This school is situated in an upscale neighborhood, which creates an appealing environment. However, most students do not reside in Coronado, and there are ongoing concerns regarding student behavior, including daily instances of drug use in restrooms. Additionally, the school has faced disciplinary actions, such as being banned from Disneyland for senior students due to inappropriate conduct. Bullying remains a significant issue within the school community, and unfortunately, staff members often provide limited support to students and parents. Instead of offering constructive assistance, there is a tendency to place blame on students, despite the expectation that staff should be proactive in monitoring and addressing these concerns.

We are here for the 4x4 Academics. The teachers are better than we expected. My highly academic kid gets all the advance classes and dual enrollmets she wants with no issues with scheduling nor holding her back due to her young age. They have amazing counselors. The teachers go out of their way to make sure your kid excels on their AP exams. PSATs are given each yr so kids are really prepared. The sports are mostly Division 1 and 2.

Social issues listed in other reviews are real. Cyber Bullying is still happening. There is an Off-island vs On-island bias between students. Mean, cliquey kids spend all their conversations creating and sharing gossip about others is real. When parents are confronted about their childs bully behavior they blame others and not their kid. Navigating this hostile environment with your kid is hard but the best way we found to get out of it is to get to the highest level courses possible and find the kids that are more interested in their own futures. Low academic kids tend to also have low character. We've met rich kids who are kind and poor kids who are mean and vice versa. There isnt a correlation between wealth and good character. We plan on sticking it out here but wouldnt recommend this school unless its convenient for pick up and drop offs and your kid is highly academic and can tune out the social drama.

We have been a part of this district for 6 years and we appreciate the dedication and passion of everyone that works in and for our Schools. We are a strong knitt community and still have that "small town feel" that is sometimes lost in other schools.
Academically, I have a daughter that had struggled in math in middle school, and she regain her confidence and is doing great thanks to the "support math" class available as an elective.
I would strongly recommend this school.

This was not a good fit for our child, who has lived and attended Coronado schools since kindergarten. The elementary and middle school experience was great. Once at the high school, bullying became intense and partying/drinking is the norm. The school is cliquey and there are online social media accounts used to bully other students. The focus is on being "cool" rather than being kind and inclusive. Drinking and drugs are mainstream and parties are hosted with approval of parents who often supply alcohol. The dating situation is unusual; committed relationships are frowned upon while "hookup" culture is accepted. Academically the school is fine; it is a four by four schedule so students/families should be prepared for that shift if they haven't experienced it before. Coronado can be a great place to live but for high school we have switched our student to a private high school.

As it is with any school, the amount of homework given is completely dependent on the teachers. Some days my student would be packed with an essay and two tests and others she would have an easy schedule. My student took a few AP classes while she was there, and they tended to have more homework than the ones that were not AP, again as expected. She was able to manage it well and many of the teachers are understanding of missed deadlines with a legitimate excuse.

My student claimed that there was a cheating problem with other students. Many would look up the answers on their phones during exams.

My student had excellent teachers who really pushed her to succeed. She enjoyed going to most of her classes because they were engaging.

My daughter went here for her junior year of high school. We are a Navy family, so she's used to making new friends everywhere she goes, and has never had a problem with it. That is, until she joined the Coronado High School "community." The first week at school, the local kids were cold and cruel. She would come home crying, and she is a tough girl. My husband and I thought that it would progressively get better as the year continued, but it never did. We then found out that there were webpages created, such as CHS Confessions page, which was taken down, to bully fellow students. In one of her classes, she would be left alone to work on partner work, making it so that she would have to work with the teacher. She only did one year there, and if she stayed, she would probably have chosen to be homeschooled for her senior year. If you are moving to the San Diego area, I would recommend a totally different school. One thing we did find is that she had great teachers.

It does somewhat depend on the class. Most are just right, some are occasionally too much.

Great programs, great principal, fantastic teachers and a variety of opportunities. My daughter is thriving at this school socially, emotionally and intellectually.

There are some amazing teachers, and some not-so-dedicated teachers, just like at any school. My child also has to deal with the strong bias among students regarding anyone new or less affluent. While the Coronado HS has some wonderful opportunities in sports and academics, it can be a very tough place to fit in.

Coronado is a great school overall. It is well rounded in that the academics have several different levels that push everyone to be better, great sports, and excellent arts programs. Our arts school, CoSA is top rated and the ceramics program is just about state of the art. The teachers take a different approach to learning than many other schools I've heard of. They will flat out tell you if they are just teaching so,etching because it is required and will discuss just about anything with you. The teachers are easy to trust and, though slightly insane, really do care about their students. The biggest problem is the divide between the sports players, ROTC kids, and the CoSA kids.
