gem, a treasure hard to find. 3 years ago, I found out that Innovations Academy not only offers a 5 days program, but also a 2 days program, for homeschooled kid. The 2 days program, called Home Learning Community (HLC) is run by three amazing teachers: Ms. Teresa, Ms. Jill, and Ms. Jen, who respectively teach the youngest kids, lower and upper elementary, and middle schoolers. These teachers come with the expertise and leadership of educators, coupled with the knowledge of homeschoolers. The offer the best of both worlds. The teachers, over the years, created a wonderful inclusive community of parents and children, who, guided by a strength based, collaborative, firm, yet non punitive philosophy, develop social-emotional skills such as emotional awareness, communication of needs, problem solving, and conflict resolution. As a result, kids feel connected to one another, as well as the adults that support them. They feel safe to be themselves, they trust their own bodies, feelings, and judgment. Parents also feel connected and supported by one another, as they grow with their children. Thank you Teresa, Jill, Jen, and Innovations Academy for creating this wonderful program and community!

The 2 day HLC program is amazing. Teresa, Jill, and Jennifer are extraordinary teachers, kind and supportive. They do so many interesting projects with the kids and support their emotional well being. They also have useful advice for parents and work hard to create a community. My first kid attended for 6 years and now my second kid is attending in her third year.

My children have been attending IA for over 4 years and we love it! The teachers are fantastic as well as all the staff. Everyone is kind and helpful. Jillian Andrews is my sons favorite teacher. She just has such a positive attitude and makes learning fun for the kids. My daughters 2nd grade teacher Dana is an absolute star as well. She has endless patience and puts a tremendous effort into fun artistic projects. My daughter loves school now. I am very impressed by the academics in the school too. The math in particular is on a very advanced level.

My son started Kindergarten this year with Gaby. From day 1, she treated each child with warmth and kindness while holding them firmly to a standard of being Big Kindergarteners. Innovations uses a project learning approach, which means that they learned phonics, math, and all that in a social context. For math, they did "number talks", meaning that the children took turns sharing how they solved simple math problems. For phonics, they focused on how to move the mouth, how to write, and where to find the letter on the classroom. She also taught them sorely needed social skills like how to start a conversation. My son LOVES Gaby and his confidence has exploded. Innovations is a totally unique school and I believe it is the best in the county.

My family has been part of Innovations Academy since 2016. My kids are part of the Home Learn Community (HLC), which is a hybrid home school program, but we started in the 5 day program. Both have been great experiences for my family and fulfilled needs at different times of my kids school journey. The HLC has been the most amazing learning experience for my two boys. Teresa, Jill and Jennifer run this program with such ease and care. Their days are filled with creative projects that are engaging, fun and also thoughtful. Some of their favorite projects include putting on Shakespeare's plays, competing in Greek competitions, creating businesses for Kid City, building a boat out of cardboard and sailing in it across a pool, raising chicks. If you are looking for a home school hybrid program that has a strong community and support, the HLC is an amazing choice. If you are looking for a 5 day program with a strong social emotional component and hands on learning, Innovations Academy is a great choice for you!

Our experience at IA has been incredible. My kiddo has been here 1-3rd grade. We have loved all 3 teachers. This year he has Briana Rabb who has provided such a calm, welcoming and positive learning environment. I always feel welcomed to come into her class and help out which is a lot of fun. My son feels engaged and challenged with the interesting projects in her classroom. He loves going to school every day. IA is a small school so he knows all 50 kids in his grade. There is a big focus on social emotional and positive discipline which is so helpful for young children. It's a fun and welcoming community with lots of great events on campus.

The "exploration classes" offered are top notch. IA employs a full time teacher in: Engineering, Spanish, Phys Ed, Performing Arts, 2D Art, 3D Art, and Nature studies. I feel like we are at a fancy private school!

My son did kinder at our local public school and it was ok but not the best fit for him. He has ADHD and is very smart and was not that interested in the standard school worksheet type learning. When we came to IA in 1st grade they immediately recognized a reading deficit and got him an IEP (he's now above grade level). I know people at other schools fighting for years to get their kids this kind of services. I love that they are proactive and have the resources to make sure each kid is thriving.

Coming out of COVID in 2021, we were searching for a Kindergarten for my son. We applied but did not get into High Tech, and were not excited by the start time of our choice school (7:30am YIKES!). My friend mentioned that if she were to send her child to a school, she would go to Innovations Academy. When I checked out the school, the only program that was open at that time was the HLC. On a whim, we decided to apply and I have to say it was the best decision ever.

Teresa was my son's teacher for three years and am now my daughters. My son has moved up a class to Jill. We've interviewed and visited a ton of classrooms when we were searching for a school pre-covid and I have to say that Teresa is one of the most thoughtful and kind teachers we found. She is a teacher that understand the core of each child and know everyone's strengths and weaknesses and always strive for what is best for your child. Her classroom always has the coolest projects. This year, they centered their class around saving the arctics, last year they built a rainforest (and then built cardboard boats to race in a swimming pool) - I don't know any other K-2 class that do such cool projects.

