My son had a wonderful K year here. The small class size allows for truly personalized learning, as well as great social emotional development support. I appreciate that I know he is learning from 2 trained teachers as opposed to parent volunteers public schools often depend on to supplement the 1 classroom teachers.

In addition to typical curriculum, the kids have daily specialists including art, music, Spanish, PE, library, gardening and drama. They have monthly field trips and a very active school community with tons of opportunities for parent/family involvement. And there is a big focus as well on social emotional learning. I have not seen any issues with bullying, problems with disruptions in the class, etc. Recently we ran into a few 4th graders that are the K's reading buddy class and the "big kids" were so sweet talking to and playing with my son and his friends. It really epitomizes what we have seen - it is just a great student body and small enough it really feels like a community.

I have seen comments about the administration being bad but that hasn't been my experience. I have always gotten responses to any email or call and they do a good job communicating. And I love that the teachers make themselves available for parents to reach out directly. The principal even stands outside every morning greeting all the students by name!

This school is AWFUL. Coming from an AMI Montessori school I was attracted to the 'Montessori-hybrid' learning as well as the large beautiful campus which offered plenty of outdoors. However, the school and teachers itself leave something to be desired. And this is NOT Montessori method at all (we previously came from an AMI school in Northern CA). My daughter (who is quite literally the happiest person I know) would come home crying every single day in my daughter's class, giving reports of the teacher including things like "crumpling up her work into a ball and throwing it into the trash, telling kids that could not speak, raising her voice and very strict harsh rules that she was scared to do something wrong - personality changed overnight. It was so bad that the parent's took two children out of the classroom because kids were so upset. The 'extra curricular' activities were disappointing as well. The music teacher often lectured and expected kids to act and 'perform' music in very specific ways and scolding them and 'throwing out of class' of they didn't comply (e.g. my first grade son was thrown out of class every day for 8 weeks for 'not paying attention and looking around') Needless to say, both kids "hate" music, even through we have a musical family (father was opera singer, etc) My son's first grade teacher definitely checked out mid-year and was not accommodating to my son's special needs. I also found there is a handful of parents who have been together from preschool and really have formed a click, which makes it hard for newcomers to be included and children left out of playdates, etc. Avoid this school at all costs - there are much better options in area.

We love this school--our child missed two full years of school due to an illness and we attribute the care/individual attention this school was able to provide with bringing him up to grade level and just as importantly, helping him transition back to a school environment. Ms. Hayes (6th grade) and Ms. Deb (5th grade) are absolute gems and have both changed our children's lives for the better. Love this sweet school.

the school does deal with bullying 99% of the kids are just friendly to each other occasionally you'll have one smarmy little kid and they generally get put in check pretty quick if it continues staff will absolutely be made aware and it will be remedied they do not tolerate bullying

I would say it's the best possible School you could send your child to in the area personally from what I have seen and my experience and watching my child go through the first three years of their school we are only homeschooling this year because of the coveted business but certainly plan on returning after everything is as close to normal as possible

Our child went EDC from 1st through 4th grade, it was an outstanding foundation for him. The teachers were all super caring and took the extra effort to make sure that our child got the attention he needed for his advanced abilities. The small class sizes and frequent communication with the teachers were amazing. We could not have higher praise for the school, the campus, and the staff. Sadly, we moved out of the area, otherwise, we would have never left.

So far the experience has been outstanding. the small classes give students great personal attention and The teachers are outstanding. my daughter loves the school and is excited to go to school everyday, she comes home and says how much she likes the teachers and how kind everyone in her classes are. The campus is absolutely beautiful, and the level of education has exceeded my expectations.

This is our second year at ECDS. We have been happy with all aspects of the school thus far. I was so impressed last year with how well my daughter's teacher was able to tell me where my daughter was at academically and socially. Last year, at the parent teacher meeting her teacher discussed where she was at with learning her sounds(down to the specific letters) as well as what letters she was still working on with her writing. Her teacher in public school would not have been able to give me detailed information like that because they don't have the ability to spend that much time with each child. I am so grateful for the small class size and the ability of the teachers to give individualized attention when needed. When issues come up between children, they are addressed immediately, so bullying is virtually non-existent at the school. There is also an overall encouragement from the staff and teachers to support each child in their development. I see how this example of encouragement and support imbued by the teachers and staff flows down to the students and how they learn to support and encourage each other. The school could market itself better for larger enrollment, but for now if anything as a parent, I see that as a benefit. The school year includes art, music, drama, technology and Spanish as well as library time and PE, in addition to regular class learning time. I think ECDS does strive to give a child a well-rounded education while also teaching them life skills and helping them begin to blossom into confident young people. We look forward to seeing our daughter continue to learn and grow at this school.

