Front Office is always rude. Not helpful. I don't understand why you would put non friendly, non people person in your front office. If I had another option to send my kids, I would. NOT impressed

most teachers seem to genuinely care about the students' quality of learning, especially with those students who show an effort to learn. There is a strong academic track that is challenging and offers a solid education for students wishing to advance to a UC or other major University. I think PLHS has one of the larger AP course offerings of all San Diego schools.

I like how personable Mr. Becker, the VP's, counselors and coaches are with both the students and parents.

PLHS offers many options for students that want to learn and value academics. I am impressed with the number of AP: and College Level courses that are available, and is one of the main reasons we attend this school. The academic tract is strong and has a healthy level of competition amongst students. Sports programs are of high quality, and offers a well rounded high school experience for those who participate.

I can't say enough horrible things about this school. First of all, my son struggles in math. There are no good math teachers. When my son asks the teacher a question they say look in the book. The book gives 1 example and that's it. He has had some good English teachers. My son is a senior this year and first day of school he doesn't have 3 classes because 3 teachers left the school. Now 3rd week of school and he still doesn't have 2 periods. I've been in constant contact with his counselor and the principal and no response. My son finally talks to his counselor this morning and she tells him that I wrote an offensive, threatening e-mail. I'm livid!! First she should tell my child this and 2nd when she doesn't respond after 20 e-mails I might have been a little angry. I still haven't heard from her. To make matters worst the principal hasn't gotten back to me either. If my son doesn't graduate because of lack of school response that will be horrible. I'm so mad at this school!!! Another thing is drugs are everywhere. Kids have tried to sell drugs to my son. The kids post themselves on istagram, snap chat doing drugs and they think it's cool. I don't see the school doing anything about it. The bullying is awful. Last year a kid was bullying my son for the first few months of school.

My son and I have been happy with PLHS. Students are friendly - bullying is NOT an issue at all. Counselors, teachers and administrators are doing as well as can be expected as their workloads are heavy. Parents need to be proactive and take the lead with their child's education and college planning. Thankfully the internet allows parents and students to get information and resources - gone are the days of being dependent on school counselors.

Can anyone comment on the 4/10 rating and how valid that is from your experience? I see a 97% graduation rate which is phenomenal. Am I missing something about the measurable academic quality of the school? Outlier on last years English testing?

There are some teachers who care about students and students are friendly to each other. Unfortunately, this is the type of school where you have to do online research to get clear answers. There are no regular or intermittent email newsletters or onotifications to parents. My child's counselor is always frazzled, abrasive, and dismissve. She has been this way since his first day of school when we met her. After that meeting and on another ocassion when she met my husband it was apparent this is her method of surviving with her "caseload" of students. Anyway, if you are thinking about sending your child to this school, you really have to stay on your toes and communicate with everyone as frequently as possible or your student's college opportunities may dwindle. You must advocate for your child and they have to learn how to advocate for themselves beacuse once you get a taste of the culture of nonchalance and factory-type processing of students at PLHS, you realize not to count on a partnership between parents and school administrators, counselors, etc. They're too busy to even answer emails.

I am a former PLHS graduate. C/O 1997. I loved my peers and clubs that I belonged to. I had several stand out teachers that really pushed me as a student to think critically, problem solve and be proud of my work. Many of my HS graduate friends went on to UC colleges. I didn't have the money because I had to pay my way through college, perhaps there was ways around it. I ended up at a community college for a few yers, got accepted to CSU San Francisco and ended up going to the Art Institute of CA here in San Diego. I learned many valuable skills at PLHS and believe the curriculum prepared me for college.

Point Loma High School graduates many students that go on to the University of California System, Stanford and other great universities. There is an active parent program which provides support to the Administration. The campus continues to make improvements including recent approval of a master plan for new buildings and sports facility. The football field was recently renovated and a new workout facility was constructed.The PL Baseball field (actually at Dana) is being renovated for synthetic turf and will be ready for the next Season. Former PL Alum and MLB Perfect Game pitcher David Wells is now the head coach. There is great school spirit and a wonderful scholastic program.

My son attended PLHS. He struggled at the beginning, but I always found that teachers, counselors and staff were responsive as long as we communicated what our needs were -- no one just steps in. He found that if he worked hard, was respectful to the teachers and looked for opportunities there were plenty of great things to be found there. The students that don't do well are not putting themselves out front, and their parents don't participate by volunteering and getting to know the teachers -- always a big mistake. PLHS is crowded and has a lot of budget issues, but if you work for them they will work for you and your child. A relatively new principal (2013) is helping things as well. A large number of students are bussed into this school and their parents either cannot, or will not, participate so if you have time and a few extra dollars you can make a huge impact here. We felt it gave our son a terrific foundation for college.

It is impossible to get any communication from the school. The counselors don't return phone calls nor emails and are rarely in the office. The principal, vice principal and technical staff never respond to emails or calls and are never in the office to talk to. Our son had no Spanish teacher for the first 6 weeks and we couldn't get him moved into any other class. Very frustrating trying to deal with this school. I'm not happy with the quality of some of the teachers either. Not a good experience so far for a freshman student.

Reading the comments about athletes. I have not found it to be true that your child can't make it if they didn't start as a freshman; parents don't volunteer; or that grades don't matter if you are an athlete. Maybe in other sports, but not girls volleyball. You try out every year and every year you can be replaced by someone better. Volleyball is very competitive at all schools, and it's this way everywhere. I do agree with the person complaining about how hard it is to get in touch with counselors. It's near impossible. After weeks of emailing and calling and leaving messages with everyone my husband finally took time out of his day to walk into the counseling office so we could get an appointment with our son's counselor. That appointment was supposed to be today, but our son was never called out of class. Very disappointing. There are some really exceptional teachers at PL. If you can excel you will do well here.

Beware Drugs are a major issue at this school. Councillors do not help and Principle and vice principles do nothing.....that's if you can actually get to speak to them. They do not return calls, they clearly are not that concerned or heard it all before. School police are fantastic but they have a hard task ahead of them with little support. Teachers- there are a number of Great teachers so if you can steer your kid in the right direction and keep them aware from the low life then you will be okay. Be realistic with yourself and dont be fooled in to thinking you can handle it. My advice would be to send them else where.
