Our experience at Meadowbrook Middle School left me with serious concerns about communication, follow-through, and the integrity of leadership.
My son experienced issues that required repeated parent advocacy, including bullying-related concerns and an incident where his belongings were damaged. What bothered me most was not just the incidents themselves, but how hard I had to push to get clear answers, accountability, and follow-through.
When administrators and adult staff are involved, families should be able to trust that concerns are handled honestly, documented properly, and followed up on without parents having to repeatedly escalate. Unfortunately, that was not our experience.
One of my biggest concerns was the lack of honesty and consistency in communication with students. There were situations where adult staff told my son one thing, but when I followed up as the parent, the explanation changed or the responsibility was shifted back onto the student. That is extremely frustrating because children are already at a disadvantage when speaking up to adults in authority. Adults should not be able to rely on their position to avoid accountability or assume a students word will matter less.
There were individual staff members who tried to help, and I do appreciate that. But the overall system did not feel dependable. My biggest disappointment is with the leadership culture and the lack of accountability when parents raise serious concerns in good faith.
Parents should not have to fight this hard to make sure their child is safe, seen, and fairly supported.

This is a horrible school, the principal absolutely gives you no support whatsoever!!! So if any parents are considering about sending your children to this school, I highly advise you to think twice!! This school ratings used to be at a 8, and now dropping to a score of 5 !!!! I truly regret that I picked this school for my daughters. Please don't make the same mistake that I did. Especially the PE teachers, horrible, forced the students to run when it was raining outside or the temperature as highly over 90 degree.

Our family has loved our experience at Meadowbrook. Our oldest who has autism and a 504 plan attended from 2019 to 2022. Those were some tough years due to the pandemic for everyone. However, the teachers, counselors, administration did a fantastic job helping kids get through and provided what the kids needed upon their return to campus the best of their abilities. The school counselor even made a visit to our house and did frequent check-ins during a particularly tough time. Bullying was absolutely not tolerated and addressed quickly and appropriately. Staff did a good job following our son's accommodations and needs. We appreciated the emphasis on social-emotional learning in addition to academics. Our youngest is currently in 7th grade and is thriving. He loves being part of the band (it is clear the band teacher absolutely loves her job and is so encouraging), attends after school ACES, and has a sweet group of friends. The school is quite diverse and it seems the teachers do their best to work with all the to different needs, learning styles, and cultures. Two negatives are the condition of the campus (rumors are that it will be updated soon) and that the kids split off into three different high schools due to boundaries (Poway, Mt. Carmel, and Rancho Bernardo), which makes the kids sad to have to say goodbye to some of their middle school besties. We are grateful to all Meadowbrook staff for our positive middle school experience.

Good school, nice staffs, my son will go to seventh school, he likes here. And very good after school program, they provide some clubs you can choose, my son chose Debate club, the debate teacher help and encourage him. Very appreciate the whole schools efforts!

Overall, hope Meadowbrook school will be better and better!

I love this school! everyone says that this school doesn't have any diversity but that is not true, my school has lots of activities and we even have COMUNITY OF KINDNESS or NO PLACE FOR HATE lessons to remind students that everyone is welcome at Meadowbrook.

We moved out of the district and our Son went to Meadowbrook for 8th grade. We had a fantastic experience here. All the Teachers were caring and academic rigor was on par or above other schools in the district. Teachers communicated much more frequently than our old school. A great school that is underrated.

We transferred here from twin peaks and we love it!!! My son was bullied at twin peaks terribly and the staff was uncaring at TP. Coming here has been a game changer for my son. Tons of new friends, loves his teachers, the principal is great! The person out front of the school welcoming children always is so warm and friendly. The free after school program for parents that work is also a huge bonus that my son lovesss!!! We love this school!

When my Daughter started at MBMS for 6th grade (21-22) I was NOT impressed! Granted, it was still a weird time coming out of Covid but it seemed as if that were an excuse for just about everything! Their polices made no sense at all, for example, temps were pushing the 100s & since the water fountains were not usable, students had to bring their own water; that part was fine but there was no way for them to refill the water bottles!!! One day my Daughter called crying having anxiety because she forgot her water & it was boiling hot outside. The office told her to go to the nurse & the nurse gave her a small paper cup with a drink of water!! SHE WAS DEHYDRATED, what was a sip of water going to do?! I was so upset & took gatorade & water to the officethey said they WERE NOT ALLOWED to give anything to her! It was a mess! This similar situation happened to a handful of her classmates too! Other issues were: bullying not being addressed, FORCED conversations about LGBTQ issues, race issues (which IMO are non issues until they make it one), cultural appropriation controversy about a Hawaiian themed DANCE ( their first dance in a few years due to covid). The Asst principal had an issue w/the Hawaiian leis! The kids had to change the name of the dance, etc-it was totally uncalled for! Again making/forcing controversy for no reason! There were also some issues around black history month involving the Principal. Overall, it seemed as if there was to much focus on social issues when the focus should be on ACADEMICS & LEARNING! We decided to pull her out for 7th grade & she was on track to go to a charter school but a month before this school year started she really wanted to stay, & we live very close to the schoolso here we are, about a month in & it seems like some issues have been addressed (repairs made, extra safety measures have been put in place, parent volunteers are back in full swing, etc). My hope is that this year there will be more parent engagement & that the administration/teachers will find their way to a happy medium on social issues & keep their personal politics out of the school. So far it seems as if things are a little more organized then they were last year & I am more cautiously optimistic for this year

