The principal, counselors, and teachers are working on the ethics of 1950. The policy seems to be teacher versus parent/student. They do not take mental health seriously at all. In fact, they seem to think it is acceptable to read a child's private thoughts regarding their emotional state in front of the entire class. The principal says that since the teacher took responsibility, everything is fine. Parents' requests go ignored and unanswered. Public humiliation is an acceptable form of punishment.

Our daughter has attended her for 2 years, and we are very pleased. The teachers communicate often with class updates and are available with any questions or concerns you may have. I'm surprised by the student reviews of the school, naturally what % of middle school students fully enjoy middle school?

My daughter currently attends this school. Her English isn't very strong yet, so shes also enrolled in ELD classes. That said, she has never had any negative or unsafe experiencesin fact, she really enjoys going to school every day.
Ive seen some negative reviews in the past, and during the principals orientation at the elementary school, there were some parents who raised concerns about bullying and fighting. The principal responded by explaining that, as a public school, it welcomes a wide range of children with different backgrounds and abilities.
There are students who are strong academically and others who struggle, those who can focus easily and those who find it hard, teachers with different teaching stylessome strict, some gentle. The student body is diverse in terms of race, gender, and learning needs.
When it comes down to it, is there really such a thing as a perfect public school that anyone can attend?

Some teachers are fully dedicated to their students, while others fall short. Once the classroom door closes, the responsibility to educate rests with the teacher. Unfortunately, some lack the passion and dedication required for this role. If a teacher is unmotivated and not committed to their students' success, they shouldnt be in this profession, as it is not in the best interest of the children. I noticed one teacher in particular who seemed especially disengaged, However, there are also some outstanding teachers who truly make a positive impact. I deeply appreciate the dedication and effort of those who work hard to support their students. It all echoes throughout the school.

I like being at Standley Middle and think it is a good school, but the people (mostly students) are just not fun to be around. There is A LOT of heavy swearing. Not to mention the occasional fight we hear about (I have never personally been in or seen a fight, but I have heard about them). There is also some "bullying," although it is mostly just mocking/making fun on other students. An example of this is when I was in the boys' locker room and right as we were all about to leave to our next period, an older boy sat on me while I was sitting on a bench and another boy, who was behind me, sprayed a load of what was probably Axe Body Spray on my back. I wouldn't consider that bullying, as it was mostly a joke, but I still didn't appreciate it. Although the people aren't the best, the teachers are very focused on learning, while still managing to sneak in some fun activities.

The school is absolutely horrible. Not only is there around seven big fights every week, but the principal does nothing about it. Death threats, threats, and bullying is the norm here. Unless youre a quiet kid who can stay away from this horrible stuff, your chance of getting jumped is high. The school food is just barely getting standards, and you are extremely lucky if you get a good teacher. Would not recommend for your child.

It's ok at most. The teachers are means except a select few. The food is horrible and does not look but to standards. most homework is unnecessary. they only have Spanish classes which is expected at most schools but with the funding of this school, I expected more options. It is an outdoor school meaning you must walk outside to get to your next class. I thought this was cool when I first got here but now it's proving more problems further into the school year. The weather is bad and we are forced to walk in the rain risking damage to most supplies. Including the computer which costs $100 to repair.

The school has punished us for not even a little bit of kids doing barely anything wrong. The teachers are overall great some are not the best at teaching. The counselors are mediocre to horrible and the amount of fights are a lot but for this small problem, we were extremely punished. It was the last day of school before winter break and then everyone was punished for the doings of only a little bit of people.

This school has fine learning but just really bad punishments I mean there was a crowd of people looking at whats going on in the problem and the teachers look at it as encouragement to interviene the problem and they punished us which are like not moving no library time no basketball and no staying in the bathroom they could have warned us and its not like this happened the first time and they could have seen tat nobody got hurt and stuff it doesn't make sense its just dumb and common sense to realize what actually happened.

