The school actually does a great job of addressing bullying and offering help when a student is falling behind.

Overall, if your child is a social butterfly, DO NOT send him or her here. This is not a typical high school experience. Kids at this school, do not hang out after school. This school is a magnet school and the lottery to get in happens every year for the freshman year. The majority of the students do not know each other coming in and because the lack of leadership to nurture the social aspect, they often go 4 years not really creating a strong bond with each other.
The teaching approach is really good here and the facility is really nice.
The issue with the grading system is a huge problem. They use this " No Mark " system that is really confusing and each teacher and administrator have different understandings about it.
If your kid plays a sport, its is absolutely insane how they deal with clearing "no marks." A no mark is basically a failing grade/assignment. In a traditional school failing or missing an assignment would not hinder your ability to stay eligible to play on a team. At this school, if you fail or miss 2 assignments you become ineligible to play, during the season. Then your kid turns in the assignment or retakes quiz/test and passes. The student then has to wait for the teacher to grade the assignment ( no priority is taken) the assignment goes on the bottom of the pile and the teacher can take his or her time to grade. The assignment is graded, then a slip is generated at the convenient time of the teacher to clear the no mark. The no mark is then given to the student to hand to the Athletic Director for clearance. The process after the failed assignment was turned in can take 2 weeks. In 2 weeks, up to 6 games and 6 practices can be missed. The crazy part is, a student can have a GPA over 3.5, miss 2 assignments or get a bad grade and then become ineligible. The "no mark" system here is absolutely ridiculous and I've seen parents and students relationships strain trying to figure out how to clear them, and why its taking so long to do so.
I was smitten by the campus and was excited for my kid to attend the school here because the facility is really nice. He went four years here and at the end was not prepared for college. If your kid is really into sports, DO NOT send him/her here. If your kid is a social butterfly, DO NOT, send him/her here.

The school uses a 5 pillar theme, but the students mock it because its real corny. The school tries to focus on academics and does nothing to nurture the social aspect of the students. In this category they fail miserably in one of the most important aspects of a young students character.

The new principal Ruth Hellams is a non-leader. She loves to push accountability on to other people other than herself.

It's been great so far. My teachers and cohort are both nice. We get along well. I'm satisfied that the classes we take are already decided because that means I'm not only going to meet the A-G requirements, but I'm going to meet the UC requirements too.

The reason there is not much homework is because it's not necessary. When homework is assigned, it's a page of notes for something we missed in class or an essay about a topic we learned in class. Students and teachers are both happy.

Many of the teachers want to see you succeed. My experiences with them have all been great, they're all very kind.

It changes each grade level, but the class you have will stay with you for an entire school year. This has allowed me to make friends I didn't think I'd make and talk to more people.

We usually talk about our pillars in advisory and they're all about making you a better person and leader.

There's a never too late to learn policy, which allows students to make up anything they didn't pass, and teacher's stay after school for tutorial at least once a week, many stay twice a week. They'll even make appointments with students so that it'll be a one on one study session.

Many of the kids are very respectful. I think most feel comfortable talking to teachers, the principal, or the counselor if anything happens.

It does not prepare you for college. Whenever I had problems with bullying they did nothing. They don’t have good programs for kids with disabilities. This school develops a bad Character in most kids. Most of the teachers do nothing to help all of the students. Most only help a few of them. This school does not have any actual homework assignments.

My daughter is in her Freshmen year at Del Lago and absolutely LOVES it! She says bullying is not as bad in public schools and that the student body is very kind and compassionate. She enjoys that the school has a ton of student involment and that they have a say in which sports and activities are supported. The teachers are very involved and work very hard to ensure that if you are behind they catch you up. The teachers connect with students with personal stories and inquire about their students personal lives. As a father I can say that I was worried sending my daughter to this school initially, however it is has been such a wonderful experience for my daughter. She is so much happier than when she attended Bear Valley Middle School. I wouldnt hesitate to send your child here!!

I'll be in the third graduating class of Del Lago Academy and I've seen it grow quite a bit in my time here. Our original principal, Mr. Nuthall, founded this school to show the world that anyone can be proficient at STEM subjects and his goal has been achieved. Scholars at Del Lago graduate with proficiency in scientific fields regardless of their ethnicity or gender and many of us intend to further our scientific careers in college. I could go on and on about my time here but trust me when I say that this school will produce a much more responsible, insightful, and well-rounded scholar than any other high school in our district.

I attend a top university.

After talking to my fellow DLA graduates who are also attending high-ranking universities, I can conclusively say that DLA's curriculum will NOT prepare you for this environment.

Get ready to play catchup in college.

It is my son's second year. Just met with his counselor and we are excited for his upcoming Junior year and love the option of taking honors courses, along with AP classes his senior year.
Great communication with teachers and staff. Very friendly.

Del Lago gives scholars amazing opportunities to grow academically and maturely. Going to this school has been an amazing opportunity and everyone should know!

The teacher and the principal really care about the students succeeding. I like the fact that when a child does not pass the test, the school see it as the child not understand the section and the teacher offer at school tutoring to help the students with sections they did not pass. My oldest son graduated Escondido High and this school is expecting and teaching at a lot higher level than Escondido high.

My student just started her second year at this school and I am not impressed. Trying to communicate with teachers there is frustrating -- either non-responsive or rude. The no-mark system is good in theory but a disaster in the implementation and steps involved to follow through. X-block classes are random and teachers do not seem to have the qualifications to teach them (drama/music) sports are very limited. No AP classes available.
