My child is in fifth grade and his teacher is disorganized, vague, unhelpful, and lazy. She comes off cold and unwelcoming and generally is not well liked by students. The first time I met her she almost broke my hand squeezing it so hard. She attempts to display a weird sense of control and I do not feel comfortable leaving my child alone with her. I do not recommend this school. Sending out messages/instruction at 9:15pm is outrageous and unprofessional. I have screenshots of all of her instances. 100% glad my child will not be attending DES next year. It’s been more harmful than helpful.

Special education is also a joke, they do not care about your child and will try to take away beneficial services. They do not have enough time/experience to try and rediagnose children who were already previously diagnosed by actual doctors and pediatricians.

Like the other recent review I saw, I found that the old reviews did not capture my current experience with Dixon Elementary. BLUF: I'm VERY pleased with the experience we've had over the last two years from 2023- present, and all you MILSOs/AD/Vets, you can breathe a sigh of relief. I have two school age children, both enrolled in Dixon and their experience has been fantastic thus far- from the outstanding "Leader In Me" values, skills and perspectives the teachers are reinforcing daily, to the enthusiasm for learning and excitement to learn MORE once they come home. My children often earn awards reinforcing their interest in the school, and there isn't are no "participation trophies" that I've seen or heard about in relation to student performance on the curriculum. Additionally, the gifted program added rocket fuel to my oldest child's enthusiasm for school, which genuinely feels like a progressive value-add, challenge program from what I can tell. This in turn increased mt youngest child's interest in academic pursuits and lifelong learning. Although I'd LOVE for homelife to take all the credit, the curiosity my kids come home with is definitely something I attribute to the great work of the teachers and staff at the school. All that said, maybe it's just teacher's we've gotten, but my kids are happy, healthy, learning and growing. As long as that's the case, I'd bet on Dixon, every time.

I see most of the reviews here are pretty old! I have never been more impressed by an elementary school in my life. Perhaps we just had amazing teachers, but our girls loved it and grew and learned so much- not only excelling in academics, but in social skills and leadership skills. The Covey “Leader In Me” program is great- a lot of adults could learn from this! Great programs for art and talented/gifted education.

My daughter doesn’t receive homework at this school. Which is odd here last school taught them so much and had weekly homework in kindergarten!

This school is very unorganized and I’m highly disappointed in how things are run here. They say it’s an overwhelming amount of students 1100. That’s no excuse my daughters Previous elementary school in Louisiana had over 1000 children and they were extremely organized with car line drop off and car line pick up and had so many activities throughout the school year. Not at all impressed. The level of learning here seems to be lower than what my daughter was receiving and it makes me extremely upset.

Your experience at this school will solely depend on your child's teacher. If you're lucky to get a good teacher then be thankful. We had a wonderful teacher the first year and absolutely awful teacher the second year. My child went from loving school and never complaining to never wanting to go, begging to be homeschooled, tears and complaints of stomach aches. The teacher would scream at the class daily, get mad at kids when they answered questions incorrectly, ask if they wanted to repeat that grade, use the clipping chart system for academics when it's only for behavior, kids were constantly crying from getting yelled at. It's like they were walking on eggshells around the teacher, afraid to do one little thing wrong. We reported it to admin a couple times but it doesn't do any good, they say they'll handle it but they don't. I'm so glad we're moving and we don't have to deal with the ineffectiveness of this school anymore. I'm only giving 2 stars because my child's first teacher was awesome.

