I saw the one star review below and felt compelled to respond to it. I am a parent of a child at DCS. We toured EVERY private and charter school in all of North County San Diego, and my child was accepted to all of them. DCS is hands down the most special school! I am not sure why the poster below is so disgruntled but it’s clear that the poster does not actually have a child at the school. Almost the entire staff have been teaching at the school for decades, some 35+ years! Their staff retention is what makes them so special. Janet Cole is attentive, personable and responsive and knows each child personally. The children are getting an education that far surpasses any other school in San Diego IMO. The teachers are incredible and love their students! As for the sports, that definitely is one thing that could use improvement. Although most of the kids that are in competitive sports are playing on club teams that are not affiliated with the school. To be Frank when you are at a small private school with a total of 150 kids the level of competition isn’t as high as you would find outside of the school. So they are focusing on the strengths!
I truly could go on and on about this school and the people that work there. When I saw the below review, I had to post. And I have never posted anything on any of these before. LOVE DCS!

There are big problems with Diegueno Country School. We were told each class (K-6) would be comprised of 20 students and we could expect close to 10 boys and 10 girls. In practice, the headmistress took in as many kids as she seemed to be able to find, sometime getting up to 25 students, with no seeming care to balance genders. We were told there was a rigorous selection process and that the cirriculum was advanced. In practice, there were some very advanced students, and some very remedial students who had been removed from other private schools. Very early, we felt Janet Cole would take in anybody who could afford the tuition.

All of the above could have been dealt with with a competent teaching staff, but headmaster Janet Cole undermined the teachers in order to save money. Turnover in teachers at Diegueno is extremely high. Like many struggling private schools, Diegueno wants to control the payroll expense. They often hire young, inexperienced teachers who will accept a lower pay. Ilke many schools, Diegueno will have a lead teacher and an assistant teacher for each class of 21-25 students. Where Diegueno fails, is that instead of developing good teachers to create good teaching teams, the minute Janet Cole identifies a new teacher as competent, that teacher is pulled out of the assistant role and assigned the lead in their own class. Excellent teaching 'teams' are ALWAYS seperated. And good teachers end up leaving in frustration.

One competent teacher cannot deal with training a never ending stream of trainee teachers, while also trying to challenge a spectrum of students from the most advanced to the most remedial. They teach to the middle, leaving the bottom 25% lost and the top 25% bored. There are constant teacher conflicts and reshuffling.

Diegueno has no sports program and no dedicated PE teacher. Think this isn't important? It is! Part of a child's confidence will come from developing their bodies and finding things they are good at physically. They will enter middle and highschools with established sports teams and students with backgrounds in compeditive sports. Diegueno doesn't take part in any private school sport organizations. There is no athletic facility. Unless parents push afterschool sports, children graduate diegueno feeling that 'sports isn't their thing'. It's a terrible way to go through young life.

The way Dieguno deals with student conflict is to not deal with student conflict.

Do you want a school that caters to your child's learning needs? Challenges in areas that they need? Supports them in their weaker areas? This is the school for you. DCS is a special school that focuses on growing the kids individual unique skills. I have visited other private schools where academics was a strong focus and the kids reminded me of robots. This school really embraces each kid's unique characteristics. My one son has unique ways of getting to his math answers. I was very worried for a while and they ended up encouraging his thought process and his unique way of thinking outside of the box. He ended up doing really well in math. My other son was a shy writing and under the guidance of the Language arts teachers has blossomed into a creative and poetic writer. When I was concerned about my child's emotional state over a passing of a cat, they took time to pull him aside and talk to him to make sure he was okay. I cant ask for anything better.

Looks can be deceiving. The school literary looks like a tree house nestled into a side of a hill and one will wonder how do k through 6th all fit into this school and there be enough space. They make it work. My kids come home happy and smiling daily. The have a good arts program and even science lab. Another shining area is their focus on encouraging stage presence through their theatre class. They put on a couple performances a year. It is pretty impressive they can squeeze in academics AND singing, dancing and memorizing lines. There is an emphasis on public speaking.

Everyone has a different experience with different school. Sometimes it just isn't the right match for the child or the family needs. After being here for a year and seeing the growth in all of our kids. This is the right place for us and our family.

