I am writing this review purely as a heads up to any parents of neurodivergent and/or special needs kids thinking of St John. We are heavily involved in the church and it was our hope to send our son to St John School.

We invested lots of time and resources to making this happen. Our son has mild autism and adhd, which we were honest about up front. After three days of kindergarten, they told us they did not have resources for him and we were forced to unenrolled him.

I am thankful this happened after three days instead of three months, however, we were led to believe they had resources to accommodate him. They boast about their learning specialists program on their website and have awards for inclusion displayed in the front office.

Thankfully, we were refunded some tuition, but spent over $1000 in fees and uniforms and put in a lot of emotional effort making connections with other families. If your child has a diagnosis or IEP of any kind, I encourage you to keep your options open and ask a lot of questions.

We are now happily enrolled in Encinitas Public Schools.

Our 3 kids have been at St. John for the past 8 years and we really couldn't be happier. The academics, faith, morals, extra-curricular activities, school spirit, and camaraderie are top notch. St. John truly feels like a family; a place where all are welcome, included, and supported. The highly qualified and talented teachers and staff show up for our kids for all the right reasons, deferring a higher salary in the public system for this faith-based mission with integrity and passion. We are SO grateful to attend St. John and would not send our children anywhere else.

We have been in the Saint John School Community for 15 years. The small school environment and and amazing community are priceless. The academics are great and the faith based atmosphere help reinforce the values we teach at home. I love that my kids know so many families in the community and always feel so comfortable. We will have so many positive memories when we leave Saint John School.

It was tempting to send our kids to the local (top-rated!) public elementary schools and not incur tuition fees, but a Catholic education is important to us, so we chose SJS several years ago when our oldest was starting kindergarten - and we are so thankful that we did! The faith-based community has been very nurturing for our children, and the academic rigor has been well-balanced. Academically my children are advancing more than their neighborhood friends in our public school, plus they are constantly growing in their Catholic faith and their sense of moral responsibility. The faculty and staff make a point of knowing and looking out for all of the students. The admin is very tuned into the community and always looking for growth opportunities. We are so thankful that we chose to attend SJS - it is truly one of the best investments we have ever made.

We love the education and community experiences our children have at St John. We transferred from a local public school - the rigor of the curriculum and behavioral expectations set at St John are leaps and bounds ahead of the experience at the public school.
I love the connection the children have across all the grades. All the teachers, staff and administrators welcome our children daily with warm smiles.
In the event of bullying / bad behavior that is part of middle school years - I have appreciated the schools approach by messaging all the students and parents to ensure everyone has the same understanding and expectations of how to treat classmates and others.
Staff and teachers are prompt in their responses and communicate upcoming events, homework, etc effectively.

What I would say about this school is it is nice and “comfortable.” The kids are well rounded and have good values, however they don’t really seem to excel at much and are fine with status quo. My kids are bright and weren’t challenged at all. We ended up pulling them due to covid but wont be going back.

Also- they switched their preschool from play-based to “academic” which was a total mistake. The are treating the preschoolers like mini kindergarteners (which they aren’t) and only have 5 day a week/full day preschool and pre-k. My poor 3 year old was miserable- teachers were not nurturing and didnt seem to even want to be there!

The Teachers are committed to the progress of each child and are skilled at differentiating the learning for ALL students. I have two children who attend this school, one who is academically advanced, and and one that is average. I feel that both of their needs are met equally, and they are excelling academically.

It shocks me that people have ever criticized the Administration at this school. They are willing to meet and listen to concerns at the drop of the hat. They know each child by name, and greet everyone every single morning at drop off. I have brought concerns I've had to their attention, and while not all problems are easily solved, they are kind and compassionate listeners and strive to find realistic solutions.

Posted: January 30, 2019

The school has a significant Learning Support Center with dedicated staff, and offers academic intervention for students who need it. We previously attended a public school and have a child that had an IEP, and have found that the school has been incredibly open to offering common sense accommodations and has exceeded our expectations. Conversations with Teachers are frequent and easy, not adversarial like our last school. I have emailed Teachers in the evening with questions and concerns and have had my concerns addressed by the next morning. I think it is important to understand that this school cannot handle ALL challenges, but if you are a family willing to provide outside therapy and support, this school will work with you to see that your child reaches their full potential.

