I am writing to share my concerns regarding the Cheyenne Mountain high school golf programs selection process. My son, a returning varsity player, was cut during his senior year despite performing well during tryouts. When I requested clarification on the criteria used, I was told the process is entirely at the coach's discretion and that no written policy exists to guide these decisions.
It is concerning that students are subjected to a tryout process when the selection criteria are not objective or transparent. After outperforming several selected players, my son was given only vague justifications for his exclusion. I have escalated this to the district administration, as I believe school athletics should be held to a standard of fairness and accountability. I encourage other parents to ask for clear, written selection policies before committing to this program.

Although I felt pushed to do better academically wirh proper help, that was all people cared about. This school pushes you to make them look good and punishes those that don't. Sure there are high test scores and good colleges. But this school fosters a view that value is based on how good you are at a sport or how smart you are while pushi no down others forms of intelligence and expression which the republican staff don't agree with. This was shown when they forced the theater department to alter the script of the play because an LGBTQ+ not even involved or an active role in the play would "drive the community away."

As a previous reviewer said, it might look good on paper but its really not. Its a public school but the majority of the students are white privileged. Its very prevalent in their sports department. Theyll sprinkle a little minority here and there but they always look out for the majority especially kids of alumnis. Its like a little community of privileged white people who do a lot of cultural appropriation-its their safe space to do this. The teachers are mostly young straight out of college with no experience and are very inappropriate with students. They have a dress code but youll see students bearing all they have. They pride themselves as one of the great high schools in Colorado Springs but its because of its location and sponsors. Dont enroll your kids here if theyre a minority.

Overall experience at this school was not good. They assigned a lot of work, (the curriculum was good, but the motivation, not so much) leaving no room for anything else and they were not very aware of any mental issues or medical issues that I or my siblings had.

Had an eating disorder and suggested to be in the same lunch as my sister and cousins. The principal and counselor lied to me and said they cant switch lunches. A social worker kept me anonymous and asked later in the year and they said its too late to switch lunch. I got mentally abused by the staff and the students.

I couldn't dislike a school more. They have a policy of assigning way too much homework which they pass off as "rigorous" when in fact it only destroys these kids' chances at getting into college when they can't even remotely get all their work done because it is simply TOO MUCH. They hire young, inexperienced teachers straight out of college who have never even worked in their fields, let alone been employees to anyone, who cannot handle a classroom let alone teach the material properly. When you raise issues to the school (whether its teacher or coaches), they fiercely protect their own and do whatever it takes to brush your complaints under the rug). If you want to ensure your bright, promising children have their hopes and dreams dashed when they head off to community college despite always being on the honor roll prior to high school, being hard-working and respectful, and having high aspirations for college send them to CMHS. If you want to give your kids a chance in college and in life, find another school.

The school has quite rigorous academic programs. The school is also one of the sports power house in Colorado (with 100+ team championships), particularly in tennis. It is a public school, but the culture is more like private school.

This school might look good on paper but the community and the integrity of the staff and students is not to be desired. Issues with race and drugs are very prevalent with no plan of action for equality or underage sobriety.

We have valued our childrens experience here for the past 2 years. The academic and wrestling programs far exceed what we expected for our boys. Much opportunity exists within the expansive curriculum. Equally, there are several volunteer and community events that offer character building and pride in helping those within the community itself.

Racial discrimination occurs on a daily basis with several teachers, additionally, there is no reaching out to talk to parents about their childs education or progress.

Nothing is being done about the racial discrimination students of color have to deal with. Teachers arent disciplined when it comes to these serious issues!

My son hears the N word all day from his peers. Several teachers treat him differently than the white students. The only teacher who has been there for him is Coach Saravis.

My family moved from NC to CO and my children were enrolled in district 12 schools. The first year was very hard for my high school student as NC has severely under achieving schools. It took my daughter a year to catch up to the CO school system and now I feel she has been prepped for college and has what is needed to be a successful college student and adult. I am so thankful for the move despite the first year of tears and stress. I was also amazed by the parent participation and the allocation of funds raised. What an amazing community.

