We absolutely love Riverview International Academy! I have one child who is now in middle school, two currently enrolled, and one about to start kindergarten. We chose to pursue the Mandarin Immersion Program for several reasons. One, Mandarin is the number 1 spoken language in the world and an international language of business. No matter what field they go into, they will stand out amongst their peers if they are fluent in Mandarin! Secondly, studying Mandarin, a character based language, along with English, activates both sides of their brains, stimulating their learning and brain development. Our children are thriving in this program and we absolutely love the community we have built.

One of my children has an IEP for dyslexia and I have been very pleased with the work our teachers have done to accommodate his learning needs. He has received excellent support from teachers, support staff, and administration. Two of our children are advanced learners and I feel the school has done a great job making sure they are challenged in their learning and able to grow individually. I cannot recommend this school enough!

Amazing school! I researched a lot before decided on a school for my kids (we live in a different district) and chose this school for their Mandarin program. I have two kids in 1st & 5th grade mandarin immersion program. They learned so much at school and the teachers are so great! They also have cultural experience, performance during Lunar New Year festival, International Fair, etc. My kids now can understand, write and speak in Mandarin! Learning a second language from a free public school is a very rare opportunity here in San Diego. Not a lot of schools offer this. They also have Spanish immersion program. I recommend this school!

I have two children in this stellar program! Both my children speak, read and write fluent Mandarin and are in 7th and 3rd grade. The teachers are brilliant and kind. They truly care about your children, get to know them individually and get to know their families. The support staff at all of the schools are are excellent. It is so comforting knowing the same children and parents that your kids will go to school with for 13 years. You get to develop tight relationships with everybody and you just become one big family!

We are a non-speaking mandarin household. After taking a tour of the campus and seeing all the students fluently speak and write mandarin, I was blown away! All of the mandarin teachers have the biggest hearts for our students. They are very active in the community and opportunity for the students to perform through song and dance at various events outside of school. Not only the teachers and staff are stellar, but also the parent support is phenomenal. I have only amazing things to say about this school! If you were looking into a language immersion program, without a doubt I would check out Winter Gardens / Riverview International Academy Mandarin & Spanish Program.

I have 2 kids in the Mandarin program and they are doing great! I am not a Mandarin speaker and I love that my kids are learning a 2nd language. I would recommend this program for everybody, the Mandarin teachers are great!

Both my children have been attending this language immersion school. I really love that this is a local public school, exclusively offering 2 language programs (Mandarin and Spanish). The cultural enrichment and experiences are phenomenal. My children are above average academically. They also get to engage in the community by performing at many of San Diego's cultural events. My kids are in the Mandarin program and are always learning songs, and cultural arts. My son even learned how to play the Chinese yo-yo! This school is truly a special community. I love that the class size are small and there's many school events to promote family engagement and connection.

I have two Grands at this school and also Volunteer in the classroom. I am so impressed at how the girls are learning mandarin from K up. Our 3rd grader can carry on a basic conversation in mandarin and understands even more. The teachers are compassionate, and innovative in how they teach. I speak very highly of this school, both Riverview campus and Winter Garden PK-1st grade campus. I was doubtful when our daughter enrolled them, but quickly changed my mind. Best decision ever. Not only are they expanding their own English language, learning Math, Science but also in Mandarin. Plus they learn the culture & traditions of the Chinese people. Which in turn reflects their acceptance of all cultures.

Both of my kids are attending this school. (3rd grade and kindergarten). They love their teachers, Im happy with the progress. Kids love the school. Learning mandarin is an amazing challenge for the kids.

We absolutely love this school and feel so fortunate to have found this community! I have a child who has gone through the Mandarin program and is in middle school and kids who are still in it. It's amazing the amount of work these teachers put in to their students. Our children are in Mandarin for half the day and English the other half. They are learning to read, write, and speak in both languages with great success.

The school has STEAM labs on both campuses (Winter Gardens is the TK-1 campus, Riverview is the 2-5 campus), music lessons, after school activities (parent paid), school community events, and more! We recommend this school to anyone who is looking for a quality education for their children.