Jill has been a great transition for my son. She is so caring and understanding but also has a higher standard for the older kids. As the students go through Jill's class, they work more on group dynamics, individualism, and developing a stronger sense of responsibility. She fosters an environment where students are encouraged to express themselves, support one another, and rise to meet new challenges. I've seen real growth in my son's confidence, social skills, and independence thanks to her guidance.

Overall, if you are looking for a school that has small class sizes, fantastic teachers, and a nurturing environment that truly supports each child's growth--I highly recommend checking out IA HLC program.

Im deeply grateful to Teresa Draguicevich for her remarkably sensitive and highly personalized attention to children. Sometimes it feels like Teresa knows the kids even better than I do. I can hardly imagine how she manages to observe and care for twenty children at once in the classroom.

One quality that resonates with me deeply is her unique ability to combine structure and freedom in the way she leads her classes. On the one hand, she offers gentle structure and clearly explains why its needed without it, children might drift. On the other hand, within that structure, theres so much freedom, and the children truly get to engage in what they love. My son always ran to school joyfully and thoroughly enjoyed his time there.

This is our second year at Innovations Academy and we couldn't be happier. Our daughter loves going to school and has received nothing but support from caring teachers and staff. The school embraces an experiential and project-based learning approach and provides a wide range of subjects beyond the core, plus extracurricular opportunities to round out the curricula. Personally, we like that parents can visit or participate in the classrooms at any time. The support staff is a wonderful plus, such as Samantha Hallor who provides compassionate counselling and Clara Escutia who supports ESL learners. Our daughter loves both of her teachers, Makenna George (K) and Sarah Beth Smart (1st), who both became very important to her. We also appreciate the strong leadership, sensibility, and clear direction of the school director, Christine Kuglen. We are really looking forward to little sister starting Kinder and joining her big sister at IA!

My kids have attended the HLC at Innovations Academy for years. Teresa, Jill, and Jen are the homeschool teachers and they really go above and beyond to support students and families and to ensure student learning is both joyful and authentic. They do a great job balancing individual student and family needs while encouraging and cultivating cohesion in the classroom and the HLC community. We are so thankful for the unique culture they foster at IA. We have lived many places and haven't found anything to match this program.

Exceptional school for whole child learning! The teacher to student ratio is great with TAs in each class, plus plenty of 1-on-1 aids, as needed. The front office is safe space for kiddos to decompress. All staff and teachers are compassionate and always have the childs best interest in mind. Weve been at IA for 5 years and my kids love it. They especially love Mary in Nature Studies and Sam in Ceramics. My son has Riley in 1st grade and adores her; shes a fantastic new addition to the IA team this year! My daughter is in 5th with Jill and looks forward to every day with her!

I love how this school is welcome to all people, takes a very non-biased stance as a whole (stays away from politics, race and gender agendas, etc), and encourages an atmosphere of sincere love and care for children (not just academics). The biggest thing that I love about the school is how all of these things are able to be stabilized and consistent efforts are implemented due to a strong staff and principal that lead well in practicing what is preached. Kristine (the principal), continually introduces beneficial concepts and consistently reminds the entire school of its vision, goals and overall effort to help steer the youth and families to do and be better people for the good of all (since this is what helps create leaders and ultimately better communities). While not perfect (no school is!), the always prevailing encouragement, grace and go-getter, keep trying atmosphere allows for growth and goodness that is present due to their standards and the foundations mentioned, and its so nice to feel and see the fruit of this everywhere within the school!

As a teacher at Innovations Academy, I can confidently say that this school is an amazing place for both students and staff. The project-based learning approach allows students to explore their creativity and grow academically in an engaging, hands-on environment. The school implements Positive Discipline and Responsive Classroom techniques, which foster a respectful, caring community and help build strong relationships.

The campus is beautiful, open, and dog-friendlycreating a welcoming, nurturing atmosphere for everyone. The staff here is truly exceptional, genuinely caring for and nurturing each student, helping them thrive not only academically but also socially and emotionally. Innovations Academy could potentially be a great school, but the current director is a significant issue. Unfortunately, her behavior is toxic and abusive. She physically restrained my special needs child, holding him down so tightly that he struggled to breathe. When I confronted her, she yelled at me and insisted that this school wasn't the right place for him. From the start, her presentation gave me an unsettling feelingshe came across as odd and overly controllingbut I never imagined how bad it would be. The high turnover rate among teachers is likely due to her erratic and harsh management style. I deeply regret not trusting my instincts before enrolling my children here. If you're considering this school, I strongly urge you to look elsewhere.

