When we moved here mid year, we were expecting a rough transition for our kids. It has been anything but. It has been smooth and our kids love the school. There teachers have welcomed them with open arms and their classmates have welcomed them into social groups and already invited them to birthday parties and social gatherings. We are excited about what our kids are learning... and expect our Jr K child to be well advanced in his reading because of how quickly he is learning the letters and because of His love of books.

St. Paul School and preschool has been an incredible experience for our kids. The teachers have been warm and welcoming and express care and concern for the kids. We have one in the preschool and 2 in the grade school. We have made the choice for private education in the past, and faced challenges, but have overall been happy.

I would highly recommend the school to anyone... It works very hard to prepare kids for what is ahead academically and even more so the challenges that they will face out in the world.

One of the best things is having their Pastor or their DCE come into the 8th grade classroom and answer the questions of the eight graders, who get to ask the questions anonymously. It allows the eighth graders to ask what is really on their hearts and really feel heard.

We pulled our children from this school after a number of "occurrences" all having to do with the safety of the children, and the way in which the teachers (second grade particularly), and the principal choose to handle them. We left feeling the safety and well-being of the children come second to financial gain.

We had one bad experience after another at St. Paul's, and would encourage anyone considering this school to look elsewhere. My child has always had a very positive attitude about school, and always looked forward to going to school. This all changed when we went into second grade. My child would come home on a regular basis saying that the teacher was a mean bully.

I am aware of an occasion where the class was told that they would not see their beloved pets in heaven because animals do not have souls. This was very upsetting to our child, and us! What kind of teacher says this to children?

We were made aware of a number of other disturbing issues in this class. It got to the point where our child was no longer happy at school, and we no longer had the confidence in the teacher or management that this was a safe environment for our child.

This was a great little school at one time. Unfortunately, their pastor left the congregation. In our opinion, there has been a huge shift at the school in his absence. Further, it has been over a year since the school/parish has had a pastor, as they are still seeking out the right candidate.

Sadly, the principal has proven (in the opinion of my family) to be ill-equipped at dealing with issues pertaining to the safety and well-being of the students. Poor choices have been made, and as a result, we do not have the confidence in this school to continue to send our grandchildren here. If you want piece of mind that your little ones are in a positive, safe environment, then I highly recommend you look elsewhere.

In our experience with the second grade teacher, we were met with a person who came off as being cold, controlling, defensive, condescending, and just down right, a bully. When questioning her, she would not reply to my emails or text messages, and would completely ignore me in person.
I want to provide a few specific examples of what our child experienced while in the second grade that led us to have the opinions that we do about this particular teacher... Her class does something called "Friend of The Week". This is a fun activity for the children to highlight each classmate for an entire week. Our family had an event pre-planned in late January where our child would be missing three of the the five day school week on that particular week. Our daughter in second grade was so worried she may be picked on the one week she knew she would be in school for only two days, we told her to speak to her teacher about it, and ask if she could be chosen as Friend of The Week any other week of the school year. Bear in mind, at this time we were in early November, and we would be out of town the last week of January. The next day at pick-up our daughter started to cry when she saw us. When I asked her what was wrong, she let us know when she told her teacher about our family going away, and asked if she could be chosen as Friend of The Week any other time, the teacher's response to our seven year old was: Your mommy and daddy are not in charge of this class. I am, and I will decide when you are friend of the week. A few months go by, and our daughter had not been chosen as friend of the week. As we near the last week of January, on the Friday before our planned time away, the teacher let our child know she would be Friend of The Week on the following week, when she returns to class on Thursday. That's right. She chose the one week my child would be away, three of the five school days. The week my child requested to not be chosen. As you can see, This teacher specifically singled out my child to prove that she is in charge, she is cruel, and she is a bully. Another incident with this teacher occurred when a child in the class asked her if they would see their dog in heaven, who had just recently passed. The teacher's response was to tell the class that in fact they would not see their pets in heaven, as animals do not have souls. This is another example of her cruelty. Know your audience! These are small children you are speaking to, and upsetting.

