I attended this school for 4 years. It has academic rigor and amazing teachers that support students. They provide the resources necessary for your child to thrive. When I attended the school they gave me personalized help. I would stay after school with my teachers and they would help me in whatever it is that I needed. They encouraged me to improve.

Our experience at New Horizons Charter Academy has been exceptional. The teachers are dedicated and genuinely care about the students's growth and success. My child's teacher is always helpful and attentive, and its easy to communicate with her when needed. I'm also happy that each classroom has a TA, my child loves both her Teacher and the Teacher Assistant.

I love our small little school. Its a safe secure and most importantly everyone knows everyone. Everyone is out and helping each other in the mornings. I personal wouldnt feel the same way if we were in a bigger school. Sophia loves and appreciates everyone at school. Thank you.

All teachers are highly qualified and I have seen them work late into the evening preparing for the next day. My daughter is exceeding and enjoys going to school everyday. She even wants to go when she feels sick because she doesnt want to miss a science lab.

Each kid learn differently whether he or she has individual education program or not, the school doesn't provide effectiveness in supporting students. Those who has individual education program are often pull out the classroom to work with a special educator, one on one, in a small hallway or right next to the bathroom. Obviously not the best way to support kids. Kids are required to learn a new subject within 15 minutes before they rotate to a new station whether they work on technology or individually, and are often lost about the subject.

We cannot deny that we see an increase on bullying, however this school is doing nothing to prevent it. Kids often go home and complain about what another kid did to them, and when parents try to find out the situation, none of the staff knows.

Over all this school is small, overcrowded with a lot of "promises" to succeed but none of them are being kept seriously. All administrators are in one room with the secretaries. One on one are often seen outside the room, or next to the bathroom. Hallways are overcrowded with carts and other objects. Rooms and bathrooms are often filthy. I wouldn't recommend sending your kids there!

They give homework every single day and most of the time is online and often the children don't have access to technology and are unable to finish it. If they have access they often do not understand the homework because during the day teachers are often going off topic. If they stay on topic, explanation is briefly about 15 minutes or so because a class is divided into three groups: independence work, technology work, and instruction. They have to learn a new subject for 15 minutes each subject which make it difficult for those who have a hard time understanding. Most of the homework is not online and teachers get mad at the students for not completing it and calling them liars.

There are some teachers that care. However, sadly, most of them do not really care they just get the "job" done. Some teachers yell at their students for no apparent reasons. Often teachers are late, taking a long break or lunch., to pick up their class. Teachers take advantage of the technology they have in the classroom to show videos to kids that are not part of the curriculum. Some of these videos have profanity language. They even lock the doors to avoid any administrator walking in. They are often on their phone and they do not realize what's going on in the classroom. When kids seek help, teachers often get upset and tell them that they have already explain it. Some teachers do not even have the right qualifications and permits to teach a class and yet they are teaching.

Homework programs are amazing, online and paper sheet for all week, so they are free to play and share with the family on weekend. Love it. And they still learning a lot.

The best school ever, my daughter's teacher Ms. Johnson 1grade and her T.A, was the best teacher, very patient,kind and a great teacher! my daughter and us we love her, the school has awesome program to teach the kids, they really are professional in everything they do. I had to move out the state, otherwise my daughter would still be attending this school no doub about it.

After having read the negative reviews and being a parent of two children that have gone to New Horizons ("NH") for the past three years, I thought I should give my two cents, so potential parents can get a broad spectrum of opinions upon which to base their decision on whether they want to send their son or daughter to NH. As mentioned, we have sent our children to NH for the past three years and under Mr. Thomas, the current principal, there have been vast improvements. One thing that he did was upgrade the technology in the school by placing smartboards in all classrooms and having laptops in classrooms. This is important because all statewide testing is now on laptops, so it is important to get the kids used to taking tests on laptops. Yes, there has been high teacher turnover, but that is common in charter schools. In addition, the teacher salaries were below market because this was a new school. If parents went to board meetings they would have a better understanding of the inner workings of the school. The teachers did receive a substantial pay raise this year. There has been conflict between the teachers and Mr. Thomas. I believe that is partly due to the change in teacher attitudes; many of the teachers are millennials and are not used to how the working world operates. This is also a young school that is still experiencing growing pains, but teachers appear to be getting used to Mr. Thomas' style. The school is small, which we like because it is much more like a community. I do believe room will need to be found to accommodate future classes. The curriculum is very challenging. Speaking to friends of ours who send their kids to a private school, my daughter's class is further along in math. The demographic make-up is very diverse. Latinos comprise the largest portion of students, but there are whites, blacks, Asians and Aremenians - a nice mixture. Many of the Latinos came from a nearby low performing school, which I believe accounts for the low test scores. However, we are very satisfied with our children's education at NH. I see complaints about inflated test scores. The state scores can't be inflated so I don't understand this contention. If a parent thinks his child is not meeting standards, the parent has to take initiative. The school provides tutoring. The school, IMO, is focused on student academics. Hope this helps.