As a former community member, I am very apprehensive to post this review or any identifying information for fear of retaliation from administration. I've worked in schools for my entire career, and I can say with confidence that this is not a place I would ever send my child for a multitude of reasons. Whether you are a parent or a prospective staff member reading this, I would encourage you to be critical of the incredibly high staff turnover year over year along with the lack of real curriculum or pedagogy for students.

Innovations Academy is truly an innovative school! I have experience in public, private, and charter schools in and out of California; this school stands out from other schools, especially in San Diego. IA's diverse culture allows team members and families to bond and connect during and after school hours. Teachers have so much autonomy to think outside the box and teach in a memorable and meaningful way. As a project-based school, students can dive narrowly and deeply into many different topics, explore their soul qualities, and learn how to tap into those while having fun and learning.
I am so thankful IA has become a part of my life and my daughter's. She is happier than she has ever been at school. What child does not want to go on winter break because she will miss her teacher and classmates that much?! Thank you Sarah Beth for inspiring my little ones love and school.

My kids started at IA and all was well, I was a working parent and didn't get very involved with the teachers in the classroom except for chaperoning a field trip here or there. The first year my kids were there none of their teachers returned. This happened the second year as well, in 2022 and it started concerning me. I'd started a new role and had more time during the day so I started volunteering more and attending the board meetings. What I learned about what is happening behind the scenes at the school is appalling. The teachers flat out do not have the support they need, and are openly gaslit and berated when criticisms are discussed. I did some digging and learned that parents of children with documented disabilities were being treated as they weren't valued in the school - sending children to the office for minor classroom disruptions and telling them they need to "be positive or be silent" is not cohesive with any tenet of positive discipline. I witnessed and personally experienced discrimination as well. I was told on the second week of school if my five year old with diagnosed adhd continued to be disruptive during circle time, he would be sent to the office or I could come pick him up. The school was aware of the meetings I'd set up to get the ball rolling on an IEP and had his records from the SSI meetings I'd had at his previous school when he was in pre-k. This rhetoric was told to me and other parents my older children were in classes with as well. My breaking point was when I happened to stop into an open house event and heard the director speak of transgender children so flippantly about their identities. The school definitely has a problem and it starts at the top. Also, the communication with the parents that comes from the director are often long winded, condescending and recently have become much more politically biased. Until an outside agency comes in and helps the school and director make sweeping changes, I cannot recommend anyone send their child here.

I am writing this review in hopes of warning prospective teachers and parents about the toxic environment at Innovations Academy. I have been a parent there for 8 years and I taught for 6 weeks. I had known about the high teacher turnover and heard from past teachers about their heartbreaking experiences, but decided I wanted to see for myself. Unfortunately, the small amount of time I spent there, I was able to experience first hand what all the previous teachers and parents had been describing. I attempted to talk kindly and positively with the administration and was met with shame and denial.I have expressed all of my concerns to administration and board of directors to no avail. I am very sad to have had to give up my classroom and my community of parents. I hope and pray that there will be changes, but please, if you are thinking of working there, or sending your kids, I URGE you to investigate. Don't take my word, find out for yourself. There are TOO MANY stories from teachers and parents, about unprofessional and inappropriate ways of treating children, parents and faculty members. There is no respect or value given to teachers. This results in a hostile environment where positive discipline is not practiced and a healthy community is not nourished. Without discipline very little learning occurs. If you decide you want to see for yourself, reach out to the existing community and ask questions.

Several years ago I sent my child here for middle school years. At the time I was so happy with our choice. Thankfully my student had a good teacher and things went well for us then.

Four years later I was told there was a teacher shortage due to the pandemic. So I worked at the school to help- blinded by my childs experience. After a week on the job I was absolutely horrified once I saw the inner workings and the directors true personality. In the past few years 60% of teachers have walked off the job mid year or not returned for a second year. When I first heard this it was all blamed on the teachers not being able to handle the IA way. When asked what the IA way was, no one was able to answer. I began to observe Christine (the director) verbally abuse staff - later I was included as well. There was no targeted bullying of others, it happened to everyone and as a result teachers were continually on edge. Understandably, many could not handle to abuse and had to leave mid year (or return for a second year) for mental health reasons. These were likely very dedicated, loving and motivated professionals that were later blamed for abandoning students. I now know the heartbreak and anguish their decision to do so must have been. Only to be gaslighted at the end - true abuse.
Even though offered, there was never any true support or guidance provided. There is no true curriculum to follow- but this reasoning is said to be based on allowing freedom of choice to create engaging learning experiences for their class. Which is irresponsible and impossible if one is under the stress that they were.
Im now regretful that I not only sent my own child there, I also recommend the school to many others over the years.
Unless there is new leadership and restructuring- this is not the place to send your student! I am so sad to say this- but it is true.