Posted: January 30, 2019

The Teachers and Administration work tirelessly to enforce an environment where empathy and tolerance are at the forefront. Every morning the children recite the Respect Pledge which discusses how each of us is different and they must "expect it, respect it and accept it". Most importantly, when my children have had any issues with peers, it is commonplace for PARENTS to work through it together, and use each experience as a learning opportunity for all involved.

Posted: January 30, 2019

I have found that the teachers and administration are open to discussion around homework, and are invested in making sure that the assignments are reinforcing the lessons taught in class. While some years have appeared heavier on Homework, I think the Administration has heard concerns, and addressed them accordingly.

Posted: January 30, 2019

Truly couldn't be happier. The school offers a balanced, faith based education that focuses on the whole child. The families are overall wonderful, with most looking for the same thing we were - an inclusive, loving environment where the Teachers and Administration CARE. I have met lifelong friends, and am so grateful to what this school has brought to our family.

Provides a strong combination of both character as well as academics. We have sent 2 children through the school and loved the attention to the whole child. They learned things like shaking hands while looking someone in the eye and how important it is to give back to community. Love that they still have a Christmas program since that's been removed from Public school.

Our children began their introduction to elementary education as kindergarteners at Saint John School and it didn’t take long for us to fall in love with this faith-based, academic community of educators and families. When you enter the school, there is a sign that reads, “Be it known to all who enter here that Christ is the reason for this school”. This message always makes me smile when I read it, as it is completely evident by spending only a few minutes on campus that Christ IS the reason for this school. The Catholic principals and academic rigor provide the foundation upon which this school is built.

Additionally, Saint John School partners with parents and families in a way that is unprecedented in elementary schools today. Parents are invited to participate in their children’s education through multiple volunteer opportunities in and out of the classroom. In an effort to support the entire growth, development, and success, of each individual child, parents remain a constant partner of both teachers and administrators.

We continue to be impressed with the teachers who challenge and support our children, the administration who are committed to seek ways to improve the school, and the families that continue to donate their time and money to help make their vision a reality. Saint John really has a very special and unique community who feel more like family to us than friends.

We are confident that being a part of this school has put our children on a different trajectory than if they had attended any other elementary school. Saint John School will always have a very special place in our heart.

Teachers engage the students and truly care. We returned from overseas where our girls attended public school where the teachers only cared about getting home early. Some of the DODDEA teachers did not make time for the children to meet with them if the child had questions or did not understand a topic that they covered.

Posted: October 18, 2017

This is one of the strengths of ST John School, developing strong character and respect for your peers.

Posted: October 18, 2017

Have not interacted much with the school leadership, which is more our fault than theirs. Can not fairly rate them.

Posted: October 18, 2017

Can not rate as we were blessed with healthy, intelligent girls.

Posted: October 18, 2017

We addressed this one of our daughter's teachers last year and they dealt with it immediately. There is no tolerance for bullying.

Posted: October 18, 2017

Our girls love going to school, which is a big change from the public school. The teachers care and work to see that their students succeed. We have been very pleased and enjoy our interactions with the other parents.

Posted: October 18, 2017

The teachers work to ensure homework is balanced as to not overwhelm the students. It is based on what they learned and helps reinforce that knowledge. Any successful mature adult knows that homework increases as the child progresses through school and prepares them for high school and college. Having multiple advanced degrees, I can tell you that you need a strong foundation to be prepared to succeed academically.

All members of the community strive to develop young Catholic leaders who are Christ-centered persons, life-long learners, and responsible citizens. Instrumental in this goal, is the school's innovative Faith in Action program.

At Saint John School, there is a commitment to continuous school improvement. The administration has an open door policy and works in partnership with the entire community to enhance the educational and religious experience for all members.

Posted: October 2, 2017

Teachers practice the components of differentiated learning in the classroom. Additionally, the school developed a Learning Support program to better meet the needs of exceptional learners.

Posted: October 2, 2017

With faith and leadership at the forefront, students recognize Christ in all members of the community and pledge to respect their fellow students.

Posted: October 2, 2017

Saint John School staff continually analyzes and updates our homework policy to reflect our philosophy that the purpose of homework is for students to practice applicable learning targets, build stamina, and reinforce learning. We recognize that the most important aspect of homework is the quality of the assignment and not the quantity of work given. Every parent is encouraged to contact teachers if their student has difficulty completing the homework. Teachers will work to meet the needs of the individual student.