In the Mandarin program specifically, this feels like a once in a lifetime opportunity to have your kids become fluent in Mandarin (as it is very difficult to learn Mandarin as an adult). We have been told my children sound like native Mandarin speakers...it blows me away every time! No matter what field they go into as adults, I hope they can use their language skills. Either way, they will be more developed learners and thinkers from the process of immersion.

I want to give a big shout out to staff, teachers, students and the Principal Mrs. Cox at RIA because they are awesome. My child started attending last year, in 1st grade and hes had an amazing journey. Since I attended the orientation, it was clear to me my son would have the support needed in the journey of learning a new language while staying on top of his academics. Chinese immersion program has been a great way to challenge my child, help him grow culturally, socially and academically. The teaching structure and attention the kids get at RIA has met my expectations. Having raised two more children who attended charter schools, its been easy for me to compare the level of education. Dont get me wrong, I was plenty happy with my charter schools, but RIA has met and gone beyond my expectations.

I greatly recommend the Chinese immersion program as well as the Spanish immersion program. Dont be afraid of the challenge as you and your student will gain much more.

My child is in the mandarin immersion program and he has learned so much, not only the language but also the culture. The teachers we have interacted with (k-2) have been great. I was surprised this was a public school but Im thrilled to have my child in the program. He is also learning Spanish as well as participating in a music program.

This is our second year, my daughter is in first grade. We have had a wonderful experience at this school! Coming from an English-speaking home, and entering an immersion school is tough, but so incredibly rewarding. Knowing our child is exposed to many cultures and 3 languages has been wonderful. We have enjoyed the unified, small school experience here. From the jog-a-thon to the international festival to the everyday activities, RIA rocks! I randomly was googling our school and came across this site. It's clear that people only write reviews when they want to complain so I figured I'd leave mine!

This used to be a great school, until Grace Cox took over as principal. Now I can not wait for my children do be done with this place. She talks to adults like we are preschoolers. She makes ridiculous rules and has very poor communication. Many quality teachers have left after her taking over. It's a shame, it used to be great.

My 4 teenagers completed k-5 at Riverview. They completed the chinese Language program. At this point in High school the kids who did the immersion program are graduating top of there class with GPA'S above 4.5 and even higher if they dual immersed. My youngest is in 5th grade at Riverview. He is a bit behind due to COVID and lack of self discipline but this year he has his favorite teacher ever. Sandy Wu. When my teens started they had Jodi Cox as their kindergarten teacher. She was inspiring and is now the principal. Overall the only thing I would have done differently is dual immersion instead of only chinese. Mostly because my kids would be #1 in HS GPA VS top 12. This is because the single immersion kids only get 2 AP classes per year vs dual immersed kids get 4 AP classes. Also, in general the Chinese people are ao friendly. Even years after my kids graduated I am still in contact with almost all of their past teachers. Jodi Cox never forgets my name when she sees me in the hall or even on another campus. I wish my grown children had this opportunity when they were younger. Also I had 2 children there with IEP's. All there needs were accomodated. I was recommended against immersion with my son because he has Autism. I was told he would struggle in English. That was not the case. He is lazy unfortunately but when he applies himself he gets 100% in English. We never had a problem with bullying. No regrets.

I had 4 children attend this school. We pulled our 2 younger ones out. The anoint of bullying that occurs at this school is outrageous! One teacher took a picture of the welts left on my child but didn't even send the other child to the principals office. If you are on the in with the staff and your child is a bully the school literally turns a blind eye.

No control over the students, discipline policies are weak, students are allowed to get away with horrible and inexcusable behaviors. Classroom management on the Mandarin side of the school is shockingly weak. I've heard the Spanish program's teachers a little better regarding their classroom management and behavioral expectations. Reading scores will suffer unless you get your child additional reading supports after school and math is only taught in Mandarin. This leaves gaps in traditional math acquisition. Learning a second language is great but without classroom management and strong behavioral expectation, students are not learning in this environment.