My son has been at this school since they opened up at the location on Ruffin Rd. It's been a crazy ride with Teachers leaving and being dismissed mid -year. He's had 3 new teacher's this year alone. The current one is a TA assistant to the prior teacher that was let go for falling in class a week prior before being walked out and not allowed to even talk or say goodbye to the kids in her class. I also don't believe the current teacher has her credentials to even be a teacher. My sons also endured major harassment from the director Christine. She's called him multiple volatile names on the phone during parent student conversation. It's so shocking an adult in control of a school can act and conduct the way she has. I'm extremely worried about my son's education going forward. We plan on getting tutors for next year to catch him up so he can be somewhat ready for high school. I highly discouraged any parent letting your child to attend this school. Christine seems to think she needs spies to watch what all kids are doing on social media and will discipline and have them followed around school and punished. Beware... It's extremely troubling what power she has and how she uses it. I honestly can't believe nothing has been done about her.

I went on a tour of the school and while asking questions, I became concerned about the lack of a solid curriculum. I also asked Chistine how the PE teachers would handle a child who might request to take a rest break during extreme physical activity (the child has a documented heart condition) and her answer was quite alarming. It led me to believe that a child would not be taken seriously or listened to if there was any type of issue or problem. Children need to be protected and safe at school.

The school itself is very beautiful and the assistant who showed us around was very nice.

Too bad the person running the school is less than stellar.

I went here awhile ago around when I was in elementary. I did not have a good experience at this school, got bullied badly and the owner of the school was always picking sides I once got in trouble for a kid hitting me. She marked it as my fault with anything I did, it wasnt just the first time that happened. The bullying is very bad for at least. I remember the owner using therapy on me due to that. She told me how I would technically be in jail when I was older because of my actions which was clearly false. I remember my parents got on the phone with the owner, she was basically saying how everything I got bullied for was my doings she blamed on me. Every time time I got punched, harassed, bullied it was all on me which was unfortunate and I left the school due to that. And with the teaching, moving to my new school after going to innovations academy I was completely lost in what to do, the learning wasnt the best I felt I didnt get fully what I needed to learn going there they could of done better on that. I dont really like what the school stands for either it doesn't help you for future if you fail thats alright behavior type, your basically telling students that its alright to fail and that doesnt set you up for anything they could of used different wordings instead of telling students that failure is alright.

This review is painful to write because my child has made wonderful friends and the teachers have been exceptional.
The handling of COVId has been atrocious at this school and the director Christine Klugen has made it clear she believes in immunity over vaccines.
My child has only a few years left otherwise Id pull him out.
If I were you Id check out Hi-Tech if youre looking for a charter school that makes health decisions based on actual, and not, pseudo science.

I just joined IA this year for 7th grade. Ive made lots of friends and there nice but there are different boys that bully me about what I wear, how Im doing something but there literally doing the exact same thing for example I was wearing a crop top yesterday because IA doesnt have a dress and he said in Spanish I hate girls that wear those shirts and I was RIGHT next to him after that I was just joking around and I guess he got offended or something because he said at least I dont have a crusty bellybutton and he like was trying to make an impression of my outfit. But there are nice people just know there arent just one there are multiple. They also curse a lot even my teacher does!! The hole school makes your mama jokes and its really offensive but I know they do that in middle school just I want to let you know if you have a kid in elementary school. They also have to math class in 7th grade one is advanced and one isnt Im not in the advanced but the beginner is so easy we do 5-6th grade math what Im trying to say is that the other teacher should teach math and my teacher should teach writing and reading. Im thinking of switching schools

their 'no meaningless homework' policy is wonderful. My kids receive extra work or extra time to complete work when needed, but we are not spending our valuable family time nagging kids about completing regular homework. The kids are learning the skills of time management and independent study in the classroom and in other ways and not by wasting time with worksheets and logs.

The teachers we have been with are phenomenal. They are great at subject matter but really excel in making their classroom communities feel connected, engaged, and thrilled to learn. My kids' teachers have gone above and beyond in so many ways and because of this my kids are happy to go to school, feel supported and cared about, and are able to excel at academics.

Each of my kids has different learning needs. While we have not needed academic support outside of the classroom teachers and assistants, there is knowledge that support is readily available. The teachers want to understand and help each student learn and excel and are very open to communication with families on how to best serve each kid. There is still work to be done on personalizing the learning environment even more, but the dialog seems to be ongoing and open to all wishing to participate

I have not seen or hear of any instances of bullying. I have seen and heard about very effective problem solving strategies in other situations that involve the students in the discussion and solution building. This makes each student feel valuable to the community (so less likely to engage in negative behaviors) and brings the focus on solutions rather than just blame.

