North Middle School is an amazing middle school. Great education, learning possibilities and physical education (ex. after school sports) I would like to recommend maybe a Home Economic class/club to help the students possibly learn how to cook, proper cleaning exercises and P.E. for every student all 3 years while they are in middle school. I feel like it would be great for the kids and help with the rambunctious of growing preteens-teens.

My child was here for 6th grade and was bullied by a teacher to the point of crying in class repeated times, when I spoke with the assistant principal about the constant bullying, he claimed kids lie and he took the teachers side. That fact that they allow children with learning disabilities and struggling mental health issues to be bullied by their staff speaks TREMENDOUS VOLUMES of toxicity. Any school would be better than this one.

North is a great school with a diverse student population. The students are smart, kind, and creative. There is a lot of talent at the school, and the staff help their talent and creativity bloom. North offers many extra curricular activities for students to get involved all year long.

I have been very happy with North Middle School. The administration communicated very well with parents. Teachers work hard to see student success. Staff and counselors respond quickly to issues and support students and families. One of my kids at North is in the SSN classroom and it's absolutely amazing.
For context, last year one of my children was at Mann and I pulled her out to homeschool before the end of September. I have expectations of schools and am unwilling to send my children to a poorly run, toxic school. I'm happy with my kids at North.

We choice into North and our child loves it. The instruction is great and keeps her engaged. They have different leveled classes so the kids are appropriately challenged. There are tons of extra activities and the drama program is amazing. The GT teacher also runs a fantastic program.

This school is horrible
We moved in last year at the end of year and immediately my child was bullied not only verbally but cyber as well. We got a restraining order on this other child and not even 4 days into the new school year my child was bullied by same kid and her personal property was thrown in trash... principal basically called me a liar and told me he didn't have time to take care of the situation... do not send your children to this school they do not care!!! The bullied get punished!!!

My daughter is really enjoying her first year at North. There are a lot of activities and she's really engaged in the learning process. We're really glad that she was able to choice in.

We're in our 3rd year at North and about to have our second child start next year. We've had a fantastic experience here! The principal is a fantastic leader who gets middle school kids and is mindful of what teachers need to feel supported, and is responsive to parents as well. The IB (International Baccalaureate) program is school-wide and provides a foundation for students to build critical thinking skills, and the teachers are energetic and engaging. I've appreciated the individualized scheduling - the counselors do a great job of making sure each student is in the class levels that are right for them in each subject. The gifted & talented academy provides a nice wraparound and support for those kids. And there is a great mix of applied academics (electives) that students can try out, as well as all kinds of sports and clubs. Considering how challenging a period middle school can be, we have found North to be a great place to be.

Both my 21 year old son as well as my 14 year old son, both in special education, attended North for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. As well, I am a very experienced D11 Guest Teacher for the past seven years, teaching preschool through 12th grade. The past five or so years, Ive taught at North many times, including my youngest sons classes. IMO, North & Holmes are the best D11 middle schools, with Jenkins following. I was an AVID tutor at West & Galileo and, with how those schools have worsened to substitute teach at, I will no longer work at West, Galileo, Mann, or Sabin.

Ive never had a problem subbing at North. Security and Administration have always been very supportive during the very few times Ive had to send a student to the office for behavior.

Middle school is a VERY difficult time. My youngest son, especially, had dealt with some bullying, especially in 6th grade (hes now halfway through his 8th grade year). Administration knows me very well and each time I or my son let them know that theres a problem, it has been dealt with. In 6th grade, we even had meetings between administration, teachers, myself, my youngest son as well as my 21 year old, since he could offer perspective the rest of us didnt have since he went to North, also as a SPED student, for all 3 years. These meetings successfully fixed the bullying issues.

Principal Leisure is hardworking, practical, big-hearted, and always on the lookout for opportunities that will improve student outcomes/experience. She is super responsive to questions and feedback. I love that all students get three years of foreign language instruction at this IB school. My 6th grader has a couple of truly excellent teachers who go above and beyond. Drama club has been a wonderful way for my kiddo to feel connected to the school and experience a lot of personal growth.

We switched to North after the start of my sons 7th grade year. The environment is supportive, diverse, and academically challenging. We are in the Gifted and Talented Academy and love the program. The administration has been thoughtful and caring. The culture is inviting and embraces unique learners. Staff is communicative and engaged. Middle school is hard, but this one makes it easier!

My child has had a wonderful experience at North so far. The Gifted and Talented Academy is great. The director of the program (Mr Sevits) gets to know the kids in that program well, and he cares for them. Students can be in more advanced classes in some courses and in the regular classes for other courses depending on their strengths. Some gifted programs are all in or all out, which I do not think makes as much sense. There is a math focus at the school and the students get extra time to work on math, some of which is paced individually for each student. I met with my child's teachers during the parent-teacher conferences and I liked what heard from each of them about what they are doing in class and on the feedback I received for my child. I got a strong sense that the teachers care for the students.

The school has had some fun events. The 100th anniversary of North was in the fall of 2024 and they put on a fun event with a building tour, a time capsule opening, tie-dye T-shirts, food, etc. (Sure it is an old building and that has some limitations, but it has character.) The drama program is impressive and the school plays that I went to go see were entertaining and fun. The National Junior Honor Society induction ceremony was a very nice event and the families all brought food for a potluck afterwards, which was a nice way to have a community feel at a pretty large school.

Overall this is a great school that is located right near downtown Colorado Springs.

I feel like North Middle School is the poster child of what not to do in a school.

First, the school is old. It's been around for over 70 years at this point. Along with age comes lack of certain things, like decent ventilation. The school was shut down once in the 22-23 school year because of an "unexplained" smell. I'm still not sure we have gotten the truth about it. At least once a week, my child texts me, or tells me after school, that the school has a certain smell again and is starting to feel sick from it. Nothing is ever done.

Pick up and drop off is just stupid at this school. There is no real parking area for parents to wait, so the road around the school is just littered with cars as parents park in the middle of the road to wait or in a cross walk. Students dare in between cars to get to their parents, but half the time you are lucky to see them. It's only a matter of time before a student is struck by a car at this school. Complaining to the school principal did nothing. Oh sure, she sent out one email about it and added a small snippet to the weekly emails, but no teachers, principal, security, or whatever is out there dealing with the matter (even after the principal promised it would be looked into.) I walk my child to and from the car because it's just that bad.

Teachers don't really "teach" from what I have been told by my child. Her ELA teacher just hands her a packet of worksheets and tells her to figure it out. I could do that at home... couldn't I?

Apparently kids can skip class here easily too and parents aren't told about it until 1-2 hours after school is out for the day. How can my child go to 6 classes in a row, but by the 7th class they just don't realize they are not in class? Do they not monitor the halls or bathrooms to make sure students are where they are meant to be? What happens if a child just decides to say "I don't want to be here" and walks out a door? Parents wouldn't know until after school when they pick the kid up!

I'm so glad my student will not be attending this school next year. Between what I have listed and a bunch of other things (bullying, for example) I feel like my kid is going to need a lot of therapy over the summer because this school has done a number of them.

We are happy with this school and glad we put our middle schooler here. We were a little worried at first when we read the reviews but we have had a very positive experience. Great programs and wonderful teachers.