Amazing school! Incredible experience thus far. Phenomenal, special opportunity for kids! From day 1, I was impressed and wished that I could have had these opportunities of learning/immersing another language at such a young age and still learn everything else that all other schools learn plus so much more! These kids are VERY lucky, special kids. Schools like this in LA (where I lived 6 years ago and learned about Immersion schools and knew I wanted it) cost more than SD private schools. The fact that this experience is state-funded is incredible. Personally, I would pay for it.

My daughter is going into 4th grade in a few days. She's in the Spanish Immersion program. She is happy, talented, diverse and loves her school. We drive quite a distance to attend Riverview so she doesn't even go to school with her "local/neighborhood/sport" friends but has so many wonderful friendships with kids at Riverview that are from all over. The kids that go to this school are really Smart. Unique. Exceptional. And, they know they know it too. They know they have an edge over the rest. What they don't even realize is how much of an edge and just how many opportunities they are going to have in their near future and the rest of their lives. Yes, the school has a lot going on... lots of teachers, classrooms, kids- It's busy (not a small/quiet/private school feel).... and yes, they have gone thru changes- split into 2 campuses now and we new administrators. They were great before, but I feel like even better now. Not because of who they were/are, but because of the positive changes they are making. They are clearly defining the school's mission and model and molding it in such a way that it will only remain and become more successful every year. I love our new Principal who came on last year, Dr. Thurman. He and the new VP are going to rock this year. Every parent coming into this program is nervous. Because it is "DIFFERENT" and not for everyone. But, now, I am extremely happy and confident that I made the right decision. My daughter is 9, going into 4th...She reads, writes, performs, sings, presents and THINKS in 2 languages. She reads 5th grade level in Spanish and 4-5 in English. She does Math in Spanish. She writes Spanish Essays. They are very Tech savvy. Their State Test schools are above average across the board. She gets Mandarin enrichment as well. Ah-mazing!

Pros: Challenging, small classroom ratio size in comparison to other districts, caring teachers (our experience) and safe (the school remains locked throughout the school day and there is only one entrance during school hours.

Cons: Homework amount does not encourage family time (manageable, but definitely can hinder extra curricular activities to a certain degree or even basic family night) lack of diversity amongst students/decent amount of diversity amongst staff.

Maestra Mitlich awesome kinder teacher, she took a lot of time assisting my daughter with catching up, as a transfer from a 50/50 dual immersion program. Excellent caring teacher!

Srta. Aria, a very concerned and engaging 1st grade teacher, who truly wants the best for her students. Was also a great help with assisting my son with becoming more confident in his ability to speak and write in Spanish. I would recommend both of the above mentioned teachers!

Principal is also very involved, and listens to the concerns of parents.

This used to be a good school. Mrs. K now only focuses her energy on the language aspect. She is very good at bringing families into the district, but the school has grown too big for the program to be effective. The kids are not getting a well-rounded education here. Very disappointing.

DRAMA! Yes it's true. All teachers from the kinder rooms were made to move to the preschool area and then all first grade teachers where moved into the kinder classrooms. OOOPS! NO. Actually, all teachers had to move themselves from one end to the other with no district help!!!!! I saw not one happy face this weekend. CHAOS! What poor judgement. Riverview and Winter Gardens are becoming a dump because of it's administration. While I was moving, opening boxes, and prepping my room all administrators where on their Labor Day weekend parties relaxing.

My daughter is in third grade in the Spanish immersion program. She speaks, reads and writes Spanish with ease now, with no previous experience. She loves her school. We drive her from well outside the district to attend this school..it's a private school education without the expense. For all the negative reviews, there are 25 happy parents. Yes, the traffic and parking suck..but it's worth it in my opinion. Every school has a few unhappy parents. My daughters teachers have been excellent and issues are always dealt with professionally by the staff. Realize no school is "perfect!" There will be issues anywhere you go. But the bottom line is the kids gets something special here (learning in 3 languages plus great technology) that you can't get elsewhere!