Posted: October 2, 2017

Saint John School employs a professional teaching staff who are fully credentialed. Many hold advanced degrees and all teachers participate in professional learning opportunities to keep current with their practice. Teachers utilize best practices to meet the needs of all learners.

Posted: October 2, 2017

Saint John School is a wonderful Catholic school environment. The school provides a rigorous academic program while partnering with parents to develop individuals of strong faith and character who provide service to those in need. The administration has always had an open door policy. Parents are encouraged to meet face-to-face to discuss pertinent issues and resolve differences. Because this site does not allow response to anonymous, individual comments and concerns, it is important that parents meet with the administration to be sure their student's need are being addressed.

DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED WITH THE AMOUNT OF HOMEWORK MY 7TH GRADE HAS! ITS RIDICULOUS. ITS BECAUSE THESE CHILDREN DONT GET TAUGHT IN SCHOOL AND ARE FORCED TO DO HOMEWORK INSTEAD OF SCHOOL WORK. PATHETIC!
From a VERY mad parent

Posted: January 4, 2017

This is a school with deplorable education and awful teachers. Religion is a subject that interrupts learning excessively from subjects that could help children exceed. In addition to learning, this school believes that a student should study less in school and do more homework which leads to the children in this school to be more stressed than ussual and cry themselves to sleep every single night! This school does not have updated technology and uses old computers and technology. The school uses a way of controlling children with a yellow sheet of paper called "slips" which deduct points from a child's behavior and the worst part is that they can't add points to their behavior grade even if they act in an amazing manor in addiction to this pathetic form of punishement, this "slip" is given for things like a not tucked in shirt or if the student doesn't have a belt. If you want your child to not grow with ignorance and low self esteem, I wouldn't enroll him into this school.

This school has 30 kids per class and calls itself a private school. It's not a good school and it's not even close. The only good part is the price. It's pretty cheap, but as they say, you get what you pay for. The academics are lower than the local public schools. The kids are nicer and a little more innocent but there are bad kids at all schools who ruin that for the rest.

The admin is horrific. The VP runs the place and without her it would go down entirely. They have the most clueless submarine commander in charge who is so impersonal--and don't engage him to solve any problems because he is spineless and will run for cover.

The teachers are hit or miss in a big way. We had a great first year teacher one year and then a horrific seasoned teacher the next. The latter was down right mean spirited and talked down to the kids. I witnessed it repeatedly. It is surprising that the school keeps her around! OPE or Mission Estancia are fine public elementary schools with the same amount of students in each class as St John. So what are you paying for? Moms of the girls, that's what. They run the place. It's all about the clicky moms of girls. Somehow they have every advantage in their small pond. It's pretty humorous to a point. But, it's also sickening to know you are subsidizing it.

Lastly, they do the exact same thing every year at St John. The poor kids get the same experience year in and year out. There is no variety--much like the Christmas program. It's the same exact thing every year. This could be a great school. But it starts at the top. The attitude of the Principle trickles down throughout the school. If he would just pass the baton to the VP I feel she would fix it.

Love this school! They are constantly working on improving the campus, curriculum and overall experience. Nice families with good core values. The size of the school is nice as it is not to big, nor is it too small. The administration is hands on and addresses behavior issues quickly and efficiently. This is for the well rounded child and for those seeking a family environment.

Posted: June 18, 2015

Difficult administration to deal with. They make decisions without talking to parents. Some teachers are wonderful and have years of experience and some teachers are fresh out of school. We are sad we were treated so poorly at this school! I would not recommend this school for a child that has learning/ physical disabilities. Make sure your wallet is full of money as they ask for money all year long!

There are still a few teachers who could definitely use some improvement in their area of expertise. Most are really good, though.

Posted: June 3, 2015

Some teachers do give too much homework, more than an hour a night. Other teachers are aware of how busy kids are after school these days and allow time in class to finish work.

Posted: June 3, 2015

It is a religious school, so honesty and integrity are at the heart of it's education. That said, they are still kids who don't always do what they are taught. Some parents should provide a better example to their kids.