To say this school has been a complete disappointed is an understatement. While there has not been a pastor at this school/church for over a year, it is unclear weather or not that is something that is contributing to the sub-par management by the principal. The principal is ill-equipped at dealing with issues pertaining to students being assaulted and teachers displaying openly cruel and harassing behavior to students.

Our family's experience at St. Paul's Lutheran School in San Diego has been nothing less than exceptional. My daughter graduated from St. Paul's a few years ago after a difficult experience in the local public schools. She is graduating and looking at colleges and recently said, "St. Paul's was a life saver." I saw her transition from a nervous child to a confident straight-A student who recently graduated from high school with honors after her years at St. Paul's. St. Paul's taught her to think critically and provided her with a strong community of friends and excellent teachers serving smaller class sizes who are really dedicated to the students. The focus on service was also wonderful.

St. Pauls is an absolute gem. This is our second year there, with 2 kids, and I cannot express enough how thankful we are to have found St. Pauls. Their approach is to nurture the whole child, academically, emotionally, spiritually, socially. The academics are solid, with more of a project-based approach by 3rd grade to encourage problem solving and teamwork. The enrichments are outstanding, with Spanish, PE, choir, technology time during school hours. The music teacher Mrs. Robb is exceptional, and all students participate in music in some capacity. After school opportunities include basketball, cooking, theater, chess, among others. The Christian curriculum is implemented very age-appropriately, and both of my kids have benefited tremendously from the character building and high behavioral expectations. The teachers genuinely care for each and every child. My children both love St. Pauls and felt welcome and embraced from Day 1.

One of the greatest strengths of the St. Pauls curriculum is the character building. The expectations are high for kindness, compassion, and community spirit. As soon as youre on campus, you cant help but notice the politeness and kindness of the students.

Any conflicts between students (inevitable with kids!) are addressed immediately. Because the school is small, there is extremely high accountability in class, during recess/lunch, and enrichment classes. There are minimal handoffs during transition periods, so a teacher is always there to witness the conflict and address it right away.

For privacy sake, I cannot give specifics, but we have been very happy with the way an issue that caused some concern has been handled-for all sides. Again, very caring and interested in the success of all students. Safety, both physical and emotional, for all students is top priority.

The new principal has been at the school for 2 years and lives in the community. As a parent, I am impressed with how she has stepped in and given the school the support and direction it needs as it enters its 70th year. The kids love her. She is very much hands-on, unflappable, caring and focused. A real asset.

Very, very true. There are a lot of community-minded projects that all grades participate in throughout the year. I mean, it is a parochial school, so kindness and compassion are top of the list. Also, the younger and older kids are buddied up and it is not at all uncommon to see middle school kids and elementary kids playing together after school. My son loved having his older chapel buddy when he was in K and 1. And then he got a chance to be a buddy to preschoolers as he has entered the 2,3 and 4th grades.

We have been at St. Paul's for the past 5 years and it's been really great!

The academics are excellent with a lot of project work done in the classrooms. There is age-appropriate homework, with the younger grades being given small amounts to help them start to build good habits as they get older. We have always found it to be reasonable even though, of course, we love no-homework days most of all. :)

The kids are given lots of recess time, as well as PE three times a week. I feel like this has helped our son do even better in the classroom, having a chance to run around and play 3 times a day (K-2) and 2 times a day (3-5) helps him to settle down and focus when it's time to get back to the classroom and work.

Because of the smaller class sizes, kids are able to receive individual attention, if they need it., whether it's a chance to slow down and review something or move on to more challenging work. It's not a cookie cutter learning experience.

We have also been impressed with the music instruction. All kids in the lower grades have choir 2 times a week. When they perform at school or church or in the community, they sound really good. The music director does a great job. It is definitely an extra bonus that my son is getting such a good foundation in music. He has really enjoyed it.

