This is the first year that the school is wall to wall Mandarin Immersion Program (MIP), it's such a great energy on campus - and great to see the recognition from the district to dedicate a school fully to immersion learning. We have an incredibly engaged parent community, that donate both time and money, the latter goes to help fund teachers aides - bringing down the student teacher ratio significantly. We also have the top test scores in Capistrano Unified, especially important in Mathematics.

It's amazing to see my little kids picking up a language that neither parents speak, it will give them such a competitive advantage for college applications the job market when their older, and open up a realm of travel possibilities.

I'd discount any reviews prior to 3 years ago, very different school - as it still housed an english only program before, and unfortunately there was some tension and friction between the programs. Part of why the district saw fit to have a dedicated campus - such a great decision!

Our daughter started here in Kindergarten. She is now in first and I have a Kindergartner coming in next year. We thought an immersion program would be a great option as it is part of the district. And as we speak Japanese at home this seemed like an interesting option to us. It was a bit concerning that our kids would have to learn both English and Mandarin. But this has not been a problem. Everyone is very helpful to make this work. Teachers/Staff/YCMA. there are options at the YCMA to help them get started over the summer before school starts. They really have integrated with everything nicely. Parents are also very involved I think as this is a special opportunity Everyone puts in effort to make this a great school. The school had just gotten the new principal, Dr Kim. She has been wonderful very involved with the school and kids. You can easily see the dedication. I highly recommend the option if you are interested in an Immersion program.

We are extremely happy with the principal Dr. Kim, the families, the curriculum, and the overall learning environment.
Our child entered the program with Japanese as the only fluent language. She could barely speak English and had absolutely no knowledge of Chinese.
It was tough for her at first, but within six months she became comfortable speaking English, and after one year she was able to have conversations in Chinese as well!

This school attracts families who are highly motivated to help their children learn a second (or third) language, so the academic atmosphere is very positive. Families are also incredibly supportive when it comes to volunteering and school events, which creates a wonderful community.

More than half of the students start with no Chinese background, so there is no sense of comparison or pressure. Instead, the kids help each other, and its beautiful to see how naturally they grow together.

Its a very diverse environment with families from many different countries and cultural backgrounds. Im grateful that my children can grow up in a community where everyone is different and everyone is valued. We couldnt be happier with this school.

For a first time school parent, I can not be more happy with our choice, we did inter district transfer to be at this school, and it has been far beyond my expectation. My child has went from only speaking English to singing Chinese songs, count in Chinese to 50 and sometimes full sentences in the matter of 3 month. She is also grasping the concept of addition and be able to write most of the alphabet. This school is academically strong, but also play based for TK, my child is making lots of friends and just seeing her happy is priceless. The parent community also stands out, everyone is so nice and helpful, which is exactly what I needed as a first time school mom.

Our son is enrolled in the Mandarin Immersion Program, and we have nothing but excellent things to say about it. The teachers and parents are highly involved in the childrens education, and there are outstanding resources to help students thrive in this bilingual environment. We highly recommend this program to both bilingual families and parents who dont speak Mandarin the school does an incredible job teaching children to become fluent, giving them a valuable and versatile skill that will prepare them for the future.

My daughter currently attends TK at Bergeson and it has been an amazing experience for her as well as us as parents. We had hopes that this school would be a good fit for us and it has been. Everybody from the staff, teachers, parents and students have been so welcoming. She is excited to go to school and learn all the things including Mandarin - this is coming from a 4 year old who didnt know a single Chinese word before starting. We are transferring from another district - the paperwork and approval process went smoothly without any issues. TK here is a full day program unlike many others. This was a big plus for us working parents. YMCA on campus is also available where she is grouped with kids her age. They do crafts, sports and dance all included in regular tuition. We are excited to be a part of this community and to continue her growth and education at Bergeson.

Our daughter has been part of the Mandarin Immersion Program (MIP) at Marian Bergeson Elementary since kindergarten, and we couldnt be happier. The program offers something truly special a rigorous academic foundation combined with the incredible gift of bilingualism and cultural understanding.

The teachers are exceptional, blending warmth, structure, and creativity to help every child thrive in both English and Mandarin. Even more impressive is how the school fosters confidence, curiosity, and global awareness skills that will benefit these students for life.

Beyond academics, the community is welcoming and diverse. Families are engaged, supportive, and genuinely care about helping one another. The Friends of MIP parent group works tirelessly to raise funds for aides, cultural events, and extra learning opportunities that make the program feel alive and connected.

The leadership team at Bergeson has done a great job maintaining a nurturing environment while continuing to grow the program responsibly. Our child loves going to school every day shes reading, writing, and speaking Mandarin with pride and excitement.