Both of my kids went to Dixon Elementary and it was so awful there that we pulled both of our kids out and started homeschooling them. First, my son was constantly bullied, yet the teachers and principal did nothing about despite my husband and I constantly telling them it was a problem. Second, my son has ADHD and had an IEP. His ADHD makes it difficult for him to sit still and we told his teacher this and even gave her a letter from his pediatrician, yet his teacher didn't care and stuck his desk in the corner of the classroom behind a door and shamed him for it. Third, my son was sick one day in class and asked to go to the nurse. The nurse sent him back to class because she said she thought it he was faking it because other students have done that. Needless to say, my son ended up throwing up in the classroom because neither the teacher nor the nurse called me to let me know he wasn't feeling good. Fourth, my son was accused of stealing ice cream while he was in the lunch line. He had put it in a basket where everyone could see it WHILE HE STOOD IN THE LUNCH LINE, yet was accused of stealing it. Even his teacher said he wasn't stealing, but the lunch worker thought it was ok to accuse him and embarrass him in front of all the students. Fifth, the lunches in that school are a JOKE. They aren't nutritious at all and don't even fill the kids up. There are SO many issues with this school it's ridiculous.

my son used to get ec services now he no longer needs any of them. They have helped him catch up and exceed his peers.

This is a global school that includes a lot of different cultures and difference in other people. The children see how everyone is different. Different tends to be a great thing in this school. i give this school a 10 in effort to help change and mold our next generation.

This school has been the absolute worst experience. My child was bullied by the teacher, shoved into a corner and ignored. The teacher was too busy with assessments to actually teach. I ended up having to pull my child halfway through kindergarten because he became withdrawn and kept telling us he just needed to die because he was a bad kid. Kindergarten shouldn’t make children express suicidal ideation. He is now a very happy homeschooled child with a healthy outlook on life.

In four years at Dixon Elementary, I have never encountered a staff member that is not encouraging and supportive of the children. The school focuses on leadership, goals, world views, and being a contributing member of the community.

I am so glad my son is out of this school now. I was not impressed with his level of learning last year as soon as I moved in to GA he made honor roll and education levels increased. We had to move back to NC and this is the only local school. I found out the day before the last day of school that the school would not be giving my child a report card due to a $30 balance from earlier on in the year due to a reduced lunch issue with forms. At the start of the year they didn't have them a available and then a miscommunication on him returning. Which resulted some where along the lines my son growing upset and being under the impression he could not pass the 5th grade with out the balance being paid. Transferred around via phone calls where I was advised the principle has the last say so if the report card is released. Which of course it was not so my son is upset and I was working and asked kindly could it be sent home and I would of course pay the money to the school. I just dislike the level of interactions, my son brings a folder home every week for me to sign and a parents and teachers comment section for 5 weeks straight I wrote to the teacher and he never responded back, in the end my comments were subject to just say we are on X amount of weeks and you are not responding to me.....? I asked for 3 weeks for an update on my child's performance with no response when he was aware he did call (the teacher). The school is a downfall and I understand why it has public ratings of 2-3stars out of 10. Failed to assist with a situation which cost me money far enough $30 is not a great deal of money but it's the principle. Then to withhold my sons report card because of miscommunications and over 5 weeks of asking how my child is doing in school with no response.... 2.5 months of not knowing where my son stood academically with a some what non responsive teacher go ahead and throw the icing on the cake by withholding a report card in which the school failed to provide the documentation of assistance for at the start of the year and on reenrolling

There is a reason Dixon Elementary's principal was named Onslow County 2013 Principal of the year. Unlike most school administration, this school's staff is available and seen interacting with students on a daily basis. I feel confident and secure when my son leaves for school in the morning, that he receives the best education possible.

I would give the school a 94% on their report card. Friendly, character building, organized. High quality teachers. My only complaint is unfair classroom assignments. The new teachers get the more difficult children in their classrooms. Fabulous STEM program!q

I LOVE this school!! This is my daughters first year of Kindergarten and it has been wonderful. Her teacher is excellent and the school is very big on volunteering, so I am able to volunteer in her class every morning. I was worried about it being a TItle 1 school, but that hasn't bothered me one bit. The principal is excellent as well and I feel my daughter is gettting as good an education here as any other public school. It has been a wonderful experience and I am sad we have to move this summer. I would recommend Dixon to anyone looking at moving to the Jacksonville area.