I am a parent and a teacher a charter high school. I can validate that the curriculum and testing are done to meet the highest of expectations. With over a dozen years of experience in education, seeing the success of our students as proven by their test scores is enlightening. The results prove that these students are not being taught to any tests! These tests are not given in Spanish or Mandarin and students can not be taught test material in their daily studies. I have seen the success of not only this school but it's growth within the community. The strength of the educational processes, community support and involvement, and awareness of the need for the language skills in our globally advancing world are impressive and to be commended.

I have had nothing but GREAT experiences with RV!! Yeah the teachers can't talk to you before or after school, but that's because our children don't know that their teachers speak English!! But there is email and scheduling appointments with both the teacher and/or the principal. The cafeteria is following nutritional guidelines so whatever is on the menu is considered to be "nutritious" & there's always the option that you can make your own lunches. No one forces you to go to snack shack and it is also not used as a fundraiser, just something fun for the kids and 1/2 way through the week it's nice to have a treat!! I also have not school aged children and I like the new rule that you can't have siblings, do you know how hard it is to be the parent running the art in a class and having someone's little kid being a distraction? Use of coins as rewards is an awesome system- better than tickets. Teaches them responsibility and how to use numbers- a math & behavior lesson all in one! The staff is always wiling to help with any questions and concern that you have!

1-3 Classroom/teacher decisions.4-Find a School that offers these prgms, RV has parents volunteer their time to offer PE & Art. RV offers prgms to come in drama, science, art. RV has a choir! BUDGET CUTS! Our kids at RV get more opportunities then most kids at other schools. 5. IT"S A DISTRACTION & A LIABILITY & if you think for a second that someone wouldn't sue if their child got hurt while on campus then your CRAZY! Read the news. Take a moment and look at it from another's point of view. I may not want another child in class disturbing my child. 6. Snack Shack is another OPTION & the kids do have healthy option to choose from. Your child might not be allowed to have Junk Food, but my child is allowed to splurge once in awhile. 6 & 7- Lunchtime food & ESS issues aren't a schools decision! Those are made district wide. 8. RV has a Garden Club that meets regularly during lunchtime for any child who wants to attend. Many teachers use the garden for education purposes & the GC sells there fruits & vegi's at SS. 9. You have to pick up the phone or go to the office & schedule an appt like everyone else I see who seems to be able to do so. Please take the time to educate yourself .

Your child will learn a foreign language here, but there are serious problems with the school: 1) Excessive use of worksheets. No hands-on learning. Homework is busy-work, not meaningful. 2) Outdated reward system encourages consumerism. Kids work all week earning "coins" for performance/behavior. Coins are redeemed on Fri to buy plastic trinkets. 4) No art, PE, drama, music. School relies on parents for this, and it is sporadic. 5) Siblings not allowed in classrooms, so it's tough for parents to volunteer for art, PE, or music (makes no sense that a sibling can't join for these activities). Not a family friendly campus. 6) TOO MUCH JUNK FOOD BEING SOLD at Snack Shack (a terrible fundraising program that sells junk food full of sugar, salt and fat to kids to raise money for the school) and in cafeteria. Corn dogs and Little Ceasars pizza are not food, they are junk. Time to change the menu! 7) After care options are bad. I have heard horror stories about ESS. 8) Garden is gorgeous, but there is no time to use it. It is for show. Not part of curriculum. Curriculum is all worksheets. 8) Impossible to talk to principal. She is not available to hear parents' concerns.

