We have 2 kids in this school. Despite this school being in a different neighborhood (where we have 2 10/10 elementary schools in our neighborhood), we chose this school without regret. Our kids make great friends, have wonderful teachers, and are learning so much mandarin!!

The downside is most of the friends my kids make are living in different neighborhoods which makes play dates more annoying, but otherwise, the experience has been great.

I dunno about test scores or what not, but my older son is scoring 2 grades higher than what he’s at, so I’m not concerned about that at all.

It bewilders me how poorly the school is shown on these ratings. I’m posting to say that our experience is way better.

Your kid can learn Mandarin for free. It's a public school, which is amazing. We had a few duds for teachers, but mostly the teachers were excellent. My child received a very strong, well rounded education. The downside is many of the children won't learn Mandarin very well. But, my child did. Recommend!

My family and I have been a part of the Barnard family for ten years. My older child finished Kindergarten to 5th grade. My younger child is currently in 4th grade. My experience has been wonderful. I am truly grateful that we have this unique and special school in San Diego. My kids have learned more Mandarin Chinese than they could have from weekend Chinese school. The teachers are incredibly hard working. Even during distance learning, during COVID, the teachers did an amazing job. They balance being strict and having high expectations with making sure the kids feel loved and supported. The PTA is strong and parents are engaged. The office staff is friendly and understanding. The school is very diverse and my kids have enjoyed many of the extra curriculars and after school programs that are offered. Hopefully we will return to normal soon so parents can help volunteer on campus, and the kids can have field trips again.

I have two kids currently at Barnard. They absolutely love going to school everyday! I feel proud to send them there. The accomplishments of all the kids truly amazes me. In a nut shell, the positives: community- to include kids, parents, teachers and all staff, fun yet challenging environment, the opportunity to learn a language we do not speak in our home and immerse in a new culture. Incredibly grateful my children have the opportunities provided by Barnard.

We had a wonderful time at Barnard Elementary. My son went there from Kindergarten to 5th grade. All of the teachers and staff were so supportive. It was also great to learn about another culture and learn another language. I would highly recommend this school to other families.

I spent nine years as a parent at Barnard Mandarin Magnet Elementary School (2013-2022). My son and daughter both completed the K-5 Mandarin immersion program and now are in high school and middle school respectively. My kids loved the school, its teachers, and the three different principals that were present during their years there. My kids have an incredible knowledge of the Mandarin language and of Asian culture. We have visited China three times. Interacting with locals has been a positive and joyous experience. We plan to continue with the Mandarin immersion program through high school.

But there is so much more to Barnard than just Mandarin. The school offers an excellent, well-rounded ELA, math, and science curriculum. Their extra language skills only enhanced their engagement and absorption of other topics. The PTA offers a ton of wonderful extracurricular activities. My kids learned so much, made great friends with diverse families from throughout San Diego county, and collected terrific childhood memories of the many great times at Barnard.

Highly recommended!

I have two kids here and both kids love it here. I love the community. The parents, PTA, staff, teachers are all so welcoming. I have had many email correspondence with the school nurse, office staff, and teachers, all of them have been prompt and attentive.

I really like the new principal. He’s been very hands on. He knew my UTK student by name, walked him into the cafeteria personally in the morning for breakfast and ran laps with him during running club to try and encourage him.

My kids love their teachers and PE coach.

My son is 8 years old currently in 3rd grade he had attending Barnard since Kindergarten, we are a not Chinese speaking family but we prioritized language learning in our home.
We been amazed by the progress of our son in Mandarin learning and how confident he is communicating in Mandarin ! The cultural enrichment is a big part of learning another language and Barnard does an outstanding job at it.
We love how diverse and inclusive is the school, we have not experienced any bulling or discrimination on any type.
Communication is very good at every level, from the Teachers, office staff, Principal and PTA.
There are 3 different after school programs on site, I recommend Three Treasure they have a Mandarin Tutor as part of their staff.

Our experience is been 100% positive, academic and personal, my son is happy and looking forward to go to school every day.

This is our second year here at Barnard. We have been over the moon with the academics in which our daughter is thriving learning Chinese as well as excelling in the more traditional subject matter of elementary school. We have had an amazing experience learning about a different culture and embracing that into our lives.

Have two kids here. They have always had great teachers and support staff. An awesome environment that creates a real community with kids, families, and teachers. I would Highly recommend though because it’s Chinese immersion you probably need to start in kinder or 1st grade.

Very diverse community, feels good to be here with our multiracial family. Mandarin learning is going well so far for my eldest (1st grade). I am impressed by the teachers’ professionalism and the length of time they have worked at and committed to the school.

We have a new principal this year who is excellent so far and has experience in this immersion language style of learning.
The PTA is strong and extremely supportive…I think this is key to having good family-staff relations and for bringing in more resources to the school.