Posted: June 3, 2015

I have two children here; my oldest since kindergarten. We all love the school overall and feel it is providing an excellent, well-rounded education. We're grateful to be part of such a great community of families. Like any school, it has its issues with staff, parents, kids, etc., but administration is willing to work with parents to accommodate students as best they can given their resources. From what I hear from parents at other schools, there’s nothing unique or worse at our school.

The environment is very structured, definitely tough on discipline, and pretty classic Catholic education style. It’s probably not right for everyone but it’s one of the reasons we chose this school and it works for us for now.

In addition to challenging academics, there are a lot of great programs like the service-based Faith in Action program, award-winning journalism club, foreign language from 3rd grade, music and computers since kindergarten, and great afterschool options like band, sewing, chess, robotics, jump rope, pee wee soccer and sports teams from 5th grade and up. And unlike public schools, students aren’t subjected to standardized test, after test, after test ...

The school is not overly cliquey or run by a “handful of families;” rather, it’s a couple dozen or so families who do a majority of the volunteer work and keep some of the best aspects of the school running. Parents beg for more parents to help. If you just drop your kid at the gate and never step foot on campus, you're not likely to have the same experience as a family who steps in and gets involved.

There've been a lot of changes in recent years, some for the better, some posed new challenges, but most feel it’s moving in the right direction.

Is there room for improvement? Yes, but quitting at the first sign of trouble isn’t the answer and not a good lesson for kids either. Bad attitudes in elementary school kids are nothing new and shouldn’t be blamed on everyone else.

It's important to know this is a Catholic school, first and foremost, not just a private school. Have your kids attend for the right reasons, not just because you want a cheaper, private education.

You have the choice to be here or not. For now, for us, the good far outweighs the bad. Saint John’s is a great school.

Posted: May 11, 2014

It is very sad to have to write this, but if I an spare any child to the bad experience my children had, I will. This school, like said in previous reviews is very clicky. It feels like a few families run the whole school. The administration allows this to happen. Teachers are very authoritarian. And academically it's not as strong as the schools near by.

Posted: February 17, 2014

My son has attended Saint John school for three years and we have had a wonderful experience. The focus has been not just on academics, but on faith and respect of others. My son respects adults, his peers and himself. Each year the school has continued to make improvements academically, from a technology infrastructure perspective, and have implemented a healthy lunch program. We are very happy with the school and plan to have our son continue through eighth grade.

Posted: January 28, 2014

Saint John is a good fit for a family seeking a more intimate environment with expectations for students to be held accountable. There are all the challenges expected of any social setting; cliques, bullying, and favoritism. Staff and faculty work with parents to resolve issues. The hiring of inexperienced teachers in the middle school is hopefully a trend that is reversing. Recent departure of principal with too many personal ties to the school (including her own children as students) bodes well for the future of the school. If you seek the highest academic preparation available look to Francis Parker or Bishops. At minimum, the school allows children and teens to grow free of the distractions of and exposure to drugs and sex the public school systems are burdened with. It isn't perfect, but neither am I or my children. There is a willingness to improve and as long as you stay involved, you likely won't regret it.

My daughter has gone to this school for awhile now. She used to enjoy it but as she got older things changed. This is her last year at this school, which they try to make the best year. So far this is her worst year between teachers and separation of friends. They did not put her with a single friend. The girls at this school are extremely clicky . My daughter has always been a super happy girl but this year i have been worried about her. I have noticed things that she has never done in the past. Also the parents... i try not to get involved with them to much cause they are just as bad as their kids, but i was "invited" to a meeting to talk about the gossip going on in the 8th grade. it terrible. save your money! i cant tell you how many times i hear my daughter ask to change schools, unfortunately we have already paid. And the teachers are the most judgmental. except she likes her math teacher. but the L.A and S.S is apparently a try-hard and she tries to be their favorite teacher. Worse yet she told one of the students there is no hope for their grades. Honestly this school is not worth your money.

