I do not recommend this school to families of Black, Ethiopian, or African descent. Principal Kim James does not uphold Catholic values when it comes to treating all children and families with dignity and respect. Children of Black, Ethiopian, and African descent are unfairly labeled as troublemakers, even when their behavior does not warrant such treatment, and they are singled out in ways that are harmful and stigmatizing. Families from these backgrounds are made to feel unwelcome and less valued in this community. No child should ever have their race or ethnicity used as a reason to feel “less than,” especially in a school that claims to be guided by faith and Catholic values. A principal who does not view all children as equal and valuable based on their skin color should hold no position of leadership in a Catholic school.

I hope the San Diego Catholic Diocese looks into these claims and makes changes to ensure better leadership when hiring principals. If we are to uphold the Gospel and spread God’s love, we must remember: God loves all His children. That is the foundation on which this school’s leadership should stand.

We transferred to Saint Didacus late in the school year. We had a nightmarish bullying issue at a charter school, and I needed to pull my son out immediately. Saint Didacus welcomed us in with open arms, even though we aren't practicing Catholics. I personally had moved away from the church long ago, but Saint Didacus did not make our family feel excluded in any way. My son is thoroughly enjoying his religious studies and learning about Catholicism. It's opening him up to religion in a way his father and I hadn't provided. And no matter what your beliefs, anyone can benefit from learning how to be kind and compassionate to others, and to be of service to the community. That kind of education is what is lacking in public schools, in my personal experience. The school itself has a lot of character and soul because it has been in Normal Heights for decades and decades. There's an impressive library, an auditorium, a dedicated art room, a science lab, and a great outdoor field for play and exercise. The curriculum seems effective and challenging, and my son says it compares academically to his previous high-performing Charter school. Even though we haven't been there a full year, I can say the teachers at Saint Didacus are immensely kind and clearly care about the students, and the principal is wonderful and engaging. This is significantly different than our previous experience. Most importantly, I know my son is safe and happy when I drop him off in the morning,

We have been a part of the St. Didacus family since 1986. The key word is "family". Both my kids went through for the full 9 years K-8 and did amazing. They were fully prepared when they went on to St. Augustine and OLP. Then on to college where they both graduated Summa Cum Laude. The teachers were amazing. We did have our share of not so great Principals back in the 90's but things have improved since. Now we are starting a new generation of "Didakids" with my two granddaughters who at the present time are in Preschool and 1st grade. They also are flourishing and loving their time there. The staff is loving and caring and brings out the best in the kids that go there. Our kids didn't g to preschool but our granddaughters did and it has been the best introduction to this school. Miss Sophia and Miss Remy are so loving that they enjoyed going to school and did well. Academically, I am amazed at the stuff they have been doing in Kinder and 1st grade. The teachers just seem to make learning fun. I highly recommend this school to any family looking for a loving and very educational environment.

This school has been an absolute life-saver during COVID. As far as my family is concerned, the staff are frontline heroes. During this unprecedented pandemic, they pivoted to distance learning with ease and got the kids back in the classroom in a safe, highly effective manner. My family is forever grateful and will sing the praises of St. Didacus school for life.

My daughter was transitioned from SDUSD and now she is flourishing. We love the small class sizes and care that the teachers and staff take to education. They seek solutions to problems, which is the highest honor I can think of.

We transitioned here this year from SDUSD and we love it. Our son is absolutely thriving under the small class sizes and great instruction. He is busy all day and really learning a lot. The teachers and staff are all so caring. My son loved Math before but the curriculum and instruction for Math has made him absolutely love it. The staff has been amazing about COVID guidelines and keeping the kids screened and protected. I love that they have real PE, Science, Music and Technology with a dedicated teacher so that they learn about transitioning as well and it breaks there day up. The level of prep and structure around the daily and weekly assignments is very organized. The kids here are all happy and the teachers are kind and caring.

We moved both of our children to this school (Preschool & 2nd grade). It has been one of the best decisions we've ever made. The school staff from Secretary, Teachers to Principal are kind, professional, honest and full of enthusiasm. They are very organized and communicate well. Both of our children love going to school everyday.