So thankful to be here for a few more years.

We love Barnard. Because it’s a choice school the parents are very engaged and committed to the kids’ learning. We have a stellar PTA that raises over $100k per year to provide supplemental learning software and programs, field trips, library books, science and art programs, extra teaching assistants or counselor time. The school and PTA partner together to put on an amazing Chinese New Year festival, and various other events. The teachers and staff are great. My kid started speaking Chinese quickly and exponentially grew her reading skills as well. She loves going to school.

My son started Kindergarten at Barnard in Fall 2019, so far we love it! He is just a six year old boy who would rather play than sit in class all day, so very challenging in today's competitive Kindergarten environment. At one point we were contemplating private school, but for us what was most important was to be fluent in another language, or at least the eventual understanding that he's competing with jobs from across the globe. There is a lot of Mandarin in Kindergarten, 80%/20% ratio, so parent do have to supplement the English the first year. At six my son would be considered behind in reading by normal standards, but good at Math. This is also due to the fact he's not really interested in school yet. So far his teacher is very understanding and supportive, and gets it that he's just still really immature and he just needs time. We're working together so he himself understands why reading progress is important, little by little, but more importantly is that he loves to go to school. He comes home everyday singing a Mandarin song, and Barnard does a great job at teaching Kindergartners Mandarin through play and song. Social and emotional development are so very important in Kindergarten, and we are very happy that his teacher and the school push this part of education given San Diego Unified's need to push the systematic instruction more. It's only our first year, but so far Barnard is excellent. Lots of parent involvement behind the scenes to push the school to be one of the best Mandarin schools offered. There is also a Mandarin IB program that goes through to Middle and High School. So lots of potential. After one semester, he already understands basic conversation. I've also heard the Middle School kids who finished at Barnard, their Mandarin is very conversational. Bottom Line: If you want your child to have a good social upbringing, global perspective, and a skill that will go far in our more global economy, go to Barnard!

Sorry, but I regret going to this school for education. There are better schools around here that probably teach better, because the teachers here showed favorites and least favorites.

Our son just completed kindergarten. He loves Barnard, his teachers, and friends. We speak no mandarin at home but so far he has shown no fear or anxiety about being exposed to so much mandarin at school. The parent community is extremely involved and supportive.

Great school small school feel with parents that do their best to stay involved and participate in their children's learning and education. We do have to supplement reading/ writing English but well worth it considering our children are benefiting from dual language learning. We are preparing our children to be global minded and cultivating an appreciation for cultural diversity.

Our daughter and son are having an excellent experience at Barnard. Our son is in kindergarten and already speaks Mandarin! Our daughter is in 4th grade and has excelled in both her English and Mandarin studies. We love that the Confucius Institute from SDSU comes to teach our children different Chinese arts. I have always appreciated that Barnard incorporates the arts into the education program. There are also 3 options for after-school care and 2 before-school programs, along with many different after school clubs. There is a good amount of parent participation and the principal has a strong background in running immersion programs. I feel like we are getting a private-school education while being a part of San Diego Unified. I look forward to our kids continuing their Mandarin studies into middle & high school.

I can't imagine a better school for our daughter. The principal is so active and caring. She makes a big difference. Believe me, I knew the other principal and he was never there, always absent for solving problems. Had he not left we would have left the school. It always seemed that it was about him, not our kids. But enough of that guy. Our school rocks! The teachers and interns are superb and the entire staff work as a team. We have the best Coach in the entire universe. Parents participate, collaborate and care. Kids learn and are happy. What else do we need!

5stars out of 5, Barnard is a great school for triple x generations , my two daughters love to go to school everyday, love afternoon activities , admire and respect their dedicated hard working teachers .
We are non related mandarin family but my 2 girls speak exercellent mandarin.
I never heard of any bullying stories.

We are so spoiled by the PTA at our school. My kids participate in art contests, community festivals, school plays, classroom crafts, after school programs, and so much more. Imagine a school where 450 kids actually want to hang out at school on a Friday night in order to participate in "literacy night". Plus, there are so many resources for the parents. Before we started kindergarten, the PTA arranged summer playdates, a dine-out, orientations, sent weekly email tips, signed us up for their newsletter, matched us with a parent mentor, and rolled out the red carpet for us. They even had a morning coffee event on the first day of school to make sure we all got through that first day on a good note. I can't thank the PTA enough for all they have done. I have visited a lot of schools and I have a lot of friends throughout the county/country. No other school does this much for their students or parents.

