This is my fifth year at this school, and I couldn’t be a prouder parent. It’s truly an underrated gem that offers so much more than a standard elementary curriculum — it’s a place where learning comes alive through creativity, compassion, and community.

I have been more than impressed with this school. Academics, safety, social and emotional support are all top priority at this school. The teachers are cared for and supported and they have wonderful relationships with their students.

Our oldest is finishing 5th grade at CPJMA this year so we have now been at CPJMA for 6 years. We can't say enough good things about the school. We have another child who just finished 2nd grade. Every single one of their teachers have been top notch. Both of kids are excelling.

This is such a gem of a school. There are less than 300 students. The music program is phenomenal. Both my kids now play violin and my older one also plays ukelele and guitar which he learned in the after school music club. The new principal, Sakeenah Smith, reminds students each morning to be kind, considerate, and respectful. We just love being part of the CPJMA community.

We have been at CPJMA for 2 years now and absolutely LOVE it! The teachers are all so fabulous and they are so happy EVERYDAY (a sign of a good culture). The principal is so involved and cares so much about these students, I feel so safe leaving my kids with them. The music program (both music and violin) provides an enriched learning experience and has also helped build confidence in our daughter. She is thriving in reading, writing, and math, in just kindergarten. We are so grateful for this amazing school!

My son has been at CPJMA now for 2 year, for Kindergarten and now 1st grade. Both of his teachers have been amazing! He has learned so much and is such a good reader. Both his teachers have made learning so much fun and he is excited to go to school each day. On top of the amazing teacher my son is also getting the opportunity to learn violin and is in choir. Being able to learn an instrument at such a young age is priceless. On top of all of this the Principle Smith, is hard working and truly care about all the kids and staff and is always putting the needs of the kids first. We couldn’t be happier to have our children go to Crown Point Junior Music Academy.

I live very close to Crown Point, but had not even entered the school before deciding to choice into PBE and Bird Rock. We ended up going to PBE for Kindergarten, but did not have a great experience with the office staff. No one smiled or greeted anyone with kindness, it was a negative vibe. Our daughter made great friends at PBE, which we still have, since we all live in PB. After going to an open house at Crown Point, I loved the feel of our small beach community, so we decided to switch schools for first grade and we have been here ever since. Our daughter is sweet natured and a sensitive soul, and her teachers at Crown Point have been so gentle and kind. She is also thriving in Math, Reading, Writing plus she enjoys the Music and Art. Since all the schools have the same curriculum, as far as academics, I think your child gets out what you put in, but the teachers are great academically as well. We had one incidence with a bully at Crown Point, in which the principal dealt with it immediately, and our daughter was assured it was handled. Contrary to PBE, where I was not even made aware of someone hurting our daughter, but my daughter's finger was black and blue. Once I addressed it with the teacher, there was no apology or follow up. What I like best about Crown Point is the Kindness, Encouragement, Inclusion, and Positive teachers, parents and kids. I would encourage you to check it out Crown Point yourself, if you are considering to choice into the PB/LJ neighborhoods. Im sure you will feel the warmth and joy that we do.

My two daughters were in this school since preschool and our experience has been excellent. I cannot thank enough all the teachers and staff who work here and make this school such a great place. The music teachers and especially the violin teacher, Mr. Luchs, have given the best foundations for my daughters’ music education. Since kindergarten, music has been a very important part of my daughters’ education and life. I have no doubt that music has been the reason of their academic success. We are going to miss this school community now that my youngest daughter is starting middle school, but we are very thankful for the marvelous years we could enjoy here.

We love CPJMA. Our family has been at this school for two years and my daughter is now in 1st grade. Her Kindergarten teacher and this years teachers are amazing. My daughter has grown so much academically and musically. She began the Suzuki violin last year and I got to be part of the lessons with her for the first year. She loves the violin! We are so happy with this school! Also know that this is a PUBLIC school, not a charter nor a private school.