We love IA!!!! My kids are actually happy!!! Great friends, great parents, great teachers. We did PUSD first and ya our kids were smart but yikes they were miserable!!! Focus at IA is on emotional intelligence so kids are incredible!!! BUT the problem is that academically it is allllll teacher dependent. As a parent you really need to pay attention and make sure your child isnt behind. We do workbooks after school so I can make sure my children are keeping up. Weve been here 4 years. Two of those academically were disappointing (but those teachers are gone now- maybe they got too many complaints). Keely (3rd grade) is the BEST teacher ever emotionally and academically for the kids. She is a true gift.

For my family this is a 10/10 school with 10/10 staff and a great student community. This may not be for everyone, especially those who adhere to the traditional classroom model and think homework volume is a measure of educational efficacy. Tiger Mom's, Innovations is not for you. The antiquated meat grinder that is traditional 'high performing schools' is churning out the next generation of Tyler Durdens. Kids have the rest of their lives to learn about the zero sum game. At Innovations they learn about collaboration, constructive conflict resolution, community, kindness, world culture and learning by experience. It is also a place these kids are eager to attend, not, to quote the Simpsons, 'kid prison'.

There are so many reasons to love IA, below is just a short list of some of the important ones:

1- The school's director, Christine Kuglen, is a true gem, her desire to do the best for the students is in the center of her vision and it can be seen and felt everyday throughout the school.
2- The whole IA staff are in line with the main goal: provide a healthy and happy environment for the kids to grow both in academic as well as social-emotional fields.
3- Most IA parents are seriously involved with the school because they feel like the school is part of their family.
4- Kids are respected and are given wings to fly.
5- Kids are encouraged to speak up and express themselves.
5- Kids learn to work as teams and they learn the art of conflict resolution and problem solving by doing.
6- Kids are not expected to act like adults, because they are accepted and respected for who they really are: kids!
7- While the students are advancing academically, they are not required to spend endless hours doing meaningless homework at home.
8- The enrichment programs such as robotics, chess, drama, art, clay, nature study,... are invaluable!
9- Every day I send my son to school, I have the feeling that he is staying with our loving extended family.
10 - I have not even one single reason why I shouldn't love IA!

All of the kids love the no meaningless homework policy at IA (meaning no homework as long as you are completing your work in class), but it's great for parents as well. Our daughter excels at fact memorization, so homework that was sent home from her old private school was never a challenge to anything other than how much she was paying attention at any given moment. Since our child tests above grade level in reading and math, we often times have fun giving her more advanced "homework" that challenges her beyond repetition of the work that was already completed in class. She's excited to do this extra homework since it's not a daily boredom routine.

The staff and faculty at IA are fantastic. Every staff member from the director of the school to the P.E. coach are approachable and open to having a conversation. IA isn't a top down entity (although it has a strong leadership staff), so when people say that "IA is getting better each year," it really is. That's not because it was subpar and needed improvement; that's because it is seeking to improving each year and will continue to get better and better thanks to that goal. The school feels like a true community where parents are encouraged to be involved and help with that improvement wherever they can.

This is our first year at IA, and we absolutely love it! Even better, our child loves it! She's learning how to conduct research in the classroom and getting to experience advanced electives like pottery while still in grade school (rather than having to wait until high school). She's excited to go to school each day, and we're very happy that we made the switch out of private school and into this charter. Since she has always excelled in school and tests above grade level in all subjects, we're happy that our daughter is in a school that feels like a full time G.A.T.E. program. Her love of learning is fostered and encouraged at IA where she's being taught that she really can achieve anything she sets her mind to do.

At most schools, when two kids fight they get sent to the principals office. Here, they go to mediation. The kids talk out what is going on and why. Any problems between the kids are addressed and the students are encouraged to not only talk through the problem but find a way to get along. Our family, and especially our kids, love Innovations Academy! Our oldest is 15, and recently graduated 8th grade with IA. Since moving on to Scripps Ranch High he's getting straight A's so far and adjusting well. Sadly, this was not the case in elementary and middle school before IA. He was losing motivation and felt swept along and forgotten in public school. In 5th grade we knew something was wrong. We tried tutors, teacher interventions, and just spending more time with him. He was just not enjoying school. In the middle of 7th grade we knew we had to make a change. He was making all D's and not keeping up. We looked around at private schools. We didn't have the money and considered selling our house to make up the needed funds. Thankfully we found Innovation Academy. We were hoping for positive change, but we didn't expect such an incredible, welcoming, and uplifting experience. He started loving school and for the first time ever was sad when going on summer break! The wonderful teachers and kid-first curriculum kept him engaged and loving school.

This is not our only IA story! We have twins 10 years younger that are starting in Kindergarten this year. They are absolutely loving IA too. They love their teachers and excitedly telling us what they did that day ( never heard this from our oldest in public school ). My son told me that he saw the muscles in the face and they go in rings. My daughter loves the nature walks and learning about bugs and animals. My wife and I are daily thankful to have IA in our lives.

We hope this makes some small addition to the picture of how IA has touched lives for the better.