Our daughter has been at Barnard for four years. She has gone from speaking not a word of Mandarin and never hearing it at home to a proficient speaker, reader and writer. While reviewing our Kindergarten options in San Diego, we were slightly underwhelmed with our neighborhood school, feeling like we couldn't afford many years of private school and not really wanting to go the private route anyway. We hoped that Barnard would offer a unique challenge and opportunity. So far it feels as though my child has received the kind of education I would never expect to be available in a public school and I am very grateful for that. The teachers are dedicated and truly care. We have experienced both principals mentioned in other comments. The past principal was a better showman and public personality but I'm not sure that translated into a better environment or services for the kids than the current principal. I think she has received a bit of backlash for simply not being the same person he was, but she does seem dedicated to fighting for what the school needs in a challenging time in SDUSD in general. The parent community is lovely. There are very involved parents, there are parents who are less involved on a daily basis but try to provide how they can be it through funding, etc. Overall I am very happy to have a child at this school and plan to send our next child there in the coming years.

My daughter has been at Barnard since kindergarten. We love the school, students, staff, teachers, and community! I am disappointed with the recent comment about the principal. She's more quiet and behind the scenes than the old principal, but she is working hard for ALL the kids and has organized our program and secured a curriculum. The old principal was more about putting himself out there and marketing the school to get it established. They are different types of leaders. Kinder is 80% Mandarin, 20% English. Grades 1 to 5 are 50/50. There is a pathway to continue Mandarin all the way to 12th grade at Mission Bay Middle, and Mission Bay High. Just take a tour of the school, talk to parents, and decide for yourself if it is the right fit for your family.

This school was great under the old principal. He was very involved and worked hard to foster good relationships with the teachers, staff, students, families, and community. The new principal is extremely hands-off and allows the overbearing PTA to pretty much run the school. She hides in her office all day and doesn't do a thing to combat bullying. There are no more exciting events happening nor special guests that come to visit the school like they used to under the old principal. What used to feel like a special school that inspired a love of education now seems like yet another public school meant to process our kids in and out like mindless sheep. It is so disappointing.

We are extremely disappointment with Barnard. We have attended for 3 years now and all of our friends are gone. Each year the homework expectations/curriculum changes and there is almost NO support for working parents to assist their children with Mandarin. Unless you can commit long hours to helping your child stay motivated to learn Chinese, AVOID.

My daughter just started at Barnard in Kindergarten. She has learned so much, in Chinese and in English. The teachers and other staff there are talented, creative, skilled and dedicated, I'm very impressed with everyone there. I asked my daughter what she liked about her teacher, and she said 'she loves me very much.' So she's not just getting a great education, she is part of a community that cares about the kids and their success.

My daughter is in the first immersion class at Barnard (now 4th-grade) and last spring break we traveled to Singapore and she was very comfortable conversing in Chinese. She could read store signs and restaurant menus for me. I was extremely impressed! In this new world and here on the west coast an adult entering the work force with a second language of Chinese would immediately excel (and a third language of Spanish would really be helpful). them in their job. Outside of the Chinese emersion my child has excelled in math and reading (evident in her state scores) due to the excellent programs at Barnard for the students and their parents. The Kinder reading strategy class provided for the parents was just wonderful in setting a foundation for reading that could be applied at home. There are parent classes in Mandarin and in Korean (for the new Korean language emersion now offered for children at Barnard) to help the parents to converse with their children. The school was just moved to a bigger campus in Pacific Beach (near the 5 freeway) and the School Board is talking about new buildings in the near future for the eventual expansion into Japanese and then Tagalog.

We drive 40 minutes each morning to take our two grade school children to Barnard. The mandarin language problem offered is obviously the main attraction. This school has a great core group of teachers, as well as a very involved parent base, which is absolutely vital for school development. Our kids participate in the after-school program, which is very well run at this school. Overall, an excellent program. If we had to do it all over again, we wouldn't change a thing!

My daughter has entered Kindergarten at Barnard Asian Pacific Language Academy . We are thrilled to have an opportunity for my daughter to learn a third language. This school has it all! An amazing, energetic principal who is the friendlies principal I have ever met. It has great teachers, a great PTA and an eager community of parents willing to help out the school to become the best. The school recently raised it's API Score to 902!!! This is impressive for a Mandarin immersion school. My daughter has only been at this school for a week and she is already is sharing the words she has learned in Mandarin. The first day of school was so smooth and I don't think I saw one kid crying. They have a great system where all the kids meet for assembly and go over announcements, pledge of allegiance and then they all walk to their respective classrooms. The teachers are amazing with the kids. We commute from out of district 15 miles each day and sit through traffic but is very much worth it. This school is a hidden jewel of the San Diego Unified School District. I would recommend this school to every parent in San Diego County.

We LOVE Barnard! My daughter currently attends Barnard and it has been wonderful experience. Mr Park's passion to lead the school is contagious- they really do want to change education for the better. The teachers are also fabulous! They are dedicated and really want to see the students excel. My daughter is speaking, reading and writting Chinese and loves it! She is also learning Chess, Kung-Fu and Science in her after school enrichment programs. I would highly recommend this school!!!