I have sent multiple children to this school over many years. When I enrolled my first child in Saint Didacus I can honestly say I was proud to send them here. Many years later, my youngest child is still attending the school and I no longer share this feeling of pride. I chose to send my children to a private catholic school because I believed that it was a place where they could have an open discussion about their faith, and have a slightly superior education to that of a public school. Over the past few years the school has been experiencing a steady decline in the quality of education and guidance they claim to offer their students. I believe this decline can be directly traced back to the leadership of the school. The key to a great school is open communication, but this is something that is desperately lacking from Saint Didacus. When you, as a parent of a student, have a problem regarding the school you should feel comfortable bringing up said problem with the principal, but I know many parents that have done so with no avail. Mrs. Dean, the current principal, is very defensive when presented with an issue, thus only allowing her what he wants to hear. This is not an efficient way to improve a school. The enrollment has been down for many years partly due to fewer parent enrolling their kids in private school, but more importantly the bad reputation the school has among parent and student alumni. The final straw that led me to leaving this review was their effort to combat this bad reputation. Instead of fixing the problems, they are now bribing the parents to leave a positive review in exchange for one service hour towards their required volunteer hours. My family and I are finished with this school, and I do not regret it at all. This is not an establishment fit to be teaching and guiding the youth in academics or religion.

I have two sons that have attended St. Didacus. My Eldest son graduated from St. Didacus and is extremely prepared for high school. The school offers advance math for 6th-8rd students who test into it; because of this my son was able to take Integrated II as a freshman. My youngest is currently still attending. I can tell you that the teachers really care that their students succeed in their studies and work hard to prepare them for high school. The community at St. Didacus is very involved and welcoming to all. I'm very happy with the choice we made to send our children to this school. The small class size, teacher's enthusiasm for teaching, and the welcoming community has really made a positive impact on my children's education.

Even though she is a reletively new principal, you see her love for the community, and her striving to always put the children first.. in every decision she makes.

For about 17 years it was great. The last 5 were really tough. My three older children told me to move the others without question. My wife and I decieded the school was to important to leave so we tried to make a difference. We are still loyal to the school, parents, teachers and kids and will do all we can do to help. But currently we are actually pretty happy that we are no longer there. My kids are better off and that is most important.

Principle does not allow teachers to teach. She gets involved by dictating if grade average is to high in the classroom and forces teachers to adjust grades. Could it be that the teacher is just doing a good job teaching?

Teachers have heart and care about the kids. There have been five teachers let go in a year. With this being said teachers have to watch their back and cannot afford to speak up if their opinion is different than the principles. In my line of work I hire and fire a lot of personel. If the people I hire do not succeed I see it as a direct reflection of me not being able to give them the tools they need to succeed. Leadership is pretty important. When there is a lack there of people act in fear.

Believe that family is the strongest developer of charactor. When the leadership does not represent fair, honest, christian behavior it is tough to pass it on to students. She has walked into a classroom and told kids that they used to be good kids but what happened to you? Signs up limiting where kids can go because when she was a student she went to those areas and got in trouble. If something happens a rule is created rather than addressing the issue. So lots of rules because she does not know how to handle one on one issues with families.

Principle went to school as a child, was hired directly out of high school, was a PE instructor while earning her degree in physical education, was a third grade teacher for 20 years, assistant principle for several years and passed up for the possition of principle serveral times. Diocese requires 5 years experience in administration or a Masters degree. The old principle passed unexpectedly. Rather than conducting an open search they appointed this person to the position. A real shame that a true talant search was not conducted. Between her and the last principle the enrollement has dropped from 280 children to 196 in about 5 years. There is now a 200k budget deficit and if you look at the enrollement trends it will at mininmum be 350k in three years. They do have a 2.5 million endowment and I understand another person may have added to this endowment recently. The principle has stated that as long as it last her 10 more years it is ok. Runs the school as she did her third grade class. Parents and Teachers are not third graders and should be treated differently. When your children graduated her class it was ok because they knew how to deal with adversity, but as the principle the school needs to deal with the adversity. To worried about hair cuts to focus on the true operation of the school. No business expense and limited life experiences. Tuition is cheap thou. They claim that enrollement is down throughout, however, do a little research and you will find that there are plenty of schools that are full and the common denominator is strong leadership. I would suggest doing your homework and looking. The unfortunate part is that families that have 1-2 years left to graduation feel trapped to continue for the stability of their children. With all of this being said the true culpret are those who are not managing the school sites and allow the "peter principle" to prevail. Not good for kids, or the future success of Catholic Schools.

Catholic Schools do not have the resources to address out of the box learning issues. Throughout the years we have went outside to ensure that our kids have gotten what they needed. There are however teachers that absolutly do what they can to be part of solutions rather than problems.

Love St. Didacus. Have two other private Catholic schools within 5 miles of our house, not to mention a top public school a mile away, yet we drive an extra 12 miles every day so our daughters can attend this school.

Daughter is in kindergarten and the assigned homework is mean to compliment in class lessons and rarely exceeds 15 min each night. Also, strong focus on reading and encouraging parents to read to our kids.