We’ve been at this school for a few years now and it’s had its ups and it’s downs. Our child is struggling in a couple areas and, unfortunately, no help is offered to those who do struggle. We’ve chatted with another parent who has been st the school for a while and mentioned the parent organization used to pay for after school tutoring but that has since stopped leaving those kids who struggle, with absolutely no help whatsoever. It seems that unless your child is one of the lucky ones who understands everything, you’re out of luck.

I too wish they would move in the direction of no homework. It’s been proven to not be beneficial to a child’s education and after school time should be spent with family and allowing the kids to be kids.

Our experience at Crown Point has been great. My daughter loves it and my husband and I have been very pleased. The atmosphere there feels great every time we walk onto campus. The teachers, staff and also all the parents I've met have been so great. The violin program is more than I could have hoped for and it is an amazing part of this school. The music program as a whole is so great!

Bullying can happen anywhere but I see far more of the students helping each other out and working together. If someone falls down or is crying, many students will come by to check on them and help them out.

We love this school. I cannot say enough good things about the teachers. I am so thankful that my child has had the benefit of their genuine love and care along with strong academics. Music is integrated in many different ways, from the classrooms, to assemblies and special music programs, our Suzuki violin classes, general music classes, and more.

I noticed a lot of the previous reviews cited problems with our previous Principal as being a major issue. We now have a new Principal, Mr. Lopez, and he is a good leader who knows policy and enforces it. He is also kind and compassionate to students and families. My biggest issues with the school, however, are bad district policies.

Our music programs, brand new Think Big reading room, beautiful gardens, great events, and amazing teachers makes this a hidden jewel of a small elementary with a close-knit school community!

I would prefer the homework policy goes in the direction of the "no homework" movement, since studies have shown that homework provides no statistical benefit, and there are better ways to spend the evenings after school- family time is important.

This school does amazing work in helping students to gain the skills they need to be compassionate, caring and respectful to everyone around them. The have Character Counts Cards that students can earn. At some point, a few cards get drawn and those students earn Chilling with the Principal time. A time to have a popscicle with the Principal for being outstanding students.

This school year brought in a new principal. His name is Mr. Lopez. Normally, when we’ve had new principles they immediately changed everything. Mr. Lopez took his time to settle in and get to know those around him and has SLOWLY changed a few things which made the transition easy for everyone involved.

This has been a wonderful school for my children. CPJMA has great, dedicated teachers. Music is a part of life at here, and the PTO funds a wonderful YMCA PE program. The PTO is dedicated to supporting and enhancing the educational experience of all students at the school. Here are some highlights from the next couple of weeks:

On Thursday May 5th, our K-3 students will view a presentation by Josef Spacek and Miroslav Sekera of The La Jolla Music Society, while our 4th and 5th graders visit the Gator by the Bay Festival at San Diego Bay. On Friday, May 6th, our Recorder Club will perform at the San Diego Recorder Festival. Also on Friday, May 6th, from 5pm to 7pm, CPJMA will have a Cinco de Mayo celebration which will include a Dance Club performance, Mariachi Music from Mariachi Imperial, Loteria, and delicious Mexican food. On Saturday, May 7th, our Music Club will perform at Gator by the Bay. On Monday, May 9th, CPJMA will again be sending a team to compete in the Music Memory Bee at SDSU. On Friday, May 13, members of the San Diego Symphony will present and perform for our students at CPJMA.

The principal has done good by making sure the music is highly represented and the teachers are amazing but, the principal likes to play favorites with the parent volunteers. If she doesn't like you, she will make your life a living hell.

My child has attended Crown Point Junior Music Academy for 3 years. This is an absolutely fantastic school. My child learned to play the violin in Kindergarten. Mr. Luchs is the violin instructor. One of the best music instructors ever. Highly qualified and his sense of humor keeps the kids laughing. Concerts are incredible! Every instructor has been exceptional. I cannot say enough how happy I am to have found this wonderful school. It has been a privilege to be part of this beautiful educational experience!

I had high hopes for this school. I love all of the extracurricular activities at this school and the teachers have been fine. However if you are ever in need of having any communication with the Principal it is shockingly disappointing how rude and innefective she is. I won't go into specifics but after meeting with the Principal and how we were treated sent off some huge red flags. Definitely wondering about whether or not to send my child (who has been very unhappy here as it is) to another school next year. Really disappointed by the abrasive couldn't care less attitude that is so blatantly displayed by the principal.