From around 2 years into our attendance at ECDS I noticed a steady decline in the school. My children attended this school from first grade through 6th. They are now in middle and high school. Since about 2014 we noticed enrollment on a steady decline and teacher talent decrease. Some teachers there are still great but there are several that should retire, however I don't think the school is able to effectively recruit new, quality teachers. The administration is abrasive, unethical and disturbingly inept. Enrollment numbers are so low in some classes that children have few social options and disruptive students are more amplified. Some parents bring their children hoping small classes will benefit a child with special needs but the teachers are not credentialed or trained for those students, leaving typical students to fend for themselves. Once you choose a school for whatever reason, as a parent you don't want to change and disrupt your kid's life. I suggest you not start at this school because I think there are better options.

There are still several seasoned teachers at this school committed to children's development however there are many that shouldn't be there any longer and new ones with little experience or training.

ECDS takes a strong stance against bullying and provides effective supervision during all meals and activities so. Any mistreatment of another student is dealt with efficiently and effectively by the teachers and the school's principal.

The small class sizes allow the teachers to provide some students with advanced mathematics or grammatical programs while simultaneously working with any student that may struggle with a certain subject.

Much of the teaching is accomplished in the classroom so that work outside of the classroom is kept to a minimum, particularly for the younger students. This is only possible due to the efficiency with which the teachers are capable of teaching the students, no matter their ability level.

As a child, I attended this school for over 5 years and attribute much of my personal growth and learning to the time that I spent there. As a robotics engineering student at a top engineering university I got the chance to return to ECDS this past year while on vacation, and was both shocked and delighted by what I found. Many of the teachers and staff who had taught me some ten years prior were still teaching and maintaining the standard of excellence that I have come to associate with the Encinitas Country Day School. Even now, as I approach both graduate school and my future career, I can only recall happy memories and effective learning from my time spent at this excellent institution of learning and development.

My children have thrived at ECDS, both in academics and in their strong community. They have learned respect and compassion to teachers, students and families. They have an amazing vocabulary and are excelling in all areas due to their exceptional teachers and small class size. They have fun, they feel accepted. I don't know any other school where the families can actually walk their children into their classrooms each day, allowing for families to know each others, for kids to feel a loving community in this beautiful campus. I would recommend this school to my friends and family.

ECDS has shown all the negatives to avoid in private education. Poor teachers, horrible administration and a beautiful campus. It’s a shame that this beautiful facility with great potential is being run by an unprofessional handful of teachers and a very incompetent head of school.
We wanted to like it, we left. Best decision ever for our child.
We work hard and make a priority to send our child to private school to excel academically and emotionally in a nurturing environment that leads to success. This school is not the place for it.
It’s a waste of your money.

Shocked to find this website. I wish I had seen it before as I agree to most of the criticism posted here. Our son had the most absolute terrible experience at this school. He sat in time out facing a wall after taking in class, a punishment gang is dated and unacceptable. When I approached the teacher she said: if his desk is facing the wall he is most likely not to talk. He was removed to the corner of the classroom.
My other son was in 5th grade and his teacher called the kids “ child” in a very rude tone and made reference to their future and lack of abilities to thrive in lige if they did not do well. Such as:
“You are in a private school, if you waste your time here you will not amount to much, you will be a nobody” terrible remarks. We tried to converse with both teachers but we were received with a very rude attitude. No one should ever punish a child to face a wall and humiliate a child in classroom. In addition is horrible to make personal remarks to kids success in their adult life if they are struggling to learn. Real learning should be promoted through care, respect and kindness. We left mid year- thank God! Best decision ever!!

