This school almost took my grandson's self esteem.Being bullied by both students and teachers. Trying to be a good student didn't work every day it was something. When Trying to address it with staff you where treated like you where doing to much.Talking with the principal was impossible. Always having to speak to others. And nothing would not be done.Giving names and the things the students were doing. It didn't work,my son became a target with staff also making remarks stop telling it will stop which it didn't it got worse.Even address what teachers where saying him.The answer from the principal I don't think that was said. Not I'm going to check that out.The absolute worst.I'm a retired educator and grown children never had the issue as we did at that school. I wanted to do this for two years .But now that my grandson is out of that school I can do it and it want hurt him.

Worst school a parent can send their kids to. There's always bullies picking fights, they dont get expelled, the staff is unprofessional, the front office is always gossiping and bullying parents criticizing them. Its a hang out office. Teachers dont grade work and mark zeros. Teachers walking out of students and making fun of the students infront of them. Sad that no one has done anything to change this despite all the reviews and reports that their past students have given.

This is school has the most unprofessional front office staff that I have ever had to deal with. Their tone when speaking with you is belittling. Their side bar non work related conversations when you are there. Why are they getting days off for training? Its not working? Or change the admin staff curriculum so that they are taught how to be professionals.

This school sucks and its not even because of bias. Soap isnt in any of the bathroom regularly, too much assault from kids, teachers just give packets of notes, teachers often try to embarrass students even if they do work.

My daughter had an extremely negative experience at Overhills Middle School. She was subjected to bullying and constant fights, both at school and on the bus, which made her feel unsafe. The overall environment was chaotic and not conducive to learning.
She has an IEP, but the EC reading teacher rarely showed up, and she did not receive the reading services she was supposed to. This caused her to fall far behind. Despite raising the issue, the principal never followed through on resolving it.
There was no consistency in her classesshe went through 3 different math teachers and 2 different ELA teachers within the first four months of school. She learned nothing during that time. Teachers gave PowerPoints and worksheets with answer keys instead of actual instruction.
Grading was another major issue. Teachers input grades late, often waiting until the last minute. Because of the lack of consistency and transparency in grading, I had to email her teachers weekly just to ensure I had the most accurate and updated information. My daughter even failed art because she submitted her work in the wrong foldersomething that couldve been easily fixed had her grades been updated on time. She thought she had a A in the class.
The conditions at the school are unacceptable. It smells bad as soon as you walk in, trash is everywhere, and her locker was full of ants. It was so bad that the janitor had to be called in to clean out the infestation.
This has been the worst school experience for my daughter. She has fallen behind academically and emotionally. If you have the option, I strongly recommend avoiding this school.

I am so thankful that my child got into Ascend Leadership Academy and that my children will never return to Overhills.
Over the past two years I have not encountered a single teacher who appeared to do nothing more than check boxes. My children is behind in reading and math, and just continues to fall further and further behind due to the lack of instruction. In seventh grade, his ELA teacher does not correct his basic spelling, grammar, or punctuation mistakes.
Bullying runs rampant and teachers appear to not care, and ignore bullying happening in their classroom. Ive been to the school numerous times to address this, and my child is the one who has had to change schedules multiple times to avoid getting bullied, rather than the bullies themselves being dealt with.
The school cant seem to hang on to teachers, so for a majority of the year rotating subs teach classes, with no real curriculum being followed.
When a teacher is not there, they funnel all the kids into different rooms, so the children have no idea where they will be every day.
There seems to be a lack of structure at the school and my children constantly comes home complaining about how he didnt know when lunch was going to be, or what class he was supposed to be in at any given time.
When I try to call the school, if anyone answers at all (most of the time I have to call at least six times to get someone to answer the phone), they sound annoyed like you just interrupted them doing something more important.
My child does not feel safe at this school, and we literally have a no more OMS calendar on our walls, marking each day we are closer to never having to deal with this school again.
If you have options, please choose any alternative to this school.

DO NOT SEND YOUR KIDS TO THIS SCHOOL OR COUNTY. This is the worst school a parent can send their kids to. There's always a fight. The students seem to rule the school. There's no real agenda. Kids get bullied not only by other students but by staff as well. The staff is overly unprofessional. They are there just for a check. They give out grades to keep their reputation. Students are siting in classrooms that are not assigned to them and no one catches that. There's too much hush hush on incidents in this school. Favoritism is A+ here, their students get away with fights and more with no consequences. The bus situation in this county is the worst. You have teachers screaming at the kids and walking out of the classroom while in session. This county needs to invest in real people who can make changes and make these kids learning environment safer.

