The project-based learning keeps kids engaged and curious, and the focus on diversity and socio-emotional growth creates a supportive, inclusive environment. While building community can be a challenge since it’s a commuter school with families coming from all over, that same mix contributes to the school’s unique and diverse character. The staff is approachable and always willing to meet to discuss any needs or concerns.

We have been at HTe since 2019 when my oldest started kindergarten and will be there until 2033 when my youngest will graduate 5th grade. So far, we have had a great experience and our kids have thrived. We love the Project Based Learning becuase it really gives our kids ownership of their education. This is evident with the excitement that they feel about their projects and their ability to articulate what they are learning about to others. My kids feel safe, valued, and seen at school. They really emphasize Social Emotional Learning and approach problem solving in collaboration with the students instead of using and adult led system of punishment and consequences. This has helped my kids to be able to solve problems and disputes on their own and look for the good in others.

We have had great experiences with almost all of the classroom teachers. They really know what they are doing and have a strong commitment to connecting with the kids and forming bonds that support their educational goals.

The building is beautiful and really fosters a community environment. Though, it is a bit low on space and there are challenges to find places for everything.

Some of the challenges are the commuter school model makes it hard for out of school connections with classmates, a younger teaching staff, and high admin turnover. But I know the new Director, Dr. O. will bring more stability and growth to the school moving forward.

I would recommend this school to anyone looking for a diverse learning environment that is dedicated to equity in learning, exciting learning opportunities with real world applications, passionate and dedicated teachers, and a safe space for kids to learn, grow, and express themselves.

I love HTe. The concept of Project Base Learning is really cool. It's really preparing the students in the corporate world. The exhibitions are great and I love how kids are putting their efforts to put it together. My daughter is 5th grade now and her self confidence to speak in front of a big crowd is excellent.

In our case, the teacher turned a blind eye to the bullying. Each time I notified her she said she would talk to the bully and her parents. At first she seemed concerned but there was never a resolution and the incidents kept coming; 7 total. When I conveyed my concern she was defensive, and combative about her beliefs regarding physical separation (she doesn’t believe in it). She was unprofessional and rude, even rolling her eyes at me and becoming visibly annoyed and angry. She said no child will be restricted from walking freely around her classroom. This included a child that was scratching, hitting, hair pulling, pushing, and ripping our daughter’s necklace off. The director didn’t seem to think the problem was on their end. They seemed very confident in their restorative justice approach even though the teacher had been employing that technique for over two months with no resolution. They did not treat the bullying incidents as serious and they failed to abide by the law in terms of reporting and prompt resolution. While I can see why the school favors restorative justice in theory, they failed to provide our child with a safe and healthy learning environment. She was emotionally distressed just about every day at HTe.

Again, there is a lot of talk about respect and equality, but that is not what my daughter experienced. While there were some children that possessed these qualities, and I suspect that had more to do with their family culture, the majority did not. There was a lot of crude talk, name calling, inappropriate “games” on the playground, and a lack of respect for authority. I frequently witnessed children behaving in a disorderly fashion. The general environment is chaotic and disorderly. I didn’t notice this on the tour but once I spent some time in the school during the school day it was evident.

I do believe the administration at this school means well. However, what they say and what they do are two different things. There is a lot of talk about collaboration, respect and equality but when it came down to us advocating for our daughter’s safety, it was their way or the highway. There was an arrogance and disregard for alternative viewpoints and solutions. Also, the director was aware of the ongoing problem for some time and she didn’t bother to contact us or respond in a timely manner. When we did finally meet, she all but preached restorative justice practice as the only solution. She refused to consider a classroom change or that there was any problem with her staff. She did not address the issues with the teacher and told us she would look at her schedule to meet again to address the teacher/parent communication portion of the problem. Again, we didn’t hear from her for over a week at which time we decided to leave the school.

Our experience at this school was pretty bad. Our child’s physical space and boundaries were violated almost daily and she became emotionally distressed in her time at HTe. Our attempts to advocate for our child’s safety were met with resistance and disrespect. The shiny new building and “modern” approach to academics were appealing to us at first but they proved to be of little value. Our child is at a new school and is thriving. I thought she would have an adjustment period due to her experience at HTe, but she has had zero issues and is back to her happy self. She comes home each day excited about her day, teachers, and friends. I noticed she learned more in two weeks than she did in 4 months at HTe. Parents, consider the underlying philosophy at HTe. It is something I missed at first but see clearly now. If you want your child to be in an environment that teaches and models respect, integrity, and values, this is NOT the school for you. They say one thing but their actions prove otherwise.

There is no homework. While HTe has their theory on why they don’t give homework, in practice our child learned more in 2 weeks at a school that does give homework than she did in 4 months at HTe. She enjoys doing her homework and is clearly proud of herself once she accomplishes it each night. Homework teaches responsibility and also encourages open communication between parent and child regarding what they are learning each day at school.