If you care about your child, DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO THIS SCHOOL. I went to Standley Middle School, and was horribly verbally and physically bullied by two students for all of eighth gradeand this occurred in front of teachers and staff. They did NOTHING about it. They are lucky I did not become a suicide case. Secondly, all the classes were too easy despite being in GATE or Honors classes. I was horribly ill-equipped for the rigors of high school. This school did irreparable damage to me and my self esteem. As a parent now, I would move or send my kiddo to any charter school before even considering Standley. By all means if you can, AVOID STANDLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL.

Have decided against sending my kids to Standley. My sister's kids attended in 2010. The school had alot of bullying problems. A few kids in our complex that attend Stanley prefer to stay home and work online. Goes to show you that they have alot of issues at the school. No wonder the teachers don't want to come back.

I worked for over a year with the staff at this school in an effort to deal with bullying. No actions were taken, no resolutions created. I removed my daughter from this school and she is much happier at her new school.

Terrible experience. Staff take no action to resolve things. There is no activities to keep kids engaged. Homework is excessive with very little structured support from teachers. A teacher from this school cursed at my child and the school blew it off since he was a "recognized" teacher with some award. Staff at this school tend to follow the policy of not seeing the problems so therefore there are none. This school has a lot of students doing drugs in the bathroom. Kids sneak off to the canyon during school activity times without any staff knowing they are no longer on campus. These are middle school students and the campus is too open allowing for many dangers to come on campus and harm the children while the staff run around blind to all that happens.

unfortunately, we have had a rough go of it at Standley. Over the past 2 years, things seem to have gotten pretty loose. Teachers seems to routinely use foul language with students (playing around with them?), students regularly wear clothing that is out of dress-code, and there doesn't seem to be a culture of respect among the students, or between students and teachers. It's worth my mentioning, as we have seen a significant decline in the quality of this site since Ms Lyon left a few years ago. We're hoping we can get our kids through before it implodes. Disappointing, as it's important to have a strong neighborhood school.

Great school for a new family to the area. Excellent new principle and the school has monthly sessions helping kids focus on developing character and safe learning community. So far the majority of my kid's teachers seem very good.

I was compelled to check the qualifications of the teachers due to several factors. Several seem not to have the appropriate credentials. Check your child's teachers credentials at the California department of education. Google teachers credentials california. They have a look up button. You will be surprised. To teach 7th and 8th you need a single subject in the subject you are teaching. To teach 6th you can have the elementary only. Let make sure the administration puts the correct teachers in your child classroom.

One of the teachers this year teaches 6th & 7th grade & 7th grade seminar. This is incredibly inconvenient because the teacher cannot focus and/or create different lesson plans for their classes, additionally the teacher lives far away so when the kids are sitting in their class, and while the students are working she is eating breakfast, I find this to be disturbing. The 6th grade class is practically doing the same work as the 7th graders except with different materials The 7th grade class is practically reading and doing the same thing as the seminar students The seminar students ask for a better & different lesson plan and are neglected because "the teacher is too busy" Also, someone told me that the teacher does not except late work AT ALL to create a better lesson plan, but I highly doubt this, and also, a bit back, the kids were assigned to make a plot diagram of the Superbowl, I don't think she realizes that not everyone is athletic and/or plays sports The administration is really awful and the school is flooded with students with almost 40 students per class with the teacher working 5/6 periods a day

Standely, like every other middle school, has it's challenges. However, our family has had a positive experience. Their seminar track was very thorough, however my 'non-seminar' children really enjoy their experience at Standley too. With the exception of a couple, my children enjoyed their teachers. My children were choiced in so friendships were more difficult. However being a middle school student is a tricky time in the best of circumstances, and they over came this. I was not a fan of the principal last year yet she was a vast improvement over her predecessor. Over all this school is solid academically, has caring teachers, and a supportive community of parents. We've been happy here.

