Weve been impressed by the warm, welcoming parent community and the clear sense of shared purpose among families, teachers, and staff.

The quality of the classroom experience has been outstanding. Even though our son entered school already showing strong early skills, we've been amazed by how much hes grown in just the first few weeks, academically, socially, and emotionally. The curriculum is clearly designed to challenge and support kids at all levels, and the learning feels joyful and meaningful.

When we were researching schools, we placed a high priority on strong communication, organized school operations, and an active parent community. VCES has exceeded our expectations on all fronts. The office staff is kind, responsive, and on top of everything, and parent involvement is not only welcomed but clearly woven into the culture of the school. Someone called it a "private school experience in a public school" and I think that'a a very accurate way to describe it.

This school made my child feel unsafe and uncared about. The office staff does not know their policies. They are rude, and the principal does not have. good communication skills she thinks she is superior to everybody and talks rude. My husband picked up my daughter three times and the fourth time she had the audacity to come up to him and ask for ID so the three other times she couldve left with a stranger which nobody knew who she was which made me question the school. She came into the school three weeks late and some of the children were very a little mean and instead of handling it, she tried to brush it under the rug. Be careful sending your child to the school. Some people have good experiences, but when its bad, its bad. I had to pull mine out

Incredibly nurturing environment. Project based learning, small class sizes. A dream public charter school in the valley, with staff and teachers who care about the whole child. Families are engaged and the school feels like a community.
My child has an IEP that the school enthusiastically supports and collaborates with us to develop.
There has been some turnover, but change is inevitable.

Love this place! The team here is incredible from principal to teachers, to support staff. They truly care about education and social emotional development of the children. I have had experience with multiple schools as we were trying to find the best. This is an incredible school for my children. Highly recommend to anyone who wants their child to be happy, listened to and supported.

I was so happy to see an elementary school nearby when choosing schools and VCES has turned out to be such an amazing school. I'm very pleased with every aspect of it: small classroom sizes, teacher assistants in every grade and a real dedication from everyone involved to make sure the entire school has a wonderful learning experience. My family could not be happier with this school.

Our daughter, now in 1st grade, has thrived at Valley Charter Elementary for the past two years; both socially and academically. She is genuinely excited to go to school. We have found her teachers thus far to be enthusiastic, insightful, and communicative. As an independent charter school they do ask for ample family participation with various fundraising events throughout the school year however you can see where the funding goes. They have renovated the recess playgrounds, added additional privacy screens on the perimeter campus fencing, etc. We love the small school community and the fact that there are only two classes per grade level. We feel connected to other parents as well as the staff. We look forward to sending our younger child to VCES when he is of age to attend.

We decided that we are leaving this beautiful school we once loved so much. It has been said many times but the turnover between staff and teachers is overwhelming. To the point, the school no longer shares information on leaves, replacements, etc. Two teachers on extended leave had their classes run by TA's. No notification or communication. Most grades came back from COVID and resumed as normal. Some, unfortunately had teachers so afraid of germs that they cancelled everything. Things that showed valuable to our kids, readathons, and math olympics. All other classes had some type of performance for families too except for these grades. There wasn't even an attempt to conduct these events safely, just cancelled. Not even an attempt to do on zoom or outside in smaller groups If you asked questions, you were shunned. Just like all the school functions, except fundraisers, cancelled. Extra incentive fundraiser was a raffle for tickets to Disneyland. BUT, no raffle was done, or 'winners' ever announced. The school has monthly PFC but really only two staff members attend. The school has a reading interventionalist and math help for certain kids, but not all. Kids are so desperately behind grade level. Parents run the school, and there is definitely seniority. There was a fair, random lottery of culmination tickets for families of 5th grade families. However, funny enough all the 5th grade parents who planned the 5th grade party and room parents were the fair, random winners of the front row tickets. Emails come from parents all the time asking for funds for this, that or another but no follow up ever given anymore to what the funds went to. When you have kids in multiple grades you will see the vast difference of how things are done from class to class. Emails are sent out for a peaceful protest from a parent school wide saying had principal approval which the next day was recanted. Covid testing takes on average 3 days for results, so if your child sneezes they have to miss a minimum of 3 days of school.

