This school has been very effective for my kids. My daughter graduated with honors and a certified nursing assistant license. She just finished her first year at a local university and is almost a Junior. They emphasize dual enrollment with the local community College instead of AP just because the dual enrollment credit is guaranteed college credit with the UNC system. My son is currently a Sophomore at this High School and is enrolled in both High school and college classes. They are encouraged by the staff and Admin to work at their pace.

Students who regularly do not turn in homework are given a discipline referral which the administration disregards. This undermines students who are turning in their work, and certainly gives struggling students zero motivation to adjust their negative choices. Furthermore, it makes the instructors who are trying to follow the rules the principal gave to them, seem powerless. That's never good for students.

In classes that are typically comprised of higher achieving students, such as Drivers' Education, honors courses, music, foods, physical education and other high interest courses, teachers do wonders. However, in classes where teachers need administrative support for chronic behavior issues, the serious students spend an unnecessary amount of time waiting for the students who seem to do anything they can to prevent the lesson being taught to continue. Students who are sent out of the room for outrageous behavior are sent back to report that the vice principal said the reason for sending them out was not good enough, they were told to return and just do the work, and that the problem was lack of classroom management on the part of the teacher. This results in no students being sent out, which results in a poor, slow, and interrupted lesson delivery.

Students who have strong positive character traits are most likely going to move forward with them, as they enter the environment already aware of the big picture. Teachers at this school seem to really try to emphasize and demonstrate integrity, compassion, and respect. Without administrative integrity, compassion and respect being demonstrated by the administration to the teachers, and without disruptive, dishonest and disrespectful students being given proper and fair consequences, the students who enter the school environment lacking these character traits, get worse, in spite of the teachers doing all they can to change that.

Teachers report that the principal NEVER responds to their emails, 95% of student discipline referrals are disregarded by the man in charge of sending them to the assigned vice-principal, that same man can be found in the lunch room visiting and chatting with members of the administration. Students pick up on these things, and it makes a difference. When your child reports that a disruptive kid in the class was told not to worry about the referrals she got, it isn't long before it is common knowledge among the student body in general. INEXCUSABLE. Students need to be presented with an administration and faculty that is a unified force focused on what is best for all students.

Thousands of dollars are spent on special education teachers, assistant teachers, curriculum support, teacher training, equipment and adaptive alterations. Assistant principals, teachers, counselors, and other important decision makers spend hours and hours daily addressing the needs, concerns and issues centered on students with learning problems. That, of course, is wonderful. My complaint is that there is a shamefully gaping discrepancy with resources dedicated to addressing the special needs of students with very advanced abilities for learning. We lose them because of boredom. This is a tragedy.

I'm not sure how many cases of bullying go beyond the classroom level management. I believe the popularity of bullying at school in general has significantly declined nationwide due to all the information about the long term damaging results and a much more defined understanding of the many kinds of bullying. Except for severe incidents, bullying used to be dismissed as "kids being kids." Grandparents, parents, other guardians, teachers, administration, students, and even the people you pass in the grocery store isle, are much more likely to intercede on behalf of someone they see being bullied. It's just not tolerated as it once was.

It's discouraging when your child comes home and tells you the assistant principal told her not to worry about the conduct referrals she gets because she has a bad teacher, especially when your daughter is learning and likes the teacher. I'm also not very happy that teachers have all but given up holding students accountable for being late. My child should be confronted with consequences for every tardy. One child gets suspended for the fifth tardy, and then later gets a warning for their 11th tardy. I expect the discipline process to be very well defined, written and posted for what happens at each level, and then fairly delivered. That issue got worse each of the last four years. I'm hoping college and real life will fix the wrong messages about consequences Mr. Simmons has cultivated.

I have one graduate and two currently enrolled at NBHS. I truly believe that your attitude shaprs your experience. All three of mine are doing/ have done well. They challenge themselves and found good friends and committed staff.
