First year at the school. My kids love it here. My youngest didnt enjoy school where we were previously and we had a hard time getting him to go. There are many fun things this school provides that makes it more enjoyable for him. They get to take a semester of taekwondo, they do something called MAJORS week twice a year in which they get to choose a fun class to take for a week like sports, cooking or drawing. They do a jog-a-thon with foam, have theme weeks, get to take language (right now its mandarin), get to dress up as their favorite character for literature day, and then they get a fun award ceremony for academic achievement. All around it has been the most positive experience for us. The principal is very friendly and approachable and the teachers have all been fantastic.

My son started at OPA during the pandemic. He had an incredibly hard time adjusting to the school structure during remote learning and the transition to in-class learning. As a result, he had behavior problems that impacted his learning. The OPA team has done such an incredible job over the years to give him support so he could become comfortable and learn. He has now mostly overcome his anxieties, makes tons of friends, and his doing great academically. We 100% believe we wouldnt have these same results at other schools and the OPA staff deserves full credit.

My daughters love OPA-SV. The teachers are all very professional and truly caring for the kids. There are tons of clubs and after school activities for the students to choose from and develop their interests. I witnessed my younger daughter growing from a nauty troublemaker to a mature and hardworking promising student. I cannot say enough to show my appreciation to the teachers! Highly recommend OPA-SV.

My son is in 8th grade and has been at the school since 2nd grade. Last week, the administration handed our Behvaior Contracts to every single student regardless if they deserved the discipline or not. This goes against the school policy as stated in the Parent Handbook. I would not send a child to this school. If I was a teacher there, I would quit. The administration has no accountability. If my son wasn't as "thick skinned" as he is, I would be pulling him and sending him to another school for the next two months.

This school doesn't teach well and some of the 7th-grade teachers don't teach anything to their students.

This review is for independent study program. My son attended the 1st grade program for almost two semesters. We are very unsatisfied and decided to do homeschooling for the rest of the 2nd semester.
The first thing we are unhappy is regarding to teacher parents meeting. After the first parents/teacher conference in first semester, we were not invited to any other parents/teacher meeting at all even though iReady showed my sons academic performance dramatically regressed in the 2nd semester.
The second things is that teacher neglected the students feelings. My son asked me many times why the teacher didnt call him when he raised his hand. We have to find excuses to comfort him for teachers mistreatment. His dad told him maybe teacher will call him when it is his turn. He told his dad when it is his turn, the teacher skipped ed him and go back to the first one. There were only about 10 kids in the class. I have no idea why the teacher treated my son this way and hurt the kids feelings.
The third thing is the teaching style. I am not sure other kids, but my son didnt like Video tape assignments. The program had this type of assignment almost every week. It requires the kids to finish the recording within one minute without looking the note and answering all the requested questions. One time, my son was crying because he cannot squeeze all the info that teacher required into the Video. Besides video tape, there are 3-5 quizzes every week with a lot of homework and readings. For those quizzes, you didnt know which questions you got wrong and there is never the explanation of the incorrect one.
The last one is iReady. Whats the purpose of iready? The School used iReady to evaluate students leaning progresses. They did one evaluation in the beginning of the semester, another one at the 2/3 of semester, and used iReady for daily practice. After iReady evaluation assessments, iReady supposed to generate the topics you need to learn for daily practice. My sons ability in math was evaluated at 3-4th grade. However, iReady still let him practice 45-60 sessions of additions. I looked at the sessions, but the more complicated topics only give a few self-tutoring lessons. The teacher is totally not pay any attention to iready result or progress. She just does her regular teaching routine.
For the above reasons, I would not recommend this program.

Homework depends of the grade so the older grades will get more homework. The last two years school got better trying to balancing the load of homework.

We love our school, this is our 4 year at OPASV and I can't see my 3 kids in another school. Parents are very involved in the kids education, great school and amazing life lasting friendships.