My son suffers from Bipolar Disorder. We had chosen this school believing their approach and compassion would help him learn and grow with a least restrictive environment.

Unfortunately their answer to issues arising from issues relating to bipolar disorder are removing the kid from school completely. Unless you conform to their image, you are outcast.

Negative! Their lack of a discipline policy and use of Positive Discipline is an absolute failure and assisted in my child's worsening behavior problems. Instead of using programs like In School Suspension or other methods to control student behavior, they cave in on what the child is attempting to do and sends them home.

If your child has any psychological issues, stay far away from this place.
If you aren't the normal soccer mom/pop, stay far away from this place.
If your child is perfect and never steps out of line, this might be the place for you.

This is an amazing school and environment. This is our 4th year here. My son went from disliking school, to LOVING learning, school & not wanting to miss an hour, let alone a day! The social emotional program helps kids navigate their emotions and relationships in a healthy way. The teachers and staff are top notch. Other reviewers mentioned turnover, I can tell you that that many of the staff are "world travelers" so they often do leave, to start a new chapter, after their time at IA. The school has also expanded classrooms (from 1 per grade, to 2 classes per grade) in most classes, so the teachers who left, were not a good fit for the positive discipline approach. The teachers encourage our children to think and create on their own, they are not given facts and figures to memorize. They learn concepts in experiential ways (reading, research, field study, creation, collaboration, presentation of learning). It's AWESOME! The teacher/ratio numbers are not correct either. Each teacher has a F/T assistant - you just don't see that in many schools anymore, let alone public charters. Exposure is key here, many specials are: clay, nature studies, robotics, performing arts, zumba, PE, Spanish, Keyboarding, ASL, always something new and exciting for my kids. Amazing things are happening here!

I would not recommend this school unless you have a very quiet daughter. Boys are not encouraged to act like boys and the focus is more on becoming a good citizen, learning how to make at with garbage and less on reading, writing and arithmetic.

Great teachers were holding this school together but there has been a mass exodus, exposing the fault in philosophy and implementation. This is our first year at IA and it has been a great experience. The director is the real deal and she has created something very special here. We came here after our oldest son skipped 5th grade after the intensive "acceleration" process at Poway Unified and so he clearly needs to be challenged. He is thriving in his 6th grade class, especially with all of the amazing field trips. We researched project-based learning and the reputation of this school specifically from local educators and personal recommendations from parents that have moved their kids to this charter school. Some of the approaches will surely be different for new families (dogs allowed on campus - we love this), the kids have so much freedom to help establish rules and play as they learn, a teacher or student might be barefoot in art class, etc. Our 4th grader is also thriving at Innovations, he just adores his teacher, has made so many friends and is also challenged and engaged in the classroom. My work with the tech startup world has helped to instill confidence that this type of academic setting better prepares students for the new innovation economy than the rigid focus on standardized tests and out of control dress codes, bureaucracy and outdated text books. The teachers here are genuine-- they are all there because they want to be at this specific school, and their care for the students is evident in each interaction. Coming from PUSD, I could not believe how small the class sizes are and that on top of that there is a teacher's aide for each classroom. Not to mention an actual arts/pottery studio, PE, Spanish teacher, music, theater program, etc.

We just love this school and wish we had found it sooner! My son with ADHD and sensory processing disorder,struggled with social emotional, which effected his academics and confidence in his traditional school. The social emotional curriculum, hands-on project work and minimal homework have helped him love school and excel at math, writing and speaking. He now wants to do some math and journal writing over the summer without being asked!!!! They do not prepare your child for anything, children are unsupervised, then when things get out of hand they blame the kids... The Director is very hard to deal with, she will always side with the teachers..after a few weeks there, parents will figure out what really happens there...it's disturbing.. Trust me!

We are completing our first year at Innovations Academy, and we LOVE it!! Our bias is former teacher in Poway District, and member of a small specialty Command in the US Navy. My reservations in the beginning were if my son, who hated school, would thrive in such and independant, structure. He develoed an amazing unique personality, and confidence soared. Our daughter succeeds in any environment, so naturally she thrived as well. Parent involvement is surprisingly low, especially in financial donations, however, it could contribute to the happiness of the IA Families b/c the school does not pressure anyone about donations. Finally, use discernment in reading negative reviews, you may pick up on lack of communication with the school and their children. The school, and their staff, will accommodate a private meeting to address your concerns with little Johnny or Sally.

We are so happy with Innovations Academy! This will be our third year with the school...our children will be going into 4th and 2nd. The school seems to improve more and more each year! My children are being challenged academically while developing wonderful social skills and growing emotionally. The fabulous part is they enjoy school...they are developing a love of learning which will carry them through life. They do not have a no homework policy (as some have previously stated), it is a no "meaningless" homework policy. My children have come home with work from time if something wasn't completed for the week, a project needed additional work or home preparation or if a subject needed reinforcement. The difference is there are no daily worksheets that used to cause countless tears and struggle. One of the things I love the most about the school are the enrichment opportunities...art, media arts, gardening, music, PE... Yes, schools have them, but not to the level we are experiencing at IA. Those things are so valuable and important and they are disappearing from our public schools. This amazing school is something you have to witness first hand to fully appreciate.