We are a military family and moved here from Louisiana where they are quite a bit behind CMHS. I was concerned that my daughter would have difficulty here but instead she has flourished! She loves her teachers and her classes. Also, shes found a great group of friends to hang out with. Overall, were very happy with this school and believe our daughter is getting an excellent education that is preparing her for college.

We have experienced unprofessional administration who dont act in the best manner of my children and I have had to play a very very high level of advocating for my children. Some of the sports coaches have been inappropriate and these concerns were also dismissed. My child was seriously injured playing and the school refused to communicate with me as what had occurred and did not respond to any calls or emails. Parents concerns are not well received and often dismissed. I have further witnessed administration being inappropriate to my child and had to notify them they are not to communicate with my child. My child wishes she did not want to go to this school and does not recommend others go to the school. I have spoke up alot about concerns and they get dismissed. A high school that does not have the best interest of their students and administration staff who are not positive role models is very concerning. A handful of teachers are very good and others are inappropriate and disconnected but when these concerns are reported, they are also dismissed. The superintendent has been notified as well and nothing changes. Things were so bad specific interventions had to be developed per my demand to help my child cope with these concerns while at school as they created a high level of distress.

Once I got to college, it was astounding how much more I knew or had at least heard of previously about basic concepts and topics that other students knew nothing about. This school really prepared me for what is to come when I got to college. Students know when they are struggling and in junior and senior year the teachers emphasized communicating with the teacher and not whining to Mom and Dad because once students are in the real world, they have to address their own problems. No one else. The curriculum is rigorous, but a school that strives for excellence will challenge its students, and the parents should expect nothing less. It gave me a well-rounded education in all topics. There are extra curriculars for everyone. They have tutors, counselors, and special educators to assist students who may be struggling. They school also has a wide variety of sports as well. Yes, the football team is lacking and has been for years. The school is known for having very competitive prestigious sports like tennis and golf, but the school is also highly ranked in soccer, volleyball, wrestling, and cross-country, which by no-means are a "rich person's" sport. This school provides exceptional education, sports and extracurricular variety, and support for all kinds of learners. This is a Blue-Ribbon ranked school, and the results prove that everyday.

When I made it to college it didn't feel much harder than high school which I owe to this school as difficult as some classes were and the amount of homework was long. Teachers often interact better with students than parents as much as parents often complain and like to be over involved. Teachers will care for you as long as you turn in work and prove to them you are trying.

As many have already commented, this school is not meant for average kids acedemically or athletes. If you want your kid to have a well rounded experience look elsewhere. The football and basketball teams are a joke. They only excel at privelaged individual sports (swimming, tennis, etc...) If you want your kid to be a flat out nerd with little social skills and a GPA that probably isn't truly reflective of thier ability send them here and watch them like a hawk, do not let them ever get sick, and make sure you email, call, and visit the teacher every chance you get or your kid will be completely ignored!!! Also, do not expect them to come home understanding thier homework unless they are naturally gifted, you will have to hire a tutor or speand hours going over what they were supposed to learn in school with them!!!

What a disappointment! The faculty at CMHS is simply put unengaged and don't care. Poor communication, lack of accountability, poor teacher guidance and its all okay with them. The root....they just don't care. I went to this school as a kid, played sports, and had decent grades. Unfortunately the quality of the personel is ineffective in motivating, mentoring, and like many reviews have said....doing their job. The superintendent, Dr. Cooper, sets the example. I've been waiting for his call since September. Don't send your kids here...Unless you are part of the chosen few, you will be disappointed.

I am very impressed with this school's academic, sport and other activities achievements. My son is very proud of being a member of this school. Yes, it is very competitive, however the support form school teachers and staffs is unthinkable. All the members in the school seem to have one and only one goal that is to help your kids to succeed and they all have done a great job.

My biggest problem is the school does not care about the kids. They have a teacher that gets multiple complaints but they do nothing and they have no option because she is the only one that teaches that class and it is a required class for all students to graduate. The principle and dean support her and not the students. Many of the teachers are great, but not all of them. I am very thankful for the understanding and support of the counselors. They are amazing.

Raised in the Cheyenne System and graduated from the High School. It is a wonderful school that stresses excellence in everything from academics to sports to fine arts. It's also the only school I'll consider sending my own children to.
