I can’t stand being in this school teachers gossip about students in other students face they also don’t help when you are in need some teachers get upset when you ask for help and do their job. The guidance people are even worse they always say they can’t do something and they treat my parent horribly because my mom doesn’t allow them to treat me any kind of way. Just highly don’t recommend this school

2 guidance counselors told me I was one person and I can't do anything..and another said I am a high maintenance student right in front of me..they crushed the little hope I had left for that school..they have some of the most terrible staff imaginable

I'm a former student who graduated with an Electronics certification. That cert, as well as the immense amount of experience and technical knowledge that I gained while studying here, has enabled me to pursue my dream career of computer programming, and is surprisingly relevant in my regular life (I love working with circuitry in old game consoles).

WT's focus on trade skills and work-applicable experience suggests that students are all aiming for getting a job right after high school, without college. While that's a path that some students follow, WT still offers guidance for those who do want higher education. In my experience, they generally guided students toward the local community colleges to do 2 years before finishing a bachelor's at a university. I wanted to go straight to UConn, and I was successful, but the guidance counselors didn't seem to have much advice for that path. Out of my graduating class of ~150, only ~5 went to UConn, and most of my friends pursued community colleges. (While it's true that starting local is a great way to reduce student loans, UConn's relatively low tuition compared to other universities in the state made it a viable option for me. I paid off most of my student debt a few years after entering the workforce, but I did have some merit-based scholarships.)

As for smaller details, lunch was generally okay. It's prepared by the Culinary students, and it's not mediocre, but not stellar. The Culinary students do learn great cooking skills, but for the student lunches, well they're school lunches. The uniform requirement is often unpopular with the students, and the expense can be difficult, but most students come to accept the policy. Although part of the purpose of uniforms is to promote unity and discourage cliques, social circles still quickly form based on your chosen trade. This can be isolating if you're unable to find friends within your shop, but the academic side also provides an extra opportunity for being social. As an introvert, I was still able to make some friends.

WT is a great school, and offers some very unique opportunities that you won't find in other public schools even across the country. However, it comes with some academic compromises (see my teachers write-up). It's still a very strong option especially compared to Windham High School. It's very helpful for you if you already have an idea of what trade you'd like to do. The initial Exploratory program does a decent job of showcasing each trade, which is important since your trade is an important decision not to take lightly. You can switch trades in your first year, but it's more difficult to do later into the year. Ultimately, I wholeheartedly recommend this school, especially if you have an interest in the STEM fields.

In general, the teachers are wonderful, especially most of the various shop teachers who are very knowledgeable and passionate about their field. On the academic side, there's the usual mix, where some teachers are great while others can be apathetic. While WT is very strong on the technical side, it's a bit weak on the academic side, which is inevitable because students spend less time there compared to other high schools in order to study their chosen trade. The academic teachers have to focus their curriculum entirely on the state tests and nothing more, because there isn't enough time. AP courses weren't available, nor calculus (only pre-calc, stats, and trig in the final year). By socializing with students from EO Smith, I found that they were generally ahead academically, but they didn't have the kind of specialized knowledge of trade skills that WT students had.

Bullying does happen, and while teachers do generally take action when they witness it, it still exists just like in every school. It seems to be limited to social stuff or minor things like tripping; I never saw or heard of the stereotypical things of being stuffed in a locker or anyone getting beaten up at all. However, I don't know what would happen with students who are LGBTQ. There was a club that had limited participation (and was practically only the Health students), but since I had only ever vaguely known of 3 students in the whole school who were LGBTQ, I don't know what most students felt about it.

Loved it there. I graduated with an electrical degree which helped me land a great job and have an awesome career.

While yes. Uniforms do suck. If you want to learn somthing and have teachers take you seriously this school is great

This School Is Very Unprofessional. I Thought By Sending My Son To A Technical School There May Be Some Good Teachers There To Teach These Young Kids And Encourage Them To Learn But Honestly And Truly It Is The Exact Opposite. Most Of My Sons Teachers Were Way Behind On Putting Grades In And Updating PowerSchool. Emailing Teachers Does Not Seem To Work And Calling Doesn't Do Much Either. I've Walked In To The Office Numerous Times And Smelt Alcohol Under The Persons Breath That I Was Speaking To. The Security Guard Is A Complete Pervert And Has Watched My Son And Stood Behind Him While In The Bathroom. Overall The School Is Dirty And Has 3 Janitors Working There. The New Principals Have Made Unfair Dress Code Policies And Just Assume That Every Parent Can Afford The WT Logo Apparel. They also Assume Parents Dont Have Jobs And Can Pick Students Up After School Because There Are No Late Buses, In Which My Son Has Gotten Punished For Numerous Time. The Only Two Teachers That I Am VERY Impressed With Is The Two Shop Teachers In Architectural Technologies. The School Needs More Academic Teachers Like Them Who Actually Care For Their Students. BIG IDEA: Not A Good School, Don' Go.