I've been a Valley Charter parent for two years now and could not be more satisfied with the care and education my sons have received. The leadership, teachers, and staff are warm and exemplary. The school has an authentic sense of community and is welcoming to new families and students. Furthermore, VCES knocked it out of the park during the pandemic and our experience with Distance Learning was as good as it gets. My family is looking forward to in-person school in 2021-2022, and growing further with Valley Charter.

Valley Charter's commitment to educating and nurturing the whole child is evident in all they do. I have had multiple children at this school, each child with very different learning styles and personalities than their siblings. Valley Charter has met each child where they were and help them thrive. The project based learning keeps my kids engaged and excited. I feel fortunate to have found this school for my family.

If you dont care about your kids learning but have a teacher judging, controlling and demanding them being up to par when they only like asking hypothetical questions, no spelling, and dancing then this is the school for you! Kindergarten and first grade here has failed my child! They seem like they like helping kids that are on the spectrum. However if they dont think its necessary they dont help. Spent most of the first grade watching YouTube videos and dancing. While on distant learning and trying to keep up with the teacher. Teacher expects kid should be as smart as her, or they talk and treat your child like they are in preschool. Theres no in between. When you complain or ask questions about their curriculum they like shaming and judge you. Principal doesnt care. I have an older kid who is doing fine but thats because shes a fast gifted learner and has to be sat next to kids that distract her. But that okay for the school. I tried giving them the benefit of the doubt because my older kids teacher actually cares and teaches them. I feel sorry for her because she needs to cover the slack from kinder and first. Shame.

VCES has a great curriculum that engages the students and makes them think outside the box. They focus on project-based learning to get the children out of the classrooms and into the community to truly comprehend what they're learning. They definitely emphasize on the children in becoming STRONG readers. They also study Singaporean math, which is AWESOME and CHALLENGING! Lastly, the teachers and staff care greatly for the students. Overall, I'm having a good experience at the school!

There is no "busywork". A worksheet reviewing the math that was learned that day is usual and the kids are expected to read a certain number of minutes a day at their reading level.

My children love school and, even more importantly, love learning. The teachers are passionate, dedicated and creative in their methods. Each grade builds on the previous ones. All the teacher of all the grades work together to make this happen. The kids do a lot of meaningful collaberative projects to bring the study topics to life. These projects are done during the school day, not sent home for parents to work on with their kids. If raising well-rounded happy kids who love to learn is your goal, this school is for you.

We love VCES! We have a 6th grade now at VCMS and a 3rd grader. They have thrived with the project based curriculum. They have developed problem solving, independence, critical thinking skills. Theres a strong focus on reading, writing and Singapore math. My kids natural curiosity and love of learning has really grown here

After experiencing the number of worksheets given for homework at an lausd school for 1 year, I was very thankful for the homework given at VCES. It is age appropriate and typically includes a math worksheet and reading. I strongly disagree with the other reviewer who stated that its excessive. I am a parent who believes there should be no homework in elementary school but I find what is given here does teach responsibility and can be completed in what I think is an appropriate amount of time - 10 min for 1st grade, 20 for 2nd, etc.

The teachers are so strong in guiding the kids to solve problems and advocate for themselves. They are also creative in solutions for handling academic or behavioral struggles. My sons have very different personalities and I felt that the teachers got to know them to understand what motivates them as learners. They were consistently prepared for the next grade.

This school has a very strong board consisting of educators and parents. There have been some changes in the principal but the core values of the school have been maintained. Also misbehavior is not tolerated and is handled in a respectful manner which includes measurable accountability.

This is my first year here at VCES. We moved down from Santa Cruz and I was in a panic searching for schools. VCES was definitely at the top of my list as I combed through the internet and meticulously searched every school review site. Thank God that I was able to get BOTH my children in. We absolutely love Valley Charter Elementary School. My daughter wakes up everyday excited to go to school. She comes home with enthusiasm and so many stories of things she learned, fun experiences she had and all the hands on Project Based learning she did that day. We love the small school environment with small classroom sizes and huge grass area. You feel like you are at a private school. The emphasis on social and emotional development was a high priority on our list when looking for schools and Valley Charter does an amazing job on helping kids grow socially and emotionally, we couldn't be happier. My daughter loves the hands on, project based learning, many field trips each year, Math Olympics, Read-a-thon and minimal homework with emphasis on instilling in her the love of reading. Valley Charter makes learning fun and allows kids to still be kids while going to school. We are beyond grateful to be part of this amazing school and community. I still tear up when I think about how fortunate my kids are to be in such a truly wonderful school environment.

