I have had two kids go through canyon view. It is a great school, tight knit community. The teachers are engaging and creative in their approach. Parents are supportive and engaged. They pledge allegiance every morning, the school takes pride in it's diversity with activities like around the world night, music program that honors our military and Veterans, and extracurricular programs that incourage inclusion and anti-bullying.

Canyon View Elementary is a wonderful school because it not only focuses on high academics but also makes sure every student feels supported. The special education program is a big part of that, with dedicated teachers and staff who provide the extra help students need to succeed. From special day classes to early intervention programs, the school makes sure kids get the right kind of support in a caring environment. What really stands out is how inclusive the community is—students are encouraged to learn and grow together, which helps everyone feel like they belong.

My child has been going to canyon view for 5 years. I read the other comments and I don't understand why they think it is a bad school. My child is in the fourth grade currently , and she found her years quite enjoyable. However, when she went to the after school program , she wanted me to drop her out of the program.

Contrary to the makeup of this community, Canyon View has followed suit with most other California public schools to indoctrinate students on political and social issues. A teacher recently played a CNN story about the Canadian Trucker Vaccination Protest. Cable news is highly polarized and no teacher at Canyon View would even consider running a Fox News story. Student vaccination and masking is highly contentious today. Poor judgment and no consequences.
The principal is indifferent to the issues that matter to parents and only focused on advancing his own agenda.
Canyon View should properly teach "social studies" and stay out of the concerns of families "social issues" and "values."

I am terribly disappointed with this school and how they have handled a bullying situation. I was completely dismissed and none of my issues were addressed directly even after my child was harassed at school by several children. Do not expect Canyon View to actually stand by their 'character' statement. They honor none it it and clearly do not care for your children. I am extremely disheartened.

Our oldest has been here for a few years now. His first year was a rough start- my feeling is that he was not given a chance and was pigeon-holed as a troublemaker right out of the gate, and ended up in the school office multiple times for behavior that is quite typically characteristic of an energetic 5 year old. It was only once his teacher understood how bright he was that they started to understand how to deal with him (by giving him more challenging work/activities) and that helped. It has been a little bit better but I think the teachers have a hard time with kids who are advanced (academically) for their age. I think the music, art, science, and PE programs are great. I do feel like the school has a ton of stay at home parents who can be on campus and volunteer, so if you aren't one of those fortunate families with one parent able to stay at home, you won't know what's going on at school and are left out a little bit. If you don't care about making friends with other parents, then it's not a huge deal. Also, one year they had the rudest traffic control person who regularly yelled cringeworthy phrases at innocent parents in the parking lot, but thankfully he found a different job the following year so isn't as much of a presence on campus anymore. Personally I think the school was desperate and didn't vet or train him in how to properly communicate with others, can you imagine what would happen if a teacher yelled inappropriate language at you from across the parking lot? There is a new principal this year, so we will see how that goes. Last year's principal was pretty great, but too bad she left. Overall I would rate this an average school for PUSD. I'll be more impressed if they can figure out what to do with my kid who is reading at 2 levels above his grade level!

My child went there for one year few years ago. Academically, it was a waste of time. My child didn't learn much during that year. We talked to teachers and administrators about our child's previous school which was excellent but they ignored our input. In addition, our child was bullied and the teacher did nothing to prevent it.

My son has done exceptionally well at Canyon View. He has loved his teachers and the staff, and often stuns me with what he's learned. I'm confident he will be ready for middle school, high school, and beyond because of the foundation built by his elementary education. CV also has programs for kids below grade level. Parent funding provides reading IMPACT, science, music and art--subjects no longer taught in public schools. There is also a psychologist on campus once a week. Parents and teachers work together to create well-rounded kids. Bullying is not tolerated by anyone, and is taken very seriously. My son is learning more than reading, writing, and math--he's learning to be a concerned citizen and a contributor to his community, as well as a good person and good friend. I couldn't ask for more from my son's education.

My daughter went to this schoolsome years ago. My experience was not well. I have an adhd child. They were not willing to assist in every way possible. They were not willing to work with me, but instead gave me a solution they were not willing to follow through on. As it turns out we moved and as they were willing to leave her behind, I wasn't and I homeschooled her. She is now graduated from high school and as it turned out it was the best decision I ever made. Special needs kids get left behind there instead of getting the right kind of help.

Canyon View has been an amazing place for all of my three children to learn and grow. The teachers have adjusted to the new Common Core adoption and have worked hard to inform parents about the changes. My fourth grade son has soared in math this year and their science lab has been a great way to enrich their already strong science program. My sons have learned to love reading and are strong communicators; both verbally and in writing. I always feel welcome when I enter the campus and there is a true sense of family between staff and families. My children could not have gotten a better start to their education than they have received at Canyon View. Go Coyotes!!

I have multiple children in canyon view. Grades K-3 are solid and have great teachers. Grade 4 has HUGE problems with the math and science curriculum. Particularly the math. The principal has "listened" for the past 2 years while parents bemoan their 4th grade problems and yet does nothing. There is an administrative tendency to "blame the child" if there are problems instead of looking at a flawed teacher or curriculum. Everything my 4th grader learned about 4th grade math came from home, not the classroom. That being said, the younger grades are great, just pick your 4th and 5th grade teacher VERY carefully as you will not get assistance with any problems.

