Our family’s experience with e3 Civic High was extremely disappointing, particularly regarding the support of our Black student. We raised multiple concerns involving harassment and our daughter’s safety, but we did not feel those concerns were handled with the seriousness or level of support we expected.

At graduation, members of our family experienced racial slurs and inappropriate comments involving individuals connected to issues we had previously reported. We contacted school leadership afterward seeking answers and accountability but were very disappointed with the response.

Every family’s experience may be different, but ours left us feeling that our daughter was not adequately supported when serious concerns were raised. I strongly encourage parents, especially parents of Black students, to ask detailed questions about how racial harassment, bullying, repeated conflicts, and student safety concerns are handled before enrolling.

A school should provide more than academics. Students and families should also feel heard, respected, and supported when they report serious concerns.

This is a unique school and I throughly enjoy working with the staff and students everyday. Good teachers are supported and encouraged by the administration. The students are challenged daily on rigor in lessons, Design Thinking and extracurricular clubs. The school is an environment that is constantly trying to improve and create more opportunities for the community.

This school lives out an incredible vision to engage and empower every student through a personalized education experience; inquiry-based Design Thinking/PBL curriculum; strong teachers and teams.

This school provides EVERY thinkable opportunity to help close the opportunity gap that exists between kids. Job shadows, internships, college road trips, study abroad trips--you name it, students at e3 will get it. When school shut down because of the pandemic, there were STILL new and innovative programs being shared with the kids, just online.

This is a positive. I've seen teachers and admin go out of their way to help the students who don't have the resources they need. They do a great job here helping students who are financially disadvantaged or come from unique backgrounds. I do believe more effort needs to be done in helping students with mental health problems.

No. This is almost laughable. The administration covers up issues with flashy posters and assemblies boasting that this school is a safe place for all, and promoting 'upstanders'. But it's nothing more than a sham. I'm personally a queer student who has dealt with a lot of bullying. Not only is the environment that the students foster extremely toxic, the admin does nothing but contribute when it's brought up.

When I started at e3 Civic High, I had a great experience. I was hopeful for the future of the school and impressed with what they managed to do. But as the years went on my experiences changed. I began to see through the facades put up by administration, and began to see the school for what it really is. It's a mismanaged mess with no communication between staff, students, and parents. Changes are made on impulse with no rationality or reasoning, only to be reversed when they inevitably crash and burn. The teachers are a mixed bag. Many are phenomenal, and go far beyond their sentry just to help students. However I can't even blame the poor quality teachers. They get paid significantly under average and get abused by admin, only to be fired at the end of the year. The school has great resources, such as laptops and access to the San Diego Library, but often fails to implement them in meaningful ways. Time is wasted daily on projects and initiatives that do little for the students. The student body has their own issues. There's a large problem with substance-abuse and bullying that rarely gets dealt with.

While this school has its issues, I don't believe it to be the worst option out there. They offer many good programs, especially for the underprivileged. e3 is not the worst choice you can make, but one has to understand and acknowledge its flaws.

One of the things I believe to stand out at e3 are the teachers. Not all are great, and some aren't even good, but there are a handful that go above and beyond for their students.

I believe that they try. The school runs constant assemblies and programs promoting the "e3 Way". From the behavior that I've come to see from students, these lessons make little difference. I've personally dealt with both teachers and students who think of little except themselves. I would not say that the administration holds much integrity. For instance, they've even made teachers and students write positive reviews on a site like this to inflate scores. Even worse can be seen in their punishments, where large issues are swept under the rug while minor rule infractions are blown out of proportion.

This is where I feel e3 has let us down. When I first started here in 2017 the leading administrator, Dr. Griffith, did an excellent job. Although things changed often and felt unstable, I felt that the changes were positive and leading us in the right direction. However in 2019 another administrator, Dr. Ward was placed fully in charge. I strongly feel that she doesn't understand how to make the right decisions. Her choices feel rash and detrimental to our learning. Some examples of this can be seen in recent months during the Covid-19 pandemic where both teachers and students were placed under high stress because of her choices.