In addition to the school day, there are lots of school-wide events that you can attend. Bingo, movie nights, school dances, bowling, laser tag, tea parties, etc. lots of opportunities for kids to see their friends and have fun running around school together.

We really feel like this school has been a huge asset to our son's childhood and our family.

St Paul's is a wonderful school that supports both their students and their families. Every child has their own academic challenges and needs and the wonderful teachers are able to help, nurture and accommodate all types of students. Our children love going to school, they love going to the after school care program, you have to drag them home from school as they want to stay and play with their friends and hang out with their teachers. Their academics are challenging but they are given every tool they need to succeed. The children are given a complete support system, academically, mentally, physically and spiritually.
Throughout the week the students get physical education and choir. There are many extracurricular after school programs that include Christian Youth Theatre, Mad Science, sports teams, chess club, choir etc. Its a wonderful feeling when your child wakes up in the morning and begs you to go to school.
Many feel that they cannot afford a good private school, or that they can have the same experience at a good public school, but with the current public school class sizes and government regulation there is no way to compare a public school to St Pauls Lutheran. There is an early drop off care from 7-8am and wonderful after school care from 3-6pm. There is only 1 half day per month on the first Friday of the month and the school day goes from 8:15am-3pm, which is wonderful for working parents.
St Pauls gives our children many things and many opportunities but the most important is they teach them how to be a good people, how to have strong values, a sense of self and respect for others as well as themselves

We have been a "St. Paul's Family" for the past eight years, when we first enrolled our daughter in pre-school. I could not be happier with the decision to send our children to St. Paul's. This school truly has a "family feel" to it besides an excellent education. Every teacher knows the names of every student from pre-school up to 8th grade! I feel like my children are so safe and well cared for. The parents are very involved and down to earth. Because the class sizes are so small every child gets individual attention and are allowed to excel at every level. The Christian focus is a huge plus in that the teachers are committed to educating children academically and morally. Negative behavior is not tolerated but handled in a lovingly redirected manner.
Even though we are not Lutheran (we are Catholic), we have been very comfortable with the Lutheran/Christian education. I know several families that do not attend church regularly and they are very happy as well with the overall values of the school.
I would highly recommend this school to any family looking for a high quality education!

Our family loves St. Paul's! The quality and the integrity of the education are impeccable at St. Pauls. The love and guidance from the teachers are genuine. My child is happy and thriving and as a parent that is gratifying to see. To watch his excitement for learning grow as he strengthens his reading skills is amazing. I attribute his educational foundation to the solid early learning teachers at St. Pauls: Mrs. Morgan (K) and Mrs. Cook (1st). They are amazing! And the smaller class size which allows for personal attention to each student.
In fact, this personal attention begins before the student even enters the class -- each summer before the school year begins, the teacher of the incoming grade begins the partnership between student, family and school by travelling to meet their new students and family at their home. The personal touch of these meetings demonstrates how much the teachers truly care for their students and families.
The environment on campus amongst the students is respectful, helpful and energetic. Each year 7th and 8th grade students are paired with the younger students creating buddies encouraging mentoring and support amongst the different ages.
The enrichment programs at St. Pauls are outstanding, music, choir, piano, chess, Robotic Legos, Spanish, Basketball, and Volleyball. Additionally, public speaking is encouraged and fostered as early as Kindergarten in chapel. And at the end of each year, students are encouraged to perform a musical piece in the Celebration of the Arts a campus sponsored tribute to music. Simply stated -- ST. PAULS IS AWESOME!!

This school is Christ-centered and families are happy to be in a school where they feel like they are a part of a family. The staff knows each child and builds a personal relationship with them. They offer sports for boys and girls and music. There's Spanish, a journalism class and robotics. Older and younger children get time to mix and mentor. take a look and see who we are!

