So far our experience has been underwhelming. School started two weeks ago but theyre not learning anything yet, just going over endless rules. And they dont offer gate for gifted students, just one accelerated math class. My child does like their teachers, at least.

Another thing our first communications from the outgoing principal were all about sixth grade camp the week of September 20th, and the kids were excited for that. However the incoming principal has just announced there will be no sixth grade camp (no explanation) and we did not even get a chance to fundraise to try to make it happen. Its disappointing since my childs peers at higher-income schools will get to go. And it makes me feel less excited about participating in fundraising events for the school since they didnt want use funds for camp.

Combined with the lack of learning and the campus being all torn up from construction, it just hasnt been a great start to the school year for these kids.

My student is starting their second year at Roosevelt. We chose the school because friendships are critical at this age, but we've been continually impressed by what Roosevelt has to offer.

The school underwent major positive change under the previous principal. Now under Principal McGee, Roosevelt seems poised to build on its momentum by expanding its reach and reputation.

The new Media Arts magnet program is woven into academic projects and well-aligned with the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum. Being located in the heart of Balboa Park further exposes students to unique learning opportunities.

Academics at Roosevelt emphasize personal growth, critical thinking, and executive functioning--skills that are essential as kids move into high school and beyond. Students are encouraged to push themselves, reflect on their learning, and build healthy habits.

Programming has grown over the last few years, and Roosevelt truly has something for every student. There are strong athletics options, a robotics program, top-notch arts programming--ranging from publishing and dance to band, orchestra, improv, theatre, and even a contemporary music program--and these enrichment activities are built into the school's extended day programming and available for FREE to all students (thanks to RooFriends, the vibrant parent org on campus). New events are being added every year too. Last year they introduced the Roosevelt International Film Festival (RIFF), which attracted attention from across the district.

My student's teachers have been overwhelmingly kind and compassionate. As is true anywhere, some are stronger instructors or more tech-savvy than others, but across the board it's clear they care deeply and want students to succeed. My student feels safe, supported, and--importantly--happy. It's middle school--kids are figuring themselves out and sometimes things come up--the administration is responsive, thoughtful, and truly focused on helping kids learn from their experiences and grow. At a time when many kids begin to disengage from school, Roosevelt manages to keep the spark alive.

Need more? Campus is finally getting modernization! A brand-new building just opened and I will never look at florescent lighting the same (if you know, you know).

I can't recommend Roosevelt enough; it's a neighborhood school with a lot of heart and a bright future.

There are a lot of fights, and if your son isn't ready for that, you should avoid this school at all costs. I would almost recommend you home school over this school.

I can't fully blame the facility, budget cuts and district mandates are heavily to blame but they do get a mention for incompetency. They never see to have a direct answer for the reasons they do what they do. Bullying is okay here, and special needs kids are almost completely ignored unless they become a problem. I can't find a single redeeming quality about this school.

This school is GREAT! Weve had such a good experience with teachers, staff, other kids and the principal. Steinberger is awesome, strict but kind. Disciplines when needed, but not too harsh. They are under renovation on a few buildings which means it will be even better when done. The programming is great, they have digital band, orchestra, jazz band, theater, all kinds of cool after school programs that are free (sponsored by their parent teacher org). My kid is challenged in class, and learning so much. I think he will be ready for high school when done!

I had 2 daugthers graduated in this school. Both got bullied and ended up with several menthal issues. We were trying to receive IEP for the younger one, but the process become a nightmare for us. They distorted the facts, playing their games and any of school workers including the principal did all to kick her out placing in the worst specific school so we ended up without IEP, school and any support.
Educational part is worst too. They dont help students at all even if somebody really wants help which is rare there cause they kill any motivation to study with their ignoring.

My kids both attend Roosevelt Middle School. It is a great school with teachers who care about the students. The principal is fantastic and has great communication with families. He is very dedicated to his students and attends so many school events, even on weekends. The families are engaged and volunteer their time for the students and the school.

Our two boys went 6-8 grades at Roosevelt. Both had great experiences and learned a lot. They are prepared to excel in high school after attending Roosevelt. The current principal is very engaged, accountable and positive and that trickles down into an overall great environment for students and staff. The school meets challenges as best they can (covid, school threats etc.) with excellent parent communication. The teachers are high quality overall, with the exception that sometimes there are staff challenges and my son had a sub for a long time in one class due to that. But the school did the best they could to actively seek to fill that spot and finally they did. Middle school can be a tough time for kids but Roosevelt made it about as good an experience as it could be in my opinion. Also, tons of extra-curricular options there as well.

