SET is a small school, ~200 students total, therefore all students and teachers know everyone in the school.
My kid struggled in public school, both academically and socially. He is doing much better in SET, he feels valued by peers, he has friends, likes his teachers, and doing very well academically.
The teachers are very good - both in teaching their topics and in making students (at least my kid) welcome and appreciated.

My daughter doesn't have a lot of homework this year because she gets her work done in class. Last year she had quite a bit for certain subjects but not others.

Like at any school, homework depends on the class and the teacher.

The teachers exceed my expectations. They know each student by name, have great relationships with them, and treat them like family. My son's former teachers are always happy to see him when he goes to visit, which is often. He gave graduation presents TO some of his teachers before he left.

I know my son was and daughter will be prepared for the “real world” at an early age because they have the skills to deal with the fast-paced, ever changing technology-driven world thanks to the teachers at SET.

9th graders have to take a leadership class where they learn about respect, individuality, compassion, and accepting others for who they are.

10th graders have to take a marketing class where they learn about how to brand themselves. How cool would it have been to know myself so well at an early age!

The foundation of their education is to have the entrepreneurial mindset. Our kids graduate into the real world confidently knowing themselves and have the tools to create their own future.

Dr. McCurdy, the principal, said in the commencement speech of 2017, "If you aren't failing, you aren't learning." What a great place to make mistakes, learn from them, and make improvements. I'm so excited for the students attending SET High because they are learning real-world skills at such an early age in a supportive, caring, and fun environment.

Dr. McCurdy and vice principal, Darrell McClendon, have their fingers on the pulse of SET high. They know all of the students - their strengths, weaknesses, quirks, problems - and they have a unique relationship with them that I have never seen in a public school. They genuinely CARE about the success of each student. To them, our kids are special individuals, full of potential.

If there are any issues that Dr. McCurdy thinks we parents need to know immediately, he notifies us, unlike what I have experienced at the public schools my kids have gone to before SET.

There is no tolerance for bullying at SET. If there was an issue, Dr. McCurdy and Mr. McClendon would take care of it right away.

The students are very accepting and supportive of each other, the likes of which I have not seen since my daughter was in Catholic grade school.

There is no hierarchy of grades amongst the student body because they interact well with each other no matter what grade they are in.

SET High is an amazing one-of-a-kind school. It is a WASC accredited college prep charter high school that focuses on science, entrepreneurship, and technology. The curriculum and electives are outstanding, taught in a supportive environment by phenomenal teachers. They are committed, passionate, and motivated to help the students succeed. They know and interact with students, treating them like family.

There are bonds that are made that won’t be broken. My son graduated from there in 2017 and goes back to see his teachers several times a month, sometimes helping out when needed. My daughter is in 10th grade and is already known for her leadership skills, creative writing, and analytical thinking. She didn't want to go to any other school because she is with "her people."


SET High is needed for those kids who don’t learn in the “cookie cutter” system, who have different ways of learning, who are quirky, brilliant, different, or who needs the compassion of others who accept them for who they are. The students who WANT to go to SET come from different backgrounds and belief systems and go there for various reasons.

The school has been a great experience for our son and we as parents are very happy with it. Our son is smart but did not do a great job of applying himself academically. The school has motivated him with its style of teaching and by offering classes he really enjoys and is excited by (leadership class, computer focused classes and core classes where they obtain a good understand of its application in the real world). We are very happy with the school and others should definitely give it consideration.

This school is excellent. My son is a freshman and he is thriving here. The teachers and staff truly care about the students and support each student to become their best self. I have never been at a school like this where the staff and teachers are so invested in helping every one of their students to succeed. We are so glad that we made the choice to send our son here.

The staff made an attempt, but only ended in forcing the student body (mostly seniors)to attend lectures, that not only did it have no real credits towards their academic grade, but it wasted their time, where they could be doing something more productive.

This school needs to improve many things about themselves. They do indeed they some good qualities. However there are far too few of them too balance out their bad ones. Hopefully one day they will have better improve themselves, but until that day it's just a poorly planned daycare.