If youre considering an immersion program, this is one of the best choices in Orange County. Its a public school with private-school results, and its building the next generation of bilingual, confident leaders.

We are a non-mandarin speaking family and have been thrilled to see how much mandarin our kids are picking up with ease. They make the learning fun in kindergarten with lots of songs and craft projects throughout the year. The new TK has also been a pleasant surprise with how much our second child loves going to school. We love that it is more play based and that there are plenty of opportunities for us parents to volunteer to help with all the fun activities they plan! Overall, the school is much better organized than our experience at a different preschool. They have a great after school care option, and they just brought back a drama club that even the TK kids can participate in! We are happy we found this community- the parents truly care about making this a great school and the principal Dr Kim is wonderful.

As a teacher at Marian Bergeson Elementary School, I am incredibly fortunate to be part of such a vibrant and supportive school. The Mandarin Immersion program on site is like no program I have ever experienced. The Mandarin teachers work constantly to not just provide curriculum of state standards, but teaching a new language and culture to young minds. Bergeson is truly a shining example of what an educational environment should benurturing, collaborative, and inspiring.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Bergeson is the strong partnership between parents and the school. Our parents are deeply involved in their children's education, volunteering in classrooms, organizing events, and participating in school activities.

Our students are a joy to teach. They come to school each day full of enthusiasm and curiosity, eager to learn and grow. Their positive attitudes and respectful behavior create a classroom atmosphere that is both productive and enjoyable. Witnessing the scholars speak, sing, and write in Mandarin is truly inspiring. Their acceptance to different cultures, food, and language is what makes each day here unique.

We enrolled our daughter in the Mandarin immersion program. She is in TK this year and she already knows all her colors, shapes, and can count up to 100 all in Chinese! She can also speak and understand basic Chinese phrases and even identify a few characters at this point. We dont speak Chinese at home or try to pressure her. Needless to say, I am very impressed with this school, the Mandarin immersion program, and the teachers. Learning a second language is such a valuable skill that we are able to provide for our kids. I really wish I had something like this when I was young.

We couldnt be happier with our experience at Bergeson Elementary! The Mandarin Immersion Program, the only TK-12 one in all of Orange County, is such an incredible opportunity for our kids. The teachers are amazingexperienced, dedicated, and always growing professionally. Our kids' proficiency in Mandarin, ELA, and Math is impressive, thanks to the schools strong academic focus and high expectations.

The sense of community here is fantastic. Families are very involved, and theres a real support network among everyone. The environment is safe, and the curriculum is challenging, but in a way that encourages growth. The new principal is greatshe communicates well and focuses on building strong relationships with the families, students, and staff, which makes a big difference.

We are so grateful our children are at Bergeson. Its a school that truly cares about its students, and we highly recommend it!

It was a horrible experience! My son was bullied at first day of school, kids saying words like "You're gross! Yucky! and Not normal" because he has a tiny ear tag. The teacher wasn't even aware this was happening for days until I brought it to her attention. She has been speaking to me every end of class to say my son talks a lot, my son was not behave in line, my son yelled at some one (which btw is the same kid who's bullying him) and told my son to be kind to others without even knowing why my son reacted that way. It's my son's first in person experience ( homeschooled K-1st G) and the teacher was not supportive at all almost like blaming being homeschooled saying 'he probably missed important social milestones while being homeschooled'. How can he join the boys group if 90% of them does not want to include him because he doesn's speak Spanish. He was confident and full of self esteem until he went to this school even asking me to move out of state, so it was that bad! One time they put my son in detention, a 6yold who repeatedly said that he just accidentally stepped into the Girl's bathroom when he and his girl glassmates were playing catch. He was put into detention for that but not those kids who deliberately bully not once but repeatedly in class, during recess, following him until lunch time. I am appalled with the kind of culture this school has. 2 weeks is enough torment for my son. Bye!

Great school until a new principal, Jayne Martin took over. She is a complete departure from previous principals. She is rude, condescending, has horrible people skills and seems to target minority Hispanic students and their parents. You can usually find her yelling at those parents during morning drop off. Very disliked by the parents you speak with, and I would assume the staff. Saw her talking in her usual condescending way to a teacher during open house. Hopefully after her interim appointment she retires and finds a job better suited for her lack of people skills. Otherwise, all the teachers my child had were excellent. Caring, compassionate, and eager to help. I feel from them under the new principal, as her values dont reflect the values of the teachers.

We love Bergeson! We're so happy with the teachers and the kids. We haven't noticed any bullying, and the academics are top-notch. The parents really care too. It's a great school. For people who complain, I feel like they would have a bad experience anywhere they go.

We love this school! We went for the Mandarin program and couldn't be happier. This program is a hidden gem in Orange County. I'm surprised more people don't know about it and use it. I couldn't be happier with the teachers, students, and parents. Everyone wants to be there, and it's a great learning environment and community.

