The homework that students are given is to challenge them. As a student the homework allowed me to try concepts on my own to be fully sure that I understood them.

I believe that this school has some of the best teachers in Wake County. Many teachers that I have been talked to really care about their job and advancing their students.

I have had an amazing experience as a student at this school. This has made me not only ready for college but also the professional world. Throughout my four years here I was able to grow and learn through the help of the incredible students and staff. I can't wait to see what Wake STEM becomes.

They had a policy which promoted failure if you turned in anything one day late rather than just penalizing the grade. Specifically, if you had an assignment that you worked hard on, but had a mental lapse and wasn't a perfect product, it was given a failing grade. If it was a project, you would just automatically be given a failing grade. Some people with learning difficulties sometimes need more support in remembering or dealing with performance anxiety. This school policy just served to give them more anxiety and made grades reflect behaviors instead of academic achievement.

They have some math and language classes that lean heavily on computer software to access academic achievement. Students could repeat lessons to temporarily memorize lessons and miss the long term benefit. This would handicap them in the next level if the course.

As long as the student isn't failing, they aren't going to support the student with learning difficulties. They do not help students dealing with anxiety; they actually increase the anxiety with their college readiness. It actually took a psychological diagnosis after a suicide attempt before our family got the appropriate response to a student who had a documented learning disability because the student wasn't failing.

They refused to help my daughter with a child psychologist diagnosis of dysgraphia because she didn't have poor enough grades. They had a teacher who had been in the school two weeks come to this conclusion. Then, four years later, after much anxiety, failing grades and complete breakdown as well as psychiatric documentation, they finally conceeded that she needed help with her disability!

It was meant to be for those families whose parents had never achieved a college education. Instead, it turned out to be an elite school where you are never given the opportunity to take average classes (for instance, the only seated US History class is AP - not advanced or regular). If you need more organizational help, you won't receive it from most of your teachers. They do not regulate students on the NCSU campus well - like at the library afterschool. They allow too much of the students time at the school to be social - when they should be mainly working on educational activities during the school day not on skype or other social media.

My freshman was on a 504 plan which said he needed support remembering the recording of assignments and organization. The 9th grade staff decided that he and others would be given 1 point above passing for anything one day late and then they would subtract for any errors. Projects wouldn't be accepted at all if they were late. I asked for their policy to be adjusted to allow kids to have this expectation later like in 10th grade. I was told it was a school policy. Later, when I asked what specific policy was turned in to the Superintendent as a school policy (which did not actually include this punitive grading), my son was finally given flexibility with grading (after many F's).

The Math department is excellent. The foreign language department through NCVPS or in class was a flop! The history department does well to teach and the science department stretches their minds.

My son has been at this school for 2yrs. It's an exceptionally good school...great teachers who collaborate, excellent leadership from Principal Schwenker & others, compassionate treatment of students by peers & teachers. It's a very small healthy cohesive school where everyone is focused on student success. Classes are challenging, students are engaged, teachers really care & parents are kept informed. I'm very happy my son chose to go here! The school hasn't been around very long, so everyone's learning their way & making changes as needed. I've been impressed by how much energy enthusiasm & hard work everyone puts into making this school and it's students successful.

i am a student of the first generation at STEM. The school involved alot of work, willpower and determination but the great thing is that you learn those qualities here. I love going to campus everyday and actually interacting with other college students. It can be a handful but we all struggle together as a family. In our school there are no strangers. This school has helped me to grow as a person i used to be very shy but i learned to stand up for myself and advocate for myself as well. Going to this school has had its times of headaches and stress but i would never say i regret it. The teachers and staff are fantastic. They actually care. I had a teacher cry about how much she cared for us and it shows because they never give up on you. My professors at state are very helpful and they are a great source for networking for career opportunities. I feel like i am many steps ahead then most high school students. I am honored to be a part of the first class at STEM. Even though we feel like guinea pigs at times its still a great experience. I can't wait to be part of the first graduating students at STEM in 2 more years.
