We are a new family to San Miguel Elementary and have been blown away with our experience since day one! Every level of interaction has been purposeful, energetic, and informative. I am overwhelmed with the opportunities for parent and family engagement. We began the school year with a goal to get involved and did not truly know what to expect. The strive for synergy and desire to create meaningful parent partnerships immediately caught our attention. Ms. Tonya, Secretary, plays an instrumental role as the first line of communication during registration. She is kind, knowledgeable, and prompt in her response leaving a wonderful first impression of the school and truly foreshadowing the greatness to come. Our teacher, Ms. Virgin, is an absolute rockstar with communication and her knowledge of students. Her pedagogy is developmentally appropriate and our son is thriving. Mrs. Jones (Principal) and Mr. J (AP) make a stellar admin duo and their passion is evident in all they do. We feel a sense of family and community as soon as we enter the parking lot each day. We are beyond thankful to be at SME and we cant wait to see what the future brings!

They deny that there is bullying, even if witnessed by a parent .
Posted: February 20, 2018
Absolutely not. Worst Special Needs classroom ever with a teacher who is sarcastic and yells at the students.
Posted: February 20, 2018
The teachers with whom we met were ineffective at best and ignorant at worst.
Posted: February 20, 2018
Bullying is the norm and they do nothing about it.

Overall leadership at Lemon Grove School District is uncsring and deplorabnle. Mrs. Norma Salcedo, the new Principal, seems to be trying to
make things better but the climate aT THE TOP LEVELS IS uncaring.

Could be the worst public school in the United States.

Our son was teased daily and was bullied - kids surrounded him and taunted him. Nothing was done.

They tested our son at a first grade level (he's in 6th) and were teaching him at that level. We pulled him from the shcool and the next school (which is great) accurately tested him at a 6th grade level.

The principal is sweet - she tries to do her best, but the teachers and the special education director lacked character.

Tried to speak to the assistant superintendent and assistant superintendent. They did not listen or respond to our concerns.

They tested our son at first grade level. The next school tested him and he was at grade level (sixth grade).

Worst school experience we have ever had. Bullying was not dealt with. If your child has any learning difficulties the head of special ed will try to bully you. Do no accept their IEP results. Our next school proved they were clearly and absolutely wrong in their assessment. If you have to MOVE.

Great school of the arts! Wonderful teachers and a principal who is fantastic. So proud to send my children at San Miguel.

My daughter has gone to San Miguel since kindergarten and I have to say, Mrs. Bergener is by far the best principle EVER! I mean how many people can say they can text their child's principle if there is a problem at school? I can. Also every teacher, lunch lady, janitor, t.a., etc., they all have a bright smile on there face every morning. As far as statistics go Mrs. Bergener has done everything possible to get my daughter the help she needed.

I was hesitant about sending my daughter to this school based on the statistics. Boy am I glad that I gave it a shot. The teachers here are very caring. You really get the vibe that there is a sincere desire to help your kids learn and succeed. But the most refreshing thing about this school is the principal. Heidi Bergener is like a Mary Poppins. You can tell that she has the school under control - everyone always seems so well behaved. But it is more than that - she is wholesome and caring. A person that I am really happy to have as an example and role model for my young daughter. I am very happy with this school, way more happy then I am with Lemon Grove as a whole. When I move, I will be looking into trying to keep my kids at San Miguel. I feel they excel at both helping children that need that extra push AND providing an environment where super bright children can be stimulated. We are working with Mrs. Gallardo this year and she goes out of her way to try to nurture my daughters voracious appetite for learning. She gives her challenges that the other students might not be ready for and it keeps her from being bored. Keep up the good work San Miguel!

Both my kids have been here for a few years and they seem very happy. The principal is amazing. She is visible, encouraging, and takes the time to make sure everything is running smoothly. She also listens to the parents concerns and takes ideas for improvement seriously. The teachers are incredible. Mrs. Alianelli, Mr. Stowe, Mrs. Sowvlen, Mr Vazquez, Mr. Decker, Mrs. Honig, Mrs. Bruner... They're all amazing. And the ladies in the front office crack me up. And don't get me started on Mr. Bill. The entire staff work very well together. I just wish more parents would volunteer to help. They spend so much of their own money and time to enrich these kids' lives and more parents should be involved. They would have a new-found respect for the faculty and staff.
