Not everyone who goes to war develops PTSD. This is a used as a metaphor to capture the experience and observations while our child attends this school. If you know your child can stand up and is naturally and biologically resilient to warlike conditions, then they will be fine here. If there are any hints that your child is socially and emotionally average albeit very smart, the culture will negatively impact or potentially traumatize your child. If your child is an obedient type, they will be made to feel anxious about speaking up and will keep silent to avoid punishment. If your child is creative, they will learn how to copy what they are told and not think flexibly. If they like to have fun while learning, they will learn to not have fun to route memorize and meet metrics. If you are a parent that understands laws and human rights, you will battle with your conscience and shove your gut into the incinerator during the time your child attends this school. You will try your utmost to get out to protect yourself and your children in order to lead a balanced and fruitful life. If you are 100% invested only in scores, following the status quo, being silent to ethics, or you are focusing on your own career rather than your child, and you dont care about anything else you will be at the right place. If you have other priorities or you are the type that advocates for your child, it wont be a good fit. It will be a daily battle where change cant happen.

My child has been in this school 7 years now. Their Principal Mr. Finn has targeted my family every chance he gets. For a month last year my son was uncomfortable going to the school due to the manner he spoke to him. Mr Finn does not know how to speak to people but instead will talk at you. On countless occasions he was made my mother feel small. When I wrote an email to address my concerns to the superintendent Mr Dan his only reply was "Oh I didn't think you wanted a response." I really do think the school is a good school which is why my child is still attending but there is no accountability for any of the staff. Unless you want to argue with admin please don't send your kids here.

School admin seems to care more about money than anything. They don't provide mental health help and have a history of enacting racist policies. Some of the teachers are good, but overall they teach for memorization to look good on academic tests, but fail to provide proper education.

If you are disabled, not white, or not Christian, run away as fast as you can. Look up Mystic Valley Voices on instagram. It's a group of former students working to change the school, but the school isn't listening. They have a clear history of punishing non-white students at a higher rate. They rarely if ever accommodate disabilities. And they had Christian videos as part of their curriculum, last I heard.
Yes, the school gets kids reading, writing, and doing basic math very quickly. That is the only thing it's good for. After that age, they teach to the test. They don't care about your mental health, or individualized needs. If you are comfortable sending your child to a military school, this is the place for you. If not, look elsewhere.
Leaving this school 3 years ago was the best decision I ever made. As it was for many other students I've talked to.

We also have a first grade student who has made tremendous advances from where he started at the beginning of the year. In our experience the teachers care deeply about the students and they really push and motivate the kids- nobody is left behind. There is a also a lot of school pride at this school and it is infectious. We are very grateful to have been given this opportunity for our son.

The school bullies its students into submission. Wouldn't send kids there if they paid me.

Having been a MV student for 13 years, from K-12, I would recommend the school, with some cautions. Among the school's flaws are its high teacher turnover rate, overcontrolling nature, and focus on either extreme of the student grade spectrum. A number of the teachers are fresh from college, beginning their first job, and move on to a better-paying school in a few years. This is difficult for students. Many policies seem pointlessly controlling, and sometimes new stupid rules pop up--No spiralbound notebooks! You all must own an umbrella!--but are soon forgotten. Students with neither consistently high or low grades, but somewhere in between, may feel neglected. But the teachers are largely excellent, and the high school uses the IB Program (research it, but I recommend it) which brings a semi-external curriculum to 11th and 12th grade. Sincere care for the students helps MV shine, as well as its confidence in (obsession with?) striving to be great. Visit the school and talk with both students and teachers, if you can, to see if MV is right for you. It's not for everyone. But it is well worth its price of admission. Since it's free. If you can get past the wait list. (Good luck.)
