This is a bad middle school, moved my child to a different school. The principal is so bad and the way she dresses is sick she think she is one of the kids. Teachers aren’t supposed at all . And if you email teachers about a concern never anything back.

So I’m gonna share my personal experiences and cover some of these topics. To begin with the teachers, once of my teachers looked at a kid who was of color and used him as an example of a slave in history class. This teacher also called my friends fat, lazy, and she said we could never complete anything in life. And when this was reported to administrators they shrugged it off. Secondly one of the counselors was helping my friend throughout a conflict and told my friend, “it is just because you self harm and are overdramatic” and this was also shrugged off by administrators. Also I have personally been shoved by teachers so they could get to their classrooms and when it comes to violence they don’t do anything until it gets “too violent” but still let some violence happen. Also there are multiple teachers who have used the N slur in hallway and classroom settings. Also their counselors do not support emotional stability and have been straight up rude towards students when they are in need of help. As well for learning, their test scores are one of the lowest in the district and as well when I have asked what we are learning or questions I have often been told by teachers “I don’t know” and when teaching they just show videos for fourth five minutes and do nothing.

We love how inclusive and academics-focused this school is. There are very high-quality teachers compared to other schools we have experienced. Our child was part of the Innovations program in 6th grade, which was very impressive with their STEAM projects, then went on to having so many opportunities to explore career-focused classes in 7th and now 8th grade. The music program has also been a huge bonus!

District 49 and Horizon Middle School do not support children with disabilities. They are not given any allowances as required by law. I had my child attacked by security and staff requiring a urgent care visit even though my child was no immediate threat to anyone, and the school did not have a safety plan. Avoid District 49 in Colorado Springs.

I honestly expected this school to be great from how i heard people talking about it but just from what my child has been telling me i'm thinking about moving her to a different school

I love that even though the teachers don't always know how to help they always know how. I also love the opportunities for band and orchestra.

This school is amazing. These teachers are so cool and they make learning fun. You get a great education and lunch is so good!! I recommend putting your child in Horizon Middle School. They will love it!!

This school is decent just I wish it had a better system when it comes to progression of difficulty while you are going up the grade levels. It is pretty balanced in staidly getting more advanced as you go up the grade levels up until 8th grade. In 8th grade it is Super difficult in some cases to where you almost give up. They make 8th grade students suddenly use a new unfamiliar less efficient website for doing work and grades and you get screwed over by the grading system about 60% of the time one grade drops and it is one of the hardest things in the planet to get up and the lang arts teacher who
i wont name is very difficult to work with and the school hasn't been renovated for a while and the locker rooms are so freaking small its almost unusable it is a square room that is around 15 feet wide and long but almost half of it is lockers and they tend to cram like 17 or more students in each locker room and there is only one for each gender and this school seems to sometimes almost shove extracurricular activity's mostly art and photography with music it seems they put some decent money into instruments but they rarely ever do anything with them or let students use them they act almost more like a display item then a tool for students.

BEST SCHOOL EVER!!! I would definitely recommend going here. Im in 8th grade and I love all the programs, classes and after school clubs. All the teachers and staff are so nice they help you with problems inside AND outside of school and are always there if you need someone to talk to.

Any teacher who isn't willing to share any tools to help students succeed should be fired. 2 teachers have free reign with no oversight here and totally abuse that freedom and this punish certain students here.

If teachers can behave as poorly as the 2 that I have seen and the assistant principal and regular principal plus the zone director are all aware of issues and fail to address them leadership is nonexistent here.

In a transition year from 5th to 6th grade, kids are dumped into full responsibility. Not helpful. When adults ask questions our fir tips to help make homework more successful, the requests are ignored or turned down. Why isn't this school doing more to help stuents succeed. Instead they're set up for failure. The principal is fully aware and had no comment. Even the "superintendent " of this zone is aware and is no help. It's better to turn a blind eye apparently!

Once a math teacher gave 3 pages of homework the day before humanities [that project included 4 parts], science, and language arts project was due. She also assigns at least one page a day.

I hate this school. Yes, some of the educators here are good or okay, but there are some educators that are only here for the money. For instance a teacher here will not clarify what they mean [math] and i know a student who had to drop out of honors math who has always been in all math honors classes possible through out the years and she still doesn't understand what the teacher is saying. The music part of the school is great though. The math teacher won't explain stuff in a different way even though lot's pf her students are struggling. Also there is a lot of misbehavior involving very strong language, drugs, bullying, and sex talk.[Some kids already lost their virginity]

The school lied and turned there backs on a very smart kid with autism this year. They would rather send them to a "special school" rather than educate themselves with kids with special needs. Also too many bullies here. Most of the staff is really new and afraid to say anything to the senior staff, and the senior staff loves being in that position. Less friction+ easier to do whatever they want.

There are some teachers that are good, but most of the teachers I knew wont pick up the phone to let you know if your kid is doing bad.

Horizon is a good school with some excellent teachers. Also the administrators and front office staff are respectful and caring. I believe that my child is receiving a quality education. Unfortunately the parent involvement rate is not very high. It is also currently missing extras such as yearbook and student council. It would be beneficial if these activities would return. My experience has been that the staff here takes bullying very seriously and tries to address it appropriately. I would recommend this school to anyone who is looking for a middle school in their area.

I was a student at horizon all 3 years I finished my 8th grade year in 2013.Shure the kids at horizon are not all that pleasant and tend to bully the other kids but I realized it and didnt bring my parents in to do all the work. Only half the time were the problems fixed because the kids there thought they could over power the staff and half the time tht was the case.The class sizes arent tht good I had about 45 kids in my algebra class and the teacher was new,he didnt know how to control the class so there wasnt much learning. there are a select few that offer to help kids whenever they can. 6th: ms. Garcia, ms.Glen..7th:mrs Dallzel-Wagers, mr robillard, mr seymour..8th:mr troscher, mr camron. The athletic group is great our school.Our school seems to revolve arround basketball and track.All the enrichment teachers help alot.my band teach mr lawrence is fun, he is a good friend to most of the kids too. All of the sports coaches are teacher volunteers and i appreciate tht they coach us and grade our work and still dont get tired of us haha. Its a great school if u hang out with the right people and make the right decisions. If ur child doesnt do tht they r in for a rude awakening.

I moved just to get my child out of this school. This was the 6th grade. He was having a problem with a bully and the teachers and counselors I spoke with made excuses (including blaming my child) instead of even trying to appear proactive. I went to meet with a teacher about my child's grade and was basically told that if he couldn't keep up, that was his problem. Before or after school tutoring was not offered, yet if I taught my child the way I learned, he was downgraded because it wasn't the way they learned in class...even though the final answer was right. Overall, this is the feeling I got from every interaction with staff: they were too busy, it wasn't their problem. FYI, I did research on this site before deciding to send my son to Jenkins Elementary, where he has been thriving. I would not recommend this school to anyone who asked.