I knew Diegueno was special when I observed their ”DIG” performance. Beginning in Kindergarten, i observed that they were teaching the kids, not only their place; location in this city and state, but their location relative to the rest of the world and were already learning to speak confidently in front of a group of people.
Now my children attend school there and each day I am thrilled to see they are excited to learn, feel understood, supported, nurtured and inspired. Also, I feel happy that integrity and good character are valued. It’s clear that all the faculty do their best with each child to support their growth and appreciate each child’s individuality. They sincerely care about each individual child and that’s reflected in all that they do.

Diegueno is the school you wish you went to as a child and the school where you know your child will learn, grow, and thrive every day!

I believe my children’s love of learning, confidence, independence, and attitude of gratitude is nurtured every day by phenomenal teachers, great friends, a strong leadership team, and our Diegueno community.

The School Day: My children are excited to go to school every morning and love to share their daily learning adventures at pick-up.

Examples - My daughter shares, “I know my teacher cares about me because she is just as excited as me when I work hard to figure out and totally understand a super challenging math problem.” My son shares, “I love how my teachers tell me that they notice and are excited that I am so engaged in class discussions. My teachers care about me, have conversations with me, and really listen to what my friends and I say every day. My teacher's support helps me to challenge myself to do my best.” Every teacher is exceptional, a content area expert, and nurtures a growth mindset. Students receive weekly work assignment contracts to encourage responsibility to set themselves up for productive and successful school weeks.

The Community: Students, families, teachers, and the Diegueno leadership team work together every day as a team.

Example - As a parent, I feel connected/up-to-date on what is happening in the classroom, playground, and current/future school events and information. Diegueno's leadership team and teachers' above and beyond effort every day made in-person learning possible for students this school year. With guidance from our leadership team, the Diegueno community worked in concert to keep our community safe, ready, and able to learn. Students were important team members in this process and experienced teamwork in action. Also, Diegueno school-wide events have a service focus with opportunities to help people and students in our local and worldwide community.

Our Diegueno Experience: From the first day of school to starting 6th grade, my students have felt supported, academically challenged, part of a team, and grateful for their experience and everyone helping them on their journey. My students have had an appropriate homework and project load to allow for afterschool sports, family time, and plenty of time to enjoy being a kid. As a result, my students are excited and completely prepared for middle school and a purposeful life beyond the classroom.

We have had students at Diegueno Country School for over 6 years now. Diegueno has been our sons' home away from home. Our older son just completed his first year of 7th grade at a middle school/high school (after having attended Diegueno from 1st through 6th grades). Diegueno prepared him exceptionally well: socially, emotionally, and academically. We love the Diegueno teachers and staff - they are caring and nurturing. The Diegueno campus is magical like a treehouse surrounded by trees, grass, and playgrounds. The kids get to play capture the flag and other fun games during their breaks. Diegueno language arts teachers are especially gifted at teaching students how to write: poetry, essays, etc. We haven't found a school with a better writing curriculum. Our sons also have learned across the board in every area of academics. The families at Diegueno are lovely, and our sons have really enjoyed their classmates. We highly recommend Diegueno Country School!

We have been incredibly fortunate to find a school for all of our boys (we have had our kids enter as early as kindergarten and go all the way through to 6th grade..so experience with each grade level) that works tirelessly to instill the cultural values, academic rigor, attention to public speaking and focus on the arts that we as a family attempt to instill at home.

We have been at Diegueno Country School for over seven years now with all of our kids and could not be more pleased with our experience. The teaching staff is like family and they have helped us navigate all aspects of our kids learning differences and needs. Throughout it all, the family at Diegueno is focusing on creating "good humans" with a global mindset.

Our experience with the 7th grade private school application process was again another excellent feather in Diegueno's cap. We were so lucky to have a team who could help us navigate the nuances of each private school and help us find the right home for each of the kids.

In all, we couldn't recommend Diegueno highly enough for families who are looking at a strong academic experience that focuses on helping create the foundation of "globally focused good humans".

Oh to be a child again....I wish I had a school like Diegueño.

We fell in love with Diegueño six years ago when we toured the first time, and sending our children there was the best decision we made as parents. It’s a family atmosphere, the faculty embrace each student in an individualized manner, they channel each child’s unique academic talents to foster excellence.

The administration and faculty are second to none. They navigated the most unique environment (COVID) in educational history with utmost professionalism and stellar communication. We remain beyond impressed.

Our children are thriving personally, academically and socially. We couldn’t be happier.