Meh...Pretty mediocre. Large classes and ineffective administration. Teachers are hit or miss some are great some are completely worthless and just riding the tenure train. Unless you were considering the Mandarin program I would say go elsewhere

We absolutely love the Marian Bergeson dual immersion Mandarin program. The teachers and staff are extremely committed, and the parents are very involved. The kids are all very close, and we haven't noticed any bullying whatsoever. I feel very forunate that we get to be part of program with such committed faculty and staff!

One of the second grade teachers corrects students with contemptuous, scornful words and tones and makes both students and parents cry. She even does this when the parents are standing right there and the student is not doing anything wrong. I feel so sorry for her kids.

We have really enjoyed our childs time in the mandarin dual immersion program at Bergeson. The teachers are very caring and teach with high caliber. As with any immersion program, the pace is fast and homework load will be more than most traditional programs so it is not a program for everyone. My child is really enjoying learning Mandarin Chinese and has made great friends. What I love about the school is that there are 3 programs on campus - traditional English program, dual immersion chinese program and the autistic program. The kids get to play together at recess and are accepting of each other. We love the principal who always makes time out for every concern whether big or small. The campus itself needs a facelift as it is 30 years old. The parents at the school are all very friendly and involved in the different organizations on site. We love our experience at Bergeson!

Inconsistent. 1/3 of the teachers have been passionate about teaching and effective teachers. Some flat out didn't care about the students' learning. One teacher is notorious for playing movies in class but still there.

Principal is one of the worst I've seen. Inexperienced yet prideful. Looks only at the interest of himself and not the interest of students and teachers. Tries to avoid conflict by keeping critical information from parents instead of working through issues together.

1) Constant shuffling of teachers every year. Inconsistency for a language immersion program.
2) No accountability of teachers. Teachers do what they want. One teacher leaves campus as the bell rings most days, which means the teacher is out of the classroom before the bell rings.
3) Unaware of strengths and weaknesses of the teachers. Given he has no immersion background or even second language background, he is unaware to be the judge of the teacher's language abilities and what is needed for the English counterpart.
4) Does not listen to parents feedback. Issue #1,2,3 cannot be fixed.
5) Work orders for classrooms don't get fixed. One year, a/c was broken and unfixed through the hottest month. Principal was involved and gave the teacher a loud fan to cool the kids. But as soon as the parents complained to the district, a/c was magically fixed in a couple days.
6) Poor planning. Last minute scrambling for maternity leave coverage.
Same issue year after year but no change. But unwilling to admit and gives politician answers every year.

Great at teaching average students. Does not have support excelling students. No GATE program. There are some help for struggling students but inconsistent. Many teachers offer to tutoring service outside but you have to pay.

The only positive is dual language immersion program. Average to below average for basic academics (English, Science, Social Studies, Math). Sadly, we have to pour time and money to educate our above average children since school doesn't support their learning. But the worst is the principal.

We were excited to be part of the Mandarin Immersion Program, but the combination of inexperienced principal, no leadership, and lack of quality teachers has made it hard to want to stay at this school. This year, the 2nd grade teacher quit and the children have had over 15+ substitutes. Unbelievable but true. Be warned that some teachers are good and some are REALLY BAD. The administration is terrible, including the principal and the curriculum specialist. They have no idea how to deal with issues in a meaningful and effective way. They try to hide problems from both the parents and the district, and they only react to issues when they can no longer hide them. I agree with the other reviews below - the principal is a true politician, he gives lots of lip service but takes zero meaningful action. This year has been so bad that many families are not returning, or have decided to quit the program.

I love this school soooooooo much! My daughter is starting her third year here at Bergeson in the MIP program. I have been soooo amazed with how much Mandarin she has learned. We do not speak the language but she has pretty much able to translate what people are saying in Mandarin, write and converse. I'm so thankful for this gift of another language. The parent community is extremely tight and I don't think I have met one person i don't like here. My daughter has been bullied by a few girls but the principal and teacher helped in the situation. The MiP teachers are awesome but there was one that we had who was "typical Taiwan" teaching. She shamed my daughter and yelled at the kids a lot which I did not like. She learned quite a bit of Mandarin from her but I wished that she did it in a gentler way. The first year my daughter had her they would sing songs and my daughter loved her. The second year she seemed really nice to the parents but everything my daughter seemed to tell me about her was not good. My daughter went to school everyday afraid to come to school and of being bullied. Now she has the sweetest teacher in the world and has met a good group of friends.

There is no leadership at this school. Principal is a politician...all lip service and no action or follow up. The campus is dated but my concern is that it is dirty. Teaching quality is inconsistent within each grade and standards are not being enforced by the principal. I see teachers are just trying to get through each day with 35+ students in class (they spend more time on discipline vs. teaching). If you want your child to have a strong academic foundation, avoid this school.