Posted: January 3, 2014

Ever since kindergarten to 8th grade, my experiences with this school have been both positive and negative. Most positive experiences occurred in my lower grades when I had no common sense. But, as I got older, I did become smarter and realized some of the many many faults of the school. In the current middle school, teachers give me dirty looks in the halls, totally disrespect me, and give you slips for the most unnecessary reasons. The fact that the school hasn't made any changes to what students have said makes me lose hope. over every year, it's like you repeat the same thing, and by the end of the 9 years you attend, you are completely burnt out. The school has turned into a real joke over the years. The teachers don't help me at all, and the kids that aren't the sharpest don't benefit much. Some families that have a lot of money, got privileges that a family like mine, wouldn't have got in a trillion years. Some teachers dress very inappropriately and it is a huge distraction to girls and boys. bottom line, the teachers don't care about us as much as the teachers at the old school..but I hope there is change for the students attending in future. fix it.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA this school is a total joke. I hate all the teachers there except Mrs. Smith (love you Mrs. Smith!) and Mrs. Courtney but she retired. Teachers there are so negative and unsupportive its actually hilarious that our motto is accepted expected and respected because students are treated with none of that.... 6 more months and im out!

I am a student, an may I say the school itself Is great in terms of the campus and the small number of students. Thee teacher and staff are the problem. Over the 9 years I've been there the school changes the students into terrible people. The teachers don't care at the students and the staff couldn't seem like they hate their life more. For 5000 dollars a year I want staff members that care. There are a few members of the staff who love the kids, but only a few and many got fired last year. And the parents! The parents are even worst, I know kids in my grade who don't have a phone, where as public school parents give there kids some room. Bottom line: Don't send your kid to sjs it will ruin your kids in the future.

My daughter had a wonderful experience last year in Kindergarden that we decided to keep her at Saint John for first grade! Her Kindergarden teacher was very experienced, loving and really knew how to challenge her. She just started her first grade with a brand new teacher but seems to like everything so far. We are financially sacrificing to have her attend Saint John but the academics excellence is so well worth it! In addition, the administration, teachers and parent are so supportive that it is so worth it!

We have been at St John's school for 5-10 years, and I have to say I I i I agree with the majority of the issues presented in this forum. Yes definitely there are clicky Mom's but I tend to ignore those stupid self centered women who plan group social events during hours that no working parent can attend. For some reason my kids like the school and the education is OK. The issue with me currently is how the decisions are made in which teacher the students are placed each year. Having two classes for each grade there is always a preferred teacher. Everyone pays the same tuition however there are some students that seem to be placed in the preferred teachers class year after year. I know that the school relies on volunteers but they must consider the fact that working parents are contributing in ways that strengthen the economy and deserve the same quality or education for their children. I do work full-time and I am very disappointed this year, having been placed with the same inferior teacher again. I wasn't able to find out who it was until two days before the start of school.

Sadly I recently pulled my youngest child from St. John. Although it was a wonderful school for my older children, the new principal has driven most of the teachers away. Almost 50 percent of the staff left this year. There is a lack of caring for the well being of the students, and families unless you are the star student that will bring prestige to the school.

This is our second year at St John and my son likes the school. The teachers are very nice and work with the students and encourage them in a positive way to do better. I would recommend the school.

Terrible experience overall. Teachers and administration were rude and unresponsive. Incredibly negative environment. My son was hated by the administration and dealt with very harshly. He left with hurt feelings and a disdain for what is suppose to be a Christian school. We have been parishioners for 28 years and all changed when the leadership changed. The attitude is if you don't like it, go somewhere else. It pains me to see the changes the school has gone through. The "Now Enrolling" sign stays up all year long when there used to be a wait list. I can't imagine they can continue this way. I believe all the problems come down to the school and parish leadership. So sorry to have to write this...

An excellent mid-sized school with very dedicated teachers and staff. Administration is pushing in the right direction and is holding teachers and students more accountable for their actions and results. I have had two students attend Saint John. One is still at the school, and the other is in high school. My high schooler is excelling beyond my wildest dreams and my grade school student enjoys school immensely. I attribute this to Saint John as an institution and the opportunities it has given them. Many of the grade school teachers are some of the most dedicated I've ever seen. I've personally walked by the school on Saturdays and after Mass on Sundays during the year and there almost always seem to be a few teachers and administrators working to ensure the week ahead is the best it can be for the kids.

This school is going down hill very quickly. I don't know who these other parents are (the ones blissfully writing glowing reviews), but they must be on another planet. The school's administration is going through a crisis in personnel management and decision making. The woman they've put in charge at the school is just horrible and she's making decisions based on personal vendettas and old gripes. Her kids attend the school and she's targeting anyone who has ever crossed her or her kids. The principal just buries his head in the sand. A group of parents are strongly considering going to the diocese to report this.

