This is our 3rd failed attempt to place one of our children at this highly ranked local neighborhood school. In our experience, the high rating does not reflect the poor learning environment, the lack of responsiveness when problems arise, and the absolute dismissal by the administrative staff when major concerns are brought to their attention. Here are 3 of our experiences that shaped our decision to use a new school: 1. Class change requests are not approved even for valid reason. Ex. Teacher telling several of her students that she is "taking pictures of (child) being bad" and threatening to send it to their parents. Then denying all parent requests to observe/volunteer in the classroom. The parents were informed by the principal that class change requests were not part of their policy. 2. After our request for an occupational therapy evaluation for choking (as recommended by 3 different therapists and our pediatrician), it was promptly denied by a surprise meeting which was supposed to be a parent teacher conference meeting - we were given no prior notice that this meeting had been changed to an IEP assessment denial meeting. We suspect this impromptu style was intentional. 3. We had hoped our children would associate school with feeling excited about learning, but more days then not, they have come home in tears, discouraged, "feeling stupid", not wanting to go back to school, feeling scared of their teachers, etc. We have found the environment that was created to be hostile, intimidating, unsafe, negligent, and has set back the learning for that year of attendance with each of our 3 attempts. Unfortunately, the best thing we did, was advocate for our children, and change schools.

Sandburg Elementary is an amazing school with a strong sense of community and support! The teachers truly care about their students and maintain great communication with parents who are always informed and involved! Parent participation is highly encouraged, and it really shows in how connected and welcoming the school environment feels.
As a military family, we felt especially welcomed and supported from day one. The staff understands the challenges of moving and transitioning, and they go above and beyond to help new students adjust. Sandburg Elementary is a wonderful, military-friendly school that genuinely values every childs success. We couldnt be happier to be part of this school community!

My child is finishing K and I am so grateful for their teacher, Mrs. Accurso. We were able to participate in school events like the fall carnival, jog-a-thon, scholastic book fair and movie nights. We enjoyed the morning run club for a while, but especially love after school basketball. I love the paw-sitive environment and the encouragement of building a growth mindset!

My son started KG last year and we loved the school from the beginning. Mrs. Bouchard is one of the most amazing teacher and we were lucky to had her in my son's first year at Sandburg. For this year, my son got a teacher who is new to Sandburg so will be too early to review anything about the class. Overall, the school administration tries best to keep family engaged and it is a safe environment for our kids.

This is my 20th year of teaching, and I have taught in several schools. I only taught at Sandburg for 1 year, but it was the best experience in regards to family involvement and a wonderful support staff. The families who volunteer at Sandburg work together as a team to provide the best experiences and memories for all the children. The Sandburg Foundation is amazing! Equally incredible are the support staff on campus. They are so sweet and patient with the students, families and other staff.
The principal is organized, calm, fair, and professional. She's one of the best principals I have worked with, and other teachers speak highly of her as well.
If I had a child, I would definitely send them to Sandburg.

The school offers many different programs for our children: Jog a thon before school, School ochestra, After school enrichment programs, etc.
Teachers and staff are caring and communicating thoroughly. Most kids are well-behaved in school. We recently moved to this school, and our kids were welcomed and the school staff made sure that our kids had a good transition in new setting.

My child was bullied by students in his classroom. Little to nothing was done to stop the offensive behavior.

Experience here has been poor. Most teachers could careless about their students.

They gave up educating during the Coronavirus closure. "Distance learning" a joke. Teacher did not provide any meaningful instruction or guidance. Completely failed as educators.

My daughter has been going here since kindergarten and now she is going into 4th grade. All her teacher's she's had were amazing, very easy to talk to. Anytime I did come across an issue, teacher's and principle was right on top of it.

We had the worst experience with a teacher at Sandburg. The TK/K teacher we ended up with was clearly stressed out and just plain cruel to her students. When we complained to the principal we were told she had tenure and there was nothing he could do.

We left Sandburg after the principal would not support us with regard to the teacher. My son went from a happy, school loving child to an anxious mess every day because of her. She told him he was bad, sat him outside the locked classroom in a laundry basket and regularly told him he wasnt a good child. This woman should not be a teacher and i was told she was removed once prior but reinstated. Shame on Sandburg for keeping her.

My son attended Sandburg k-2nd grade and he thrived there! He had attention issues and the teachers, special ed team and principals were very caring and attentive to his needs! We had Mrs Newell! She was a dream for his first teacher! Mrs Knight, who worked to help our little man over come, and Mrs Masci whom he loved and still talks about. She worked and worked with him to help him along with Mr Kennedy, Ms Ally and the occupational therapy team! I can't for forget running club (run by all parent volunteers) this school has a huge parental involvement and we miss it dearly. Especially now that we're in a different school in South Carolina that does not compare to the joy and compassion we received at Sandburg!

My daughter just finished kindergarten here and we love it. Our teacher, Mrs Remick was wonderful and experienced. Mrs. Remick projects a kindly presence engaging the children in the excitement of learning yet her control over the class is absolute - a perfect balance. My daughter flourished in her class and now reads beginning reader 1 & 2 books by herself. The school also has a great hand on principal, Geof Martin. Mr. Martin is on the grounds greeting parents every morning and afternoon, keeping an eye on things and catching the pulse of the parents. The school's Foundation (a volunteer fundraising organization) funds classes like art, PE etc so they are not lost through budget cuts. Sandburg has an over 900 API score which it accomplished without trading critical thinking for test-focused rote learning. The campus is one of the few with mature trees shading the courtyard. Sandburg Elementary is an exemplary school and I look forward to my daughter's 5th grade graduation with her well-prepared for middle school.

Sandburg is not our neighborhood school. We choiced into Sandburg because of the great reviews. When I went to visit the school 4 years ago, the first thing I noticed about Sandburg Elementary was how warm and inviting the campus is. Clean, neat and with nice open spaces. But, as the years passed, I've also come to love the people at Sandburg. The kids are friendly and respectful which is a reflection on the kind of families we have here. We have great parent involvement. The PTA and Foundation are strong bodies and help support the school in many ways. So, if you are thinking about which school to bring your child, THIS ONE ROCKS! GO TIGERS!