The school cultivates a well rounded, creative, fun environment for children to learn. Every morning the kids gather in the schoolyard to jog while listening to music. Perfect way to practice social skills while waking up the brain & excercising. This also gives the parents a chance to meet/participate. Music is encouraged everywhere: Lessons for violin, guitar, recorder, voice, rock band, dance, musicals/acting... Every week there is art, yoga, karate, educational assembles, music, etc. and a ton of after school actives. I appreciate that the focus is on balancing the academic and creative brain. ND

My daughter thrived at this school. There was no library or physcial education. Unfortunatley. But she loved the music and art. Only had 1 questionable teacher out of the 3 and that person is no longer there. Very happy with the 4th/5th grade combo class.

I am a student at Crown Point Jr. Music Academy. I have been here since preschool, and I feel that this school has been a great experience for me. With programs like the Susuki violin and clubs, such as recorder club, dance club, music club, choir, and music memory, our school has been like a second home to me. I have played violin for 5 years, I play recorder,and enjoy our weekly music class. We have a great staff that work hard to make this school a great place.CPJMA is a fun, safe place . Our school recently started ASB, otherwise known as Associated Student Body, I am part of it, and have found it a great learning experience. Every single teacher works hard to teach and every day we learn somthing new. If you are looking for a fun, safe ,learning enviorment, then this is the place!! This is a GREAT school, with a GREAT staff, GREAT teachers, and a GREAT principal!!!

I'm a CPJMA parent who learned violin with one of our two daughters. My husband learned to play it with the older one. We can know proudly say that they play better than us. I love the teachers and all the staff who work here. All of them do a great team. Our custodian is the best, he makes sure that teachers, parents and students have everything they need and that the school always is safe and clean. As soon as you enter our school you can feel a friendly atmosphere as you see parents volunteering even before the school rings in the running club every morning, in the classrooms during school hours, learning violin with their children, participating in parent classes from the Ballard Parent University, planning events in PTO meetings, or getting involved with ELAC, coffee with the principal, etc.. Our afterschool programs are great and each day there are more ideas and parents involved to do this school even better!

I love this school! The teachers are wonderful, and the office staff is very friendly, helpful, and professional. The criticism of Mrs. Bartolini is not fair. If anyone has a complaint about class size, they should complain to the school board and not blame her. I am particularly excited about the Suzuki Violin program. We are so fortunate to have Mr. Luchs as our teacher. My Kindergarten daughter will be starting instruction after the Thanksgiving Holiday. This is after two months of parent instruction. A few months ago I couldn't imagine that I would be playing violin, but I can actually play! Parent participation is required for 1st year K, 1, and 2 students. 3d, 4th and 5th grade violin students do not require parent participation but parents are always welcome and encouraged to come to class. When you come visit our wonderful school, you will sense a family atmosphere. There is no other school like it.

Unless you actually work at an elementary school and know the hard work that goes on in the beginning of the school year, then please do not post any negative comments. Office staff has only 2 weeks to prepare for the school year. Teachers return a week before school starts, but come in on their vacation time to set up their classrooms!! And not to mention there are only 2 staff members in the office working their butts off to get all the students in class rosters, preparing for the Back to School event, making sure the school is nice and neat, and follow up on hundreds of email and district work that comes in over the summer! I know because I'm on the PTO and I see the all the work they have to do to prepare for the opening of a new school year. They are always looking for volunteers to help make each year successful and run a lot smoother. Step up and volunteer! THIS SCHOOL IS THE BEST SCHOOL MY DAUGHTER HAS EVER BEEN AT. GREAT STAFF, GREAT LEADER, GREAT TEACHERS, AND A GREAT STRONG PTO.

