My son has Level 1 autism and a learning disability, he receives zero support. His IEP and speech therapy were cancelled. His speech is choppy, he doesn't remember how objects are called, he has a hard time to put sentences together due to processing. Apparently, he doesn't struggle enough to deserve any kind of support. Due to my mistake in the intake form, he is in English Learner Program. English is his first language. He doesn't need English classes, he needs Speech therapy! Since he has zero support during the English testing, he can never get out of this program. No one is taking into consideration that his understanding and expression is affected by his diagnosis. The principal suggested that, maybe, I'm a helicopter parent, and I see things that are not there. And, right after that, she suggested that, maybe, I don't pay enough attention to him. I have paperwork from doctors for his diagnosis! So entitled and arrogant. She likes to listen to herself and give long pointless speeches. All school meeting are held during working hours, so if you actually work, you can never attend. No emotional support for my daughter struggling to make friends either. I'm looking into ways to switch school for the sake of my children.

My daughter is wrapping up her first year at Lafayette as a UTK student and we couldn’t have dreamed of a better first school year! Living in the same neighborhood as classmates and the many opportunities for parent involvement gave us the sense of community we were hoping for in a school. We enjoyed after school enrichment by taking advantage of the ASYO Soccer & Heartlight Dance classes. Can’t wait for next year and to see the campus renovations start to take place. Go Spitfires!

I had to move my daughter from her previous school to Lafayette last year because I felt that she was not getting the education she needed and was behind in some areas. Since she has been at Lafayette, she has flourished socially, academically and emotionally. The areas were she was behind grade level, she is now currently meeting and that is because the teacher at Lafayette truly invest there time to each student that they teach. My decision to change schools was the best decision I ever made with regards to her education.

My child has severe adhd and is struggling, no IEP has been put into place and I’ve beefed the school for months, the school caters towards their hearing impaired students more than any other students and kids with other disabilities don’t get the help they need.

Lafayette is a wonderful school! It is the hub for SDUSD's auditory services, so deaf and hard of hearing elementary school students are centered at this school to take part in the district's DHH (deaf/hard-of-hearing) or auditory/listening (for those with cochlear implants) programs. What is awesome for ALL the students (those with disabilities or not), is having additional adults in the classrooms to facilitate learning! Para-educators and American Sign Language interpreters go the extra mile to be sure students with hearing differences get the information they need, but this serves ALL the students well! My kid (who has normal hearing) learned ASL (American Sign Language) while at Lafayette! Extra visual aids and lots of kinesthetic activities make learning "stick!" Reading/writing happens early at Lafayette due to so much sight word recognition and small group focus. Lafayette is finally starting to get the praise & acknowledgment that its excellent principal, faculty and staff deserve. It received a Quality Schools in Every Neighborhood a few years ago in the areas of Teaching and Learning. There have been significant gains in standardized testing scores in just a few short years. The strong administration & dedicated teachers know the kids well & communicate regularly with families. Lots of neighborhood kids in attendance make it feel like a small-town school community-- students play after school together, you see Lafayette students riding bikes and scooters in the surrounding area, kids and parents wear school sweatshirts & t-shirts proudly around the neighborhood. School families meet regularly at the park, the Balboa branch library, and help in the beautiful school gardens. This will be the 5th year that the school has applied for and received an award from the Sage Garden Project and Sprouts, that sponsors a gardening/cooking program for all students during the school day. The school is about to receive a lot more funding
( >$1.2M); it won a coveted Community School designation that will bring sizeable dollars to meet needs of the school community over the next few years. Lafayette was recently named one of "America's Healthiest Schools." There are awesome annual events like Fall Festival, Spring Garden Festival and movie nights to bring the community together. So much more! Stop into the office to ask for a tour of the campus and meet teachers, staff & parents with one of the members of Lafayette's Educational Foundation (formed this year).

This couple weeks at Lafayette has been a nightmare for my daughter, this is not a good place for a kid with a disability.

This school promotes equality and encourages all to embrace their differences. In addition to all of that, they teach students how to sign and communicate with the deaf and hard of hearing students on campus. Our daughter has learned so much!

Anne is an excellent principal. She is very supportive of staff and creates an environment that promotes a strong relationship among staff, students, and parents. We couldn't be happier!

My daughter was enrolled in a infant deaf/hearing loss program with Lafayette Elementary school when she was two years old. And our experience was wonderful. The staffs were awesome and so sweet, it was sad switching my daughter out of the school since we don't live nearby the school. But overall I recommend this school to anyone who wants a friendly and family oriented environment for your kids.