One of our sons has learning differences, and the school has supported him and us. To the extent our doctors and therapists have made suggestions, the school has implemented the necessary modifications. Both of our sons continue to grow and thrive at Diegueno.

Posted: September 30, 2017

Diegueno is a close-knit community, and bullying is not tolerated. The students are taught character and values. Any issues are quickly and completely addressed.

Posted: September 30, 2017

The students are given all of their homework assignments on a Friday with a full weekend + the next school week to work on everything. The homework supports their learning and is just the right amount. Our sons complete most of their homework during in-school study hall, so they never do any homework over the weekend. They often do some homework at home during the week, but it is never an overwhelming amount.

Posted: September 30, 2017

The teachers at Diegueno are the best!!! They are nurturing, well-educated, gifted at teaching, academically challenging, and all with a growth mindset. Our sons love their teachers, miss them terribly over the summer, and can't wait to be with them again during the school year. The Diegueno teachers each specialize: several teachers in math, others in science, others in language arts, etc. So the students benefit from each teacher's expertise, along with a very small student-teacher ratio. We are so thankful and happy with the teachers!

Posted: September 30, 2017

Our school has a great reputation for creating well-rounded students. Character is just as important as academics. The students are taught with integrity, compassion and respect, and these qualities are cultivated in our students. This year, our school has also introduced two new programs -
Mindfully Empowered and Growth Mindset trainings - to further develop character and to create strong, mindful, grounded, gritty, well-rounded students.

Yes, our Head of School and our Director of Student Affairs are very effective. They are responsive, brilliant, kind, helpful, inspiring leaders. They create a magical school: hiring the best teachers, finding great families and students, constantly looking for ways to improve, selecting extraordinary curricula and ensuring the whole school thrives. In addition, they stay in close communication with middle and high schools leaders, to assist our students in bridging to the next level.

Diegueno is our dream school! Our sons both LOVE school, and they are excelling across the board academically. In addition, and even more importantly, they are joyfully taught to think, to write, to speak and to learn. We wake every day - so thankful our children can attend this dream school!

We came to Diegueno Country School mid-year, as we realized our youngest daughter needed a stronger academic and positive social environment. We looked at all of the top elementary schools in San Diego County and finally found Diegueno. What a find it was! From the very first moment, we knew we had found the perfect place! This was later confirmed by BOTH of our daughters during a shadow day. Long story short, we immediately moved both daughters to Diegueno. Mid-year moves can be tough, but the “family” at Diegueno welcomed both of our girls with open arms. Our girls are truly thriving in all aspects, as Diegueno addresses the whole child to create a challenging, yet nurturing environment.

We have never encountered a more dedicated group than the staff at Diegueno. It truly is a family that is dedicated to turning young people into fabulous life-long learners. It is academically challenging, yet compassionate and caring. The one area that truly stands out is that they create “communicators” in all respects. The students from Diegueno are ALWAYS the top writers, in addition they verbally engage in a confident and mature manner. We attribute this to an inspiring environment where students are encouraged to write
and deliver speeches, poetry and performances.

We have all heard “it takes a village to raise a child”, Diegueno + parents is the village that my children needed. To the Cole family and the entire staff… THANK YOU!

Diegueno Country School prepared my son with tools which set him equal to and ahead of his peers. The foundation of knowledge, reading, writing, arithmetic, creative thinking, and being a good citizen is solid. The opportunities to learn individually and through group environments created unique experiences to assist in problem solving and working with others. The leadership of Diegueno Country School is focused on maintaining a high quality teaching staff which equips these children with the life lessons to succeed positively, academically, and socially into their future selves.

This school is the most amazing school! The location, the teachers, the parents and children are all kind and brilliant! The one on one attention to the kids, the love of learning that my son has can never be replicated in a public school setting! We choose to pay to have our kids in school now...give them the love of learning that Diegueno creates for the kids! We believe that giving our kids the best future success starts now...and our incredible school models kindness, leadership and supports children to be their own unique leader in the world! I wish I had this school when I was growing up! No school in all of San Diego or Southern California can even compare with our school! My daughter will be joining Kindergarten in the Fall...we love our school!