UPDATE to my Aug 22 review. I have decided to change my rating of this school to one star due to numerous issues we personally had with the organization and administration upon the start of the school year. In short, assumptions were made about our status (i.e. "we thought you transferred") even though we had filled out all the proper paperwork last spring. Our kids were not assigned a class on Back to School night. We had to fight to get a class assignment, then within the first 3 days of school found it all both class assignments were wrong. Class sizes exceed the state requirements. We have contacted the Quality Assurance office about our concerns. Please note this rating has nothing to do with the teachers our kids have had this year, just the management and administration.

This used to be an amazing little school with dedicated parents and a strong principle but ever since Muriel Bartolini came along there is tension amongst the staff and nearly every family that worked tirelessly for this school has gone elsewhere. We used to have a strong PTO/PTA but with Muriel in charge, parents efforts there are ignored and Muriel really only cares for her own agenda. I moved my daughter to Kate Sessions after being with CPJMA since she was in preschool. Last year my daughter's classroom had many children with extreme behavioral issues and I voiced my concern many times for additional classroom support. Muriel sat with me in face-to-face meetings, told me she would provide the support and never did. Then as an attempt to punish the children misbehaving (I believe it was the negative school environment causing many of the behaviors) my daughter's entire class was banned from end of year field trips. My daughter won awards that year, why should she have missed field trips? I met with Muriel again and she said all the children would absolutely go on the field trips and she agreed with me. But then when the time came to go, our kids missed out. Avoid this school.

If you're someone who expects friendly office staff, a principle with strong leadership skills who is an effective communicator, and a school that supports your child's education and developmental needs, LOOK ELSEWHERE! My daughter has a medical condition which requires her to use the bathroom at least every two hours during the school day. I spoke with the principle and her teachers about the matter, I even received an email response from Mrs. Bartolini herself stating that everyone understood and that my daughter would always be able to use the bathroom as often as she needed. I can't express how many times my child came home from school wet, with stories about how the teachers would flat out tell her no, she couldn't use the bathroom. After speaking with Mrs. Bartolini and being assured that my daughter's medical issues would be swept under the rug, my daughter came home and told me the music teachers told her no she couldn't use the bathroom and stated, "If you needed to go so bad you should have went at recess." My poor child! She came home so many times in tears because no one would let her use the restroom. I feel bad for all of the children at CPJMA, thank god we left!

Crown Point Jr. Music Academy is a wonderful neighborhood school with excellence teachers and parents. There are many great things going on at this school especially this past year with our new principal, Ms. Bartolini. She has done so many amazing things to beautifying the school. We strongly recommend this school to any family that wants their children to have a strong academic and music exposure.

CPJMA is a great school!!! Plus, what other school provides so many after school music and dance programs for FREE. Nothing in this world is ever perfect, but the staff works really hard to do the best they can with what they got. Schools aren't the same as they were before with all the many changes that happen each year and so much funding being taken away from schools. More than ever this next school year is one where teachers, staff, students, and parents need to UNITE. Join their PTO and make a difference!

Love love this school. It went from a school that was going to be closed because of enrollment to a booming music academy. I have had the opportunity to volunteer/substitute here. The parents/staff and administration has been more that helpful. They are always warm and friendly. If you need anything just go to the office and the administration will do what it can to get it for you or help you. Such a wonderful neighborhood school and a music academy too,

This past school year has seen CPJMA go from being a super school, to being a below average school. Although we were spoiled by the effectiveness of our previous principal, I think that the community was ready to embrace a new principal who shared our goals for the school. Unfortunately, the present principal does not listen to the parents or the teachers, and doesn't seem to want suggestions or seem to care about this alienation. At the beginning, we thought she was just making mistakes because she was a brand new principal. But as the year went on, things got worse instead of better. She's lost what had become a strong PTA; she doesn't have the support of teachers; students don't seem to bond with her. Hopefully, if she comes back to CPJMA in the fall, her superiors will have helped her with her poor leadership and communication skills. If things remain the same as at the end of the year, this is not a school I would recommend for any new child---enroll in surrounding schools. CPJMA and the current principal are just not a good fit. Let's get the school back to the great school it was! Teachers are the same, parents are the same, just need a new leader.