There is a strong commitment to having a Catholic influence at the school. This past year, our school lost Mrs. Tollefson. The staff continued on under the guidance of Mrs. Dean. As interim principal, she pulled the staff, students, and parents together for a very successful year. The Diocese chose Mrs. Dean as the permanent principal, and she is doing a terrific job. I see all of the skills that she utilizes to move this school in a positive direction. Mrs. Dean is a Christ-centered person that has an open door policy to everyone. Please give her a chance before judging her or the school. I believe that you will be greatly impressed by her and the staff. We put our students at the top of our priority list.

Every school could improve in this area because schools are serving a more diverse population every year. What I love about this school is its multi-cultural diversity. As far addressing learning differences, the classes are small, and teachers work in small group and individual settings. In the upper grades, they are working each day to address this issue.

Bullying is not tolerated in any form. The school works hard in developing a church family. I am especially impressed with our sports coach who oversees the students at PE and recess. He is a great role model and talks with the students the second a situation arises. Thank you coach. The principal is exactly the same in dealing with bullying. Our children's teachers at St.Didacus were family! They went out of their way to give extra support when needed. Our children respected and learned such important, valuable skills from every single one. Not to say that we didn't disagree at times, but when we did, we went to the teacher and felt listened too .. we felt our children's best interest was always at the forefront of any decisions.

Although private schools cannot possibly have the same resources as public schools, the teachers and staff at St. Didacus do everything they possibly can to engage and encourage ALL learning styles. As an educator, I feel this word is so misused. As a parent if I "think" my child is being bullied, I would go to the principal immediately. Parents are the primary educators of their children, they are the first in the stream of responsibility for their child, the school is there to help and support the parent. So many times a parent complains to other parents,however they never say a word to administration, honesty and communication is so valuable!. St. Didacus, does not tolerate bullying , Jesus is at the center of this school.. the catholicity is evident among this school family.

My husband and I visited many Catholic schools , the minute we walked in the doors of St.Didacus we just knew that this school would be the place that would help us form Christ like children, with high moral values, integrity, and a love for learning. I wish we had pulled out several years ago but we kept hoping to would get better. My son does like it here and will not be happy when we pull out but I don't see any way to continue here. If you are considering this school please talk to other parents before committing. I do not recommend this school at all.

A lot of the homework my children bring home is just busy work. Sometimes they have work to do that they haven't even covered in class yet so my husband and I have to spend hours teaching them in the evening to get them through the homework.

There is no additional assistance for children with learning differences as there is literally no available staff to support them. There is a state funded person who spends up to 15 minutes a week with a child who needs help.

We have seen over the years several instances of bullying and nothing is ever done. Now one of my children is suffering at the hands to bullies and nothing is being done to help me tackle the situation. It is heart breaking to see your child suffer and get no support.

In my class there was one girl who was bullied by some other students but the teachers would always take time of their own to try and prevent further events like that. There was even a counselor who would help kids work through their differences together.

I attended this school from preschool to 7th grade. The fundamental education that I received was crucial to who I am today. The friendships I made here are strong till this day. Almost every teacher was very understanding and supportive in every situation. I can admit the principal that was hired after mrs. lacosta had to leave was the worst thing that could've happened to the school but before her I could sincerely say BEST SCHOOL EVER

Bullying happens, from gossipy girls to aggressive little boys, and the principal fails to address it. Teachers and staff don't seem to know what to do and seem scared to admit how little supervision there is at the school. I have seen heard teachers make contradictory statements regarding supervision circumstances. Parents used to volunteer at lunch and recess so there was better supervision then, but the current principal does not seem to want parents around, except for fundraisers. The kids know that when they're not being watched, they can get away with things.

There doesn't seem to be sufficient education for the teachers on how to assess the kids, or even the need for assessment and differentiation. It seems the teachers just plow ahead with what they have planned without regard to the actual students. If there is assessment done, it is so late into the school year that much time is wasted.

You hear about things the principal does or says and you think, "surely that's an exaggeration". Then the day comes when you experience her work yourself and you realize "i am not sure my kid is even safe here". She always dismisses every concern parents bring to her attention. Kids have been injured through faculty negligence and the principal dismisses it. The pastor is a sweet, intellectual man who seems afraid to take charge though it is so badly needed and he has the authority, no, the responsibility, to do so.

The past three years have been terrible. The most recent principal has made this school a wreck. I finally admit that I have to get my kids out of the school. When I saw what other schools are doing and the technology and other teaching tool they have and the quality of teachers at other schools I realized I was doing my kids a disservice by keeping them at St Didacus.