I'v been a student here for 3 years and honestly it gets worse and worse each year. From seemingly arbitrary changes made to the schedule, teachers and admin not being on the same page about information, to low student morale and overall incompetency of certain staff, e3 looks very nice at face value with its sleek designs, uniforms and Macbooks given to every student; however, one won't have to look very far to see cracks in the facade.

They additionally offer students the opportunity to intern at local business and public agencies. This past summer a group of students studied abroad in China through e3 Civic High. This coming summer, students will be studying in both China and traveling to Mexico. This school offers students a unique high school experience that prepares them for college and the workforce.

It is a very diverse community. I love the fact that it is located downtown and in the library. It gives students access to resources that other schools do not have. They were very welcoming when I transferred here my sophomore year.

I am a current teacher at the school. To say the least, it has been an overwhelming positive experience. The positive impact this school has had on the scholars has been tremendous. I have seen not only academic growth with our scholars, but more importantly, growth as civically engaged members of our society. The sense of community that our scholars help create at school goes well beyond the walls of our school. Scholars have the opportunity to join Job Shadows and internships. Additionally, this year we have two international trips; to China and Mexico. The experiences prove to be engaging, empowering, and educational.

With our recent launch of competency-based grading we are able to help scholars with all sorts of learning differences achieve their full potential. We have a phenomenal SPED staff and EL staff that work countless extra hours to ensure all students can meet and exceed their learning goals.

I have been a teacher at e3 for 2 years and this is by far the best teaching job I've had. The students are engaged and the administration is supportive. Even when we have students coming to us 2+ grade levels behind with their skills we are given resources and opportunities to help them reach their full potential.

Homework policies vary from classroom to classroom, but no matter the subject matter students are offered a wide variety of resources to help them accomplish their work. With the library teen center and homework center literally below our feet, many students utilize the facilities after school. We also have "Mod 6" to help students with subjects and assignments they may be struggling with.

Staff spends a lot of time doing professional development to better their teaching pedagogy. We also do monthly learning walks to observe each other and learn from our different teaching styles. I think all of our efforts translate to the classrooms.

I've been a teacher at e3 for over 3 years and I think we have one of the best schools in the country. I could teach at another school but I choose to stay here. Yes, we are imperfect, but we have some positives that almost not other schools offer. We have small class sizes and great support for our students (scholars). We care about our students!

I have two students at E3 since 9th grade. My experience at this school has been great. However, the high staff turn over is concerning. The turn overs has affected the students because there is no consistency . I was also disappoint to find at, once my son had done all that was required to be admitted to SDSU, that there is no bridge to SDSU or UCSD as promised when we came to the school. Otherwise, it has been a wonderful experience.

We have encounter challenges at school in which is obvious that when they see a student needs counseling and direction they rather find a way to get the student out of school instead of helping and dealing with the student to do better. It seems like they only care about the good numbers and reputation while getting students that could jeopardize them out.

This past year, e3 has instituted Expert Groups. These groups are led by faculty and they become the experts using a professional text. Learning Facilitators (aka teachers) then lead the training for all staff. Instructional coaches now coach and mentor for expert teaching practices. Learning Facilitators are on Design Thinking teams to lead the work of the school. They have 3 year growth plans and set their own goals and participate monthly in peer observations to view best practices. The LF's support each other through mentoring, leading department work, and content planning.

The school is built upon a culture of respect and strong character traits. We use texts (7 Habits, Growth Mindset, and Chicken Soup for the Teenage soul) to support the Advisory curriculum that builds strong character traits. Teachers sincerely care about students and work really hard to support students. Humanities and arts do a great job with project based learning. Math and science is working hard to improve test scores, which have been gradually increasing. Bullying is definitely not part of the school culture. Students have access to state of the art facilities and innovative technological tools like MacBook Airs, IXL, Khan Academy, NoRedInk, GarageBand, etc.

e3 Civic High is a very innovative school. The students are being taught to be independent and proactive. The teaches take on various approaches to help all student succeed in high school and beyond. While it is a smaller school, the staff is very friendly and on a first name basis with you. Overall, the students here seem happy and well adjusted for life high school and life afterward.

