Alamosa Park Elementary School

As we walk to and from school with so many other families, play at the park after school with friends, or grab an ice cream cone from the ice cream truck, I’m often reminded that Alamosa Park Elementary School is truly something special. All three of my children have been blessed with incredible teachers who have cared deeply for them and invested time and attention in the areas where they needed to grow. The school also has an outstanding foundation and PTA who work tirelessly to create meaningful assemblies, events, and field trips for the kids, while continually supporting teachers and classrooms. The families are wonderful as well, and our kids have made lasting friendships. These years will always hold a special place in our hearts and will be remembered fondly. If you’re new to the neighborhood or looking for an exceptional elementary school, we could not recommend Alamosa Park enough.

Overall, we had a good experience at Alamosa this year. My child enjoyed going to school most days and felt supported by staff and the teacher. I was disappointed that the teacher didn’t believe my child when they reported being given a diagnosis that affects their school and interpersonal performance. This didn’t affect my child’s overall experience but did have some negative lasting affects. I hope this doesn’t happen to other kids in the future and that the school continues to enthusiastically support each child’s unique needs and celebrate their unique skills.

My child rarely had homework because Required work was mostly completed at school. The children were assigned reading every day, which wasn’t a problem for my child. I loved the fact that there was time and space for the children to complete work at school so that they could have a break from academics and engage in other fun and important activities in the afternoon.

My child loved the assigned teacher and this helped raise their interest in and commitment to their schoolwork.

I really appreciated the Principal this year, Kyle Ruggles. He is enthusiastic, welcoming, and has very good rapport with the kids. My child felt cared for and important at the school and that made a big difference.

While my child wasn’t on an IEP or need educational support, they have had testing and have a diagnosis that does affect their ability to perform and do well in school. Unfortunately, because the unique way that their symptoms presented themselves, the teacher didn’t initially believe that they had a diagnosis. In fact, they told my child that they didn’t have the diagnosis because other children’s symptoms looked different and more typical. This incorrect denial by the teacher affected my child and their willingness to talk about their challenges in the future. Whether a child has an IEP or needs accomodations or not, I believe that teachers and administration should be respectful and supportive of each child’s unique needs. When a child and / or parent gives information about a child’s needs, I think they should give them the benefit of the doubt, unless they have testing results or other professional opinions which state to the contrary.

I’m really not sure if this is addressed successfully in the school. My child reported that there was no physical bullying happening to their knowledge. They did talk about interpersonal things that happened during the school year which could have been considered bullying; such as name calling, excluding and talking badly about other children, texting mean things about or to someone else, etc.). I don’t know if it occurred to the degree that would be considered bullying.

Principal is wonderful. She has only been there for around 2 years but I hear she has done awesome things to improve the school.

When I volunteer I see children being pulled out for individual attention by certified teachers so I know they are doing the right thing for them. I also spend a lot of time with students the teachers deems one on one instruction.

I personally have never seen any bullying at Alamosa Park school so I would have to say that it seems to be effective.

My grandson is only in kindergarten but I volunteer at this school. His homework is age appropriate and consists mostly of reading.

Kids all seem to love their teachers and going to school which is a barometer on well the staff is doing their job.

This is a small neighborhood school, not a magnet school so most of the students live around the area. Parking is a big problem but parents manage to attend school functions and drop/pickups daily. Everyone seems pleased about the school so I think the principal and staff have effectively addressed any problems this school may have had in the past. 5 STARS!

My son is in Grade 1 and absolutely loves his teacher. He started at Alamosa in elementary and his teacher then too was fantastic. He loves the interaction, running club and we're also big fan's of the AM/PM program. Love the environment for our son.

Everyone is so willing to help any student. I came from Chula Vista haborside elementary they told me my son was slow .. Came here two years ago he had dyslexia which I told haborside but they never did anything and here at alamosa they changed his world. Helped my son read and write made him felt like he was the smartest boy ever .. Best school ever

As a parent with two kids at this school, Alamosa leaves a lot to be desired academically and in terms of parent involvement. The former principal was arrogant and cold to parents. The new proncipal is hopelessly inexperienced and incompetent. Learning supports for my children are minimal. Opportunities to volunteer are limited to a price legend few parents. The community this school serves is great; VUSD is squandering an opportunity to have a school that shines because VUSD is unable to provide the type of leadership this school deserves.

A former kid at this school, most of the students were downright RUDE. But the principal is very nice. But compared to Casita Center, this school wasn't very tiny. It's a good school, but not as good as the school I'm in right now.

I personally liked "Alamosa Idol" the anual talent show where there are no winners but everyone gets a chance to show off their secret or not secret talents if they choose to. Another thing about Alamosa Park is the "Hawk Run," a fundraiser that takes place every other year at the park next to the school. You can run laps to help raise money for your school. Overall, I Iiked my experience at Alamosa Park Elementary School and have no doubt that your child would either.
