School looks nice now that they rebuilt it, but don't let it fool you. Unfortunately the school is underfunded, so there are way too many students per class. There is a heavy grading curve where a 50% will get your student a C. IEP is absolutely useless as they won't help your child even when their grades are clearly suffering. They're okay with letting many students slip through the cracks. They have very little programs. Teachers upload grades late or follow the IEP. They only use the Powerschool portal and there is virtually no communication from teachers. However the school will SOMETIMES post to their Facebook group for school updates and events. They provide laptops for schoolwork and heavily rely on it. If you ask them for help for your child they will say they have too many kids. If you have a child with a elarning disability, steer clear or get yourself an advocate.

I am a substitute teacher, and recently had a single day assignment at this school. Let me start off by saying that I am a fully credentialed teacher, and have subbed at the vast majority of middle schools within San Diego Unified. My experience at this school was nothing short of shocking. Every school no matter where you go has the classroom "handfuls," but at this school these students have zero respect for adults and lie to teachers like it's a knee jerk reaction. Very sad state of affairs. Apparently there are no consequences at this school, and you can tell that from the attitude of the trouble makers. It's probably a school that subscribes to the notion of "restorative justice." It's sad that the school lets the classroom trouble makers ruin the educational experiences of the majority of students who genuinely appreciate the value of education. The funny thing is that I had subbed at Mann Middle School down the street the day before, and it was a night and day difference. Like I tell people all the time, the atmosphere of the school dictates everything. From the administrators, to the resource assistants, and teachers. If everyone isn't on the same page, then the students will suffer!

I'm very concerned about sending my 6th grader to this school. He's a respectful, funny, all sports loving kid. I don't hear anything positive about Wilson from adults and kids. We live a couple blocks from there and he has a few close friends going also.
Any advice?

There are some amazing teachers at Wilson Middle School who go out of their way to assist anyone who asks for help. Staff make a special effort to learn a family's unique situations. Wilson also has two wonderful mentors (home-school liaisons), student advocate/counselors that meet with students individually, and lots of after-school homework help offered by teachers. This is a tough neighborhood, but most students do the work and are prepared for high school when they leave Wilson.

I went to this school for 7th grade and I have to say that this is the worst school ever. There are only 4 periods a day, which I have never heard of. The teachers are okay but the students are a huge problem. I have never went to a school where the students had bad attitudes and that don't follow rules. I have seen some students smoke at the school too. There are only like three electives at this school which sucks. When I first came to this school, I thought this was the most ghetto school I have ever been to. Parents, this is a warning. DO NOT enroll your child at this school. I recommend that you go to Mann Middle not that far away if you have a car.

I was a former student at Wilson Middle School and I am now going to be a first-year student at a University. I was very happy to have been able to attend this school despite all the negative reviews or should I say "rumors". The rumors goes along the line of depicting this school to be filled with disrespectful students, horrible teachers, gang violence, and etc. Well, sure the school does contain some of the listed items above but then again which school doesn't? Every school will always have their bad crops so you really can't judge a school by observing a particular group of students/teachers. With that being said, to parents that are considering whether or not to send their kids here: it all comes down to your child. If the child have a good strong grip on his/her head which means they have the ability to make positive and good choices for his/herself instead of following other negative actions that they might see around them then there really isn't anything to worry about. As a reminder, education is education and it is the same everywhere else. Don't criticize this school's teaching abilities and reputation because of some students; they aren't the ones teaching your child.

i'm a student and this is what i've observed here at Wilson pros: this school has an opportunity to go to Washington D.C cons: -students are VERY disrespectful -limited teachers -teachers don't enforce school rules very well -there is a drug abuse problem
