As a parent of autistic twin four-year-olds, I was naturally nervous having my twins enter school. But I am super happy with the support they have at Mason! Principal Harrison leads with compassion, Miss Rose is phenomenal at accommodating Students with special needs. Their teachers, Miss Colón and Mrs. Rosas are dedicated, experienced excellent leaders! Mason is actually not our neighborhood school, but it was an option for us for TK since our neighborhood school was full, our neighborhood school is actually “higher rated“, but did a choice voucher through the school district because I want my twins to continue their education at Mason! I love All of the staff there! From the ladies who greet you in the front office to the janitor, etc. everyone is very kind and experienced!

My son attended this school until 2nd grade. All teachers and the school principal are awesome! My son learnt to read books and mathematics in this school. He got sufficient homework in his second grade. The school rating is low but the education is good! They have a good policy about bullying, they educate kids to not do that. Impressive!

When we first moved here from the east coast (2022) because my husband is in the military, our son was struggling and not coping well with the move. When we enrolled him at Mason he really struggled, but instead of calling and telling me to come get him, they worked with him one on one to help him become comfortable, they would inform me of his bad day at pick up and what they did and reassured me that they are there to help. This year (2023) my son has attended Mason for a full school year and I am beyond impressed and extremely happy with how this school is handling my child’s education! I will also mention my son had a 504 plan at his last school but when we got here they advised to move him to IEP, his teachers and helpers are amazing and said this was his year and has improved tremendously. My boy wakes up everyday literally every single day happy to go to school. They really truly care and are always greeting the kids and parents by first name basis with bright smiles. When bringing up concerns they listen and take it seriously. The only thing I am not used to yet is the lack of updates on his IEP and progress, so you’ll have to reach out but again we came from the east coast where they updated at the end of every single semester. So you’ll have to reach out but they’re response time is QUICK so don’t stress to much. I had a lot of moms on the support pages tell me that Mason was horrible and a bunch of other ugly names, honestly do not listen to them! I seriously highly recommend giving Mason a chance before settling on just others opinions, because you never know. Everyone’s experience is different. My daughter will be attending UTK this next school year (2023-2024) and they already know her by name and welcome her with open arms. She is so excited to go! The principal came up to us and personally told me she recognized our last name on the list for UTK and told us my daughter had been accepted and asked how to properly say her name. The teachers and staff, really seem to love making a connection with every parent and student and genuinely go out of their to. They do hand out homework in kindergarten and it’s honestly the right amount. They also do their best to provide resources for Military children, they also have a military advocate on the campus for children.
If you enjoy volunteering this school also provides a lot of opportunities, from field trips to after school activities to just about everything.

Not a fan of this school at all. Office staff just continues personal conversations when you walk in and choose to greet you on their time. I also find it rude how they speak English to you and turn around to speak Spanish amongst themselves. Teachers are unprofessional and show favoritism. My child has stated on multiple occasions that they just watch videos all day. The principal is a joke. Office never asks for ID when students are checked out. I should’ve listened to my neighbors when they advised us to run far away from this school. Would not recommend.

This school I should not recommend because of some teachers not caring to students. The vice principal was terrible and one of the teachers were a nightmare.

My son has a learning disability and their IEP program has not been doing their job on getting him on track and anywhere near par with his academics.

I have had my kids in 4 different schools in 2 different districts 2 being in chula vista and the other 2 in mira mesa and this school is by far the worst school i have had my kids in. One of my kids has a learning disability and they have yet to show any improvement with my son and his IEP goals what so ever. My kinder comes home with partial homework that is done with almost half the answers wrong! Do these teachers even care!? I think not!!! Even the admin in the office fail to even acknowledge presence at the front desk. Very unprofessional. The staff at this school is horrible.

I have 2 kids that go to this school and one of my kids has the same writing assigment week after week that is not effective. Seems like they just hand out a set of 20 words weekly and forget it. Not effecrive at all. Same with my kinder. He gets homework that is half done amd the answers are not right! What are these teachers doing? Obviously not there job! I can go on and on about why this school is not doing their job.

The school gives 1 page (front and back) of homework and divides the number of items for the whole week. The kids have poor study habits and aren't learning as much because they are used to doing barely half a page of homework everyday. The extra homework that was given didn't even seem like "extra" because it replaced the other piece of paper that they usually get.