They make learning very fun thru Project Based Learning and hands on experiences. Teachers are truly an extension of your household. Having small classrooms and a TA in each room allows them the opportunity to really know their students and their insight is very impressive. The amount of detail that goes in their progress report is as a parent had written it itself. They always see the best and the potential. There are no black lists of troubled students. Each student has the opportunity to start fresh each day and be their best.

I can go on and on, but if we are talking about character I have to mention Mr. Adam Myman as he models his entire curriculum on 4th grade on different character skills that students get to use at different times. Not only he uses this approach in class but has written about it and teaches about it.

From day one even in kindergarten students are told they are readers, writers, scientists, explorers, mathematicians, leaders. Students share their ideas and teachers include those in their lessons. (There are no text books so teachers make their own curriculum). Each year for their PBL (Proyect Based Learning unit) students decide what they want to do. Kindergarteners open their grocery store after visiting a real grocery store on a field trip. Students apply for their desired job and get interviewed. This school is teaching them at a very early age skills that will be beneficial for them for the rest of their lives.

My son has an IEP and from the beginning I felt the school joining me in making every year the most for him. In his previous school I felt I had to fight to get his resources. At Valley Charter it was as easy as expressing my concern and his kindergarten teacher saying I agree for him to get am everything that I had been denied at his other school.

we Have been fortunate and we havent experienced bullying. My son in several occasions expressed having troubles with some peers and the teacher always made a point to stay on top of it and give the kids tools to solve their problems.

I am extremely happy with this school. My kids are excited, engaged, part of a community, have fun learning opportunities a beautiful campus with a grassy field that kids are allowed to run and play. Their teachers are so caring, I cant even begin to explain what these teachers. Both the elementary and Middle school mean to my children. They believe in them, they encourage them, they let the kids make mistakes and really really celebrate accomplishments

Homework is incredibly excessive starting in kindergarten and it hasnt let up. Rather than fostering a love of reading we are jamming books down these kids throats to meet a predetermined quota of books each week. Teachers are never able to produce a list of on level books and instead give parents a vague description of what book qualities are on level. Parents then are stuck attempting to figure it out.

We truly believed this would be an excellent school choice for our children, but as the years have passed we believe this less and less. The teachers and TAs truly care about the students. The other parents (while often clique-ish and divided between stay at homes and working parents), have generally been nice and are trying to do the best for their children. You find your niche, and youll be okay. Its relatively diverse, although not entirely representative of the local population, which is an issue at most charters. The bigger problems are less obvious... Four people as principal in the past two years. Three music teachers in the past three years.
There are a lot of demands placed on parents to raise money AND to volunteer. Most field trips require close to a dozen parents to DRIVE the children in their private cars as well as chaperone. The guilting of parents to give them more money and then also get onto committees and volunteer in classrooms is nauseating. If youre paying teachers less than the average amount and not paying for textbooks, why cant you afford to charter a bus for most of the field trips? Our familys yearly donation alone should cover 5 buses, and we arent the only ones donating. I have no idea where the money is going at this point.

This is our second year at VCES and we feel so fortunate to be part of this community. I wanted to find a school environment in where there was diversity, community, and a different approach to learning. VCES draws from a constructivist approach in where the children are engaged in hands on and intentional learning experiences. My children come home so excited to tell me about their missions and challenges (project-based learning). The teachers nurture children intellectually, physically, socially and emotionally. I have noticed that students are reflective about what they are learning within their academic and social experiences. More importantly is that my children feel loved, supported and are excited to go to school.
I get excited by how they are learning and only wish that this approach to learning was accessible to all children. My kiddos love their school, what more can a parent ask for?

Valley Charter is fabulous on every level. This is my oldest daughter's 6th year and my younger twins' 3rd and every year gets better and better. The curriculum is so well thought out and implemented that the kids don't even realize how much they're learning because they enjoy it so much. Instead of lecturing kids on the planets, they put on a humorous play. Instead of teaching history they create a real life museum. I feel like I literally won the lottery to have my kids in this nurturing, fun and effective environment. The proof isn't in the test scores but if it was...my 5th grader tested high! I highly recommend VCES if you are looking for something alternative to the LAUSD experience. Or if you just like great schools.