Being part of Canyon View is like being part of a family, great teachers, great administrators and great principal. My children love this school and I do too. Parents are really involved.

The school administration is very helpful and pleasant (Donna, Gloria). Both my kids and I feel like we belong, like we are part of a big family at Canyon View. There is a heavy parent volunteering force that drives multiple activities and efforts and everyone is welcome to participate. Improvements needed IMO: stronger focus on academia, especially to promote science.

I LOVE this school. It is amazing. I would definitely recommend Mrs. Merrill. She is kind and excels at teaching. The front office staff,especially Mrs. Lou are very polite and will help you with anything you need. The principal is wonderful and has a lot of experience. Canyon View is a great place to learn.

As a parent, I've seen many changes @ Canyon View - all for the good of the students and the school. I cannot think of one person employed here who doesn't consider the welfare of the students to be of the hightest priority - mentally, physically, and academically. I have never felt that my children were "taught to the test". Hand in hand, my chidrens' teachers and I developed partnerships to ensure that my children could reach their potential ... being the best "me" I can become was their goal. As a result, my children have all become self-aware, self-sufficient members of society. Thank you, staff & teachers of Canyon View!

Canyon View was an excellent school for my son and daughter. The teachers and staff were very caring. They also provided my kids with an outstanding educational foundation. My son recently promoted from CV and is doing very well in middle school. My daughter is a straight A high school student. Thank you CV!

One reviewer says parents can only have a conference once a year. In talking to teachers, PUSD gives teachers a week at the end of the first trimester for conferences. However, parents can request a conference at any time. Did this reviewer request a second conference ? Re:Principal's office. I have had my son go to the principal's office as a witness to an event. He told me about it and I called her. She told me that whenever a child has made a poor behavior choice, parents are always called. Does she call when they go to her office for good things, no? I wouldn't expect her to. Regarding the nurse, again, I have found copies of the nurse forms at the bottom of my child's tote bag. The school nurse is required to fill out an incident form ANY time a student comes in to her office, so if your child isn't bring back the pink form, again, not the school's fault. Teachers are on the playground at recess and before school everyday; yard duties at lunch everyday. Teachers get a lunch break every day, get over it. Also, teachers are not required to be on duty after school. Really people? Canyon View is a top notch school with awesome teachers, a great parent community and great kids.

I agree with all of the reviews written in 2012. This school has big problems right now. The amount your child will learn from grades 1-5 will depend upon whether they get a "good" teacher or a "bad" teacher. Parents have been asking for changes and accountability from teaching staff and administration since the middle of the 2011-2012 school year. District staff is aware of the problems here, but up until this point, has been unwilling to get actively involved. In our 5 years here, my child has had 2 years where he/she has not learned much - in fact, Language Arts test scores went backwards during one of these years. I spent numerous hours helping my child with homework because the lessons were not being taught in the classroom. Communication between the teachers and parents is extremely poor, and you get one opportunity each year for a formal parent/teacher conference. I am hopeful that the teachers will make some changes for the 2012-2013 school year based upon parent feedback - if there aren't any, I will be pulling my child out and will either request an inter-district transfer to one of the 3 other schools that feed into our middle school or will be homeschooling.

The review from May 7, 2012 is very accurate! This school is very quick to label children. And once they put that label on your child, there is no escaping it. We had our child evaluated, as to their specific requests, & was told she was typical for her age. That seemed to only enrage them. There is absolutely no teacher/parent communication...unless they want money. Then it borders along the lines of harassment. Don't bother to pay dues for the PTA, because you will never be notified of anything. They don't notify you if your child is sent to the principal's office, they don't notify you if your child is seen by the nurse, there is zero communication. They only time we heard from the nurse was when our daughter was injured to the point of needing medical attention. Students spend 1/4 of the day outside at recess & then watch a movie everyday after the last recess until it 's time to go home. Teachers are not present on the playground, during lunch, or after school. Parents huddle around the only entrance/exit to the school so when students are dismissed, they are forced to walk through a crowd....good luck finding your child. This school is a joke.

My daughter went here from the pre-K PEPP program to second grade. It was a very negative experience for her, as there is tremendous pressure on the kids to do well academically. From daily homework work pages to admonitions not to miss any school and threatening notes over tardiness, it was really ridiculous. However the final straw came with the STAR testing which starts in 2nd grade. You should know that schools like Canyon View "teach to the test" for weeks beforehand, and her teacher darkly hinted that her score would impact her grade. Tactics like this is probably one reason why schools like this have inflated scores. Even though my daughter scored highly on the tests so she must have been "learning," she would make up excuses or lie about being sick so she wouldn't have to go to school. Now my daughter goes to a more balanced Charter School, and they don't even go over any of the STAR test subjects with the kids. They just tell them to do their best. This is probably why many charter school STAR test scores can be low, so don't be fooled into thinking this reflects on the kids' intelligence.