We wanted to like ECDS, it’s very convenient located between our home and ok our way to work. I am a professor at college therefore being in the education field lead me to pull my kids out. After seeing so many wrong things happening I had to make a change. The teachers, in particular 5th grade was rude and made several condescending reabria towards some children who had learning differences. My child does not have learning differences but she was shocked and sadden by hearing this. When we approached the head of School we were greeted with gossip where she talked about the other families and those kids to explain teacher behavior. Absolutely disgusting. Under no circumstances another family history should be discussed with another family.
This school is not worth it’s money nor has good ethical values.

Encinitas Country Day is located in a beautiful piece of land and has a very beautiful campus. That is where all the positives end. From a poor administration leadership and unprofessional conduct from the teachers we were shocked to see that a school like this is running. We left after two years, our daughter is thriving at another private school. Seeing now how a professional school operates is wonderful. Encinitas Country Day is not a good school. If you are looking for a private education research and you will find a better school. Seeing how many teachers are unhappy and frustrated at ECDS was an eye opening. We are glad we left.

Experience at the school has been average. Like all things, there are good and bad points. Overall, the education is good but there are challenges with the administration, split teachers in some classrooms, and an art curriculum that isn't as strong this year.

I absolutely love Ms Lise, my daughter's kinder teacher. I have met many of the other teachers as well. There are a lot of extracurricular options as well. Everyone I have talked with there has been supportive and welcoming. The music teacher, Mrs Crawford, is amazing, and my daughter adores Coach Piazza, the PE teacher. They have a great team.

Principal Lehmann is welcoming and warm. He really gets on the kid's level, greeting them at least once a week out front with high 5s and letting them hit him with water balloons at the fall festival. He went so far as to catch my daughter's balloon and smash it into himself. The front desk staff is welcoming and warm and knows each child by name. The owner puts her soul into the school.

I have a neurotypical child that so far hasn't expressed any special learning needs but I think the Montessori approach the school uses is beneficial to most learning styles. The kids can focus on what they enjoy and learn through different hands on methods that are made fun.

ECDS has been nothing but a positive experience for my son. He is headed to high school with the ability to take responsibility for his education. He is not intimidated by the knowledge of others but actively seeks out way to gain that knowledge for himself. I have been very impressed with every teacher that has had a role in educating him. We are extremely grateful to ECDS for the environment that they have created to nurture all of the children who come through their gates.

We've had a fantastic experience with ECDS, we really appreciate the teachers and their approach to educating the children. Our daughter loves it there and wants to continue to stay there as long as possible. It's a great family environment, as well as a wonderful campus.

Our older daughter just graduated 8th grade, she started at the school in 4th grade. The smaller classroom settings gave her the individual support and encouragement to advance academically and socially. We feel she is well prepared for high school. She is entering high school enrolled in advanced coursework (mathematics, languages, sciences) and will bring the maturity and confidence she developed at ECDS.

Our younger daughter will be in 7th grade, she was enrolled in 3rd grade. She loves going to school: she enjoys the classes, field trips, after school sport programs and theatre. All of these activities helped her to explore her interests, become well-rounded and become confidence in her abilities.

I really appreciate what ECDS has done for our daughters and recommend its elementary and middle school to other parents.

It's just different here. ECDS is a small community of caring, enthusiastic, and engaged parents, teachers, and staff. The culture is rich with the arts, academics, sports all fully supported in an environment that is deeply focused on the whole child. The children on campus are visibly happy, respectful & kind. While I see many surprisingly negative reviews on this site, after being at this school for several years between our three children, I would encourage any prospective families to tour the school to see for yourself the difference at ECDS... and during your tour, ask to speak with current families about their experiences, as I personally know many families are happy to share their heartfelt recommendations for this unique, outstanding school. It is just truly a remarkable place!

The school year is ending and with sadness and also integrity we rate this school with 1 star. Its important to have a safe place for parents to voice their concerns and this website is a great resource. We are honestly rating our experience in hopes that this can help other parents choose their kids school. We found that ECDS lacks in student, teacher support and also curriculum content. Lines are crossed over and over. I expected more from private school. It's a big commitment for our family to choose private school, therefore it needs to be worth it- we did not see that here. It's ran by an inefficient set of values and schooling principles.

My daughters teacher was very rude and arrogant to
the class. She often played favorites and my daughter felt bad for the children that were not her favorites. She even made some kids cry. I am happy I was able
to witness this behavior with my own eyes and see what my daughter was telling me all year. We shared our views with the teacher and she was arrogant to my husband and I. The previous teachers were fine but this year this teacher was awful. We are moving to another school. Looking forward to 6th grade somewhere else.

