If your child has special needs, I would NOT recommend this school, especially if they are younger and need an IEP. My biggest slap in the face was the special education department dropping the ball on helping my child. Their teacher was struggling with behaviors related to ADHD and ASD, and my child was also struggling academically. I was told multiple times that my child struggled to focus, follow directions, and comprehend instruction, but did better one-on-one. I hoped an IEP would provide accommodations and support. Things got fishy when I asked for an IEP meeting and was told they had to do interventions first. I eventually sent an email and got the process started. They took the maximum time, and during the evaluation, whenever my child struggled, I heard things like, “we don’t focus on kinder academics,” or that certain tests were “not necessary.” Then came the meeting. They said my child struggled to focus, follow directions, and comprehend instruction, but because they could copy classmates, “my child was fine, because at least they can copy peers.” Being able to copy other children does NOT mean a child understands what is being taught. Then I was told, “since your child does not rock back and forth or flap their hands they do not qualify.” Autism does not look the same in every child, and using stereotypes to dismiss a child’s needs is unacceptable. My child is now at a different school and is still struggling academically, but has a teacher helping advocate for an IEP. The staff treatment was also awful. My child was called a “naughty child” in front of me, and the teacher admitted they would threaten to call me if my child did not do their work, after I told them they do well with positive reinforcement. My child cried about school constantly and called it “the bad school.” It felt like they kept telling me my child was struggling while also finding reasons not to help. I understand an IEP is not automatically given because of a diagnosis, but the way this was handled was unacceptable. If your child has special needs, educate yourself, ask questions, save emails, and get things in writing. I wish I had known then what I know now. The STEAM program is amazing. They also have Project Lead the Way, which my kid loves the hands on activities and projects that enrich her learning experiences. The school provides a lot of opportunities for families to be involved at the school, from a strong PTA group to monthly STEAM nights that are educational and interactive.

This school develops strong character in its students, like integrity, compassion and respect:
The school has an "EPIC" model. Excellence, Positivity, Integrity, Character. It encourages children to be their best. Make good choices, be a positive example, invite others to join, show respect and more.

I have never met a principal more involved than Mrs. Waltermire. She somehow knows every student's name. She is also very positive and personable with parents/family members. Most days after school, she can be found helping kids at the crosswalk, smiling, Rain or shine. She is very involved and is happy to participate in all spirit days.

I am proud to send my kids to this school and be involved in the Widefield community.

I have been very pleased with Talbott STEAM Innovation School. The postive climate of the school facilities learning and the staff does a great job with communication. The administration works well together to ensure that the kids do their best. We are a proud tiger family. :)

It took my son 2 years to be put in special education and then they didn't make him go.

My son is bullied every day and my son lashes out and my son is the one who gets in trouble.

The teachers care about the students. My son's teacher refers to her class as "friends".

The STEAM program is amazing. They also have Project Lead the Way, which my kid loves. Every time I turn around, they are doing something new to support students, teachers, community. They want kids to "fail forward" so they don't simply learn how to pass a test - they are learning how to think and solve problems for themselves.
I absolutely love this school.

I have had the privilege of sending four of my sons to Talbot. The teachers and staff were always friendly, helpful, and concerned about the success and development of the students. Teachers were great at communicating with parents, and expressed the needs of the children. One of my children has Aspergers. The teachers and staff never excluded him or treated him differently. Talbot embraced him and he thrived. All of my sons have gained a great foundation at Talbot and are proud to have been Talbot Tigers

This school is horrible. They labeled my daughter, who was in kindergarten at the time. She never had a chance at that school. As soon as I moved her to a D11 school, she began to flourish. Three years later my daughter is doing well in the same D11 school and earning high grades and test scores - all because they embraced her and didn't label her as a problem child. The culture at Talbott is one of old ideas and exclusivity.
