For the most part, I believe they have a low tolerance for bullys.

we were very satisfied with Mitchell for a long time. however this year, they let their college prep staff go in the middle of prep season. They replaced her with someone who has little understanding of all of the requirements and rules for applying to various colleges which has made it a struggle. My daughter has has support up until this year, the year she needs it most. they are also getting rid many of their "elective" classes, like automotive and others. I am concerned about the low cost clinic they are installing in their school for the neighborhood, as I'm concerned about the safety of students and staff if they store drugs in the clinic. I like the school, and I like the fact that they allow college classes to be taken in school for college credits. most of the teachers are amazing. Leadership leaves something to be desired.

Even on heavy loaded classes, students do not seem to be loaded down with homework.

The principal is often unavailable to both students and parents. he has a strong facebook presence, but often times, he makes appointments with students and then fails to follow through. He doesn't even cancel with the students, he just leaves them waiting. As a parent, emails do not get a response in a timely manner (like 2 weeks later, if any at all) and he seems more interested in being the "fun guy" than anything else

There is a an exponential amount of support from the teachers. We've been a part of D-11 from the beginning, and have never had an experience like we have had with Mitchell. We were leary in the beginning, due to the reputation, but it's incredible how far off base those accusations were. My children thrive here, trust the staff, have no problems with the students, and I couldn't be more thankful. It's a blessing to know our children are being taken care of in our absence. Even though they are teenagers, they still need love and support. Fantastic job, M.H.S. Thank you for empowering my children by letting them know you care!

This is an area we've had issues with at prior D-11 schools. Not here! Staff does not tolerate it. This is a significant, positive change!

I mentioned this in another review already, but I do see that all learning styles are taken into account. It's obvious when I see their projects, homework, and in class curriculum.

My children are always supported when choosing the higher road. They are encouraged to speak out against injustice. I love that about Mitchell. Most schools don't want to deal with difficult situations. M.H.S. takes it by the horns.

Sometimes the homework load is a bit heavy (in my opinion), but it's selfishly spoken. After my day, I just want to hang out with my family & homework just gets in the way.

On the other hand, people learn differently. I can appreciate and recognize the fact that the staff needs to combine learning styles while taking homework into account.

They are ineffective because they don't undersand poverty. Not because they are not good teachers. Our programs have got to get more stricter and meet the needs of these students.

We really need better AVID programs. My son still doesn't know how to organize or study that welll. We need low ratio so that the teacher can give one on one help.

Counslers are not effective here. They do not make sure the students are in the right courses. Students who may not have taken a day of Algebra may end up in a Algebra 4 class. They lie about what the teachers are going to do. These teachers look at you crazy. They expect your student to know the basics and forget turtoring. What a waste. Teacher's here wear so many other hats , even int tutoring the students are left alone not really being tutored.

I feel like Mitchell is a decent school however the teachers are not teaching the majority of the students at their level. Truth is yes this school has more kids on a elementary reading level but they are being taught over there head which caused many of them to have to attend summer school if they want to pass. I noticed that most kids who get retained end up dropping out of school all together. I feel like they teachers don't gel together. I also feel like you have more teachers who teach at a college level. There is alot of gangs, bullying and fights that go on here. I am pulling my son out no matter what this year because I know he is a smart kid and has the ability to learn and pass. Being in this trifling environment I feel has not corrupted him, but he so busy playing survival he struggles in this school. I noticed that the teachers from summer school are teachers who break down concepts and the kids get it!!!!! I asked where majority of these teachers teach. Most say Palmer or Doughtery. Now imagine that. These schools have had some problems with teen drugs and death but they still are the a couple of the best high schools in the local area. I am speaking from experience as a teacher. My oldest child went here and you would have think I would have learned. If it weren't due to having a house in the area I would have taken them both out. My student wants to attend college. It has been a very hard decision but I am moving without regret so that he has a chance to be in a school that will not let him fall through the cracks

I was nervous to put my daughter into this school because it is not in a good area of town. But I am happy with the school and the teachers. My daughter loves it there. She has made a lot of friends and her grades are good. They have a lot to offer.

From a teacher's point of view...My daughter taught at this school for a year and she said it was the worst experience she's ever had. She said most of the kids are at a fourth grade level education while many of them can hardly read or write. When she first started there, the other teachers warned her that she couldn't expect nearly the same things from these students as the other schools she had taught at and that they were strongly encouraged to pass them regardless of their grades so that Mitchell would not be shut down. The teachers would actually be reprimanded if they gave out too many failing grades. She also said that the parent involvement was terrible and that many of the kids were completely unruly and the school wouldn't back her when she tried to enforce discipline. Even the good students couldn't learn because of the behavior of the disruptive students. She would sometimes go home in tears because of her frustration. I believe a school should be accountable and people deserve to have the insider facts about this school, not just what parents and students see. If you value your child's education, don't send them to Mitchell.

I have to say we heard nohing but bad about Mitchell. But after my daughter going there for 3 years and graduating a year early. I think it is an awesome school. The teachers and new principle CARE about the kids. The school has went though lts of changes. I do not agree with the rating of a 3. My daughter loved it!!!! o you can't judge a school til you go there.

I am now a junior at Mitchell and I truly do not agree with the comments saying that it is a bad school. I have taken the hardest classes that I can and I have had major academic success. My teachers care about how I do in school and they encourage me to push myself to my highest potential. Just for the record, there is a lot of misunderstanding about the school. The area that the school was placed is not one of the best areas in town anymore, but that does not mean that the school is any worse than it used to be. There are multiple college level classes that you can get credit for from CU Denver. If you want to believe that this is a bad school I encourage you to take a tour and see the family that has grown out of the students and faculty. No school is perfect, but if you want a safer environment then I would highly recommend this school. It has a zero fighting policy and it does not have even half of the drug problems that many of the schools have in the rest of the springs. ( Yes that includes Pine Creek and Cheyenne Mountain)

-20...it is across the street from gang infested projects. We are moving so that my grandchildren will not be STUCK attending this sub-par excuse for a school. It is NOT a good school nor "MISUNDERSTOOD". Clean out the trash and Mitchell may have 1/2 a chance of being semi-decent.

The principal can not write a complete sentence. That spells disaster for leadership. The teachers and principal did not follow through on plans to help my child. How am I supposed to show my student that doing school work is important to learning when the teachers gave him an A with half of the work missing? On July 11, 2011, a parent submitted that Mitchell "has the best JFROTC program." However these are some of the instructors who give As when major portions of work are missing. The instructors repeatedly failed to answer my emails about the situation. When they did answer, it was just empty assurances that they would make sure my student did his work. They didn't, and neither did he. This series of classes is supposed to teach acedemic responsibility and leadership, but completely fails at both. My wife and I also met with the principal to address my student's poor academic progress. We all agreed on a plan to address the situation. The next day, he met with my student, and told him something completely counter to what we had agreed. Again, my student was allowed to do nothing toward completing his work, and still get good grades as well as participate in activities.

Mitchell High School is a great school. It is like all high schools with the occasional drama, but overall has a safe and caring learning environment. I would recommend this school to any family. Please don't listen to what others have to say, go by and check the school out for yourself. There is no perfect school. The staff will make sure your child receives an education if they want one. They are always willing to share their time, whether it is before, after, or during their personal time at school. It has the best JFROTC program in Colorado, with nearly 400 students enrolled, and they offer many other opportunities for your child to get involved with. The population is very diverse, the students love that about the school. The best way to ensure your child a great high school experience is to get involved with their school.