S.E.T. High has been such a huge blessing for my family and especially for my son. We're a military family so we move quite a lot. For the past 2 years, my son has flourished from the individual attention, care and education he's received from the teachers/staff/students at S.E.T. High. He's advanced so I have to be picky with the schools I allow him to attend. This school was the perfect fit for him. The friendships he's developed are such a gift. All the kids are super smart, well mannered, nerdy and I love that since that's how my son is. I love that they focus on learning and wanting to contribute to society in a positive way vs the hottest trends. I appreciate the extra time and care the teachers/staff put into knowing our family and of course my child. I'd highly recommend it.

Get in while you still can. Our son is a senior, and the school has had significant change since the first year- our only regret is that change had not happened sooner. I've volunteered in class there and have met many teachers and staff- all VERY student-centered and motivated to help students excel. This school is an excellent choice if your student thrives in a small-scale environment. If we had another child, this would be our choice again.

Our son graduated from SET High last year and now our daughter is attending and we couldn't be happier. She is only in 9th grade and already taking on leadership roles.

Our son is a sophomore here and loves this school. The administration truly cares about these kids, all you have to do to see that is sit in the lobby at watch them greet the students or watch them say goodbye at the end of the day. The students have chances to thrive here in a way they wouldn't in a regular public school. The classes are small and the teachers work at the perfect pace to keep kids interested. There is a huge variety of classes to choose from. The block scheduling is perfect for my child and has allowed him to take more classes than peers in traditional schools, which he likes. I've watched him grow into a young man who knows what his education goals are and he is reaching high for them. This school has given him the power to do that. They care so much about the kids and teach in a way that gets the kids excited to learn.

Unfortunately this will be his last year with SET because we are a military family, but I'm confident that what he's learned these 2 years here will help him easily transition into a new high school. I'll be honest, this school isn't for everyone, but for kids like mine, it's the perfect high school. We are so lucky to have had the chance to be at this school while living in San Diego.

My son is a freshman this year and really likes the school. He loves the small class sizes and is making friends. The teachers seem to really care about the kids and have answered my emails in 24 hours or less. The principle stays in good communication with the students and parents via weekly emails and is easy to approach. As a working parent I really like the schools You Tube channel so you can see special events and assemblies. They have no tolerance for bullying and the kids individuality is respected. My son also likes the variety of classes like 3D Graphics, Robotics and Cyber Security. I'm glad I found this school for my son who would have fallen through the cracks at a large high school.

This is our first year at SET High. While it is not a "traditional" high school experience, it is a great place for our teen. The leadership is strong and genuinely cares about the students. The staff/teachers are equally caring and supportive. There's always innovative things to keep the students engaged and I love that they encourage students to be themselves which creates an environment where everyone celebrates & respects individuality. This will be my son's third year at Coleman (SET High School). Each year has been better than the last. There is so much innovation happening at this school that I feel so lucky to have found it for my son. He is VERY into computers, technology and gaming and not so much into sports or social media. He did not want to go to a large school and our options were limited. Coleman was a godsend. He loves the smaller classes, the close relationships with the teachers and administrators. The staff truly knows each kid by name and there is a very accepting and safe environment that lets kids express themselves without fears of being singled out or bullied. He even convinced 2 of his friends from a large high school to enroll this year.
The other nice thing about the school is the relationships they have built with local tech companies. This year they spent an entire day at Northrup Gruman and this year will be competing in a "cyber patriot" program sponsored by NG to learn about cyber security. Dr. McCurdy, the new principal, is implementing, many new and exciting programs to rebrand the school as the first Entrepreneurial high school for Technology. He is truly dedicated to these kids and the school. He has been great at informing and including the parents on all of these exciting changes. There are regular meetings with the parents (meetings with McCurdy) where parents are encouraged to share ideas and concerns. He is very accessible to the kids and the parents.
I am so excited for the coming year and all of the great opportunities that await for my son!!!