My two children have attended the St. Paul's preschool for a year now - and its just a wonderful place!! Caring, well-trained staff, nice-sized classrooms with loads of activities/toys that they rotate, and a good structured schedule. Preschool is play-based with rotating themes every week or two - space, dinosaurs, bugs, pirates, etc. My kids started at 2 1/2 and have learned a ton! The child to teacher/assistant ratio isn't the lowest I found when I was looking to place my kids, but the teachers are all very competent, the children are well supervised and attended to. Mrs. Johnson was our teacher and she was just fantastic with the little ones. I wish I could emulate her calm and patience :) Her art activities and in-class cardboard play structures (submarine, castle, pirate ship, rocket ship - just to name a few) are just amazing and the kids love to play in them. This is a Lutheran school and they teach bible stories and Christian values. I'm from a Christian background but agnostic - I've found the school provides an excellent balance of exposing the kids to the Christian faith without 'overdoing' it. Lastly - I've been very impressed with the behavior of the older kids at the school - generally very polite, helpful, and considerate. I think it speaks well for the overall school environment. Overall we've been very happy here and we highly recommend this school!

WE LOVE ST PAUL'S LUTHERAN SCHOOL!! We love the family environment and the small class size (limit 22 students per class). The school has been teaching to the common core standards for several years now and the students are meeting and exceeding those standards. The school has a preschool and Junior Kindergarten and classes from Kindergarten up to 8th grade. Our favorite part about the school is the interaction across the grades with weekly chapel and how the values align up with the values we are teaching our children at home. The teachers take a genuine interest in each child and go above and beyond to help that child learn and grow. It really is the best kept secret in Pacific Beach!

All three of my children attend St. Paul's (PS, K, 2) and I can't imagine my children any where else. My children leave my house in the morning and simply join their St. Paul's family for the school day. St. Paul's is our family - through after school programs and in-school parent participation. Not to mention the top notch education. The mission and vision of the principal and teachers lives each moment in the classroom. Jesus is the center of every action from teaching in the classroom to activity on the playground. I have no doubt my children are better people for attending St. Paul's. The best elementary-middle education in San Diego!

As a St. Paul's Lutheran School alumni, I look back at my years in school there and think of such wonderful times. Growing up in a small Christian school was just what I needed for a strong foundation. The academics, morals/values, and love for Jesus, I was taught has carried me through. It prepared me to take the right path. I loved the attention from small classes, sports programs, music, plays, camps & field trips, and the friends I made there. As a matter of fact, my closest friends today are my friends from St. Paul's from so many years ago. We grew up together through good times and bad as a big family. I only hope that one day my own kids can experience this like I did. There is definitely something said about going to a small Christian private school.

St. Paul's is truly an amazing school. All the staff from the Principal to the teachers to the administration are wonderful. There is an open door policy and parents are not only welcome but encouraged to be present in the school and its functions. My children have been there since pre-school and we have had nothing but an excellent experience. The pre-school teachers are so experienced and knowledgeable. My children have received a top notch education and are excelling academically. We have a military presence at our school and the entire staff is comfortable with deployment issues. The St. Paul's community has become a second family to ours.

But, through the years as I've heard more and more experiences from parents of children at other schools, I truly realize what a gem St. Paul's is. My daughter attends St. Paul's preschool. The preschool teachers are awesome, and very experienced. These teachers truly love the kids and teach them so much while giving them a fun day too. I see the children from other grades when I'm on school grounds, and am impressed with them and all the teachers I have met. I am not religious but love that my daughter is being exposed to faith and Jesus so she can make her own decisions as she grows.

The class size is perfect for promoting growth in young minds, with class size of 30 plus children in public school, St. Paul's is far ahead with smaller class size to encourage young minds to flourish. My name is James Shahayda and I cannot thank St. Paul's Lutheran School enough for instilling in me the basics of education that have helped me excel in the classroom to this day. I am now a second semester sophomore attending Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia and am proud to say that many of the basics taught to me at St. Paul's have stuck with me and helped me progress beyond the majority of my peers time and time again. I am always ready to tell others about my private schooling at this institution and cite it as the best school I ever went to. Had my public middle school and high school had the same rigorous devotion to education that St. Paul's did I believe that all the students I graduated with would have no problem getting accepted to top tier colleges nationwide. Again, I cannot stress enough how much the things I learned at St. Paul's have stuck with me this whole time and affected the way I've learned in a beneficial way. If you are in San Diego and are looking for the best education possible for your child, St. Paul's is the way to go.