The school means well and wants kids to enjoy being a kid by not giving a lot of homework, however kids are getting lazy and not doing good in class. In the long run the kids will have a hard time when they move on to the next grade because they wont be able to handle the pressure of adjusting to a heavier and higher level of schoolwork. The school should at least work something out where the kids can learn more by giving a substantial/fair amount of homework, or give out books/hand outs/study guides that the students can work on and read at home (laptops are good but reading a book and writing is better).
Also, dealing with staff at the front office is usually not a good experience so if you can, try not to go there.

School staff are dismissive of parents how voice concerns. It’s a we know what we are doing attitude when parents offer advice. I have see several reviews about IEP issues all true. When you go to a meeting they act as if they don’t know what can and can’t be done. Even when the IEP is hashed out unless you go to the school everyday the IEP will not be followed. School will tell you everything they think you are doing wrong at home but get attitude when you question things at the school. So if you can stay away especially if you have a child with a IEP. They call them team meeting but it really ends up being parents vs this school.

Never get any homework or see graded school work. So until you get a report card you really don’t know how you child is doing.

Teachers are very short with parents, students. I told my child to ask about a program they use and the teacher told my child to figure it out. So I called and teacher said they never said that. I believe my child.

We have only been attending Mason for a few months. My son was behind in reading and thanks to his teacher and her differentiation, he is on level. She is amazing, and he always leaves school telling me what a great day he had. He also meets with the military counselor once a week with a group from his class, and he greatly looks forward to going to that. He is having a great experience.

Mason Elementary is located in a diverse and multicultural area, and is also one of the main schools for the local Marine Corps base at Miramar. Normally I would feel at a school in this type of situation would struggle for identity and consistency. With that said, it does not. They have embrace their unique situation and admitted something special. From the teachers who actually teach to the principal who actually cares both about the teachers and about the students. I am truly impressed both with their attitude and with their successes. Mason Elementary is truly a great school!

There is new leadership at Mason and it is very evident! It is a very open and friendly campus. The teachers are awesome and my kids are turning into great thinkers. I love that they are preparing them for life. There is quite a bit of technology here as well.

I have two children who currently attend this school and one who moved to middle school. This year I have seen my child grow to love reading and writing. The atmosphere is happy and welcoming. The front office is new and has made a great first impression. The students are friendly and welcoming. The teachers are really focused on reading and writing. We love this school. My experiences with staff ha been positive. I am an active parent who isn't afraid to ask questions. Parking and drop off is an issue however it's parents who are not following the law causing issues. Looking forward to many more years.

I sent my kids here because we came to a new military base and this is where we were assigned. The school is what you make of it. SOME of the teachers are great. I think the vice principal (she will be the principal next year) is extremely rude and not a people person. They also need to figure something out when it comes to parking so parents can walk their kids in without parking blocks away. The drop off/pick up zone is a big joke. The people running it think they are police officers, threaten people and over step their boundaries all the time.

Special needs students in my case do not have the opportunity to grow in this school. On the east coast my son was allotted much more induvidualized learning. I have seen improvement in math but decline in reading and writing. Very disappointed and attempting to research other options before he is too far behind to self correct. we have our IEP meeting tomorrow but I hear bad things about the level of helpfulness and professionalism shown with the IEP meeting. My son has dropped knowledge of more then half of his sight words and several letters on the reading scale just in the few months since we first arrived. There is either not enough manning to support the school or not enough effort and attention.

Special Needs Students STAY AWAY from this School!! I am having one of the worst experiences of my life in this School started by my Child's IEP Not being met, and the Principal screaming at me, because my Child does not "Just deal with his issues on his own" and criticize my Parenting skills.. Please please stay away from this school, I am going through terrible moments.

Mason Elementary is a great school, the staff is so friendly and helpful, the kids seem to strive and flourish in the atmosphere the staff has created. They have the best afterschool programs the even have a martial arts class there. Best school ever

if you have a special needs child DO NOT ENROLL THEM HERE! My child gets homework that is way over her head, she is in second grade and has kindergarten level reading and they still dont work with her on that. Everything is math, math ,math. If you show concern about your child they are very rude. They do not listen or care about what the parent has to say at an iep meeting... the list goes on. This has been so stressful i am considering pulling my child out and home schooling her . I have never seen a school that finds the children and their parents to be irritating, but this one does. Hopefully i can get her into a different school for next year.

I have three children that attend this school. From what i've seen there is a problem with bullying. When I addressed a issue about what has been going on with my child, she was very rude and cold. During an IEP meeting for my child she decided to play on her IPAD then try to come up with solutions to assist the team. I would not recommend children with special needs attend this school. The school is all about the money and not about the needs of the children.