This was our son's first year as a freshman. After looking at many HS options we chose Coleman based on the orientation we attended and the fact that it is a smaller school and class size. Initially we were neutral on how the experience was going. Our child seemed to like it and the teachers and staff were very approachable. Early in the school year we were informed Dr. Wahab the principal was leaving and Dr. Curdy was her replacement. This action left us greatly concerned about "what is going on"? We were concerned that we had made a mistake in our choice for HS. We decided to ride it out after Dr. McCurdy called a parent meeting to explain their plan moving forward. Based on previous reviews it appeared the school was a little dysfunctional under Dr. Wahab. We are glad we stuck it out because there seems to be a much more positive direction and guidance under Dr. McCurdy and adding Mr. McClendon to the staff a sense of security. Our son is doing well and really likes the school. We gave him the option to move to another HS but elected to stay at Coleman. He has plenty of homework and projects so it is not a cake walk, but he is showing greater interest in academics than his prior school.
Moving forward we think that Coleman was and is the right choice for us. Our son is very bright, smart, and very opinionated(not bragging) and would get lost in a larger school system. This is just right for him.

I went to this school freshmen to senior year, the only good teachers that I had were Ms. Lowenstein and Ms. Bautista. Ms. Bautista left the school. After leaving Coleman Tech I found that I was completely unprepared for university. When I was going there I fraught tooth and nail against anyone who insulted the school or it's staff. Now, after graduating and reviewing how my high school experience was, I found that even though it was fun to go there, I was woefully unprepared for university. My time there in review was that, this place was fun when it should have been college prepping, it was easy when it should have been rigorous. I was so unprepared for college that I had a professor tell me that I must have lied and cheated to get excepted into their college. In conclusion, I found that grades are relative, your grades may look good here, but in reality you are failing in every regard. Go here if you want to build false sense of confidence in your abilities, abilities that if you got at CTCHS are surely lacking.

I chose to attend Coleman Tech Charter HIgh School because I wanted to stay in the charter school system having previously attended a charter middle school. CTCHS was a perfect fit for me. I love how it is a smaller school, which made it easier for me to transition into high school. I also like how the classes are set up. The teachers are amazing and strive to make classes fun, yet educational. The way they teach, through different and innovative instruction, makes it so much easier to learn, retain information, and orient ourselves around current events leading to community engagement and civic mindedness. I like CTCHS, and am glad that I chose to attend this school.

I felt the school did a good job of reaching out to all students and creating a learning environment where they could work in classrooms with teachers who took a personal interest in them as students and as human beings. The class size was small so students could receive individual help while also working in groups to learn collaboration. The English 12 teacher was especially innovative in her teaching methods reaching students who may have originally not had a good experience in English. She reached out to the community to provide real world learning and an opportunity for her students to hear from people that may very well employ them in the future. The school provided great information about college going and all the teachers were willing to meet and discuss each students progress anytime. They all communicated well and made sure everyone was well informed about their students work, strengths and needs. I would recommend this school to students and families interested in a school community where the focus is the students, helping them meet their greatest potential.

As a former student of CTCHS, I was appalled by some of the things that went on there. The administration handles some issues terribly, and the academics are nothing to brag about.

Teachers are quite lenient about many things, and some of them are deeply unprofessional. The principal, Dr. Wahab, is also extremely unprofessional. There is a very loose curriculum and some of the teachers do not uphold any piece of it. Despite that, these teachers are never held accountable for failing students because they are the friends of Dr. Wahab. Classes are far too simple and, therefore, the students do not learn to their potential. I found myself unsatisfied with coursework very often. THERE IS NO BOOK READING IN ENGLISH 12. Seniors in English 12 are NOT required to read or report on any books. How is that college prep?

There were once very good teachers there, when I started during my sophomore year, but their positions were terminated at the end of that year. Those were arguably the best teachers on campus. Unsurprisingly, all of Dr. Wahab's friends still hold their teaching position. Dr. Wahab's close friend is the English 12 teacher that has NO CURRICULUM. The administration is skewed quite badly.

I would NOT recommend this school to potential high school students. It is unorganized and the learning structure is poor. There are some very great and honest teachers there, but they are not the majority anymore. The growing school has good intentions, but the execution of said intentions are poor, and all and all do not benefit the students in the long run.