This school was absolutely terrible for me. I have ran into a bunch of bullying issues, and the counselor and teachers have done nothing about it. Even though the teachers were very kind and helpful I hated everyday I went there. I have been to six different schools throughout my entire education and that one school was the worst by far.

As a parent I am very discouraged with Standley. The teachers do not return emails. The communications between the VP and counselor leave a lot to be desired. The right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. I wish I would have pulled my child in December and sent them to another school. The school is a joke and a total waste of time. The only thing they care about is the paycheck... Think long and hard before sending your child here!

I have to chuckle at the reviews. Most if not all of the teachers are quite accessible. Parents have good accessibility to both school staff and the district office. Principal Lyon has worked hard to reduce campus student population to a reasonable "by design" size over the last several years. Both of our children have attended Standley. Both children have developed great friends as well as solid academic relationships with instructors.

I AM A STUDENT OF THIS SCHOOL. And I would like to say that this school has its ups and downs. It is culturally diverse and has almost no bullying issues but, the principal is horribly incompetent, some teachers have no control over classes and there is very little teacher-parent communication. The only way my parents can quickly access my grades is through a website only introduced this year. And the staff is mostly burnt out. I often feel depressed when I leave school because the teachers have no control over classes and I can't recieve the full lesson nor can I fully understand it. I would not recommend this school to parents who want their children to truly strive in school.

WE feel a desperate need to get out of this school! Its such a scary feeling to know our son goes here. His English teacher didn't assign a book to read until December. Then she assigned a Christian-based book. I read a few paragraphs and realized, besides the [small] non-secular problem, that this is not well-written literature. If he emulates this, he will be writing long 1 sentence paragraphs...! Since the 8th grade testing is not being done this year, I think the English teacher is slacking, a lot.

Standley middle school is a horrible school. The education is ok but not very good. The teachers are fine but only a few are good or extraordinary. It's a very boring school and they have made some unnecesary changes in the past year. They need to make a better administration. The principal is not very good and quite annoying. The vice principal, Mr. Pearson, is to concerned And makes false accusations. However the new vice principal, Mr. Lee, is awesome. He is verry friendly and makes sure you are on a good path. If I ever had any problems I would go to him. These are the reasons I'm rating it one star. The only good part of the school is Mr. Lee.

I agree with some of the other reviews about poor administration. My child is in eighth grade and throughout all three years they have not managed to determine the number of kids they will have enrolled come fall. This results in a constant change of schedules, teachers coming and going, and a "back to school night" that doesn't occur until the end of October. I spent many hours volunteering at my child's elementary school and enjoyed it immensely. Due to poor administration the principal has managed to disenchant the parents to the point where we don't want to volunteer. They seem more concerned with dress code violations and squashing any individuality at the school that education quality. Stanley Middle School is the weak link in an otherwise wonderful UC school experience. A new principal is desperately needed here.

My daughter just started the 7th grade here. In comparisons to her previous school, this place is hands down a breath of fresh air! It feels so good to see my daughter happy to go to school. Bullying was a major problem in her old school and here there is none, at least not for my daughter. The school is culturally diverse which I think is a good thing. What I don't like is that they have changed her schedule numerous times, the teachers do not grade my daughters work...they only check that she did the assignment but she gets zero feedback. I think this can hurt her in the long run especially during tests. The tardy policy is very strict but I suppose that is a good thing. Overall the school is good but I see room for improvement.

41 kids in a classroom? Really?? This same thing happened last year. Kids had to run to class to get a seat. Not a good seat. A seat. Standley's so called leadership solved the problem by issuing all new schedules to every student several MONTHS into the school year. You know, with all the planning days, half days, conference days, vacation days, and a three month summer, I think the administration just learns to duck it's responsibilities. In the end, the only truth is the god given right to be lazy and ineffective.

Poor management and administration. This school could not get all the students in their classes on the first day of the school. Many students could not get their schedules on time. Both Parents and students had to wait hours just to get their schedules. Parents and students were deeply disappointed by the school due to poor management by the school.