My son is wrapping up his 8th-grade year at Roosevelt. We transferred him to Roosevelt (this is our neighborhood school) for 8th grade from a charter school in Point Loma, hoping to find a better academic program and structure, teacher involvement, admin responsiveness, and community culture. Roosevelt Middle School has delivered on all of these things and more!

Principal Steinberger is doing an incredible job. You can tell he cares about every student at Roosevelt, he is responsive to parent / guardians, and he seems to have developed a space for teachers to enjoy their jobs. The teachers have all been excellent and we feel our son has learned and grown so much this year. The students at Roosevelt are such a great group, and the family involvement is awesome. Middle schoolers are going to be wacky teenagers sometimes, so you will get the same type of social challenges at any middle school. Roosevelt really handles these challenges well and the kids here seem as happy as teens can be. Having had kids at two different charter middle schools in San Diego over the years, I will say - these challenges exist everywhere and the important thing is how they are handled.

Roosevelt has a public relations and reputation problem, which I believe - now that I am a Roosevelt parent - is based on issues from years and years ago. The campus looks perfectly fine to me, but FYI it is getting some upgrades starting this year (2023) which will be nice. This is a wonderful school and I am so glad we transferred our student here. He comes home and tells us cool things he learned, can work through challenges, feels he has a strong group of friends, and we feel he is prepared for high school now. We have a 2nd grader, and will most definitely have him attend Roosevelt for 6th - 8th grades.

Roosevelt really has a lot to offer every student. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program is a progressive and rigorous approach to a well-rounded education, and all the teachers are dedicated to IB as well as being experts in their own subjects. My wife and I both have advanced degrees and are demanding of both our kids (who are GATE identified) and their school. The school has exceeded our expectations at every turn.

The administration is fantastically competent, compassionate, and accessible. The principal and vice principal have both been hired within the last two years, and have made some huge changes (as far as I can tell based on conversations with parents of kids who went years ago). The most noticeable changes are in school climate, exemplified by no longer requiring school uniforms, and replacing a more punitive discipline regime with a "restorative justice" approach. The administration and staff, led by Mr. Steinberger, have more than proved their mettle and caring as they have led students and families safely through Pandemic School for the past 2 years. All the parents I talk to are extremely thankful that the RMS administration has been so competent, vigilant, and transparent during this time when parents from so many other schools are frustrated and/or terrified.

One amazing feature of RMS is the FREE After School Enrichment program, run by the parent-led school foundation, Friends of Roosevelt. It includes clubs like Art Studio, Theater, Sports, Improv, Cosplay, Girls in Science, Strategic games, Gender & Sexuality Alliance and many more. Some of the clubs partner with local organizations and businesses like the SD Zoo and Diversionary Theater.

Roosevelt is a socioeconomically and culturally diverse urban middle school that reflects the demographics of mid-city San Diego, and that's one of the reasons I am glad that my kids go to school here. A lot of the more affluent families with highly-educated parents look for ways to avoid Roosevelt because of the perceived challenges of this population; but I'm glad that my kids are in school with their neighbors and that they understand that not every child has the structural advantages they have. That's the kind of education you can't get in a private school or niche charter.

This school has so much to offer if you make the most what they provide students. I have had 2 of my children attend Roosevelt.

It is not common for middle schools to provide course work that counts as high school academic work. I can see why statics would show a large gap between students, because they are not a school that has students all learn at the same rate; they have regular, GATE and GATE Siminar, classes with some integrated. They also have more required academic course work for student, including foreign language.

I did wish that the French teacher communicate with the SD High School of International Studies to better prepare students for their more rigorous Advanced French coursework.

I've been very satisfied with Roosevelt International Middle School for my son. The thought of middle school often strikes fear and anxiety for parents, but I think Roosevelt provides a safe, nurturing place for its students to develop independence, resilience, and a more nuanced world view. My son has been academically challenged with relevant curriculum, balanced use of technology, and consistent self-reflection about his progress. In addition, he has benefited greatly from the diverse student population, the variety of teaching styles, and the opportunities to negotiate the ups and downs of adolescence with the guidance of peers and staff. We feel so fortunate that we have this as our neighborhood school and love that it keeps us civically connected to our community.