We've been at ECDS since 2010; our boys love their school and so do we. We've been very pleased with their education, year after year. Small classes, dedicated & talented teachers in each grade, and a unique learning environment that has prepared our boys well for high school next year.
We are genuinely grateful to the incredible teachers and staff at ECDS that have made our time here so amazing. We're going to miss this amazing school next year.

Our child currently attends ECDS and we are not returning next year. We are sad to see that many reviews share similar concerns to ours in regards to administration. We are also happy to read that many people like the school. It would simply be terrible is no one would. We find the positive reviews to belittle the negative reviews posted and therefore invalidate those who are honestly sharing their views. Its sad. Its wonderful to have a platform to share experiences for parents who care about their children education. This school did not serve our child well period. We found that the administration and numbers of students declining yearly speak volumes for the school future. We wish ECDS the very best and hope they can improve because so far they are not.

Encinitas Country Day School is amazing - plain and simple. There is no one school which is right for every child/family, but if you're considering ECDS, as a current parent with three children enrolled at the school, I URGE you to schedule a campus tour and see for yourself what makes it such an incredible school. Do not allow a few less than stellar/malicious reviews tarnish your opinion.

Visit the school, ask questions, meet the staff, see the teachers & students in action and decide for yourself.

While review sites can be informative and helpful in some cases, they can also be used as a platform to cause intentional harm in other cases.

Please give your child the chance to enjoy a truly unique, enriched, amazing academic experience at ECDS after judging for yourself, firsthand, what the school is all about. It really is a gem, here in our own community!

No homework for PreK/Kinder and then as the grades increase, the workload gradually increases as well. Usually, homework serves as a review of topics covered in class and can be completed within 20-30 minutes per evening; with the exception of occasional book reports & research papers.

This school falls short in many areas from being even close to a GREAT private school. My daughter was at ECDS for 5 years in elementary school, she is now at another very good and respected private middle school in the area and its by far not true what the review below states: "Most kids from ECDS are better prepared than other kids from other private or higher ranked public schools." It leaves me questioning if this review was posted from a staff member. ECDS does not prepare kids better than any other school period. It falls short in academic support, teacher support, communication to parents and in handling issues when they arise. We share the same sentiment has the majority of reviews posted.

I see that there have been a variety of negative reviews about this school and there are some people who have not had great experiences and that's a shame, but I would also like to show the positive of the school as well. I have 2 children one who is still at the school and the other who has moved on to another private school after being at ECDS for 7 years. Were there moments or situations over the years that could have been handled better then they were? Yes, but you will find that things happen anywhere you send your child. I wondered throughout the time my kids were at ECDS if the money I was spending on their education had been well spent, wondered about the outcome of having my kids there. As my older child has moved on and is now in the mix with kids from other good private schools as well as high ranking public schools, I see how valuable the experience at ECDS has been. My child as well as others from ECDS are hands down academically stronger and well prepared for moving on. I have not only witnessed this in my own child, I have seen it in peers, as well as other kids who have moved on and excelled. For those parents who have not had a great experience at this school, not every school is going to match the needs of every child. If that's the case, then you need to find a school that meets the needs for your child. Overall, I couldn't be happier with the outcome of having my kids at this school. If I had the chance to do it again, I wouldn't have changed a thing.

Every experience is unique to each person. Some people might like this school. We did not. We don't invalidate the good reviews posted here but, we agree with the majority, the poor reviews. Its dishonest for the people who review this school with 5 stars to underestimate the bad experiences posted below(hope these are posted from real parents not school employees to achieve higher rates). We have found from our 4 year experience at ECDS and volunteering that the school has been declining every year in many areas. We only have experience with elementary school not the middle school. It was also concerning to see teachers leaving mid year in our sons class without notice.

The teachers we meet at ECDS were nice and kind, they have very little/ no support from the school. Investing in private school for me requires more than good, nice, kind teachers. It involves a community and governance that supports students, teachers and curriculum. It involves good classroom ratio. We did not find any of these at Encinitas Country Day, for that reason we honestly rate our experience at this school with two stars. There are many parents that love it, we recommend you research it.