This is the 2nd worst schools that I have experienced in my lifetime. My son was a straight A student and has voiced that he is learning very little at this school. He has seen students fighting, smelled cigarette smoking in the bathrooms, and has informed us that most children use their Chromebook laptops for watching YouTube content creators and playing videos.
This principal has been unresponsive and this school seems extremely unorganized. Being underfunded should not be an excuse for being this poorly ran. This will be a one and done situation for our family but hopefully this school improves.

Overhills Middle School has awesome administration that takes care of business. It is not easy running a middle school - there are different personalities from students to teachers and staff. They are awesome in managing and maintaining the safety and care of their students. I give OMS 5 stars!

Horrible school! Teachers have favorites. Students are loud, destructive, and violent. Teachers and athletic officials will not give a fair chance instead base everything on color. My childs grades and social skills have dramatically went down since coming to this school.

Terrible school with terrible teachers. Some of which barely speak English, making it hard for kids to understand them. The kids are warehoused and 1 on 1 teaching is non-existent.The bullying issue is out of control. The principals are lost, running around in circles, accomplishing nothing.Forget about communication. There is none. The school needs a total overhual of staff/faculty.I would be embarrased to be working there. They need to close doors and hire new faculty, starting at the top-down.

I would NOT recommend this school for any special needs child to go to this school!!! They do not have the heart or compassion to deal with the needs that a special needs child needs. I had to be reffered to Intensive In home care department. They will come into your home to assess problems in all areas, like parenting skills, school, church, wherever that child is at. They concluded that this is the worst school they have ever delt with. OMS was not willing to receive this service, even though it would've helped my child and the teachers

The school isn't terrible but it's not good either, not even average. There are rumors going around everywhere and the 2015-2106 year to prevent fights they made us walk in lines everywhere but that didn't help much because there were still fights. Cafeteria and hallway fights. The teachers are okay but some need to slow down and make sure the students actually know and understand what they are being taught

my son attended this school for his 6th grade year and it was the worst middle school. It took them about a month to get his IEP to his teachers and I had to get the district involved to even get them to have an IEP meeting with me. I would never recommend anyone to send their kids there. If you live in the Spring Lake area and can get away from OMS, do it!

I have 3 children at this school. I do not know why the administration changes things so close to the end of the year but should have happened long ago. The new bus schedule is a nightmare and the overcrowding on buses is insane. Kids have to stand in the isles. Sixth graders are out in trailers where the bathrooms are mostly shut down and super hot or cold depending on the weather. No safety. All of my kids teachers have poor communication even letting one of my kids almost fail the first semester without a phone call, email, or even smoke signals. I even personally tried to volunteer at the school with no luck. My clearances went through in the first month of school and asked until xmas break to find out that they were done. Another dozen times asking about volunteering now with no luck at all any times this year to volunteer. Wanted to help with proctoring and no communication. Had questions that were unanswered by the principal or anyone else. The school does not want help and ignore you. The counselors will help when made to.

This school is not a good school at all. Many fights break out all the time, and student conduct is miserable. I have had a substitute teacher for half of this year and she is not a proper social studies teacher. There are reports that the principal and vice principal have been recently fired too. Many teachers can not control their students and therefore most of the day is spent being yelled at. There are a few decent teachers, but over all it has been a terrible year here at Overhills Middle.

Overhills Middle School just recently did some improvement late in the school year with their Administration Staff; better late than never. But please be aware that this school is so overcrowded, that students have to lug all their belongings around because there are no enough lockers to go around. This has caused my child to be a victim of theft countless times in which pencils, paper, and baseball caps were stolen from his bookbag; even half eaten food/snacks and drinks were sadly taken. Overcrowding also causes 6 graders to be taught inside of inadequate trailers that are drafty and moldy. Overcrowding also forces several classes to take a lunch break as early as 10:00 am. This also affects transportation, where buses are arriving and dropping off students late. I was told the fix to this unfortunate situation is the construction of a new school. In my opinion it is not being built fast enough. Since my child started 7th grade he has had teachers switched around, some even leaving; I believe this is the 4th Homeroom teacher....I lost track. In conclusion, with school near its end & the change with administration will hopefully improve teacher, parent, and student morale.