The principal has stated that he expects all students, including the super young kiddos, to read for at least 30 minutes, preferably an hour, each day on top of their regular homework. This is far beyond their cognitive abilities. Does he know anything about child development?

It's clear that respect and responsibility are not attributes that the administration is fostering. Blatant lies are told to parents and teachers, and teachers aren't aware of what is happening and don't have regular communication. These are the qualities that are being engrained in the students- dishonesty, disrespect, inability to communicate, and lack of responsibility. The teachers are worn out and beaten down and as much as they want to do well for the students (no teacher enters the career for the money), the ready-to-snap feeling is carried into the classroom. The administration is decidedly terrible. Run- don't walk- away from this place!

The school has been a huge disappointment!! I must agree with the majority of negative reviews on here, since I have talked to the teachers myself that have come and gone. The parents that are content with the school are obviously new and have not been there since the school opened in 2013. They are unaware how the school started out and where it stands today. There's constant chaos that's occurring internally. The school has had many transitions in a short period of time. The current principal is the third one to come in. All the original teachers didn't return the second year, because of the false information on the charter petition. Last year all the teachers were new. Some left during the middle of the school year, leaving the students with different substitutes throughout the year. Too many students last year in 2nd- 7th required after school tutoring twice a week in addition to attending their "Saturday Academy." All this, because of low state standard scores and not meeting quarterly benchmarks. Many students are not reading at grade level or are a grade level behind and they are still being passed. The principal has stated at meetings their's many students at Tier 3 (red flag). The school is obviously not meeting state standards. The principal will not inform this to the parents. Parents can find results online and compare for yourself or call the Charter School Division Dept. Parents are disappointed, since many left their local public schools in hopes of a better education at a charter school that petitioned many great things. New Horizons is now a Title 1 School. Going on its third year all teachers are new (except 2) including the majority of untrained aides. Many students didn't return this year. The founder of the school is nowhere in site, board member change frequently. The school should be established, but it isn't. The school is relocating due to space. The new location is uncertain. Expect new staff once this happens. Knowing all this is worrisome for the future of the children attending this school. I doubt the school will ever be what it petitioned for. I expect a lot more families leaving after this school year. This school is quickly falling apart!

There is no school nurse! My child must go to a secretary or teenaged school assistant to receive first aid! I've spoken with multiple new teachers who reported that they are untrained in first aid. The old teachers received CPR and bloodborn pathogen training last year in April! I am disgusted in this school's administrative choices.

While the teachers teach character skills to the students, poor character is rampant among the adults at this school. Breaks are non-existent to half of the teachers, which does not develop fairness. Some adults communicate wrong information to certain teachers and then they get in trouble, damaging the work environment and causing their to be no team work. If teachers speak up to address concerns, they are targeted and punished, the teachers have no voice at this school.

This school could be wonderful; teachers are highly qualified and hard working. Unfortunately, the administration is very micromanaging and dishonest. Teachers in K-2 do not have a prep time; they are frustrated and angry often due to the lack of support from administration. The number of online programs is excessive and teachers are not trained how to use each one properly, but told to figure it out. The overall environment and atmosphere of the school is toxic and negative. Many teachers and employees are looking for other jobs, it is unfortunate and sad that the students have to continually suffer due to poor leadership and extremely high turnover.

Negative work environment that reflects on student's education. Teachers are not supported by administration and there is obvious tension. This leads to a school community that is in constant transition. You never know what to expect! Hopefully teachers will return next year, or this school will again be starting over!

They have small classes and an aide in each classroom. They have laptops in each class and are tech savey. I can check on my child's progress online each day and see grades. The faculty and staff are dedicated and caring. We love this school and their innovative use of technology. I know my child will be prepared for today's world.

A hidden gem in North Hollywood the teachers are caring & the children are all happy. The classrooms all have cameras. The kids all like the playground. They also enjoy the breakfast & lunch which is healthy. This is a school that will rise in no time!!
