Our experience at this school has been deeply concerning. Ongoing bullying has not been adequately addressed, and in some cases, it has felt as though inappropriate behavior from both students and parents has been tolerated rather than corrected. Additionally, there have been instances where staff used unprofessional language and made comments that were not appropriate for a school environment.

Despite having a 504 plan in place, we have struggled to receive consistent support or necessary accommodations. We are often told that changes are “fluid,” yet no meaningful adjustments have been made. It is also concerning that classroom disruptions caused by ongoing behavioral issues are not being effectively managed, which impacts the learning environment for all students.

Unfortunately, our experience has led us to feel that our child’s needs are not being met here, and we look forward to moving on to a middle school that will provide the understanding, support, and accountability she deserves. Please consider any other option of schooling before you entertain Yates Mill.

this school is the definition of childhood :3 i went there before i made my mark there. i love this school. i would do anything to be there again X3

YMES is a wonderful school with a very close-knit, family feel. Our experience, as well as the experience of our friends, has been positive and our children are thriving. There are several events throughout the school year in which parents can be involved and the PTA is quite active. We are very pleased with our teachers and the administrators.

We’ve had a wonderful experience at Yates Mill. From the administration to the teachers, everyone is warm, welcoming and extremely well qualified. Our children have received an exceptional education and there are many opportunities for families to get involved.

We had a great kindergarten year! Our teacher really taught so much to our daughter- she was very knowledgeable about new changes in teaching reading, even from the last 3-5 years. I felt like we had good communication from the various groups (teacher, administrators, and PTA).

Be warned.... School administration will give you lip service if you engage them. My child has been bullied, threatened and harassed by a few students for 2 years now. Reports to the school, meetings with teachers and calls with the assistant principal have all fallen on deaf ears. Nothing has been done to resolve the issue, take disciplinary action or to make my child feel safe. Instead, my child is now the target of bullying by the homeroom teacher. Public, loud, inappropriate and directed bullying - BY THE TEACHER. June 12th cannot get here fast enough. We are done with this school and thankfully moving on.
Parents, be warned.

Our 6 yr old was attacked in class at the beginning of the year and then attacked by the same student in the middle of the year. She no longer felt safe in class. The attacks were impulsive according to administration. We accepted that and was not looking at punishing the other child. We merely wanted our child to feel safe again and asked that she be moved to another classroom. They would not comply. Stating that they had a process to follow... That process should have started at the beginning of the year. Not after our child was attacked for the second time. She wasn't the only student that had a negative encounter with this particular student either, which just shows that it's going to keep happening. Especially since there was no punishment/consequence that has deterred this student from repetitive negative actions.

It is unbelievable to me that they expect my little girl to stay in the same class with the boy that attacked her. Would we ever ask any woman to do that?? No! Aren't impulsive crimes punished???? Yes! I told my daughter how she feels matters and that she has a voice. No one touches you without your permission and no one can tell you that your feelings don't matter. So we left the school, never to go back.

I will say that we loved our teacher. I feel that she isn't given the resources that she needs to help with the schools all inclusive policy. The principal was also very kind and compassionate. However, the vice principal is cold and defensive. Could care less about our child. She was telling me about life..... really???? I'm a minority that grew up very poor, she isn't, and she wants to tell me about life and hardship and asked what would I do if this happens in the future or my children are in other situations like this....I told her I know when to remove myself from a negative situation and this was one of them. The nerve of that vice principal. She needs lessons in communicating with parents! She talked down to me the entire time like she was better then me and it made me so angry. It's been a long time since I've felt that way. I can't believe she's the vice principal of an elementary school.

As a parent with kids in school for over 15 years, from Eastern NC to Western NC, then back to RALEIGH. Hands down, principal Richburg is the best leader of education I have ever experienced.

Attending Yates Mill is like attending a private public school. The individualized attention the students receive is incredible. Their instructional approach using team time is very effective. The entire school community is very positive. I am so happy my boys have the opportunity to attend YMES!

Hello, This is a warning for any parents who are thinking about sending their children to Yates Mill Elementary school. My daughter is a student there and I can't get her out of that school fast enough. Sending her to that school was the WORST decision ever! They have the rudest office staff members, they can't keep a principal longer than a few months, and the assistant principl has an attitude as though she couldn't care less about the students. The school LOST my child to which the police had to be called and involved in helping to locate my child and they are terrible at communicating important information to parents. However, they are great about over communicating when it comes to needing donations and volunteers. I have had nothing but trouble from this school from the office staff to the teachers to the principals! Absolutely terrible school!!!!!

Yates Mill Elementary school has a new principal (beginning March 2011) and we are looking forward to many changes. Already, I have seen a great deal of improvement among the staff. If you had asked me during the leadership under the previos principal, I would have told many to find an alternative school, if possible. She was not an effective administartor. I saw her very few times since moving to this area in the two years we have been at Yates Mill. Regardless, there is improvement. The new principal is very visible and front office staff are always willing to help. It is not a great school by any means but has alot of potential. Looking forward to what the new administration will bring to the new school year.