CTCHS states that they are a "college going and beyond" school, Well my son just got a 4 year scholarship to San Diego State University because of the wonderful education he received to CTCHS. Do not let the word Charter fool you, THIS IS A FREE SCHOOL.
Like you, we looked long and hard for the right high school to send our son too. We have raised 3 kids and have 20 years of high school experiences here in San Diego because of our kids age differences, We have even done home school because the normal district schools could not provide a safe, proactive learning environment. So we knew what we wanted in a high school. I was really impressed by the fact that the teachers all had college degrees in the subjects they were teaching. Most had two degrees!!.
But after meeting with Dr Wahab MD and Dr McCurdy PH.D we knew that we had found the right school. Over the last 4 years he has had full support from the teachers and staff. The small class sizes are a huge advantage for personalized input from the teachers. As a parent the staff is easy to talk to and have a lot of caring when it comes to your child. It is a good fit for any type of student.

Dr Wahab's has built a wonderful school, and her free "FOCUS" nights where she teaches you about the various college systems, costs, financing, prepping your student and gives you the inside track from the admission people themselves, was indispensable in planning our sons path to college.
I highly recommend this school and its wonderful staff.

After joining the Coleman Tech community, my self esteem and confidence has incredibly boosted. Coleman Tech paves a bright path that many teenagers need to be led to begin walking on, builds the sense of community the psyche craves, and provides a safe place for those who are commonly known as outcasts.

My daughter started Coleman Tech for her 10th grade year. She is an above average student who enjoys learning. Unfortunately, the large public school she attended for her 9th grade did not have the resources/opportunities to help students who were above "state avg"...because she was not in fear of failing, she was unable to get the help she needed in order to continue to excel. At Coleman Tech, this is not an issue at all. There are options for help everyday!!! With the school being smaller, she has also got to enjoy playing all the sports offered. This helped her gain friends and confidence while still exceeding in her classes. The staff are all helpful and prompt to answer any questions I have.

My boys just started the 9th grade this year and they are actually excited about get up and out the door for school in the morning. As a parent this is HUGE. My boys have never been interested in sports and have had a hard time fitting in at other schools because of it. They feel very comfortable at Coleman Tech and I love that the kids are encouraged to be themselves and pursue what interests them not what others think they should be doing. I also like that the smaller school atmosphere where teachers and students can really get to know each other. I would highly recommend parents to check out Coleman Tech!!

Coleman Tech is...a great school, you have the opportunity to make new friends and have AMAZING teachers. I love it there, sometimes i wished it was like a regular high school, like football, cheer, stuff like that. But at the end of the day i know i made the right decision to go to Coleman Tech Charter High School. :)

Wow my child has an IEP and I feel that teachers and Resource don't even get together and talk about a plan for my child. It seems that the teachers feel like they don't even have to address the IEP and just go on as business as usual. Maybe one good Federal lawsuit will do the job.

Has such potential and could be such a great school. I bought my kids to this school with high hopes and have been let down is some pretty significant ways. For one, I worry about my kids and how there days is going every day due to the fact that they have both been threatened by other students and the school did nothing to help me. I had to get the school police involved after so many times of not getting the help I need and the officer actually had to instruct Dr. Wahab (sp) to do something about it. I'm not really sure who is in charge over there because it's not the principal who actually gave on of my kids to leave campus one day without my knowledge or convent. I've left notes for teachers to call me back to discuss grades, only to hear nothing back from them. I'm scrolling through all these great reviews for this school and wondering, why is our experience so different? We're just normal people who wart our kids to get a good education and high school experience like they deserve. It's been challenging to say the least :(

Great teacher and program-- my son is thriving at this school and actually likes going to school. He went from struggling to get C and D's to A's B's. Teachers are very responsive to parnet concerns and are willing to work with kids that do not fit into the education learning norm. I would recommend this High school !

CTCHS is a great school! I am very happy we found this school for my son, he is in his second year at Coleman Tech and he has excelled since attending this school. The staff are caring and devoted to each and every student. They are geared toward motivating each student to realize their full potential and to be college bound! I've never encountered such dedicated administration!