The worse nightmare for a parent with a special needs child. The school does not have the appropriate resources to provide the services outlined in each child's IEP. The classrooms became chaotic and children with special needs began to exhibit behavioral issues. My son has both ADHD and Autism. Upon asking for a review, the school admitted that my child had "fallen through the cracks" and had not received the services he was entitled to. I hired a Special Education Advocate to review my son's case. Over 200 hours of services were missing from the records. He had not received the special education support he needed in the classroom to succeed academically. His evaluation in May (done by school) confirmed it. All we received was an apology from the principal and a promise that "next year, they would do better". She explained that the two Special Education case workers assigned to her school were retiring this year and "unfortunately, they no longer had their heart in it". Like my son, many other children were affected. Unfortunately many have no idea or don't know how to request their children's records. I am hoping this will motivated parents to take action.

As a parent I'm very happy with this school. The teachers are incredible. They care about the kids and hold high expectations. The multiple music programs are amazing and are something most other public schools don't have. I also love the community feel and the friendliness of the other parents and teachers. I would recommend this school to all!

In my short time having my child enrolled I have come to expect nothing but the highest expections for this school. Time and time again I am impressed with the involvement by the principal and the teachers involved, I find not only will my child's teacher make him a better student, but make him a better person for being enrolled.

The test scores and the teachers are great. Even better is school's use of the Orff approach to education and its Suzuki violin program. The school has many great after-school programs including a rock band, choral group, and dance, but for me everything radiates from its Suzuki violin instruction, which for those that choose to participate, occurs during normal school hours. The Suzuki program encourages a high level of parental support that trickles down into everything that goes on at CPJMA from test scores, to homework, to student self-esteem, and school spirit. I love this school and could not imagine sending my children anywhere else.

CPJMA keeps getting better and better. Test scores and academic achievements have soared thanks to the dedicated teachers who have gone above and beyond to teach each student. The music program is outstanding. Staff, teachers and parents have come together to successfully petition for the security of the Suzuki Violin Program. New principal for 2013-14 school year has accomplished much in just a few months.

In just the relatively short period of time that Crown Point Junior Music Academy ("CPJMA") became a music academy and implemented the Suzuki Violin program, CPJMA has grown from 115 children to over 350. CPJMA is now best known for its rigorous academics, increased attendance, bridging the language and cultural gaps, and a unique and innovative music program that has cultivated students who appreciate the visual and performing arts. Noteworthy is that in the span of 5 years CPJMA s API score has rocketed to the top. CPJMA s PTO is active, vibrant and growing. Demographically diverse parents attend PTO meetings. I have seen the academic impact of the program on our own son, who started when he was five (5), and the positive affect on our entire family. Our son has developed self-confidence, self-motivation, maturity and discipline in the manner in which he completes his homework, does his chores, and practices his violin. Crown Point s program has drawn in our extended family as many of them have become involved and engaged in the school s activities and programs. I feel privileged to be part of the CPJMA family.

The teachers at this little school are fantastic. What they have managed to achieve amidst continual (and demoralizing) slashing of funding is exceptional. The school has a happy feeling as you walk through-- big old windows, gardens outside of many of the classrooms, and lots of enthusiasm within. It's noteworthy that the teachers know most of the kids by sight and name. Additionally, the student body is quite ethnically and socioeconomically diverse. I wish the district wasn't constantly threatening to close it for budget reasons, but so far the teachers and parents have managed to keep it going.

While my family is no longer in the Pacific Beach area, my daughter started at this school when they still had a full time preschool program and stayed there for 4 years. I cannot say enough about the teachers and staff and how much they go above and beyond to make sure their students get what they need. I was the President of the PTO, volunteered for the PTA, learned how to play the violin in the Suzuki program along with my daughter, worked at the school, and was so impressed by the community of parents that has supported the school and volunteered for the events that raise money to keep the music programs running. We have a new principal that started last year in 2011 who has come in and done a phenomenal job of supporting all of the teachers, staff, and parents in continuing the music programs and providing the resources to make sure every student is receiving the best education possible. You cannot make a better decision than to send your children to CPJMA where the whole family will be welcomed with open arms. Look at the music programs, test scores, and quality of the staff! Definitely a 10! We will greatly miss being a part of this wonderful school! Jen A.