At first, I really liked this school. I had one daughter 2nd who was in the English program and one in K doing Spanish. Kindergarten was wonderful. Great teacher,warm,welcoming, she was truly interested in the KIDS. The English teacher as well. The oldest attended through 5th grade but after 4th grade I had had enough and I transferred the younger one to a small charter school. Like other parents have said....commercialized. The teachers act like they're afraid of parents. Their doors are always closed. There is zero small talk after school with teachers. The principal never remembered my girls names even after having meetings with her. These are my 2 younger children. I have 2 older ones that had already been through elementary school. So I consider myself to be an experienced parent when it comes to this. I have heard several parents complain about this. One day, I had my youngest daughters teacher tell me I could not sit with my daughter outside the classroom before school. She told me to drop her off at the play ground....What!!! It all sounded great when we started. A school K - 8 ....perfect....No LMS. That's another story. Choose charter. They have happy teachers!

Riverview- I am proud to say my 8 year old daughter goes to this school. It makes me sad to here some of these complaint from parents because cause traffic. It is at all schools and I know for a fact and our teachers and staff work hard. You as parents knew going in it was going to be a lot of work so lets work diligently together and make this a better place for all and remember to communicate, I have personally had issues in my 4 years unless you communicate with the principal she is unable to fix the problem so please take your negative comments and turn them into something positive, they are human too. And remember all schools share the same issues that we do. So focus on your children needs and work with the staff, they are human too. Remember our children are blessed to have this program so lets take advantage of it. Our principal is amazing and does the best that she can so remember to communicate with her and your needs instead of spreading negative comments for all to see. I am a parent of a child that struggles each and every day but focuses on the positive issues at hand are you? Good communication goes along ways try it you will see and you too can make a difference

I have mixed emotions about the school. I have had my child in the program for 5 years now. In the beginning, it was wonderful. Lots of communication, a close nit group of students and faculty. However, over the course of the last couple years, it has grown too big, too fast. We now have our K kids at another campus which I am not thrilled about. I am hesitant starting my preschooler here next year with a sibling at another campus. I also agree with the lack of communication. We are 3 months into the school year and I have received ZERO emails, voicemails, etc from the school. What happened? It almost seems as tho the promotion and growth of the program is taking away from the focus on our kids and their needs.

I am a teacher at Riverview and took great offense to the allegation that Riverview is unprepared for an emergency. All teachers are trained on how to respond to emergencies, and the students and staff practice monthly drills to prepare for lockdowns, fire, and earthquakes. I also know that the local police helps to review our safety plan and observe the monthly drills. As for parking--yeah it's busy! Parents need to adhere to the staggered schedule to cut down on traffic. I suggest that the disgruntled parent(s), from earlier posts meet with the Principal to discuss their concerns. They'll learn how extensive the safety plan is, and how lucky they are to have a school community that goes above and beyond to ensure their children's safety.

Here is the discounting review to the September 14 post regarding test scores. If the disgruntled poster looked at the API score in the "Test Scores" tab you will notice that the school has an 879 score with the additional information that it is +4 from the year before. The school is given an 8/10 score for performance and the score for similar schools is 2/10. I mentioned in a previous post that the API scores for socio-economically disadvantaged children are also above the 800 target set by California as stated in the footnote information. I challenge the disgruntled poster to pull their child from the program NOW so as to alleviate in some small way, the parking problem I and 900 other families happily choose to deal with on a daily basis. New teachers and parking issues are indicators of a growing thriving program that is going through some growing pains, not a program that is in decline as the disgruntled poster would have people believe.

Love this school! It is a cutting-edge school, with test scores to prove it. My kids are happy and so am I. The other day my child befriended a young Chinese girl who was lost in a store. The girl only spoke Chinese, and my 2nd grade son was able to communicate with her and help her find her family. I'm sure this is one of many stories my children will have on how knowing multiple languages have enriched their lives and bridged barriers.

I have/had 2 sons in this program. The oldest had a great experience. The school was really something special. I will probably pull my youngest son out. It's completely out of hand. I have friends in the Chinese and that is an even bigger mess. The teachers are new to the school and new to teaching EVERY year. The school has become so big.....if an emergency happened, it would be catastrophic. The test scores HAVE been falling and they are spinning it or retesting. Lots of pretty speeches, power points and promises absolutely NO FOLLOW THRU EVER.