We haven't even started school yet and my son is not even in the system. According to them, they haven't entered everyone in the system and will have them entered by the end of the week. That is not good enough for me. I'm already trying to find a different school. They were not helpful at all.

Horrible school! My son has been bullied in front of TEACHERS who just stood by and did NOTHING! Both of our children who have attended OMS say they wish they could go somewhere else as they did not feel safe there. The school teachers and staff tell you what you want to hear and then do nothing to fix the problem. Teachers expect you to do their job for them. My children have not had one positive experience from attending this school. I would not recommend this to anyone!

Its good to have these reviews here for both parents, teachers, & the community. This really worries because we moved here from out of state and both of my children will be in the MS & HS and this worries me and I pray and hope this will not be a bad experience for my kids. To parents & teachers, there is so many negativity in this world. I hope we can try not to concentrate on the negative but if there is some, that we can come together and have a solution. Schools nowadays are not easy, any way you see you. As a teacher or student but the we all need to work together to make things better especially for the sake of our kids but truth is, some kids are not as eager or respectful as they used to be back when most of us used to go to school. There are still those who make it a #1 priority to make their education the main focus which is great but again even doing so its not easy because there are those who use this as a way to start bullying and so forth. Lets put our best efforts and look at the positive and think positive for the sake of education. I cant help but worry though ; ( I rated this a 3 but I have yet to have any experience with this school I have to be somewhat neutral.

Parents if you have another choice between this school and another, pick the other one!!! I had so many issues trying to even get a teacher to answer my emails. It seem as if this school has an extremely high turn over rate. My child had 3-4 math teachers his 7th grade year. Class sizes will run you from 35-47 students per teacher. The teachers are trying but they are just too overwhelmed. My neighboors daughter was bullied so bad she had to move her. If you have another choice pick that one. This is a terriable school!!!!!!!
Posted: June 19, 2013
As a teacher at the school, I take offense to some of the comments posted. Just like any work place there are always stronger and weaker teachers. It is a shame that most of the reviews stem from isolated negative events that are being applied towards the whole of the school. As mentioned in other reviews, we do have large class sizes. Despite that fact I know I, as well as many of my coworkers, work tirelessly to try and provide a quality education to all students. I have a bachelors in education and a masters in my content area. I am a part of professional organizations to keep me updated in the latest educational trends. I spent the entire summer working to gather resources to support the change to the Common Core curriculum that would engage and challenge my students. I love teaching my students and enjoy building relationships with them. Tearing down our school will do nothing to improve it. Try giving teachers the benefit of the doubt, we're not all bad.

Instead of worrying about school uniforms, an overhaul to the teachers needs to be done. My child had a whole semester without the assigned teacher and a substitute was used as a perm. teacher. If there is going to be strict rules and uniforms impemented, then we need strong teachers that can handle and enforce discipline in the classroom instead of calling in sick and spending a few days at the beach to avoid getting rid of the troublemakers inside the classroom.

My son went to this school years ago and was never challenged. We had to fight for everything. My daughter currently goes here and we hate it.Both of my children are in the gifted program, yet neither one of them have challenging work. The teachers treat the children like they are bad kids, they even talk negatively about them within hearing distance. I have heard this many times. One teacher who had my child twice a day for over half the year still didn't know my child name. I really think this is sad. I am my child biggest supporter, however, I don't feel that I should have to fight with the school to do their job. They preach, "no child left behind" unfortunately the gifted children get left behind due to the school catering to the children who can not pass the EOG test. You can find a few good teachers but their hands are usually tired by Harnett county board of education. As for parent involvement, they discouraged me. They only want someone to do their photo copies and things like that. I am so happy for my children that we are out of this school finally.

My child is new to this school and since day one we have had serious problems with racism from other students. I made the administration aware of it immediately but my phone calls are dismissed and never returned. The class sizes are too much for 1 teacher. on my chids first day the Principal had to be called in to control the class bc the teacher couldnt. Communication between teacher and parent is non exisistant, if you have the option for your child to attend another school...do so
