I’m not sure why we are still talking about these issues in 2023 but this schools is not only overrated but mistreated my kids were in fact bi racial with Latino and African American but absolutely not ok and wanted everyone to know what really goes on in this school.. first of all my daughter has GI issues with constant to the restroom and nurses office for her stomach issues, but my daughter came home one day, last year and said her teacher would not send my daughter to the nurse anymore because the “nurse was busy with other kids not for her .. no time for her, which tells you something.. I know also in previous years my oldest son was also mis- accused for an expulsion, while another child who was guilty got a slap on the wrist and let go because his dad was a cop… but I am a mother and will not stand or sit in silence especially after my kids are continually mistreated by these schools.. j letting u know..

Great school
Teachers and principal Hines is the best addition ever

Posted: April 24, 2018

I do not see a lot of bullying at this school, the administration is all over it.

Posted: April 24, 2018

Homework is clear and teachers do a good job of communicating expectations

Posted: April 24, 2018

I have had two kids at this school for 5 years and I can say that all of the teachers have been good

Posted: April 24, 2018

Yes, they focus strongly on character throughout the grades and it shows.

Posted: April 24, 2018

The new principal Mr. Hines is outstanding! He brings such an amazing level of energy and engagement to everything he does. As other reviews have said he sets a great tone for the kids and the teachers. Very inspiring!

Great experience, highly recommend it. Both a good academic and social foundation for your children.

Excellent. There have been many changes at the school since many of the reviews were written. 1) new leadership. I was not here under the old principal, but I’ve been told it’s night and day. Current principal is invloved and very effective. Kids love him and he knows almost every one of the 700 kids names. He’s in the classrooms constantly and out on the campus. 2) The bathrooms (eyeroll). The school got new bathrooms. If bathrooms are your biggest issue at school, there’s really not issues. Teach your children to be tidy when using the bathrooms and we won’t have problems. 3) teachers are great. If you don’t think so, I urge you to help out in the classroom. Watch what they do and how much they do for the kids. There are solid, experienced teachers at this school. I see teacher’s adjust lessons for kids’ needs whether they are higher or lower performing students. We moved into district and my daughter flourished here. She scored high on standardized test and is now in advanced classes at middle school. She was always appropriately challenged in her classes and her teachers had high expectations. I’m was and am very pleased with AOE.

We have only attended kindergarten here so far. And talking to most moms, there are a lot that are not happy with the teachers and the school. The teachers don't seem very happy themselves. The bathrooms are bad like another commenter mentioned, I've seen some and I've heard the older kids complain. Luckily so far the Kindergarten has their own bathrooms, but its soon to become and issue for us. They can't teach kids with learning differences, its a real issue. If your child is above average intelligence or below you will struggle here. I'm sad and disappointed that its not working out and I need to go find another school somewhere.

I have two points about this school.

1. The bathrooms are the most filthy bathrooms I have ever seen at a school. This is an elementary school where our young children have to spend most of their day. The bathrooms are disgusting, full of mud all over the floor as well as the sinks, toilets that don't work or are stuffed up, paper towel dispensers that don't work. It's no wonder that the children do not want to use the restrooms, we know several of them that hold it all day long just so they don't have to use the bathrooms. This is completely unhealthy!

2. This school is terrible to children with IEPs/504. None of the staff is properly trained. I had a terrible time getting support for my son and the school repeatedly targeted my son just because of his mental illness. The principal has gone as far as to make inappropriate comments to me. His teacher didn't bother asking my son to do work, just had him sit in class with a book while she instructed the rest of the class. These people are supposed to be educators to help teach and inspire our children.

Be aware if you are just moving to this area or live here and are considering AOE. This school is a disgrace.

The teachers are very competent and work with students to help them improve. I go to the open house and parent/teacher meetings and discussed my children's progress with the teachers who were very helpful.

Posted: June 6, 2016

Several teachers give out homework that is due on a Monday right after a holiday weekend!! This is simply wrong and not respectful of family time.

Posted: June 6, 2016

They have a "value of the week" where they emphasize certain qualities like truthfulness, fairness, etc.

Posted: June 6, 2016

The teacher/student ratio is good, they have a strong PTA, it's rated as a CA Distinguished School, parent involvement/volunteerism is very high and kids score highly on the CA Standardized Tests. My kids speak highly of their teachers and enjoy going to class. I highly recommend this middle school for any parents thinking of moving into the area. Aviara Oaks Middle School (AOMS) is part of the Carlsbad Unified School District, in Carlsbad, CA. Thank You!!

We relocated from India last year. And the school environment is so great that my son took hardly any time to adjust to this place. He is very good in English and Math for KG stardard.

This school is very professional! I love the communication in regards to my sons progress.

My daughter went here for Elementary and Middle school. I love this school, my son is now here and is doing great! He's in first grade! Has a wonderful teacher!

I like AOE. There is a lot of parent & PTA involvement. Classes are large, almost everywhere, for public schools. A bit of a learning curve implementing common core but I suspect that in most public schools. We came from a GATE school where the only other work was mostly an extra worksheet. Admittingly, I am a parent who will ask what my kids have for home work and other projects coming up. If I think they need to apply themselves more, I'll suggest it. These days, I really don't believe you can leave it 100% to the teacher. I can give or take the principal. It is a pretty campus, beyond the new security gates. I like the fact that the school has updated security measures.

School facilities are a disgrace. Bathrooms are filthy and students do not want to use them. Principal is terrible! She thinks making students sit in her office until they cry and confess their "crime" is an effective way to teach the students about discipline. GATE program's only function is to send a letter announcing that student is in GATE program -- great! but there is no GATE program! No additional activities, no additional attention etc. If having a GATE program is a requirement of the district or state, this school deserves less than an F Some teachers who are approaching retirement should retire NOW rather than wait till they get their years in -- they are not inspiring students nor, in some cases even teaching. If this is one of the best schools in the area, I would advise moving to a different area or attending private school. AOE was a big disappointment to both of my children. AOM is worse.

Our daughter attended AOE for 3 years. -There is a great PTA which basically carries this school -The current principal is making decisions which will cause this school's quality to decline(academic focus, environment, and teacher support) -There are some good teachers and some not very good -The recent security updates make it feel like a prison -Over 30 kids per teacher currently Needless to say I am disappointed.

Please do not move to Carlsbad if you think the schools are better.....do not waste your money, paying Mello Roos (which most of us do) gets you nothing. AOM, Pacific Rim (which is supposed to be the best in the district), Poinsettia, any school here, is a minimal education at best. If your child struggles good luck getting help unless you are literally failing, if your child is GATE identified, well there is no GATE program and NO differentiated work for those who are GATE identified. So save your money for private school if you move here, or just do not move here, at least for the schools. My son did love band and orchestra, but that was not enough to keep us there, we did move onto greener pastures outside of CUSD. I have to give it one star but as you can tell I would give it zero!

This school has great parents and teachers working together but there are too many kids!!! There are 6 kinder teachers. My daughter feels overwhelmed here and will be going to a different Carlsbad school this fall. The zoning of this school needs to be redone and there should not be students going here that don't live in the neighborhood. It's not fair to aviara.

I am a college professor and both of my kids have gone to this school, my daughter is in 4th grade now. It is the best, I really cant think of anything that could improve it. The principle, teachers and staff are really helpful and do a fantastic job. I think this is one of the best in the city of san diego.....really, you cant go wrong here. Just go visit the campus, you will see quickly what the vibe is like, its really nice. The principle is awesome, you basically can just walk into her office at anytime, she really helped my daughter out a few times. Way above and beyond there normal job. I feel lucky to have my kids there.