We have been at St. John's for 7+ years. We feel blessed to be in such a wonderful community of teachers and families. We've made life-long friends and so have our children. Our children are stimulated academically and I feel they are safe here and in good care. They have blossomed here and we couldn't be happier.

Saint John School is an amazing school. The teachers are constantly doing their best to meet the needs of every child. The communication is fantastic from the teachers through their newsletters, websites, and email. The administration is alright. Many people wonder why there are so many and how that takes away from the budget when the money could be spent in so many different ways (like towards the teachers who work so hard). The school and parent community is truly a faith based community and very involved. Saint John is a wonderful school that your child will benefit from spiritually, academically, and socially.

A school on the rise with a caring and strong staff. I have a middle school student who entered a few years ago, and I have been amazed. It was tough at first for my child to make friends because like any schools there are a lot of cliques. But we stayed because I feel the teachers and administration genuinely care about my child's growth as a person and a student. Also, the administration does not play favorites, and this is refreshing. A student on financial aid is treated with the same deference and attention as those children whose parents flash conspicuous wealth. During the past few years the school has become more rigorous academically and consistent in discipline. Like other private schools we've attended, there is no shortage of parents and children with over developed senses of entitlement who act as if they are beyond reproach or christian principles. So if you go to Saint John and stay clear of the malignant discourse of the malcontents while working with your child and their teachers, your child will surely thrive. So I am unable to reconcile many of the negative comments below with what I personally witness. I recommend the school very highly.

Saint John is an overall good school. My kids have been going there since preschool and now are in 3rd grade. They have done well academically as well as with religion. There are always ups and downs at each school, however, admin. does try to fix most problems. There is no need for two VP's and it is eating at the budget, however, since one is pretentious and the other is more "real" and family friendly, we need to keep them both. Teachers ARE amazing, kids for the most part are 98% GREAT (only a few should be removed) and if you don't want to deal with parents, just don't get into the hen pen and keep to your child's education and welfare. Campus is clean, however, field is a danger and should NOT be overlooked by admin. Fear is that a true injury is the only way that the field will change. Father Joe is AMAZING and we wish he was the leader of the school. Overall I would give it a 3.5, however, not worthy of dropping it to a 3. Middle school appears to be building to improve, but not experience there yet to give true opinion. School should keep to no more than 26-28 per class like St. Pat's, so there are a few larger classes. Preschool needs to disappear to make it stronger!

I am a student here, I am in 8th grade.. I have been here sense kindergarten... maybe the most unhappy place on the planet... this school is just simply bad... The teachers are horrible they do not teach you anything.. when you talk they force you to read it and they wont help explain it so basically if you talk your sacrificing your education.. they give you stupid "slips" that are a waste of time.. a piece of paper does not scare me at all

It saddens me to see such bad reviews. Our family has been extremely happy at Saint John School as well as being members of the parish. Our daughter has flourished and is so happy at the school.

The staff at this school love children and consistently try to partner with parents to help students achieve the Student Learning Expectations of being a Christ-centered person; active lifelong learner; and responsible citizen. They are dedicated to the point of sacrificing their personal time to help your child. The extracurriculars speak for themselves: they consistently come in second overall in the diocese in the Academic Decathlon, and they always receive feedback from high schoolers and their parents about how well prepared they have been. Many of their teachers are overqualified, but it is a labor of love and faith, and your children are the ones who benefit!

St. John isn't the worst private school I've seen, but it's close. First, if you're looking for teacher quality and great academics, St. John shouldn't even be n your list. The teachers are average at best, below average overall. Some are just downright pathetic. If you want your child to receive a Catholic education, then St. John is pretty good. If you're a parent looking for the overall "community" element, again St. John is pretty good. However, a major caveat accompanies the community element. I have never seen such an insular, cliquish group of parents in my life. I've gone to Catholic schools my whole life (except college, where I attended any Ivy league school), and I have never seen so much attitude among the parents. I can't tell if it's a sense of elitism or that of protectionism of cliques. But it seems to permeate throughout the St. John community. If you're new, watch out. New families aren't exactly embraced with open arms. I can send my kids to any school I want and I thought St. Johns would be the best fit. Boy was I wrong. I will be definitely looking at other schools in the area come Spring time. BTW, the administration at St. Johns is comical.