We wanted a nurturing, loving and academic school for our youngest child. We decided on private because we assumed he would have better leadership in classroom and attention. Our child is very active like many are and often times hard to stay on task. He is also very young. This school put him in time out during music and made him seat outside class most times. Its shaming and wrong. We talked to principle he never got back to us. The teacher had no idea what to do, the academic advisor does not work for the school and there is no follow up. The teachers complain when they see an issue they don't know how to deal with rather than having a plan in place. Our son is not a disruptive child or misbehaved, he is young and had lots of energy. They shamed him by making him seat on corner and outside classes. He was starting to not like school. They should be reviewed by the department of education. Sadly its a private school and they can do whatever they want. Our child attends another private school that is a REAL school.

This school has a beautiful campus and classrooms, however there is more to a school than its appearance. We wanted to LOVE ECDS but sadly this was not the case. The reviews below indicate the school environment a large number of unsatisfied people and small minority of happy parents(or staff members that rate the school). I would recommend that if you are considering this private school to research it and ask in the area what people think, previous experiences, incidents and reputation. Most class sizes drop by less than 50% after 3rd grade. Our children did not benefit from this school.

Our daughters went to school at Montessori Arts and Sciences in Carlsbad for kindergarten and first grade, and when the school closed we took them to another small Montessori school called KidsTown in Vista, CA. My husband and I decided that while we loved a Montessori education, we really felt that a hybrid of some sorts would be better. We were looking for Montessori trained teachers, access to Montessori materials, but a larger school that had more of a traditional set up regarding classroom structure and a school that was accredited.

We are nearing the end of our third year at this school and I couldn't be more pleased. My daughters love going to school every day and are thriving academically and socially. The teachers are excellent and the focus on character building is such a plus. I can honestly say that the students at this school are the nicest, most respectful kids I've ever met.

It is unfortunate that some parents feel the need to try to convince people that their experience is the only true one. Not every school is a perfect fit for every child, but I’m in a somewhat unique position of having two daughters in the same grade and in different classes, and all I know is that both of my children have continued to excel academically and have always loved their teachers and classmates. This is the most important thing to me.

I encourage anyone who is considering this school to visit. Most families with students at the school have had their children there for their entire elementary education - and early middle school. I believe that is the greatest testimony anyone could ask for.

We'd also like to thank our past and present parents who know us and have taken time to share their experience at ECDS. While it is hard to make everyone happy, we certainly wish we could. Therefore we reflect on each review and use the ones that identify a genuine concern as a spur to ongoing school improvement. To address a few factually inaccurate reviews we'd like to offer the following information and provide links to evidence. First, ECDS is Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). http://directory.acswasc.org/directory-searchlist.php This means that our organization (including the qualifications of our principal, academic success staff, and faculty), curriculum and instruction (including our core and enrichment classes), accommodations and professional support to assure student personal and academic success, and school resources have been reviewed by the entire school community, and submitted to the accrediting commission. Our Self-Study and evidence were then reviewed during a three-day visit by a WASC team sent to review evidence, meet with community groups and report their findings to the commission. The school year is coming to an end and we are sad to review ECDS with only two stars. Some of the teachers are great however they are not happy and often complain about the administration, salary and the owner social skills. If you are interested in this school please set up a meeting with the principle Mr.L and the owner Mrs. Porterfiled and make a decision. There is no nurse's office if a child gets sick. Our child had fever one day and was waiting for us in class and, another time in front office bench. Enrollment is down and this year we will not return. I am certain there are better private schools in the area no school is 100% perfect but when you pay high tuition you want too make sure that if a problem arises the school will address it. This was not the case at this school.

We are sad and happy we found greatschools.org. We did not know this website existed. We are sad because I wish we had seen the previous bad reviews that are similar to our experience at ECDS: unresponsive administration and unprofessional leadership from the owner and principle , poor curriculum (no science until 6th grade), poor music program and, some teachers are unqualified (such as drama teachers. They were parents at the school and once the drama teacher left in the middle
of the school year, they took his position. They have no previous academic experience and now are in charge of the drama /music program. This should not happen at a private school that charges over $15,000 a year. We are happy and grateful for this website. We are pulling our kids out this year and moving them to another school. It can only be better.

