This school has changed in recent years with the new principal. There’s been a lot of teacher turnover and the quality of education and learning environment have declined based on comparative experience between my kids. I also question the safety of children based on some recent incidents on campus.

This is a gold standard school for public education. Highly engaged families (PTA is extremely active), a fantastic new principal (welcome, Principal Kay!), and staff who stay for decades and really care for kids. The academic rigor is appropriate across all grades and students leave 6th grade prepared and ready to succeed. There are some problems in EUSD with regard to low rigor and a high politicization of certain social issues; at this point (2025), OPE has maintained itself as a school that is focused on student success and stays above the nonsense. I hope it will stay that way!

Alot of this info is false. The average classroom size is 30+ kids. Its stack and pack. I found some good teachers and alot of below average ones. Dr. Cameron does not pay attention to what the teachers are teaching in the classroom. Dr. Cameron does not respond to your emails. Alot of lip service and talk, but action is slow or nonexistent when there is a problem. Should you have a special needs child, Dr. Cameron will treat them as second citizens. They are not a priority and she likes to keep them in the basement. Its a politically correct environment and 60% of the teachers will bring their politics into the classroom and disguise their politics in the form of writing assignments and books they read to the children without informing the parents. The teachers are not transparent about what they are teaching and provide a very vague syllabus of what they are teaching your kids. Alot of what they teach is hardcore social issues that are not age appropriate for elementary school kids.

If you happen to move into the school boundaries after January (for the next school year) when their enrollment is, they put you on a waitlist for OPE despite living in the boundaries. They place you into another school and if at some a space becomes available you can go to your neighborhood school. We moved into the boundaries in June and no spot became available when school started in the fall. This is for just one child. We are left with the logistics of going to another school in the district and with the emotional upheavel of moving child after school starts. I’m not sure how many people moving into the district are able to register mid school year for the next school year...

The principal has a Ph.D. in finance and it shows. She clearly makes the most efficient use of the money she has and motivates parents to donate the funds they need for enrichment. I've been very impressed. We were strongly considering a private school but the experience so far has been so good I can't think of a good reason why, at least for elementary school.

Our son had sort of a "meh" relationship with school all though preschool. We were very concerned about how he would feel about Kindergarten, especially when he was assigned a very young teacher. To our delight, he has blossomed at OPE and literally runs to school every morning. He knows all his letters (we've been working on that already) and even some sight words. It's been dramatic progress in just the past few months, and we know Ms Underwood has a lot to do with that.

We have been so impressed with our experience at OPE so far. The teachers and the level of enrichment available have been first class. I was quite sure before we toured OPE we would send our son to a private school: I wanted him to have the best educational experience possible and really love school and learning in general. As soon as we toured the school and learned about their integrated disciplines and hypothesis-based learning they employ, we quickly moved OPE to the top of our list and we haven't looked back. Our son went from being just so-so on school to literally running to get there every day. He can't wait to learn, and the school has many enrichment programs both as part of their curriculum and available as integrated after school programs. (Way better than when I was a kid!)
As a woman in the business world, I also appreciate the gifts Dr. Cameron the principal brings of financial rigor and stewardship combined with a kind love of the kids. It's a powerful combination.
So far it's an A+ from us!

We have had an excellent experience with OPE. We feel very fortunate to have attended such a top notch school. My children have thrived at this school and have been well prepared for middle/high school and have continued to thrive as a result of the great foundation they received at OPE. I agree with other posts that Dr. Cameron is an amazing leader, and that students and families are welcoming and kind.

OPE strives to teach organization and routine homework skills starting at a very young age (1st grade). Homework increases each year. Students are given planners beginning in the 3rd grade (or take daily photos using iPads of the homework boards), and are held accountable for their work. Parents are encouraged not to "hover" and children are taught to be accountable for their work, so that by the end of 6th grade they are well prepared for the rigors of middle school. Support classes such as after school homework club/buddy programs are offered for those who need some additional assistance. Teachers also make themselves available for additional assistance.

We have always felt that teachers at this school take a personal interest in the development of their students and are very responsive. We have had an exceptional experience with all of our children's teachers (more than 20 different teachers / multiple children over many years).

Messaging from the school is excellent. My experience has been that problems, when they do arise, are more as a result of these types of characters not being emphasized or valued enough in the home. When the two work in tandem, the result is very positive.

Teachers and administration/support staff have always been responsive and supportive. Principal Dr. Beth Cameron is amazing. She is not swayed by pushy opinionated parents. Dr Cameron takes the time to thoughtfully and objectively listen to all sides, before coming to conclusions and solutions to the issues the school and students face. We have always felt that the teachers and support staff have taken a genuine interest in the well being of our children. I have had multiple students attend this school - both main stream and utilizing the special education offerings. I have been amazed by the level of support provided and could not have had a better experience on all fronts.

We have always felt that this school does an excellent job of diversifying learning experiences within its programs. The school's foundation also supports several additional support teachers in math, reading, and science. Diversification is available for both advanced learners and children requiring extra assistance. Academic support through formal special education programs is also readily available to students who qualify.

The school's Principal Dr. Beth Cameron and all teachers take bullying very seriously. This type of behavior is not tolerated. The school administration does an excellent job of conducting thorough investigations of all reported incidences in order to properly handle situations that arise.

If you want your child to thrive, OPE is the place! The school is full of amazing teachers, Dr. Cameron is an incredible leader, and the children and families are welcoming and kind. Our two children absolutely love school. We could not be happier. Our 1st grader is reading at a 5th grade level and already learning computer skills we were taught in Jr. High. OPE has caring parents that give generously so the students can have art, music, science, and many more enrichment courses other schools simply do not offer. OPE is top notch!

