There is a lot of bullying among the students and some of the teacher are nice while others just be mean for no absolute reason at all. If you are in honors , especially in 8th grade the teachers get meaner and care about the smallest things more. At least in 7th grade the teachers understand you a more and are more friendly towards you.

Horrible school not sending my kids here. Teachers are a bunch of bullies.
Really detention for having an untucked shirt that my son couldn't even see because it was behind him for a couple of minutes it was untucked.
All of these advisors are a bunch of stuck up losers that lash out at students.

The school is good if your in honors. I'm a full honors student and my teachers are the best well most of them but you get the point, but for no honors it isn't. I hear most of the teachers are mean in all subjects and always yell and stuff. Most of the advisors are very mean and I dislike them. They are good to ask questions to them online but in real life they are completely mean. Go to this school if you have honors. Also bullying, I wish the school would help kids like me with bullying because all of us get called racial slurs 8/5; 8 hours every 5 days. Everywhere I go I either hear a racial slur or just something racist. Besides that the school is pretty good!

From the first day of enrollment, the staff has been amazing and so helpful, my daughter says she really does not see bullying at all just by 1 individual. They have treated my daughter and my family like we have been a part of the coyote family for a long time. I would recommend this in a heartbeat beat, and my daughter is super happy there.

Terrible experience. Constant bullying by students and staff. The teachers dont care if they belittle you while trying to discipline you. And if youre not a family they are familiar with, you get treated like an outsider. They have their favorites and those kids get away everything, including breaking dress code. Multiple families complained about the school and still nothing has been done to address the bullying and race issues that clearly exist.

Based on my experience, I would highly advise against enrolling in El Rancho Charter School. The prevalence of bullying in the school is alarmingly high and unfortunately, the school's leadership seems to have little regard for addressing this issue. Despite my repeated efforts to communicate with them about the bullying incidents, no tangible action has been taken to resolve the situation.
There appears to be a group of employees at the school who display a sense of entitlement and superiority. They are using class time to sell candies, which disrupts the learning process and has a negative impact on the student's academic performance.
It has been observed that some teachers tend to engage in non-academic conversations during class time. These discussions are often unrelated to school and learning. If a student happens to accidentally glance at them while they are talking, the teachers may respond with a fierce and threatening look. This is not an exaggeration and has been reported by students and parents alike.

Great middle school with many elective classes, diverse student body, and honors placement for English, Math, Science, and History. Beautiful campus has large sports field and state-of-the art Gym and Science Center. School offers tutoring, homework club, and math academy. My child has thrived socially and academically.

This school has a wide array of elective classes, which has been great, and we've had mixed experiences as far as teachers go--some are great and some are not. We originally applied to the musical theater program at this school and were very excited that our child got in. Last year (2020) was difficult because of the pandemic, of course, and we were online almost the entire year. This year the musical theater program was turned over to a different teacher and it's been a complete disappointing mess. We were given information about clothing the students needed to have, and then had the school tell us the kids weren't allowed to wear the clothing we already bought because it wasn't part of the uniform. The teacher was pulling kids out of their third period classes to paint sets for their musical production, until the school put a stop to that. This teacher seems to be putting the students solely in charge of things (like the playbill for the musical), and then not following up to make sure it gets done (MANY of the performers had their photos missing in the playbill). The kids seem to be running the "Into the Woods" musical and the year-end showcase with very little oversight from their teacher, which is not the experience our student thought she'd be getting. It's too bad that this year has essentially been a loss in terms of the musical theater program that was once thriving. Other than that, I feel like this school has been a generally positive experience for our student, but we're glad to be moving on to Canyon after 2 years at El Rancho.

At El Rancho Charter School, there are a wide variety of classes for you and your child to choose from. The campus is also really nice, as well! However, I recently have noticed that my child has been very stressed out! For the past two weeks, she's had 2-3 projects due in one week. There also appears to be plenty of pressure for students to do well at this school.

Our family loves El Rancho! My kids have grown academically, socially and gained independence. The broad range of academic opportunities as well as elective and leadership opportunities have allowed them to develop new interests and gain confidence in their academic knowledge and abilities. El Rancho also provides extensive support to students with special needs, both academically and emotionally. We highly recommend El Rancho.

This school is not that good. The education system is fine, I suppose, but some of the teachers and community make it so hard to try to find something to like about this school. I am a person of color and have been scared to face RACIST comments because of the people around me. There's so many entitled students at this school who think racism is okay and is straight up being racist in front of teachers. I've seen a kid who has faced this racism report it to a teacher, but the teacher seemed to do nothing. Another thing, I was told that I did not fit the standards of an honors student after I got a bad grade on a test (and in this class, I usually get B's). Another teacher has bad anger issues, and gets mad at students for asking questions. Yes, he puts the hints in a video, but it's hard to understand when the video is all we have. Also, I was there during an assembly talking about anti-bullying, yet the students still didn't get the message. I found the right friends after a few weeks of trying to look for actually nice people, which I am grateful for them :). 80% of the bad things aside, a good thing about this school is the events which make the school a little better to look forward to.

The best, well-rounded education experience for my children was at El Rancho Charter School! El Rancho prepared them for a successful and high-achieving high school experience through to the 4-year university level. They actually have their best recollection of their middle school teachers. The El Rancho elective opportunities and dynamic teachers are unmatched.