Our daughter attended this school for three years. She started in kindergarten. We did not like ECDS. We are commited to private education and small classes. However our money was not well invested in this school. I did not know this website existed, it's a great place for parents to share their honest opinions. I am surprised that the school is using this platform as an advertising in the comment below- not a good sign .
Initially we were happy with WASC accreditation because when we enrolled it was the year ecds applied for it. After they received their certification the fired the academic coordinator that was hired to get their accreditation. We rate it as two stars. Our child now attends another private school and we are happy with our change. This school needs a total renovation inside it's administration.

I've been at this school for a total of nine years. For this reason, I find it very important for viewers to read this post. I've experienced so much at this school, but unfortunately my final result is negative. Encinitas Country Day School lacks curriculum in so many areas. The administration is very dysfunctional and unsupportive of students. This is because the staff are uncaring and too busy with their needs. I took sports here before, never got better. I have taken Spanish here, never learned how to speak the basic vocabulary. I have taken science here, never got a core academic understanding because they only offer science in grades 6 +. The school has eight eighth graders and fifteen seventh graders. It truly is a small school, but that doesn't make it bad. What makes the school bad is the social and academic environment. When I look back at my experience here, the students were SO judgmental. For this reason, it was difficult for some students to make friends. The students (and teachers) will tell you it has a supportive, warm environment, with a strong academic purpose. I remember teachers trying to be as convincing as possible in the classroom explaining why to stay at the school because it is "so great". Well, it really isn't great. Once you do leave then you realize how much you missed out on. If you ask me, my final advice to you is do not send your children here. This wasn't the best for me and isn't the best for everyone there. Please consider searching for other schools. I promise you are not missing out on anything at all.

This school was very disappointing. Many families attend ECDS for free because they go to Self Realization Center in Cardiff because, the owner is an active follower of the center. All of the families that have a scholarship do not need any financial help. The administration is unprofessional, many red flags. We pulled our son this school year and are happy with our decision- our son attends another private school. Do not let the beauty of the campus lead you to stay. Its truly all it has is a nice campus. It falls short on all other areas.

We are very involved parents. We wanted a private school and a nice campus with good programs, our daughters attended ECDS for two years. We are committed to private education however this school offers no Science class until 6th grade. Our oldest daughter had science once a month occasionally and not on a weekly basis.Most private schools offer a rich curriculum in science, arts and music that is fundamental, this is not the case at Encinitas Country Day.

My son attended Encinitas Country Day for 4 years. We felt in love with the campus however the school turned out to be our worst experience. Some of the teachers are good but most of them are unqualified. The higher governance is very unprofessional. I am a college professor and I am sadly writing this review. Most teachers do not give lessons and hand out work sheets. There is very little instruction.

We moved our son here for the preschool program and have been seriously impressed. As very involved parents we researched and visited numerous schools in the area and Encinitas Country Day School offered more than any other. From the numerous options for tuition, the special dance and music programs, to the nature rich campus and the highly educated teachers we knew this was the school we had been looking for. With lots of fresh air, dirt, grass, fruit trees and vegetable gardens the campus provides the perfect setting for learning. We have dropped in at random times on different days and each time we were met with consistently professional (and fun) child-teacher interactions. With the Montessori-based education combined with the traditional influence our son has really thrived both academically and socially. Any questions we’ve had are addressed directly and effectively. The teachers are all noticeably happy to be working at the school. Many members of the staff have had their own children attend and do well after graduating. During our volunteer opportunities the genuine dedication and care shown toward each student is impressive. At almost a year since we moved him our son still calls it his “friendship school” and begs us to let him stay after pick up time. We are baffled by the previous negative reviews since every interaction with the school has been fantastic. There’s a real sense of community and belonging with this school. We are so grateful we found such a wonderful environment for our son to learn and grow. If you are considering a private school, then Encinitas Country Day School is one you should visit and see for yourself.

We moved our children over to this school for 4th grade & Kindergarten this year we truly couldn't be happier!

After exploring several local private school options, Encinitas Country Day School offered the most comprehensive, well-rounded academic programs complete with Spanish language instruction, Art, Music, Technology & Science labs, and Physical Education which includes Taekwondo.

In Kindergarten & First Grade the instruction is Montessori-based with a Traditional overlay and then in 2nd- 8th grades it is more Traditional instruction with a Montessori influence.