I would just like to address all the bullying at Ghettobrook Middle school. There is no discipline for the students bullying my child. Not to mention the school is literally falling apart. Water fountains dont work, floors are like a cutting board, AC/Heat doesnt work, and tons of rotten food in the lockers. I am also very disappointed with the staff at Ghettobrook. My child went to the nurse and she had some pretty unnecessary attitude towards my child. Regret placing my child here, if there are any other schools in your area I would consider those ones instead.

I learned that a 6th grade teacher is making the kids watch CNN once a week in a Social Studies class. Explain to me how this is valuable classroom time. Also, many posts on social media talk about the out of control bullying. The school needs to be doing more. We will be removing our child from PUSD and going to private school. I can't wait.

My elder son studied here and graduated last year during the pandemic. This year my younger one will be graduating, Lots of changes in admin has somewhat affected the school in a negative manner.

Many teachers who were there last year no longer work here, many are too old to care about the students. Bullying incidents have slowly crept up but again nobody cares. All they do is send the bully to the office, no consequences for bad behavior. Every class my son has been in this year, he has the senior most teachers btw, has a group of knuckle heads who think it is fun to disrupt the classroom.

Also, there are no IAs to help the SPED students in class, where did they all go? Serious students, placed in tables with clowns have to deal with the clowns who play music loudly due to constant access to Chromebook.

Thankfully, he will graduate this year. Hopefully he will goto a more disciplined high school.

The field is great but don't be fooled. The rest of the campus is falling apart: locks in the bathrooms don't work, lockers are trashed, and the classrooms lack basic supplies. Many of the teachers are okay, but the e news teacher is plain out rude and the math teachers assign way too much homework each day. The school has a "no place for hate" program that does absolutely nothing. There is more bullying at ghettobrook than any other school I've been to. In addition, the dress code makes no sense! The standardized testing policy is also terrible. Some teachers deduct points from your grade if you don't improve, but isn't it their fault if you didn't learn what you needed to increase your score? However, there are great electives and history classes. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this school if there is another school in your area and definitely would not suggest choicing into this school.

Having had five of our children go through Meadowbrook we can say that we are so happy we didn't have them attend anywhere else. Not only are the teachers and administration experienced, caring and dedicated; but the students themselves display confidence and respect for others. The diversity within the campus has helped our children to develop into well rounded globally thinking individuals.

This school has undergone an extensive turnaround over the past several years under the direction of its current principal, Dr. Miguel Carrillo. The school has always had some very good teachers, but school spirit, investment and scores have increased substantially under Dr. Carrillo. My only disappointment is that the band program, once outstanding, has deteriorated significantly under inexperienced and laissez-faire leadership.

There is no other school in all of Poway and San Diego that offers more to students than Meadowbrook. My 7th grader loves the school, his classes are challenging, and he is learning each day. Parents are not just welcomed at the school but they are encouraged to participate and Dr. Carrillo is the mist approachable Principal.

Meadowbrook Middle School is a great school for kids. They offer a great program called "The Academy" that focuses on additional elective. It's similar to after school program but kids can pick another elective class for 50 more minutes. My daughter enjoys her elective classes. Their leadership is outstanding!! I would recommend this school to anyone!

I am an parent of a first grader. who will one day attend Meadowbrook Middle School. I wanted to get an idea of what were in for in the future. I called Principal Carrillo out of the blue, and asked if I could meet with him. He told me to come on in the next day! He was so friendly, and genuinely excited about his school, the students and about keeping the teachers inspired, completely open to creative teaching ideas and solutions. His "Community of Kindness" model is truly inspiring and did much to alleviate concerns I had heard about the school under the prior Principal. Principal Carrillo is VERY smart and interested in being proactive and innovative, to be ahead of the curve, as evidenced by his wins two years in a row for San Diego County's Principal of the Year (in his first 2 years at Meadowbrook!) He is someone I would want to know in my personal life, he is fascinating, and seriously---his enthusiasm is contagious. I love that he made time to speak with a parent who doesn't even have a child attending his school yet!