Coleman Tech Charter High School is a small school where students get lots of individual attention. It's a "techy's" dream school, but there are lots of cool electives here, not just technology & robotics. The staff and administration are excellent. The school works more like a family unit and is totally focused on preparing students (and parents) for college. Plus, it's air conditioned folks! I was so excited to find this school for my child.

This school has helped my son to like going to school again. He has achieved goals that were impossible at Patrick Henry because CTCHS is open to communication & excellent scholarship & leadership. They help the students to become more aware of their individual talents & academic gifts. They are welcoming & loving in the way they teach all students. No one is left behind & the social atmosphere is that of a team/family. Love this school.

My daughter will soon begin her second year here and we are very pleased with the school so far. The teachers know the students and are able to keep them challenged or be available for helping them through difficult subjects (there are tutoring sessions available every morning before school). The school offers honors and AP courses, ASB and other clubs and sports, but is small enough that no one falls through the cracks. Yes, the test scores are low, but they were more reflective of prior years' learning at other schools since the school is new (I spoke with the principal before enrolling because the scores seemed so low). Look for the 2013 scores to shoot way up. Don't let the scores scare you away from checking out this great school - they are not reflective of the great learning that is taking place there!

I am very pleased with Coleman tech Charter high School. My grandson has gone there for 2 yrs now and the change in his attitude is amazing. He is not a number here, he is a person with a name and ideas. He has learned that Coleman teachers care! Teachers call if there is a problem, and together, parent, student, & teacher work it out. Students learn that school can be fun and educational at the same time. I have told everyone I know about Coleman Tech Charter High School. In my opinion this is it! A safe environment, hi tech environment (way of the future), College or Trade school bound environment, and teachers & staff that care. The new building if great, it gives a sense of pride in were they attend. For the first time in 11 years he likes school.

We are very happy with Coleman Tech High School. Our daughter gets a lot of individual attention, because class sizes are small, ranging from 7 (in Physics!) to 22. The teachers care about the students and the projects are great learning experiences. They vary the methods of learning that are used which gives the students lots of practice for college. The admin knows all students by name and they are all treated well.

This school has given my student excellent opportunities. He is constantly challenged academically. This school has given him the tools and support to meet and exceed each challenge. The teachers and staff go above and beyond for these students. I can already see the growth of my student, not just mentally but also in character as a result of their influence. Coleman received WASC accreditation in January 2012 after opening in the Fall of 2010. Accreditation is not just given to new schools when they open their doors. It must be earned through a lengthy process. And, Coleman earned it! Congratulations!.

This school is very nice for students who have issues turning in physical assignments. That was the main issue I had, until I transfered to CTCHS where we use small notebook laptops. All of our work is done on the computer and turned in to the teacher directly from the laptop. This simple interface change allowed me to become much more productive and my GPA raised significantly. The teachers are much more then the teachers I had before, they are personal friends and I look up to them and respect them much more then I would at a typical 30 person per classroom type school. The small school environment has it's ups and downs. We are a huge family, and everyone knows each other on a personal level and no one tolerates bullying. The small school also results in unnecessary amounts of drama, where everyone knows everyones personal business. The current campus is also entirely inside and on the stressful days, it can feel like you are being trapped inside for 8 hours. This school isn't for everyone, but for those who need more personalized education and enjoy doing work on the computer, this school might be just perfect for you.

Coleman Tech's staff are outstanding. They actually care and try to motivate the students to exceed their own expectations. The goal of the teachers is not only to teach the kids now, but to prepare and encourage them to progress to college or a trade school. this school is VERY high tech (as their name implies). Coleman Tech Charter High School (CTCHS) offers students a private school atmosphere while remaining a free public high school in San Diego County. The school provides students with personal laptops and uses Promethean technology as well as cloud computing to put it at the forefront in technological learning. Classes are small (less than 20 students) and the school strives to give all students the ability to pursue personalized learning. This includes opportunities for students to take online classes in various subject areas as well as the ability to begin various clubs and activities that students would like to see at their school.