My family has had an excellent experience at Roosevelt Middle. While it is not our neighborhood school, we choiced in because we strongly believe in the International Baccalaureate program, their approach to learning, and their focus on global mindedness. Our 3 children have been challenged by excellent teachers, have developed a strong sense of justice and community, and have learned to advocate and speak out. In addition, they have made strong and deep friendships with wonderful kids from great families. We are disappointed to hear parents speaking about the school in derogatory terms. The school's diverse population is what makes it an enriching experience and it's approach to learning is helping to develop kids who are reflective and caring about the world around them. Lastly, the new principal is IB trained, is an excellent listener and a collaborative style leader. I give Roosevelt Middle an A+

As mentioned in the other comments, my son and I do not have a very good experience with this school. My frustrations is only increased now that my child is trying to learn from home without any true resources and without the foundations that he should have. I love the idea of the IB curriculum and feel that if it were implemented correctly that it would put a lot if not all of the students at an advantage over their peers at other schools. Unfortunately, a lot of it is not implemented well at all and students that struggle with staying focused and organized are considered bad kids. My son has also come home upset due to two of his teachers constantly yelling at him and the rest of the class which upsets him greatly. He went on a field trip and was excited during the trip (mind you he has adhd so sometimes struggles with holding himself together but not in any type of destructive way) - his math teacher yelled at him and told him that he was a bad kid and that she would never go on a field trip with him again - and she wonders why even though he struggles in her class he doesn't want to go to tutoring with her. He has gone to tutoring with the other available teacher on a different day and he says its like night and day, but that teacher teaches a different grade and he is only in sixth grade. I truly regret sending him here and wish that I had known how bad this school would be back when there was an opportunity for him to sign up for the choice program for him to go to a different school.

He has some good teachers and at least one really bad teacher (his math teacher is the worst I have ever experienced - even though when I complained about her to staff they acted surprised and tried to tell me what a wonderful teacher she supposedly is even though my son and I have experienced something very different. He hates math thanks to her and it used to be his favorite class so that should tell you enough about her).

My son has ADHD and PTSD and struggles with a lot. I requested that he be given accomodations and that he be evaluated for an IEP or 504 plan and went into the meeting with high hopes. I left that meeting with literally nothing to show for it except that if he were to get an IEP or 504 plan they said they would remove him from all of his seminar and advanced classes (which is discrimination). They said they would do a follow up meeting with me but have not done so and since now the school is closed for the year due to COVID19 they now do not have to. My son is practically drowning and they won't help him and there is only so much I can do from home. He is far from supported at this school and consistently feels frustrated or confused.

My son was actually suspended because another kid hit him repeatedly so he hit him back and went to find a teacher. Well because he hit back he was suspended and was told that he should have just stood there and let the kid hit him. That is probably one of the worst responses that I have ever had.

I think it's a real shame that more local families don't send their kids to this school. I've been there for the past 4 years and have had a great experience. I will have absolutely no qualms about sending my 3rd child there in a few years. I'm very excited by the new principal's enthusiasm! I've had two children at this school who are very different personality- and school skills-wise. They have both thrived under the guidance of passionate and incredibly talented teachers. My oldest child has a 504 plan which was carefully and thoughtfully evaluated each year by teachers and staff which really set her up for success! We have been very happy with our Roosevelt experience!

I have an 8th grader at Roosevelt Middle School and we are so pleased with our experience there. My kid is thriving as a result of the IB program and the Seminar classes. The teachers are amazing and really go above and beyond for the students. My kid is challenged but having fun too. The diversity of the school reflects the diversity of the city which is very important for a well-rounded IB education. The faculty and administration are quick to respond to concerns and implement new ideas from the parents and community. The new music program is fantastic - all students have access to music classes (and free instruments) during the school day. The after-school enrichment programs are great. Next year they will being a whole-site modernization of the campus, so the exterior will reflect all the great things happening inside. We absolutely recommend Roosevelt and are looking forward to sending our younger child there as well!

My son graduated from this school and had a great experience. He was challenged academically, was part of a diverse student body, felt safe, learned independence and time management and was encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities. The principal, Dr. C, is very responsive and thoughtful. The IB program also teaches meaningful, thoughtful learning in global context. The Friends of Roosevelt Foundation is extremely provides great support and communication to parents.

Dr. Casillas acts like she is running a business, not growing human beings. Expectations put on 6th graders are way too high - not just academically, but running from class to class with not enough time, having to keep track of a million books without providing lockers. My daughter got all As and Bs in 6th grade yet she still scored below average on state testing, what gives???