We love the family of St. John's! We've been here for four years and each year we have been blessed with a wonderful teacher for my child. If that was it, I'd been thrilled, but we have made great friends with other parents which is icing on the cake. We truly look forward to participating in school and church events because the "family" here is so wonderful. I'm stunned by the negative comments I've read. Our experience couldn't been further from these complaints.

Our children have had excellent experiences at St. John School. We have three children (now 12, 10 and 7) that have attended since Kindergarten. We believe St. John is a great school because of the high quality of the education, the community of its families, and the emphasis on faith and community service. Academically, St. John students consistently excels, taking 2nd Place Overall against all Diocese of San Diego Schools in the Academic Decathlon 2012, and 1st Place Overall in Math Field Day 2012. Previous years have similar achievements. ITBS results are also very very strong. Importantly, continued education for our teachers is encouraged, and half of our faculty have advanced degrees. The community of families is very strong and we are pleased that our children are in a learning environment that extends the values that we instill at home. Programs remain available at StJ that are under scrutiny in public schools (arts, music, drama, yearbook, journalism, chess, etc) Finally, community service is a key component of our children's development, and StJ has very active programs (food drives, water conservation, clothing drives and delivery) that include all children.

It will be with a very heavy heart that I remove our daughter from Saint Johns school mid year. When the bad outweighs the good; hard decisions have to be made as we accept what we cannot change. Our son attended this school K-8, our daughter preschool, through 3rd grade and now in fourth grade. The girl bullying has caused our girl to suffer so much over the past two years. Exclusion, rude comments, and condescending looks just to name a few. Teachers had no impact on changing the circumstances and suggested counseling for our daughter. Administration is very slow in implementing their new bullying prevention program. The gossip and nouveau riche cliques are what motivates this administration. The girl/mom cliques are the worst I have experienced in my 48 years. The best thing the school could do is ask the church to take it over. It needs a big dose of real truth, community and love.

The comment below made on Oct 2011 is exactly the non-christian attitude that has caused so many of us to leave this school. The reference to "chubby kids" and the principal "working on it" makes me sad and leaves me empty. The principal's response to the inappropriate comment should have been more profound and Christian like. This kind of attitude justifies and encourages kids to make fun and bully others. No wonder. It's difficult to plant apple seeds and expect pear trees.

Why anyone would pay to have their little ones subjected to the turn over in this preschool is beyond me. A program of nothing more then pay to play. Teachers dismissed without any explanation to parents. One day the teacher is there the next a one liner note is sent home saying sorry she is no longer with us. No goodbyes, no closure, nothing. How Christian is that? Little ones left with instability. This has been a revolving door for years. A questionable Director. Questionable licensing regulations. Questionable Christianity. Save your money. Save elementary school have pulled their children out of this preschool only to enter them into other denominational programs down the hill. What does that tell you ? Poor leadership, poor program, poor value.

This school is a travesty. I had one child attend from K-8 grade, and another from K-7; we finally pulled our younger one out in he middle of the 7th grade, a very difficult time to transfer a student. We were desperate. I could go on and on about the array of disappointments with this school, but here is the bottom line: they don't care about your child. I am a public school teacher, and would have been fired immediately for doing just one of the things that these teachers do every day. They are overly-strict, controlling, authoritative, and just plain mean. The student body is unhappy, dejected, and oppressed. It is a very negative environment where children, "should be seen and not heard." Not a healthy situation for kids. Save your money, and your child's happiness-don't enroll them in this school. Additionally, in case you are still considering St. Johns, this 2011-2012 school year, they have lost at least 1/3 of their students, who've left for a better situation AND HAVE NOT COME BACK. Every single one of those long-standing families have discovered that their children are much happier elsewhere. Doesn't that tell you something?

We are so happy with St. John's. We moved here a few years ago, and this school is a perfect fit for our family. Our kids are challenged academically, and have made great friends. They participate in the extracurricular activities, i.e., drama club, athletics, running club, girl scouts. We have made life long friends here and are so thankful for the teachers. They go above and beyond and really care about our children.