Diegueno is the village that raised our three sons over a decade. Diegueno shaped our children. All of us. They built a foundation. Shared in our struggles and our victories. Who our three children are, who they are growing up to be, includes the teachers and administration of Diegueno...Is because of them. From a Midsummer's' Night Dream to The Pushcart Wars. From Jane Goodall to Singapore Math to Roman Legions riding horseback on stage. Only Diegueno. The depth of the emotion, the strength of the commitment, the breadth of the love. The confidence we have, the love of poetry and the arts, the passion we have for people and kindness and goodness, for learning and discovery and theater...it all was seeded and nurtured by them. Because they all knew what to give us. And they did. We will be forever grateful for Diegueno Country School.

Our family had children at Diegueno for 10 years. During that time, my kids received a fabulous educational foundation that is serving them well in high school, and that they will take with them to college. The environment at the school is incredibly loving and nurturing -- my children really felt that Diegueno was their second home, and the teachers were members of their extended family. They felt respected and challenged, and exceptionally well-prepared for any school they chose to attend afterward. An outstanding experience.

From the very first time you see this school, you will know it is unlike any other place around. The environment the faculty and staff have crafted is devoted to the notion of individuality within community, safety within adventure, and love and respect above all else. My children have thrived since arriving at what we really consider to be their home away from home. Of course there are rigorous expectations, but that is part of what I wanted for my children. I think kids are capable of amazing things, when they are given the tools to succeed. Diegueno feeds children with knowledge to grow, loves them with patience to be kind, and holds them up to the light to see themselves develop into strong, intelligent, creative contributors to a greater society.

I've been a GATE certified teacher for 12 years.I was disappointed by the lack of rigor provided for students with advanced skills. The teachers are kind, but, the work my kids brought home wasn't reflective of the academically rigorous environment Diegueno claimed to provide. We're now at another private school & the difference in the quality of work is incredible.Comparing the 2 schools has confirmed my belief that Diegueno failed to challenge our kids.Another draw-back is its size.At first, we thought that a small environment would be ideal. Now,while we recognize that a small school may be great for little ones,it isn t for older children.Social opportunities are limited as are important activities such as language, sports & music.Other private schools include these enrichment activities as part of their instructional school day.As far as the admin., we were thoroughly disappointed in the lack of leadership provided by the Cole family & their mishandling of issues relating to students & staff throughout the year.As both an educator & parent, I wouldn't recommend this school to prospective families.I firmly believe you can find a higher quality education elsewhere. We certainly have.

Diegueno is a wonderful, magical school that is truly unique in so many aspects. We were at another private school in La Jolla for preschool as well as a year in a highly-rated public elementary school in Carmel Valley/Del Mar neighborhood. Yet, Diegueno is exceptional in so many aspects. It starts with the dedicated teachers and administration. The leadership of the school is passionate about creating a rich learning environment that is both highly stimulating. This is a school where the children find math "fun" and science "cool". The language arts program is well-known and deemed to be exceptional in every aspect. The curriculum is highly rigorous and personalized for each child. This is our third year at the school and each year has gotten better. When you visit the school, you'll see a campus full of happy, well-adjusted kids who are being guided to care about othe people, the environment and the world around them. There is turnover at the school - both among teachers adn students - but there is careful review behind each change and has been for the better. We feel very blessed to be a part of this great community.

Posted: July 18, 2012

Because Diegueno is a family run, private, and non accredited school, the administration can make any decision they want without accountability. If you have a middle of the road child, you will not encounter any problems. However, if you have a child who is a slower learner, accelerated learner, or has unique traits there will be issues early on. In my child's class, several kids as early as 1st grade had to be tutored due to academic pressure, while, paradoxically, other kids who performed above average did not get individuated instruction. Also, there are so many "performances" the kids prepare for during the year, they often lose valuable classroom instruction time. The admin is too focused on "showmanship" to keep the wealthy families impressed. The greatest downfall of the school is definitely the lack of protocol. There are no clear guidelines for how to handle any situation- they make it up as they go. Additionally, the years we were at the school, teachers were let go on the spot, children not invited back the following year for unclear reasons, and financial aid pulled despite promises made. If not for the teachers, the school would be a disappointment on all levels.

We love this school and feel so blessed to be a part of te Diegueno community. Academically this school is challenging. If your child is not intelligent, this is not the school for you. The programs are above and beyond anything in the county. The children learn to be caring, compassionate individuals who make a difference. The staff and teachers are superb. We would highly recommend this school to anyone who wants a great all around environment for their child as long as the child is academically advancec.