I am so glad that we discovered IA. We had a very disappointing experience at the neighborhood public school where my son was stressed out beyond belief trying to keep up with the academic pressure placed on him there. It really affected his self confidence. We have been at IA for two years now and my son has blossomed both socially and academically. The teachers and staff here really seem to care about the students and I appreciate that they are tolerant and respectful that kids learn in different ways and at different levels. My son has since been found to have a learning disability, and the staff at IA have been very helpful in accommodating him in the classroom and recommending resources to help him learn. In addition, I appreciate that the students at IA are encouraged to express themselves creatively and also to think critically. I feel that in addition to learning the core academic subjects, they also learn important life skills, like how to work effectively in peer groups, how to give and receive feedback, and how to speak publicly. These are gifts we can give our children at a young age that will help them succeed in the future. Overall, a great school!

Honestly, half the staff here is incompetent (Just entered high school) and it was honestly was not what i needed. The children are always alone in the class rooms while the teachers wander off (whether they say so or not). The no homework thing sounds well enough at first, but later on your children will come to expect that, what happens in high school? In college when their cramming for an exam all night? The fact is if i could take back from going there i would, I would have a much better time here in the real world if so....

My daughter will be attending Kinder this fall and has not yet (and I haven't decided) attended Innovation Academy, my only experience w/ the school is the Info Meeting parents are required to attend in order to submit an application. I live in the Poway school district however was looking for a school that was 'Project Based/Inquiry Based" learning, unfortunately the Poway district does not have. I was excited there was a Charter school nearby that employs this teaching method. I attended the info meeting and left not knowing whether or not it was the right environment for my child. The school director/founder facilitates the meeting and she was very off-putting. The impression I walked away with, and what the director actually said, was that if your teaching philosophy does not align with hers, than this is not the school for you. Keep in mind that the director was a stay a home mom who decided to open her own school. Trying not to judge her, but did not see any sort of real education or child development background that she mentioned about herself. The teachers at the meeting did not impress me when answering questions from parents.

I know that other parents (including some friends of mine) have had problems with the staff at Innovations Academy, but I never have, and my children are flourishing there. If you are thinking about your children attending this school, you should go there and check it out for yourself. Have your children shadow for a day, talk to the teachers and other staff members. As with all schools, communication is key! I have found that by talking to the teachers directly about my goals and expectations for my children's education, and being open to receiving their help, I have seen huge positive results over the course of the school year. This type of school is not a good fit for many families, but if you are looking for some alternative to conventional classroom education, this school is worth checking out.

Not what I would consider a good experience. The teacher our child had was very new age, was passive aggressive, and there was a general lack of respect and maturity. Also a lack of structure, discipline, and quality. Teachers seem to have a free reign without boundaries. We discovered this after the teacher called a student a very inappropriate name, slanted his teaching toward his own beliefs, and shared private information from parent administrator meetings with the class on multiple occasions. Administrator will eventually back the teachers, even when serious issues are backed by multiple parents. I do not recommend sending your child to this school.

I have been to this school since I was in 3rd grade it is so amazing there's no homework and you get to learn about the future and math and all that without homework and all that stress dont listen to all thoses silly reviews about not going to this school because you improve ever single day

This is our first year at IA. The reason our son is going to this school is because we we didnt feel that our public middle school was right for him so we heard about this school and decided to check it out. So far my son and us love the school. Its great for him since he is more of a hands on learner and they have a no homework policy which we all love since we can spend that after school time together as a family without the stress of homework. So far so good.

If the school year ended today it would be considered a great year for my two children. We needed an alternative way of teaching and they are enjoying school for the first time. Getting up for school and telling me to hurry up. I love the attitude change. They have other needs that are being addressed as well. So far I am pleased with this school. Also, they have let me be involved as a parent. I really like that they are addressing the children's problem solving skills, thinking for themselves, how to speak up in there education-social and personal needs. So many parents are so controlling there kids are suffering. There is self growth and leadership qualities encouraged daily. I'm excited for this year.

My daughter goes to Innovations and she and we love it!!!! She was at Marshall Middle which is an excellent school, but with the budget cuts has gone downhill tremendously. For example, last year her math teacher was literally incompetent. We begged to have her moved out of the class, as did many other parents. The administration knew of this teacher but since he had seniority, he stayed and the new good teachers received pink slips...Way to go teacher's union, you could care less about educating our kids it seems. We spent a fortune on math tutoring and her brother who is a math major at a UC school had to help as did we.... ultimately in spite of the school she did ok in that class. But at IA so far all is going great and the one on one teaching seems to fit our daughter much much better.. They are dedicated to educating your children.