My student has been at Roosevelt for 2 years now, and he really enjoys going there. Since it is an IB school, there are higher expectations in academics and citizenship. Students from all walks of life learn from a rigorous, internationally-renowned curriculum that covers core classes in addition to a secondary language and music/art. My student is academically engaged from the many opportunities to work on individual, inter-disciplinary and collaborative projects throughout the year. He also made some new, wonderful friends. There are extraordinary teachers who inspire and motivate, who genuinely care about learningbut dont always get the recognition they deserve. Wonderful. My daughter attended a k-8 language immersion school through 5th grade and I was really torn by the choice of leaving her there or moving her to a middle school. I wanted her to have access to the wider variety of courses offered at Roosevelt International Middle School, but I worried about removing her from a campus and community she already knew so well. Fortunately, my leap of faith paid off! She quickly made friends during the first few days of school and has been flourishing academically ever since! I also wanted to give a BIG shout out to all of the wonderful 6th grade teachers who she is currently enrolled with. I don't know if any of you will ever read this post, and I won't take the liberty of calling you all out by name, but each of you have made a positive and meaningful difference in our lives. THANK YOU! I can't wait to see what wonderful experiences await her in the 7th and 8th grade...

I hate this school. the teachers don't care about you at all, the whole school is unclean and unsafe. I had a bad panic attack in class and when I politely asked to go outside I was yelled at, embarrassed and threatened with a referral, I ended up running out of the room crying. The IB program does teach us about importent values but it is shoved down our thoughts every day. Our workload is insane, we are all sleep deprived and most of the school is depressed. There has been several occasions were I have pulled all-nighters and still didn't finish all of my work. The reason I didn't give RMS 1 star is because there are about 10 teachers who actually care and teach us about things that matter.

Roosevelt IB Middle School is the Worse School you can choose!!!!
I had two children in this nightmare school. Teachers have lack or poor expectations for students. The High rates of teacher absenteeism makes inconsistent and underuse the teaching. The Administration lacks of interest in work in collaboration with parents. They really make you feel unwelcome. Principal Casillas lack of experience in IB program. Last Principal Cabello and IB Coordinator left school without notice to parents. This is a very unstable school. I am very happy to move my children to a charter from this nightmare school. Plus, the academic performance by the floors.

My 8th grader has enjoyed her 3 years here and has had some really wonderful teachers. It's a large school with a very diverse population and I think she enjoys that experience. The after-school program supported by the YMCA staff and PTSA funds has a lot of options. As a parent, I'm excited about our new principal and the increased engagement with both teachers and parents I've seen. I heard from a teacher last night that he's really enjoying an improvement in the culture among the teachers and collaboration since Dr. Casillas has become principal. I do wish more parents would get involved in their students' education through PTSA and school activities.

My 6th grader is engaged and excited about the projects he is working on. All of the teachers are good, but a few are extraordinary, the kind of teachers you remember for a lifetime. It is a positive and challenging learning environment, the kids are supportive of each other. The after school clubs offer good opportunities to engage with engineering and arts.

I was worried about homework, but my son really doesn't have too much. There is some almost every day, but never too much, at most 1 hr on a heavy day. The math teacher occasionally gives math problems for homework, but the daily homework is a "math reflection:" what did we learn today with 2 examples.

My son comes home every day excited about what he has learned. His teachers are invested and know how to keep the students engaged. It is easy to contact the teachers if there are any issues. This year we have a new principal who is responsive to student and parent needs, and sends out weekly reminders of school events.

My daughter is in 6th grade and so far we LOVE it. As a parent, I was very anxious about the transition from elementary to middle school but we have not had any issues, nor have I heard of any from other parents. All of the kids seem kind and respectful of one another. The teachers are great and really challenge my daughter to do her best. She comes home every day excited about something she learned in class, including P.E.!
We came from an IB elementary school and feel that Roosevelt is doing an excellent job with the program.
The location is amazing. We love that it is right next to the zoo. I think the parking/pick-up/drop-off situation is a little difficult because of that but definitely manageable.
We appreciate that the principal keeps us informed weekly of school news and updates.

My son is in 6th grade and so far his experience has been great! He loves his teachers (especially French & English), who have been easy to contact (if necessary) and are providing a challenging and fun learning environment. The after school activities are diverse and provide a lot of opportunity for the students to pursue various interests. There are some amazing collaborations with the Balboa Park museums and Zoo, which will hopefully expand over the years. He has never felt unsafe at the school. The school provides for an incredibly diverse student body that, I believe, enriches the school experience for my son. The new principal (Fall 2015 is her first year) has been very attentive to hearing about issues from parents (monthly coffee/tea meetings), and is really trying to make the school a better place. One criticism is the buildings are old and could use upgrades, but you can't beat the location - next to the amazing Balboa Park and Zoo! The joint use park built a couple of years ago is a great addition to the campus.