We have had a good experience at this school. Our child has only been attending for a year, but we feel that the staff...including Dr. Griffith are very personable and approachable. While Admin has expelled students for bullying, they have done so after it has gone on for an extended amount of time, they do not follow the policies they claim to use and end up effectively punishing the victims as much as the perpetrators.

Faculty and student morale is terrible, the atmosphere is tense and hostile, Admin is inept and capricious - seeming to only care about reaping money from attendance and exerting control over others, while punishing anyone who questions them to any degree.

The ridiculously micro managing and petty administration has constantly changing standards, goals and strategies which are confusing and demoralizing to faculty and students. Teachers aren't allowed to teach or set deadlines without being constantly undermined by admin.

While many of the teachers are excellent, qualified and incredibly dedicated - they are constantly undermined, harassed and micro managed by insecure, inept, disorganized and petty administrators who are completely out of touch with their faculty and the student body. Morale among the faculty and students is terrible and the the high turnover of both is ample evidence of the terrible job admin is doing.

The hypocrisy, harassment and condescension exhibited by admin is not likely to develop strong feelings of compassion or integrity in the students - unless it is because many students band together to support each other when they are mistreated by this inept bunch of micro managers determined to try to control every little thing that they can.

Disorganized, petty, condescending, judgemental, hypocritical, micro managing, reactionary and hostile are the words that come to mind when considering the administration at e3 - the way that faculty and students are treated is horrendous. Not only are they driving away teachers, they treat the students terribly and seem to view them only as a revenue stream, toddlers in need of discipline or as statistics for the book they are currently writing.

Admin continually moves the goal posts, changes the rules and trips over itself trying to punish any perceived wrongdoing in anyone they view as beneath them - which is everyone. While there are policies purportedly to give support to students with learning differences, admin continually changes policy, enforces it unevenly, undercuts the teachers and seems interested in providing the appearance of supportive policies, rather than providing actual support.

I love e3 Civic High! I really believe that they care about both me and my son as individuals. It is a small enough school that they know us intimately. They go above and beyond what I would expect to make sure my son has the resources he needs, both academically as well as social-emotionally. They have an amazing administrative team that has great vision and goals for all of the scholars. They include community service time as well as job shadow days. They really care about their students and the special education team is amazing!!

When you approach the director and specially the counselors they show utmost professionalism and care to help the student and the parent resolve the issue. It is given a priority and the parent is part of the process of finding the solution that works best for the student.

Students are not overwhelmed by homework which allows them to spend time doing their own activities, my student is an A student very dedicated but at the same time she needs to become a well-rounded individual and be allowed to have a life outside of school.

Overall the teachers are dedicated and enthusiastic, some lack experience but when you approach them they try to help and meet you half-way to resolve any issues that may arise. Teachers are approachable but it's up to the student to open up and reach out for help. The standard is very high and most teachers need to double up as mentors because so many of our teens come from difficult situations at home.

I feel most students show respectful and caring behavior towards each other. The school spends a lot of effort trying to raise awareness among them to empathize and respect each other as well as to be honest in their work and to abide by school code of conduct.

As a working single parent it is impossible for me to attend the coffee meetings with the CEO and have a closer experience with leadership. I found it troubling when so many teachers left the school over the past 3 years because there's never an explanation offered but I also understand that it's a problem charter schools sometimes have when they're competing against district school salaries and benefits that they can afford to offer. I admire that leadership is always striving to show a professional appearance they just need to work on communicating with the parents in many ways so that we feel part of the community.