My 2 sons go to Innovations Academy Charter School in San Diego, CA. I can't begin to tell you how positively affected they have been by their experience at this charter school. The whole philosophy of the school is just what they need to realize their full potential as learners. My younger son tested 99% on the GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) test but never got more than B's and C's in his school work. He always just skated through under the radar of his teachers and did just what was necessary. At Innovations Academy the teachers take the time to focus on how every student learns. We took our boys out of public school and moved them to a private school with a traditional approach to learning. They did 3-4 hours of homework nightly, took tests, learned how to take notes in class. They were both very stressed out and anxious during that year. When Innovations Academy opened in our neighborhood my husband and I decided to try it out. Now both of my sons are excited about what they are learning in school,can't wait to go to school every day, and definitely less stressed about "grades".

This is a review for the Home Learning Community at the school. Up until this last academic year, my daughter was going to a highly-rated public school where she was miserable. Now that she goes to IA, she is so much more happier. It is a lot more balanced, and the school cares more about the kids than how they perform on the STAR tests (to tell the truth, they don't care at all how they perform on this test). It is so refreshing from the push, push, push of the academically-minded public schools.

I have a late birthday kindergarten student at Innovations. I am thrilled with the mass opportunities the school is offering my child. I am credentialed and know the standards well. My child is exceeding all of them and comes home creating her own homework. My child loves to graph words (by number of letters), show off reading and writing skills learned in class. Comes home telling me all kinds of interesting facts and interests developed through her project based learning days. I can't praise the program enough for offering such a broad based learning forum. As an educator and parent, it pains me to see all the cuts to excellent arts, science, and multicultural education. I.A. delivers these critical programs and intertwines them into core curriculum. 5 Stars from me!

I know how wonderful IA seems at first. If your child has special needs, please beware. There is initial elation when you experience the no-homework policy. You will feel that your child and his/her gifts are finally being recognized. As a parent whose child's needs were egregiously ignored by IA staff, I urge you to pay close attention to the work your child is (or is not) doing, and to what is actually occurring in the classroom. Though we didn't move to the new site, my view is not sour grapes. The move upset me because I feared -- 100% inaccurately -- that my child could not perform elsewhere. I'd already begun to realize that IA's freeform non-curricula and classroom chaos were not serving my child. We are now at a rigorous small charter. Unlike at IA, my child has close attention, daily assessments (as do all students), and the nurturing and expert help of an experienced Resource Specialist. She is not slipping between the cracks. Unlike at IA, staff is accountable, her goals are being monitored, she feels confident and challenged. Her first report card's GPA was a 3.2. This, after being told publicly at IA that she was "not the smartest girl in the class."

We are so happy that Innovations Academy has come into the community of Scripps Ranch. This has this given us an excellent alternative to the schools within our own neighborhood and allowed us to give our children a quality education without moving them to the private sector in other areas of San Diego. Our 6th grade son actually said to us last Sunday that he didn t want a weekend break from school as he was having such a good time working on the projects in his classroom. Our 5th grade son, who has an IEP, has become more confident and outgoing as a result of the nurturing, small classroom environment that embraces differences and finds ways of teaching to each child. As a mom, I couldn t be more pleased. That each child is a partner in the IA educational community and accountable for his and her actions to their peers is just icing on the cake. IA's approach is so refreshing! They are the first school my son has been to that teaches Critical Thinking and has him apply his knowledge. This is very important to me. So many schools are based on memorizing! Not Innovations! His teachers can even make vocabulary more applicable to his everyday life than his prior schools. Teachers can really do students a disservice when it comes to vocabulary, but not at IA! Their system works! My son has had vocabulary tests for 7 years, but never had it the IA way! He now uses his new words in his everyday language, and finds them in novels and understands them - no more insignificant words. Sometimes memorizing something for a test is actually easier for some students than being on the spot and having to perform with their new knowledge, but Innovations doesn't take the easy way. They take the right way! The students will know more because they live it and don't just memorize something! This Chinese Proverb says it best: Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand.

I just want to thank you for the opportunity you have provided for my daughter who is attending your school. We weren t sure what the expectations were but the limited homework was a real selling point, as you might imagine to a student with ADHD and learning disabilities !!! I wanted to share with you the comments my daughters tutor, a retired elementary teacher in the San Diego Unified School District for over 30 years, had to say about our daughter: I think the new school is wonderful for her. I have never seen her so enthusiastic about learning. They obviously are using strategies that help her and don't keep her confined to a desk for long periods of time. As you are well aware, kids with ADD and ADHD don't do well in that kind of a structure. She is very focused and eager to do what I ask of her. I really think the change to a new school has been a positive one for her and I am excited to see how she progresses this year! To reiterate the words of her tutor, We are excited to see how she progresses this year !!!