Roosevelt is doing pretty well. It has come up from an API score of 714 in 2009 to around 830 the last two years. Both of our children like it there and are getting A's in advanced placement IB courses, so it works for us. The school district does include some poorer neighborhoods, which unavoidably brings some problems, but the school is doing its best to help those kids and give them a chance to go on to a good program at SD Hi.

I went here 2 years (6th & 7th) and I'm not planning to go for 8th! No way! That school is awful... The principal does not do anything about making the school better! He bought a huge teddy bear statue! Waste of money. They're are cockroaches everywhere and I don't feel like eating there... I feel so unsafe there l. The teachers are rude and strict and are never mostly there! They always hire subtituse and most of them end up stilling and using their phone!

Terrible school - moved to get my students into better district (both my children are GATE). Students must be self motivated or will fall through the cracks. Many disruptive and disrespectful students take away from those who want to learn. The positive programs within Primetime have been cut which leaves little going for this school.

This school should not even get one star it is TERRIBLE. I went here for seventh and eighth grade. In seventh grade it was AMAZING. The principal, Dr. Garcia, was a great leader and really stepped up to the plate. But then the short stick was drawn...literally. The principal is unprofessional; he does not even act as if he cares about the parents, staff, or students, and does not care about anything or anyone else. He took out all sports EXCEPT for cheerleading and exercises control over the students by bribery. My friends who still attend that school tell me that he has fired most of the old staff (which was impeccable) and hired a new staff (which are the exact opposite). I am not sure what motivates this man, but it sure is not the well being of this school and the people in it. The teachers, however, are EXCELLENT and they devote themselves to helping students in any way possible. They go out of their way to help a student succeed, regardles of their race, talent, education level, and backgraound. Though the principal is not very supportive, this does not mean your child will not thrive- it all depends on the person.

this school is horrible...i have attended it for 3 years and this year was my last. It was horrible because the teachers are biased, kids are making out where ever you go, there are 3 pregnant girls, and its just crazy. the only people there that make it a good school are the 8th grade teachers.

This was a great school but the current administration is uninspiring and ineffective. This used to boast one the best after school programs in the district and it has been replaced by something less than daycare. There are bright spots such as the top academic programs, cheer team and music program. However, these programs were mostly due to the work of the previous administration and staff that ran them. Such a shame to see a great school deteriorate because of the current leadership.

This is my son's last year at this school and I think I am going to be probably the most happiest come promotion day. For the past 3 years, I've had nothing but problems with the Principal and several teachers regarding my son. I'm a very involved parent and my goal has always been to work with staff, teachers and administrators to ensure my son is receiving the education he is entitled too. For the first two years, I was only notified when my son was doing poorly in a class by a progress report. The teachers would fail a child without notifying the parents. There needs to be an administrative change at this school, it has been poorly ran for 3 years due to the current Principal. Roosevelt has not successful reached California's standards for the past 3 years, the whole time this new principal came on board. I'm just so glad I have 4 more months until we are done with this school! Please parents do your research before enrolling your child. The presentations they put on to get your child are great but the actual experience there is awful!

I have to admit, this is a great school because I'm a great student. The world language program is divine while my seminar classes are interesting and enjoyable! (Seminar is the highest level, there's normal classes, gate or cluster, and then seminar.) I was even given the choice to take a high school level math class. In addition, the extra curricular programs are amazing! I am currently enrolled in Circle of Friends, ASB, and cheerleading. All these programs are free and so much fun! However, there are the bad kids and teachers that ruin it for everyone. I don't expect to get along with all my teachers but sometimes they're just unreasonable. Also, as mentioned earlier, the PDA enforcement is not strict so you do see a bit of it now and then. So if you're child is sheltered, I would recommend something else, perhaps private school?

It's not a very good school. The curriculum is okay; could be better and the children are very disrespectful. The P.D.A code is horrible! Wherever you walk there's couples making out. I hate this school and I'm glad that it's my last year. Also, the principle made our school stupid and hired a lot of teachers that the students don't like. I wouldn't recommend this school. It was the worst 3 years of my life.

My son has attended this school for 2 years. Being a parent and having open communication with the teachers and administrative staff are very important to me. I get none of that from the teachers. My son was doing poorly in school without my knowledge until the progress reports came home. I contacted the teachers via email and voicemails and had no response. The ones that would respond would email a couple weeks after I had sent mine with follow up emails. I have left messages for the attendance staff and principal through phone and email with no response. In my eyes the staff at this school is very lazy and clearly does not care about the education of their students. If you are a parent about to enroll your child, I would search for other options.