My sister and I went to St. Paul's School when it first opened. We loved going there. The teachers were great. We have told everyone we know who have kids to send the child there. My sister wanted to send her grand child there but was full by the time she moved back. We think he would have been a better student now if he had gone because we learned so much when we went there.

Our two boys went to St. Pauls Lutheran from K-8 and they had a wonderful experience. Not only were they prepared for high school and college, they are kind young men with a strong faith in Jesus. We credit alot of their success to their start at St. Pauls. The parent participation is off the charts and the teachers really, truly care. They even make home visits at the beginning of each year to get to know each child and their living environment. The children learn memorization and gather public speaking skills starting in kindergarten. The Chapel Buddy mentoring program is very special and is a wonderful way for the youngest and oldest students to bond. The St. Pauls family takes care of its own. They rally around anyone who is suffering and have created a small town feel in the big city.

St. Paul's Lutheran School was a blessing to our son and to us as parents from pre-school through 8th grade. The teachers/staff have such a heart for your child. They pray and work tirelessly to have the best year for your child, in the good times and the not so good times. Some college professors complain these days that students do not know how to speak in front of a class or how to write a paper. These two skills are taught early on at St. Paul's. Students are prepared for high school and college. Best of all, Jesus Christ, their Savior, is the focus and the joyful experience in serving others.

Saint Paul's is a very welcoming community, and is designed to build in to the development and success of your child socially, academically and spiritually. My son attended St Paul's Lutheran School in PB for 8th grade only. He experienced a rigorous curriculum, made new friends, participated in sports available to all students of the appropriate age, attended meaningful field trips, and had an overall great experience. The environment was inviting and safe with clear academic and social expectations of the student. He was well prepared for high school and adjusted to the drastic size difference with no problem. Family values were supported by staff at St Paul's which only reinforced what we, as parents, wanted to teach him. My son was in Montessori school through 6th grade and had exceptional learning experiences. Home schooled for 7th grade we had priceless time together both academically and developmentally. The time, effort, and tuition spent on his education from pre-K through 8th grade are justified by seeing the successfully rounded teenager he is today as a Junior in high school and I likely would not have changed anything. However, if I had the opportunity to educate another child knowing the value of St Paul's Lutheran School, I would not hesitate to enroll that child there from elementary through 8th grade.

Both of my children graduated from Saint Paul's and went on to a Lutheran High school. They have both done very well academically in college level courses. If you are looking for an education system with a solid academic foundation, the Lutheran Schools do a good job. The principal seems to curb inappropriate behavior and makes a strong effort to direct students to model and develop healthy life style skills.

I truly love St. Paul's! I know my three kids are loved, well cared for, are receiving a first class education and at the center of it all is a strong foundation in Jesus Christ! The environment and staff instilled a strong faith commitment and appreciation for education in our kids through teaching and modeling . They also introduced the children to sports skills, fair play, and healthy competition. Furthermore, the teaching and administrative staff also genuinely cared for each child and became a good friend of the family. It was truly a lifetime investment, and is manifesting inwardly and outwardly in our kids' lives. St. Paul's was like a third parent to our family, and we will always be grateful they were there for us.

From soup to nuts, St. Paul's is the best decision we could have ever made for our children. Pastor, Principle, Staff and Parent volunteer's are all such wonderful, warm, giving and Christ centered people. I feel blessed beyond measure to be part of such an amazing community. I know my children are receiving an excellent education in an encouraging and loving environment. I wouldn't have my children in any other school.

The classes are small allowing for great interaction with the teachers, and individual instruction. Your kids won't have to worry about getting lost in a sea of 35-40 students.