The incoming classes will benefit from expanded honors and AP courses, from the years of experience the school now has. My student was a guinea pig but I don't mind because in the process she learned to never fear testing and trying new strategies to learning. She experienced a dynamic learning environment where change to adapt to new needs was a constant challenge. I feel she learned so much from this experience that I have no doubt she will be ready for college and she will know herself and better be able to meet her learning style and needs because of what e3 offered her.

Turnover is terrible. The parent group fell apart last year over disputes with the administration and has not resumed although funds raised are sitting in an account.

Promises made regarding college prep classes and availabity to access AP was not as promised. I was told by a social worker that my child would have been better served going to Gompers.

There is a lawsuit for LGBT discriminiation by admin that is ongoing. There is no opportunity for students to participate in extra cirricular activities that would encourage school spirit, especially now that the parent group is not functioning.

My guess it depends on the level of your student. Mine is often stuck doing others work when group projects are required. My student strives for a high grade and will do others work to get it. But this trains my student for the real world.

In my my son's own words, "I have learned virtually nothing in the two years I have been at the school." To say that E3 HIgh is a disappointment is an understatement. They promised so much and delivered on so little. It has not prepared my son for college at all. It looks impressive on the outside but there is little substance on the inside.

I don't believe the problem is with the teachers, it seems to be with principal. She has tied the teachers hands so they are not able to teach effectively.

Good intentions, but terrible execution. This school is poorly run and in two years, seems to have a staff turnover rate of about 65%. That's not good for a new school. It means no stable curriculum or planning is happening, not to mention that the teachers obviously know something parents don't. If the majority of your teachers are leaving after every year, staff moral cannot be good. Maybe in five years or so they'll reach some stability, but not until administration changes.

My daughter is excelling in the 9th grade at e3 Civic High. She came from a no media private school and quickly adapted to the mac book and project based learning. In the first semester she joined the ovation choir, started an internship at a downtown business and is studying architecture with the ACE (Architecture, Construction, & Engineering) Program after school. The teachers are excited and inspired. The school is so new, there really isn't a solid parent involvement commitment yet, but I'm sure that's coming. The academic standards appear to be average. There is one AP course and no honors offerings as yet. There are no sports. The teachers are available after school in every subject Tuesdays and Thursdays for extra help. The Library also has many resources for teens including clubs, free tutoring, and SAT prep.

This is a very good high school for students who can handle project based learning. The teachers are wonderful and they are dedicated to helping students who want to excell to do so. Unfortunately some students have entered poorly prepared to take advantage of this and many resources must be directed to bring them up to a medium level. This is more of an indictment on San Diego elementary and middle schools. The school is evolving and will only be getting better with time.

My child has attended e3 since last school year & I have say the school the first poster is talking about is NOT e3. The students had their MacBook's last school year as well as educational software (to use in school as well as at home.) I have never seen/heard of such a contract that we the parents have to sign such as the one referred to and when I asked my 10th grader about it he just laughed. I will admit the school is not perfect, no school is. I would also like to point out that it isn't everyone's cup of tea. The school however offeres tutoring after school to those who need it & if you need extra help you can arrange tutoring with your teacher. I can check my child's grade online and have all of the teachers email addresses if I ever have to email them (and I have.) The school also has the goal of every student taking part in an internship. E3 Civic High has a lot going for it, however like we were told when we enrolled our child last year "we can take the students to the well, it is up to them how much they drink." Our student has taken to their classes and gets good grade. There is a reason the school has a waiting list.

This school is located in the heart of downtown San Diego inside the newly built city library. I enrolled my child into this school when it first open because it promised that it would be a leader by use of new technology with student involvement with downtown businesses. So far it has failed to acquire and successfully implement the technology (laptops) and the use of educational software for students to learn and study on their own. There is no way for parents to track the status of their child s grade or progress online. The school now is trying to implement Core curriculum standards by implementing their own take on the passing and failing conditions. It now has students and parents signing contracts of understanding that specifically states ...if you receive a failing grade in two assignments you will receive a failing grade in all subjects. This is totally out of standards with any educational practices. I wish I never enrolled my child into this school.
