Our experiences with this school have been wonderful! All three of my children are in the AIG program and one of them has an IEP due to high functioning autism. At no point has this school made me or my children feel as if we were a burden. They have worked with us to ensure each child has their individual needs met despite the extra work involved and are primed for success. The music is phenomenal! The program's reputation for stellar performance is well earned. It's definitely a place where passion is taught and hard work is rewarded. Academically, my children are being prepared for the next step in each grade. The building blocks are in place and the structure encourages success; however, it's up to each parent to follow up and ensure your child meets the expectations of each respective instructor. The teachers teach the material. We have not been without issues along the way in our three years here. Those issues have been promptly addressed with active communication with the staff and resolutions quickly reached without recriminations. We hold our children to high standards and are pleased that the teachers understand and support those standards in their classrooms.

We moved to New Bern, NC from RI, Two of our children had already completed school in RI and stayed behind. We brought 4 young ones. One went into NBHS, 2 went to Grover and one went into Trent Park. The two in Grover noticed immediately that there was quite a bit of reverse racism by certain teachers. (My kids had been previously educated in one of the top 5 school districts in the country). The majority of teachers at Grover could not articulate instructions correctly. If certain students asked for help, the teachers were glad to help but if my kids asked for clarification, teachers rolled their eyes, sighed, huffed and puffed and would restate directions the same, but slower. I ignored my kids complaints, believing that they are exaggerating. Fast forward. My youngest enters Grover. Same problems. I began to have parent/teacher conferences. Most teachers treated me the same way. We bought a house in the summer between 7th and 8th grade. My daughter ended up at HJ MacDonald. THANK GOD! The teachers are articulate, the student body does not appear to engage in bullying and my child is treated with respect, as am I. Grover is a terrible school, due teachers who are ill qualified.