The teachers and staff are truly remarkable! They are warm, caring and you can tell they truly care about the children. The breadth and depth of the curriculum far surpasses what is being taught in the public schools and the social environment is uniquely warm as this is a 'friendship school'; which means there is truly no-bullying whatsoever. The culture is just different and you can feel it. The campus is, without a doubt, stunning. Situated on the picturesque San Elijo Lagoon the school is surrounded by nature. The buildings are all well-thought out and each classroom is fresh & bright with natural light.

I can't imagine what inspired earlier negative reviews because we take our children's education very seriously and we wholeheartedly LOVE this school & cannot recommend highly enough! In fact, we are moving our youngest child over to the preschool in the Fall! Give yourself the opportunity to check it out personally and I'm sure you'll be impressed!

Our family relocated from NYC to San Diego and enrolled our child in this school this year. Our son was complaining that the music teacher would show videos. We requested a meeting and the principal-he never replied. We thought this school was kind, loving and academic. Its not! Its poorly managed with unqualified teachers that struggle to blend a montessori approach with a traditional setting. We are pulling out child out and starting a new private school in January.

My son went ti this school in second grade and at the end of the year he was below grade average and the teacher never communicated that to us during meetings. He struggled with reading and when I approached the teacher saying he was struggling she brushed it off. My son was having private tutoring on the side and the school never took the time to help him.
The teacher was always very overwhelmed and aloof to the kids and their needs. Their music program and PE are a joke. This school is not a good private school- very poor academics, qualified teachers and horrible administration for a very high price.

Our daughter was at this school last year. We had the worst experience. The administration is horrible. They have a principle that is not qualified in the education field- he merely works there as a assistant to the owner who is very rude. The owner of school does whatever parents want. The school has no science, may daughter only had 4 science classes all year and they were: watching movies. They claim to be a alternative school and character building but this school is horrible. The owner son lives in the school in a trailer parked behind the basketball court. The trailer sits there all year long.
We moved to another private school in Solana Beach and could not be happier.
DO NOT ENROLL your child here- do your homework and make sure you choose a school that has children's well being as their top priority.

We have been at this school for 5 years. The administration runs it like a business and it takes no consideration the well being of the kids. Some classes in same grade have a total of 10 kids and another same grade has 18. Parents choose the teacher and the school takes no consideration classroom dinamics . We just pulled out son out because he was in a class with all boys while the others grade had a mix of boys and girls. It makes no sense. It's awful!
Search and you will find much better private schools in area.

After 4 years at ECDS we saw the school changing from a nice community school to a terribly managed school. Budget cuts and teachers are getting fired and replaced by unexperienced newer teachers. Our is at another private school. We left because his teacher was very rude and mean to him. She as edgy and always arrived late to class.
The new private school we attend is a dream and when we were at interview and said we came from ECDS we heard that many families leave due to problems.

Since my daughter attended ECDS three years ago there has been bad incidents yearly. In her first year there was a incident with families that left the school. The second year another group of families left. The school principal has no leadership nor experience in education. We left one year ago.
My daughter's teacher was always complaining about her work and lack of support from administration, she complained about her salary as well often. It was disappointing. She also showed no patience towards the kids. We saw my daughters teacher playing favorites with some children and acting mean to others. Very unprofessional manners. It's a beautiful campus but save your time and money. Do not stay at this school. The only good thing is campus and landscape.
The teachers use a Montessori technique that is lead by the child. There is little or, no instruction. It's not true Montessori. Children go through a routine of laborious clerical sheets of work with little instruction.
It's not worth it's price. The director of school runs it like a business and has no interest in children. I am surprised that there not more low reviews. Since we left the school we heard about its poor reputation so we decided to review it.

Both of my sons attended ECDS for three years. The administration is not professional and there is no guidance for teachers. There was a serious incident and 5 families left in the middle
Of the year. My sons teacher also left due to the fact she was not an American citizen.
We were very disappointed with the ethic part of curriculum and overal administration and governance.
In a private school setting it's important to have good professional manners and communication to parents.
We left the year our teacher left and our children attend la jolla country day and are thriving.