Inclusion is important at OPE. Dr. Cameron, the teachers, and Mrs. Johnson are great leaders. The students at OPE are kind, caring, and inclusive to everyone.

Teasing, name calling, and/or being mean is simply not acceptable at OPE. The teachers and Principal make this well known. If you enter OPE you will see students laughing, having fun, and learning. This is a great school that actually practices inclusion.

Way too much. I think the "district policy" is an hour and 1/2 in 6th grade, which is terrible and goes against all research. Kids are stressed out

They pit the students against each other. While constantly preaching a "no bullying" policy, they pit the students and classes against each other to raise the most money, using peer pressure. Terrible lesson! They also don't do anything positive to nurture the community, just constantly tell the kids "Don't do this, don't do that" Its a very negative environment, very institutional

This school has been run into the ground in past few years by lack of leadership, which caters to certain parents and ignores the kids. The leadership style is negative and critical; there is more communication about the state tests and asking for $ than anything else. Not one kid is excited about the "community" of the school. They want $$/per child from each parent and no input or oversight. Many of the programs have been left to rot (garden, etc). There are some fantastic teachers, that is the only reason for any stars. Many of the parents have a "whatever I need to do for my child" attitude, rather than a sense of doing what's best for the school and community. Many many people have left, enrollment is way down. I have been at schools with leadership both good and bad- this is bad and bringing down the school.

The teachers and the staff are great and the education is first-rate. However, I am docking two stars from my rating because according to NBC news today -- Olivenhein Pioneer Elementary School has the second highest percentage of unvaccinated students in San Diego County. According to NBC News 17% of students are not vaccinated due to medical or personal beliefs.

My child has enjoyed both very good and less than stellar years at OPE. If your child is placed with a dedicated teacher, then he/she will learn and grow. If not, you're out of luck. Also, there is way too much homework, so much so that my child does nothing else after a day of an extracurricular activity. I have not had a good experience with the Principal. She does not want to hear what she does not agree with. On the other hand, parental involvement and parental financial contributions are outstanding.

Agree with the prior more recent reviews. Excellent school for the most part but definitely caters to certain parents - interesting how the children of those parents always get the best teachers. Too much homework and not impressed at all with the principal. She was not willing to work with me as a parent and non-responsive to the needs of my child.

Excellent school! The teachers care, and our kids have learned a lot. My ONLY problem is that there is too much homework. My older child often doesn't have time for anything else after school. I still gave 5 stars because I think all California schools might be like this (my nephews have same issue in LA). Otherwise great school. Organized, nice facilities, and fantastic programs.

We love OPE. Our daughter is happy and learning a lot. The teachers have been wonderful and the principal is focused on many important issues that affect our children and schools. We moved to Encinitas for the schools and we have been more than pleased.

Excellent school overall- except for the new principal. A lot of homework, we do not have time to get it all done and go to outside sports. My kids are up until late at night finishing work after sports. Good teachers for the most part, however, we are NOT impressed with the new principal, she is very political and caters only to certain parents. Classes are not mixed in a balanced way- we see this year after year there. They would do so much better drawing names out of a hat than the unfair way they place students currently.

Our kids have recently started their second year at O.P.E. and we are very happy to be at this school. The faculty collaborates with parents to try to resolve your special requests or concerns. The teachers we have had are all above par, and love teaching. It shows in the dedication to their students and their relationships with the children. The Principal is new, and she has proved herself over the past year. Olivenhain Pioneer enjoys very strong community support and a high degree of parent involvement, which creates a strong sense of community for our children. All the families we have met are open and welcoming.

This school has many positive aspects however much has been overrated. The test scores have much to do with the parent support children get at home both directly from the parent and often through tutors that they hire. The homework load is beyond what is necessary leaving little time for recreational activities. OPE had a great principal over the last few years unfortunately left over the summer. While there are some good teachers many make the absolute minimum effort. A strong emphasis on kids being organized seems to take precedence over reasoning and knowledge. The school as a whole enjoys strong parental support and parents. Parents are asked to contribute far more money than other Encinitas schools. It is a shame that given that there is little evidence to suggest that the content and methodologies employed within the classroom in anyway match up to this.

Reading reviews online can be somewhat misleading due to the individual motivations and circumstances of each parent writing a review. I have had children at OPE for years and have found teachers and administrators to be very responsive to any concerns or questions my children or I have had. Bullying is taken very seriously at OPE and there has been a great deal of communication and education with the children and staff about its harmful effects. I would highly recommend calling the school office and scheduling time to meet the principal and tour the school before making a decision based on one person's experience.

Not a day goes by that I don't thank God that my kids are out of this school. I am grateful to the kid who beat up my kid who beat up my kid right in front of the principal while she stood next to me and laughed insisting they were playing. My son was clear that they were not. I pulled all 3 of my kids out of the school because of the constant bullying and disrespectful attitudes of the students and parents. I declined buying a beautiful house in the area because I didn't want my kids to be anywhere near the kids who beat them up. It's a big impersonal school where the teachers don't seemed too concerned about the individual student. If they don't do their homework or tuen it in, the teachers don't let yhe parents know.Too big for it's britches. Mediocre but likes to blow it's own horn. My kids are in better schools now, so I am grateful to the kids who beat them up or I never would have known how many better schools there are.

My niece and nephew attend this school and I am highly impressed with the quality education they receive at this school. It's a right balance of education mixed with strong family participation and fun. My niece and nephew are constantly showing me their homework and artwork they do during the shool year, and their recent 'Grandparents Day' was a hit both for the kids and the Grandparents. Reminds me of the Elementary School my brother and I attended back in Maryland. The kids will never forget their Elementary school experience.