While the school has positive attributes, we cannot recommend this school. Some of the teachers and the administration feel compelled to indoctrinate the children to their beliefs. We mentioned this to Mrs. Walker once, but nothing changed. Most of the teachers and staff care about the children and do their job well, but some appear to have an agenda that has no place in school. If you're in a position to do so, consider sending your children to private school. We regret not doing this.
Posted: August 21, 2020
Starts from the top...if the admins are bullies, then how can they effectively run an academic institution that doesn't promote this kind of culture. I sense they "bully" their teaching staff too and having a "voice" is not welcomed.
Posted: August 21, 2020
Terrible administration at this school. Academic advisors do not work with students to encourage their success. They act as if they know your child better than you do and dictate their success or failure at their whim with NO collaborative consultation or consideration. They act as the end all and be all and feel they have free reign because of their charter status. Clear abuse of power.

Posted: August 21, 2020
As some of the other reviews state, admin is very cold and very dismissive and VERY unapproachable. They are close-minded and not good partners to parents or students.
Posted: August 21, 2020
Not at all - they love to categorize what they deem as "smart" and "dumb" students. They pride themselves on promoting systemic academic discrimination.

My son is in 8th grade and has the best teachers I have ever come across. Even his P.E. teacher inspires him in all areas. My son is very smart, but has never liked school until he got to El Rancho. All teachers have been effective, most are exceptional. It has been an academic game changer for him.

The school tries very hard. Teachers are very present and hold the children accountable. Poor behavior is not tolerated.

Mr. A is not my sons advisor but has taken his time repeatedly to make sure things are going well for him. Mr. Kilgore is my sons advisor and I can tell he respects and believes in my son and is very invested. Mrs. Beard did an exceptional job transitioning my son from an IEP to a 504 plan and they are recognize the needs of twice exceptional students. It has been a breath of fresh air.

Completely mixed. As noted, the academic teachers are absolutely amazing. Phenomenally good math and science teachers. Superb history teachers. We honestly, could find none better! Absolutely deplorable band and choir teachers. Just the worst. We almost could not get our child to continue music into high school.

The school is academically strong, with a large selection of electives, which is great. However, the administration and staff are cold and detached. Whenever I need help or have legitimate questions, their answers are curt and cold. They always seem to be in a rush and impatient. Instead of making me feel comfortable and welcomed, I end up feeling like I am imposing or wasting their time.
The school lacks warmth and flexibility. It is run too much like a large, impersonal institution. I am considering pulling my son out next year.

My wife and I have done research with this school. We like lots of things about this school. Academically they seems to do very well and they offer lots of elective classes and they have various after school sport program which we like. After reading the review on the great school website, we noticed that they got of great reviews for the academic programs and elective program and they got high reviews of teachers, but we also notice there was a pattern of complains about an administrative staff. Today when we took our son to take a placement test, we experience similar treatment from this particular administrative person who was conducting the test during the first half. She was rude, dismissive, unwelcoming to us and to all others that we witness. Now we have second thought about enrolling our kid in this school. It is very unfortunate that many teachers and staff works so hard to build this school reputation and it may takes only one person to leave a bad impression and feeling about this school. This rating is based solely on our experience with this administrative staff. We assume that all other teachers and staff are great as mentioned by other reviewer.

El Rancho has to be the most incredible school I have ever had my children attend!! I could not be more impressed with the administration, the staff, the teachers and the other students at this school!! So incredible, so smart, so generous!!! Truly impressed, and truly blessed to have had my children attend this phenomenal institution!!! If the high school was run the way El Rancho is run, I would not have sent my kids to private high school!!

The administration at this school is extremely dismissive to both the students and parents. A Vice Pincipal fails to return calls in a timely manner, if at all and they never followed through on a complaint of a teacher throwing an object at my child. Office staff is very unprofessional, rude and unwelcoming. They have some good teacher's but the bad out weighs the good. The OCUSD needs to do a serious evaluation on the behavior of this school administrtion.

Our younger daughter recently decided to attend El Rancho Middle School. It was a decision she made during the summer after interacting with kids from the school at various local community events and learning about the exciting academic and music programs the school offers. We waited till the school got back from break and visited the school office first thing. The staff was cordial and very accommodating. The registrar signed us up for the Math Algebra Readiness test next morning and picked up the phone and called our old school to get the records transferred. Even though this was such a last minute move for us, our daughter got all the classes she wanted. We volunteered the day of Registration and she even got to meet the Principal while waiting in line to get her picture taken - that was the highlight of her day. The Administrators and Counselors are amazing and have an open door policy. Kudos to El Rancho for providing an exceptional academic environment for our kids.

We visited the school two years ago upon moving to CA to register our 8th grader, and decided against it because of the treatment we received from the school's registrar. But living in the area and knowing the kids, we decided to give it another try for our younger child, and we got the same treatment from the same employee. The registrar at El Rancho is curt and dismissive and her demeanor reads, "you are not welcomed here." This time she refused to give me a registration packet because it was her last one. The school's website declares: '"At El Rancho Charter School, we are always looking at ways to improve. Our charter status gives us the ability to think outside the box . I would strongly encourage the Orange Superintendent to investigate this employee and consider this review and TAKE ACTION TO IMPROVE THIS SCHOOL BY REMOVING THE FIRST PERSON A NEW STUDENT AND PARENT ENCOUNTERS UPON NEEDING TO ENROLL. WE PAY TAXES HERE AND SHOULD NOT BE TREATED THIS WAY. Her manner is blatantly appalling and we are in disbelief that the Orange Unified School District would be accepting of such behavior, especially, in an educational environment.