Obviously, if you read the words used in all these comments, you can tell they're written by the same person. Look at the test scores and you will see they are actually falling, with the exception of 4th grade (2012) and 5th grade science. The program has expanded beyond what should be considered safe on a campus that size (parking, emergency evacuation, etc). I'm sure there will be a comment posted in the next week discounting my review, but most parents who contribute any time at this school agree with me. I am counting down the months until June and will probably not return unless some of the promises that have been made actually happen. Parking is a MESS , quality is going down, program has expanded too fast, lack of communication and follow through=more stress & lots of chaos! Focus on the spanish OR mandarin and the safety of our children!!!

Riverview is an amazing charter that offers two language immersion programs (Spanish and Mandarin). The school has dedicated teachers, a helpful staff, and a phenomenal Principal. It has smart boards in the classrooms and introduces technology into the curriculum with the use of ipads. This school is truly preparing the leaders of our future.

Riverview Elementary is such a wonderful school. The staff are caring, creative, and dedicated. From the janitors to the principal to the office staff and teachers, the coordination of services for students is top-notch. My son just completed the Spanish immersion program and I know he is on track to be a successful middle school student. His teachers were phenomenal. The level of academic rigor in the classroom was fantastic. The parent involvement and the PTSA are stellar. There are so many after school activities for the students. The classrooms have top of the line technology such as Smartboards and iPads. I am excited for my 3rd grade son to continue his education at this wonderful school!

Riverview is an amazing success story for parents who were desperate for their children to learn another language. A program like this requires extra personnel, specialized teachers, flexibility and forward thought. It's cutting edge and the plethora of immersion programs sprouting up all over Southern California in it's wake is testament to the huge hole it filled in American education. The cutting edge is also the bleeding edge however and though everything hasn't been perfect, at least it's headed in the right direction. Parent's opinions and input are welcomed and appreciated. More than half come from outside our district and are driving from as far away as Imperial Beach, National City, and Escondido to Lakeside! If parents weren't an integral part of the process they wouldn't come. That's thanks to the principal. No, she's not perfect, but anyone with any true knowledge of what it's taken to build this program knows, it could NOT have been done without her. The traditional system isn't built for it and she's a maverick in the best sense of the word.

Last day of school I love our school. Riverview is home to the "Global Leaders" of tomorrow. Thanks to an amazing principal and now a very supportive Superintendent, our immersion school is allowing these students to learn Spanish, Mandarin, English and Technology. We have amazing teachers who are not afraid to build new areas to support students. With a program that is about 7 years old, it's unbelievable how great our kids are doing. I just got my kids report cards. There is so much assessment information and they are above grade level in nearly every area. Thank you Riverview!! Thank your Dr. Kyriakidis and entire staff!!

Awesome!! My daughter has been a student in the Spanish immersion program since kindergarten, and promoted today. She fully enjoyed her time at Riverview, and promoted with a increased interest in school and learning. I am not sure of the issues I read from a few of the more recent posts, but as a parent, I have been more than happy with my daughters education. During her second grade year, she was falling behind with her reading and writing skills, Se ora Santana stayed after school with her everyday for an hour to help her not only catch up, but surpass most of her students. Se ora Ochoa sparked an interest in science that my daughter had feed at home and is now driving her school decisions. The parent participation in the language classes is beyond normal, and the international fair and jog-a-thin have done away with the need to sell junk each year.

Riverview Elementary School is an amazing school that is much more like a private school than a public school. The children learn Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and English! The test scores in English are the highest in the district while the kids are learning these three languages. The leadership is strong, caring, and very innovative.Today is the amazing International Fair at Riverview. It is a great time for everyone to celebrate many different cultures and all the languages the children are learning!

Teached? Really? Riverview (primary, intermediate, secondary) = excellent Teachers = excellent Principal = innovative, creative, intelligent, focused on children, the best! It is our job to as parents to make sure our children are learning English and keeping up in math, science, and social studies. If this kind of commitment is too great, you may want to consider monolingual education. We LOVE Riverview!