This school is out-dated, out-of-touch and dilapidated. The teachers and principal are disconnected from students, parents and today's educational needs. The principal is almost impossible to reach and in denial that her ship is sinking. Things are so bad students are leaving during the middle of the school year.

You know there are serious problems at this school when the principal sends this message home to parents on December 6, 2016:
Please note: Parents having any concerns about the school - curriculum, staff, programs;
policies, etc. are kindly requested to contact the classroom teachers and/or the principal. The
school is aware of a few parents contacting other schools for possible mid-year transfers and
parents talking among themselves regarding their concerns. Unfortunately, most of the
scuttlebutt (gossip), on the part of a small group of parents, that has been brought to the
school's attention is negative in nature. St. Didacus Parish School has a strong reputation of
being a great school which it is. As principal, I am available for parents - my door is always
open.

Best thing i ever did for my kids was get them outta this school! The principal has taken one of the top schools in the Diocese and run it into the ground. Only three teachers who were there before her remain. She's gone through two bookkeepers in as many years. Close to 20% of the families have left. Parents are to pay up and shut up, heaven forbid you should have a suggestion or a problem. The teachers left are noticeably discontented. Academically, the school went from 1st in Academic Decathlon to 11th. As far as Catholicity, at least one family has left the Catholic Church completely, scandalized by the principal's treatment of them when they brought up a concern about curriculum changes. Enrollment is so low that the principal is offering current families a break on their volunteer requirement if they convince a new family to register. Meanwhile, tuition creeps up and up. For a school with minimal grounds, no air conditioning, no field, no parking, an ancient play structure over a tattered mat, with the kids basically running amok due to insufficient staff supervision, it is a bad bargain. There are plenty of other options!

All three of our kids attended beginning in 2001 and one still does. Our entire experience has been great. Things change, principals and teachers come and go, but St. Didacus has remained a top level educational experience for students, academically and spiritually. Everything at St. Didacus, from the classroom to extra curricular activities, is always well done and always produces excellent results. I would do it all over again without hesitation if I had three more kids....keep it up St. Didacus!

When I was in the younger grade, I learned a lot and understood it. Now my little sister doesn't understand very simple math. Even worse, in older grades, they do not teach us enough so we are very confused the next year, putting our future high school choices at risk. Also teachers are mean!

Not enough homework is given sometimes not even relevant to what we have been taught in class so many students have a hard time with simple tasks.

My teacher this year has picked a handful of students to express her anger, she is not fair with her punishments and takes her personal problems to work. The principal uses her old fashioned mindset to alienate. All students are not welcome to share their own ideas, because she shoves her own opinions down everyone's throats and is not welcome to individuality.

I have gone to this school for 9 years, yet I still feel unwelcome. Parents may write good reviews for the school, but take it from a student. The principal only cares about getting recognition for HER work and doesn't care about us at all. My mom has been a part of the school community for 9 years, but in the past year she has been alienated enough by the new principal and teachers to leave the school. When I first started at St. Didacus, it was a family friendly school with great education. In the past 2 years, it has not gone downhill, it has plunged straight down.

My son has attended this school since kindergarten (he is now in eighth grade) and my daughter since pre-school. We are so grateful that this school was available to us. My son has learning disabilities and high-functioning autism, and while the school does not offer speech therapy or other specialized services, they have worked so hard to help him succeed, and he has NEVER, in nine years, been bullied. Of course some teachers have been better than others, but the administration has always been receptive and supportive, and both of our children have received an excellent, caring education. The traditional methods of teaching, pro-active discipline and strict uniform requirements might not be for everyone, but I would whole-heartedly recommend this school to any parent.

The education here is great! The teachers help out a lot and understand if the children don't grasp the concept of something so they help the children learn more easily. They have the best teachers and they prepare the children greatly for high school! I'm glad i haven't removed my student from this school. The teachers really push the children to their highest limits which is great!

STAFF, TEACHERS & STUDENTS ARE ALL TOP NOTCH! We have two children attending St Didacus and have to say it is an OUTSTANDING school. The school ensures the students are at a higher educational level then their peers at other schools and promote higher education learning. The staff is willing to meet with parents and address all issues without fail. The staff is highly educated, trained and skilled and leave no doubt the kids are in great hands. Yearly the school has won academic honors and the students ALL score high on state and HS admission exams. Not just a handfull of students scoring high, but all of the kids. If there are learning issues the parents are fully advised and the children are not just passed on to the next grade. The parents are all very friendly and down to earth. The kids all get along and work well with each other. THIS SCHOOL IS FOR FAMILIES WHO CARE ABOUT A GREAT EDUCATION FOR THEIR KIDS!
