This school has some of the best teachers, some not so great, but the administration leaves much to be desired.
Bullying and inappropriate touch is dismissed as normal middle school behavior, never truly corrected, and leaving students to feel unsafe. The suggestion to the bullied student is to join a sport to stop the bullying. Administration speaks to parents equally as dismissively and will not own up to the failings on campus being an issue. The culture on campus is if you aren't part of the right group you are going to be miserable.

My son attended this school during covid and while it was his responsibility to do the right thing and make the right choices, the staff was not supportive at all. There were many fights, a lot of inappropriate things like vaping in the bathrooms. This is a women ran school and while I completely support women it would have been nice to have a male presence. The kids would have better respect if there was a male Principal or VP. In the end the teachers did their jobs well, some better than others. I would recommend this school if your child can tune out the drama of middle school. Mine could not and it caused a lot of anguish. When I would reach out to the principal Mrs. Jaramillo she wouldn't respond at all and I did not appreciate the avoidance. The last three years of middle school have been very frustrating and difficult, I do not solely blame the teacher, principal or school environment I do hold my son accountable but also believe their could have been much better support than what we received. Glad we are finished and onto a new chapter.

My son is finishing up 6th grade and it has been a great year. The beginning of school was a bit bumpy with the transition from Elementary to Middle School, but the staff at De Portola go out of their way to help the kids! Mr. Brock is very involved with the students and parents. Amy Ericson is a phenomenal counselor and is available all the time for kids and parents. I love how my son's teachers will immediately get back to be when I email them.. I really feel like choosing De Portola was the best decision for my son!

This is a great school considering it's a affiliated to a large Public School District. We relocated from New England to San Diego due to the Military. My son was starting 7th grade with an IEP and my daughter is Gen Ed in 6th. I began calling the schools to get them enrolled in July and no one answered for weeks which worried me because I did not want them to attend Farb due to the rating that that school had. When they had open registration, I requested De Portola but was told they probably would not have room. Based on what I heard, when the Principal of De Portola went to the administration to pick up the packets of the new students, He took everyone that wanted to attend his school!!! This was an A++++ in my book!!! So thrilled!!! It's a big school, and you need to stay on your kids and assist the staff with teaching your children. They have new online grading system that you can access anytime to assist you in making sure your kids are doing what they are suppose to be doing. Many of the teachers rally around the kids and the support is great if your an involved parent with your kids learning! Love this school, and would recommend it as the best Middle school in SD!!!

De Portola Middle School is place of learning and fun at the same time. Everyone who goes to Deportola ,including me, are really nice people. Some people help you with your homework, some will invite you to play sports during lunch, and the club are really fun. Five stars up!!!!