My cousins say this used to be an awesome school. I go there, this is not what it is now. We call the principal Tyrant Lyon, cuz that is her. This principal has taken away the fun, being with your b.f.f.'s, Valentines Day, Halloween, Boomers & Dances. She doesn't understand us or like us. She took everyone's valentines stuff away and put it in her office. She HATES us!

From conversations with other students that go to Standley it seems as if the only good part about this school is the GATE/seminar program. I am in it and so far it's been great for me. The teachers have helped me very much throughout the years. If your son or daughter doesn't make the GATE/Seminar program, although, I advise you not to send your son/daughter here because it seems like the non-GATE students have a bad time dealing with the teachers and feel like they're surrounded in an uncomfortable environment.

An exceptionally dysfunctional school. The principal is not competent and not trustworthy. I had a private conversation with the principal criticizing a staff member and the staff member then repeated the conversation to me verbatim. Teacher quality is highly variable. Teachers have 4 classes/day out of 6 and a significant population of teachers are burnt out. Many are not specialists in their subject (e.g. teachers with an English degree teaching science). Struggling kids are neglected and fail. When I met with teachers, they knew my child was having problems completing or understanding the classwork, but never relayed the information. Even during scheduled parent-teacher conference weeks when these are supposed to rectify this, rarely do teachers contact parents. They often do not show up for their tutoring time or alert students when they have meetings during their tutoring time, especially mornings. Some teachers have very poor websites and the principal or VPs blame the teachers union rules for being unable to make the teachers fix or learn how to do so. Kids must wear their IDs around their necks all the time, a misguided time wasting rule instead of focusing on teaching.

My school is Standley, and i am a student. I think there are alot of things wrong with this school and i wish the teachers would actually listen to the students suggestions. Yes, there is a comment box, but not one of those serious comments actually become something that could change any single part in Standley. The staff doesn't listen. I, as a member of the expansive student body, am only asking to be heard. i also would like SOMEONE to realize that the people that are being sent to the office and given referalls aren't being changed by it. All our school does is give up and expel them while they should be thinking of ways(other than Sea-hawk Sessions, which DOES NOT WORK, people are making the good decisions of their own accord) to help the students make the right decisions and not choose to do things that don't help, just hurt. So it seems most parents hate or love Stanley......at any school one will have issues. I will not tell you about the positive but what I will tell you is why people see the native & this may explain all the one star ratings. One parent writes of a known bully who the principal allowed to read the graduation speech. This parent is only venting and failed to include that their daughter was suspended supported by school cameras. Further the principal does not chose the speech writer & reader but a panel of 7 teacher (none of which are the principal). The speech reader this yr is loved by the majority of her piers and weighs in at 120lb 5 feet and labeling an outstanding person a bully is sad. Parents blame everyone for their failures when they have no clue and seems that they are manipulated by these little ones. Math is difficult but in any good HS it is harder. We had to use tutoring to get our star reader to pass math.

I used to go to this school when it was still Jr. High and it was a great school back then, so, i figured if I put my daughter here, she would have somewhat of the same experience...well, boy was I mistaken. My daughter struggles with school and right away the teachers just said she was lazy and was seen as a target. I asked for an IEP test and was told I needed to talk to my doctor??..Teachers here don't know how to talk to the kids, or parents, yet they expect respect and they do not lead by example. The staff there doesn't know how to deal with certain issues. Just because this school is in La Jolla, doesn't mean it's a good school. They were also under review not too long ago...and it was for a reason. I am proud and relieved to say that my daughter will NOT be attending this school next year. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT bring your children here.