We really REALLY wanted to like this school. Our child went here for a year, but the negative atmosphere simply wasn't for us. I give it four stars for curriculum and small class size and beautiful campus (and pockets of positive attitudes), but the school says it's "all about character" when it simply isn't. The staff is somewhat closed off (and a little defensive), and various teachers verge on being cold. Obviously many parents don't seem to mind, as the school has kids who have been there for years, but personally I like a teacher/teaching method that connects on varying individualized levels, with genuine caring for the students. The science program could use more (maybe it was just our child's class), and overall I expected more hands-on projects, this school being part-Montessori. Still, there is great potential here for this school to be AMAZING. It just fell short for us.

The school is amazing! The children are very happy and highly motivated. It is a very nurturing and warm environment and the Montessori Curriculum is a very nice child appropriate program. The Campus is very clean and is embedded in nature, the classrooms feel welcoming, very tidy and offer the kids such great variety to learn with the Montessori materials. The principle and the staff is also excellent, I could not be happier with having found this Gem of school.

This school is terrible. I paid top dollar to send my children here to receive an education and the teachers did not teach them anything to prepare them for adult life. I went to this school in 7th and 8th grade thinking i was going to have good academic learning and i'll find friends, but no I was wrong. Very poor communication with the staff, The teachers do not seem to care about the child's needs and they just only seem to care about meeting the right curriculum. The teacher's didn't even care that I was failing most of my classes, and i had to have a different teacher for math because my teacher didn't care that I was falling behind, but all the other kids were doing well. I got help from a teacher who is actually a GOOD teacher but she quit a year before, On a positive note, English & History was good but Math and Science failed miserably. This is a good school for lower grades like REALLY lower but 4th and over is not so good... No one in my class really cared for the school, and i feel bad for those poor parents waisting there money..(some of it's ok.) The Art and Music program is all right but the school it self is just a big skip..Poor communication, Teacher's don't really care, and the campus..eh...it's not that pretty..Sorry..

My son and daughter experienced ECDS. each classroom has a front yard so that the students can play 4 squres, soccer and even gardening. the teachers, parents and students are very friendly and considerate to my children. science, art, reading all those things are very well organized. we should back to Korea but we still remeber our ECDS.

I am a student at ECDS and I'm going into my 8th year at the school. I started at 3 years old so I know the school well. I love how teaches us to be kind to one another. All the students at my ECDS have been very nice to me. I was impressed with the sports teams and I learned a lot of new techniques. I think the academics are very strong, I learned a lot these past years. I enjoyed all the field trips we took. Next year I will be in 5th grade and I'm excited to go to Astro Camp. I really liked the science labs, I even dissected a frog last year. I am very excited that all my friends are coming back this year and I can't wait to get started.

my son had a wonderful English /History teacher who was amazing, and he was able to get through the middle school years. He had to take 10 weeks of intensive math tutoring to enter SDA freshman level yet had strong grades at the school. Socially his grade was far too small and the school is geared to younger students. My daughter had a special needs child that was unknowingly aggressive in hes friendlyness but she was scared and the school would not help her. The academics were abhorent that year and the teachers and kids corrected the work. There were 9 in the class when we pulled her out with no tuition reimbursement,but the teacher mysteriosly disappeared 6 weeks prior to the end of the school year. The principal promised to keep my daughter safe yet everyday the student would grad my child out of nowhere and we had to put her in psychotherapy. She ias a normal kid who know is thriving in public school and learning a lot, and safe.

We are new to ECDS this year and it has been an outstanding year. Our teacher is so accessible and we've had a couple conversations with their Academic Achievement person to provide our student with some enrichment choices. Our son has advanced so much this year and we know the smaller class size has helped. We love this school!

Our son has attended ECDS for two years. We have been pleased with his teachers but that is where it stops. As an educator myself, the leadership and administration is extremely poor. Lack of policies, communication, and willingness to work together is disappointing. Both the director and principal are on the defense and have very little patience and interest in dealing with issues that arise. They are reactive and not proactive when dealing with situations that need attention and evaluation.

This will be my daughter's 5th year at ECDS. We have found the school to be a nurturing, respectful and motivating environment. The curriculum is well rounded and geared to meet the needs of your child. The principal and teachers are very accessible and will take the time to talk with you regarding concerns, questions and successes. I strongly encourage anyone who is considering the school to take the tour and observe in the classrooms. The encouragement of building teams and approaching others with kindness and respect is priceless. She has thrived at ECDS, scoring far beyond her grade level in nearly all areas of academic testing and enjoying friendships that have endured her tenure there.