Every teacher at this school is amazing. I have twins and there are only two teachers per grade so I would have a problem if there was any bad apples. I look forward to every year because of these great teachers.

The school has a strong focus on literacy and reading everyday is the main homework. There is not a lot of "busy work." I appreciate that as a parent and feel my kids have just enough to reinforce the lessons but nothing more to get in the way of family time and other activities.

My son has attended Valley Charter Elementary for the past two years, and the attention to each student is clearly shown. Teachers take the time to individually plan goals, and study guides. Friends and family in other schools marvel at the rate of improvement that my son has had in these two years. Staff is friendly and professional, the grounds are clean and their activities are some of the most creative I've seen for Kinder/1st-5 graders. Their reading-buddy system has been wonderful as it gives younger students an older partner and someone to look up to when it comes to reading.

Valley Charter Elementary School is a warm and welcoming school. The teachers are loving and smart. The education my kids are getting is unsurpassed and the individualized expectations have really been put the test! Conflicts between kids are not always handled by the aides on the yard, but if they reach the teachers, are handled swiftly and effectively. All in all not a perfect experience, but a great one!

Funny thing about writing this review is that I don't attend Valley Charter. But lots of my friends' families are there and they LOVE it. I've heard nothing but good stuff about it. I loved the tour myself. If we get in, we're going! Please ignore my star ratings - it's not fair to rate a school that I don't attend. I just wanted to comment on what I've heard.

First and foremost,this is a GREAT school! Our son is excited and happy about the many projects he is invoved in at school,and we couldnt be more thrilled! This is a school that cares,and we have never felt there were any "cliques" that affected things in any negative way....The teachers are really supportive and challenging,the staff is lovely,and parent involvement is strong.If your looking for a really fine school for your children,Valley Charter should be at the top of your list!!

For a parent faced with public school as the only other option, Valley Charter turned out to be a blessing. I am most thankful every day when my kids leave the house with big smiles and come home with big stories about all of the amazing things they did at school. High praise to all the teachers at Valley Charter and to an amazing principal and staff. As for the other parent who felt somewhat "left out" of what goes on with the parents and the play dates.... all I can say is don't take things so personally or you will be miserable all your life. It is up to you, as a leader and not a follower, to break down those barriers and extend yourself. I am a working parent and I find that simply volunteering at the school and becoming involved with the fundraisers and other school related events, people know me and I know them! You really have to put yourself out there to make things happen, and volunteering is a great way to do that. I am not one of those "clique" type parents and I have connected with many parents at VCES that care more about the kids than they do about themselves. It is not just about the play dates! It is about the kids and how we can best serve them.

The school, and it's community, talk about community building and embracing diversity, but it is ALL TALK and absolutely NO action! Most of the founding parents, that talk about "including" everyone, are happy that they will be out of there before he 50% diversity,HAS to be implemented, because its written into the charter! Is pathetic. The parents only allow play dates with children ,who's parents are with in their own "clique". I strongly believe that the only reason parents think is it such an AMAZING school is because they get to see all their own friends there. What're they reaching their own children? Just be friends with the classmates in the right zip code? Unfortunately, we made a mistake, by changing schools. We gave it 3 years, but nothing has changed. We will be gone next year. Academically speaking it is ok. My child is at least a year behind, we will be spending the summer, catching up.And we will find another school for next year.

VCES is a wonderful school! We made a tough decision to change schools mid-year and the transition could not have gone better. Amazing and nurturing teachers, differentiated instruction so that children learn more effectively, and a true sense of community, make the school stand out. Though the school may not have all of the enrichment activities and amenities of more established schools (private or public), they more than make up for it when it comes to creating an enriching project-based curriculum and environment in which the children truly love to learn and go to school. Before transferring to VCES, there were several mornings that our children did not want to go to school. I do not exaggerate when I say that our children NEVER complained about going to school once at VCES (not even for state testing!). In fact, after giving her teacher a hug goodbye on her last day of first grade, our daughter couldn t stop crying - she literally cried the entire drive home (and then some) because she was so upset at the thought of leaving for the summer. It s still summer break right now, but our children can t wait for September to be back at VCES! And we can t wait either!