We love Bergeson Elementary. Unfortunately, we have moved a lot and our children have had a hard time connecting and making friends at other schools. When we started at Bergeson 1 year ago, the teachers, office staff and principal are so friendly, helping and caring. It's refreshing and fabulous! I know that my children are under great supervision! At one of the old schools, there were always issues of bullying and children being mean to each other. We have had completely the opposite feeling at BERGESON. It starts at the top. The principal deals with behavior issues quickly, efficiently and always informs parents right away. I'm so impressed with this and I'm sure it's one of the reasons, along with great teachers, that children are so respectful of each other. We are thrilled to have landed in this great neighborhood school!!

I was excited about this school when we first moved into the district, however shortly after realizing how the school operates I was quickly disappointed. Our experience has been okay but not great. The teachers have been very hit and miss and the principal only works on issues with certain parents. She acts like she is concerned, but the follow up never happens. We are busy working parents so it's possible that since we can't donate a lot, or do volunteering we are not a priority. The office staff is EXTREMELY rude and when you walk in to the office, they don't even acknowledge that you are there, they just keep staring at the computers like you don't exist. Each time I go into the office I have to say, "HELLO!!!" or they will not help me! It's so frustrating and I dread when I need to pick my child up early or have a question or concern. There are a FEW excellent teachers there but for the most part this school is just okay. If you are a parent volunteer and have tons of money to donate it's likely that you will get the teachers you request and any help and follow up requested. It's unfortunate. We have a 3 yr. old that we plan on sending to a different school.

I transferred my son into this school and am so happy with my decision. The school has A LOT of community and parent support without being in your face about it (I was put off my another nearby school regarding this). I visited 3 schools, including my home school, and Bergeson was our first choice school. It has great teachers, supportive admin and great parents. The school also is able to have several programs funded by parent and community donations - science lab, music for the lower grades, teacher aides, AR program, and more. I am also a working parent and rely heavily upon the Y at this school site. I made sure to not only visit the schools I was interested in but also the Y programs. Again, Bergeson's Y program came out on top IMO. Regarding the Mandarin Immersion Program. I haven't seen or experienced any seclusion problems. We have chosen the traditional route for our kids and I am proud our school hosts the MIP. I think it's a fantastic program even though we went the traditional route. CUSD has many successful Spanish Immersion schools and given the track record, I do believe Bergeson will be able to serve both MIP and traditional students well.

After being at this school for 5 years I feel the Mandarin Immersion program has divided the school and will be looking for a different school for my younger daughter. The teachers and principal are amazing and have all been at the school for many years. It is going to be heartbreaking when the teachers lose their positions as the Immersion program is pretty much taking over the school

We recently moved to Laguna Niguel and are new to Bergeson. My son attended an excellent private Christian school before moving here and we were very hesitant on sending him to the local public school. I'm so thankful that we decided on Bergeson. It has been a wonderful transition. Bergeson strives for excellence. Bergeson families are so kind, friendly, caring and very outgoing. We adore our sons kindergarten teacher. I highly recommend this wonderful school.

I have children in the Mandarin Immersion Program and am very happy with their education. I am impressed with how quickly they are learning the language. The teachers are great and the parents are very involved. Because this is a school of choice program, every family that is in the Mandarin program is choosing to be there and wants to make the program successful. I just wish that this and all schools in Capo had better funding.

In Fall 2012, the Mandarin Immersion Program (http://www.friendsofmip.com) started at Bergeson. We took the leap, had our child enter the program, and are very happy with it. The level of commitment of the teachers, principal, and parents is outstanding. It is a lot of effort to initiate something like this -- but there is a real sense of shared commitment and involvement. Everyone including partner programs by the YMCA and others have been very supportive of the program and the children. It is unfortunate that the apparent quality of this school is not reflected in some aspects of the external appearance (which might deter some from considering this school). However, our experience with the people of Bergeson has been outstanding.

I have been racking my brain trying to decide what school to send my son to Kindergarten. We have looked into private schools which can be extremely costly. Which we have already started saving for his college. We live directly across the street from Bergeson and after researching Local schools I was pleasantly surprised to find that Laguna Niguel's Marian Bergeson Elementary School is among the few public elementary schools in California to receive a distinguished GreatSchools Critera Evaluation Rating of 8 out of 10. Also scored 891 out of 1000 For The Academic Performance Index (API) system is based on year-over-year test score performance through a two-year cycle for The Base score is for the first year and the Growth score is for the second year for 2011-2012. The only complaint I hear is the gridlock traffic getting in to pick-up your child -- but I can walk!! - So I'm excited to enroll my son next year!