I highly recommend this school as our child has flourished under their guidance. Both his Chinese and English skills are growing everyday and he LOVES going to school. We also greatly appreciate the home resources to assist in learning Chinese, such as the free access to the BetterChinese site that allows them to get extra practice despite not having anyone at home who speaks the language. Don t worry about them not having enough instruction in English, my child was only able to barely sound out words like P-A-T when starting kindergarten and by November of first grade is easily reading Arthur books aloud to us and even chapter books such as The Magic Tree House. It s amazing how some of our English learners have excelled in Chinese too, many even better than the native English speakers! A bilingual and trilingual generation is being created here, come join us! Can t wait for the school to expand next year in their new Pacific Beach cluster location. (Ignore old reviews from this site as they were written before the school became a magnet and the administration has changed for the better since then)

Our son is a 1st-grader at Barnard. He loves his teachers & they do a great job of integrating Chinese culture in a way that is age-appropriate & engaging (song & dance, role playing, etc.). It is great to see how much Chinese he already able to speak, write, & comprehend. When kids came from Taiwan & China during the summer program, I was amazed at how much he was already able to communicate! Also, our son is an above-level English reader, & Barnard s teachers were proactive to place him in a group so he could be challenged & encouraged to keep learning at a pace appropriate for his abilities. Barnard s teachers are extremely forward-thinking & our school benefits from student teachers & interns that are additional resources for our students in the face of budget cuts. It's no wonder why we just won a $1 million grant, the administration is superb! The after-school programs also are really good, currently he takes chess & Korean, & really is thriving & loving it! The parents are very engaged & are good at fund-raising & are very innovative about finding ways to improve our school. I feel there is real future in our kids at Barnard & am excited to be a part of it!

My son comes home with some amazing Mandarin skills after being in the immersion program for only 5 months. Neither parent speaks Mandarin, so it's all down to the school. When we test him on an iPad at home, he does great. Wish the current school had some grass, but there will be plenty when the school moves to their new location during the summer break.

My nephew is thriving in this school. He's been in the immersion program since kinde. In the face of budget cuts in the district, this school community has found ways to support excellent teaching. There are interns who help in the classroom from Taiwan and China. The cross cultural programs are fantastic. My nephew is excelling in both Mandarin and basic subjects. There is a rich variety of activities and after school programs. The teachers are engaging and the parents are involved. My nephew gets a lot of personal attention.

This is the best school in San Diego. If you want your child to have great teachers,principal and best academic. Then you should consider this school. I live 25 mins from school,but I have to scarify to drive for the best education for my son.

Our daughter is the youngest child in her class (late November birthday) and has flourished at Barnard. We were concerned that her age and maturity combined with the added stress of learning a new language would delay her academic abilities. This did not occur, and instead she is getting top marks in all of her subjects. The principal is incredibly dedicated and enthusiastic, the teaching staff is exceptional, and their little brains absorb a shocking amount of mandarin. We also love the community at Barnard between the teachers and parents. It is a great place. We are so excited to send our son in a few years!

Barnard is a great community. My daughter has enjoyed her fellow students, her teachers, and administration. She has excelled in Mandarin as well as English, math and social studies. My son is currently in kindergarten at Barnard, and he loves it. It is amazing how much Mandarin he has learned in such a short amount of time, in addition to his English reading and writing skills. The teachers are wonderful and so attentive to each child's individual needs. It's a far cry from what I've heard from some of my friends' kids' schools. This school was definitely the best choice for us.

I LOVE this school! My kids are thriving in math, science, english, and mandarin. This school has a rigorous academic curriculum, and my kids' english learning has not fallen behind. In fact, both my kids are reading above grade level in english, as are most of the kids in their classes. That is a testament to the dedication of the principal, teachers, staff, and parents, who go above and beyond to make this school a success. My kids did not speak mandarin before attending this school, nor do we speak mandarin at home. Most kids attending the school are NOT native mandarin speakers, and parents don't need to know mandarin to help with school work. Check out the latest CST scores, and particularly the GAINS in the CST scores since the mandarin immersion model has been adopted. Learning a new language develops neurological activity in the brain that will help our kids not only in language development, but in overall brain development. Barnard is dedicated to producing smart, balanced, culture-sensitive kids, who will be ready to tackle the 21st century world. I LOVE this school!

I love this school! My 1st grader attends Barnard and I have been thrilled with the community feeling of the school. To clear up two myths: 1) You don't have to live nearby to enroll (we are 10 miles away). 2) Most parents of Barnard kids don't speak Chinese and you don't need to speak Chinese to help your child with her homework. Barnard has incredibly talented teachers with unique skills, offers online tools to help your child learn, and is a high-profile school that some people drive to daily from over 35 miles away. I absolutely recommend it!