I understand that middle school can be a difficult time for kids and a challenge for educators. But the administration at this school is the epitomy of apathy. The Principal refuses to address important issue like bullying and other bad behavior to the point that it takes threats of legal action for her to do her job. We were appauled to learn recently that a known bully was given the honor of making a speech at the 8th grade promotion ceremony next week, because she won a speech writing contest. Ms. Lyons promotes bad behavior and than grandstands when she finally takes action to advise parents about the bullying that is taking place on her campus that she has been told about for months. I would say this is a pathetic display of leadership. This has been the worst 3 years of my daughters life and we are so grateful that its almost over. I would advise you don't walk away from sending your child to Standley Middle School, run as fast and as far as you can.

A negative and disorganized school that performs well below expectations. Staff are not racist but can be rude, condescending and obstructive with any parent. Parents volunteers who were active in elementary school often stop helping out when they start to feel their children are treated unfairly. The feeder elementary and high schools are high performing yet Standley was classed as 'failing' for three years and barely escaped this year - last test scores are still far short and NOT 'out of this world'. Professional behavior, basic skills and teaching effort in almost 1/3 of the staff is lacking. I have seen staff responsible for student injuries, bring replica weapons into school, blatant failures to grade or demonstrate any records of student work, failures to show up for parent meetings.. If this were your child's behavior it would soon be a suspension or worse but the Principal simply refuses to acknowledge problems. A letter yesterday detailed how graduating 8th graders with low academic or citizenship scores will be prohibited from attending the graduation ceremony. All these kids should be celebrated but the final memory of Standley will be negativity and discrimination.

The way math is taught in this school (district?) is the most convoluted mess I have ever seen. I can not even put into words how both my child and myself have come to HATE this subject now. I realize that once summer starts I will be entirely reteaching this whole subject to my child in an orderly and logical progression using workbooks as it seems this subject at the school is all over the place and hardly uses the book on most occasions. To many handouts without answers and not enough intervention to determine exactly how well a student is doing at understanding the material, whatever that my be at times. Makes me question if I should send another child to this school or just relocate instead.

This school has a Three Strike & You re Out rule.(A punishment program regarding unfinished homework assignments) and the staff are forcing students (who did not complete and/or turn in a homework assignment or packet) to make a phone call home (while school is in session) and read (from a script written by the school staff) a VERY HUMILIATING speech to their parents; (in short) telling them how sorry they are for letting them down & not living up to their standards and expectations, & so on. By the third (strike) time not completing a homework assignment, the student not only has to make the (humiliating speech) call home, they also must have a meeting with the school s VP 5 days of lunch detention or one day of Wednesday school. This happens even if the student has been out sick and has quite a bit of homework to catch up on. I m sorry but, What s Up !! Is this practice of student humiliation REALLY necessary; I think NOT ??!! But then again . . . Who am I to question this school s disciplinary actions; I m just another parent; right ?!

Standley Middle School is by far the worst school I have ever been to. The school is very poor and unorganized. They say that it is not their fault they are poor but because the funding is bad. However, they spend their money very poorly spending money on textbooks and other things that are almost never used throughout the year. The schedules are also very unorganized, and are always wrong and have to be changed 2 or 3 times. The staff and teachers also fail at controlling the kids and most of them are very racist and constantly say inappropriate things. The school is very unsanitary, as there is gum all over the floor, under the desks, and even under the chairs. The principal does not even accept parents' requests for changing their kids' classes. The cafeteria lunch menu is also poorly designed because they are limited to each item to often vegetarians starve. I went to Standley for an unfortunate 3 years. Take my advice and do NOT go to Standley.

There is quite a bit of racism at Standley Middle School. There also seems to be a problem with bullying that the administration tolerates. It appears that the staff has difficulties controlling the behavioral problems of the students. My child has been bullied repeatedly at Standley and the staff chooses to look the other way.

This is the most awesome school i ever seen even my kids are very smart and the GATE program helped them to go to higher level classes so I say that this is the best school I ever seen

I think Standley is an awesome school. I sent both my kids to Standley after they attended private school. Standley challenged and supported them both! Principal Lyon and staff are the best! TK
