My son was admitted as a last-minute lottery selection, and after only six months we made the decision to withdraw him and return to our base school. The environment at TMSA is relentlessly academic to the point of being emotionally damaging. My child became depressed, isolated, and disengaged.

The playground is inadequate at bestrecess is extremely short and children are sent to play in a parking lot. There is little to no sense of community or concern for social or emotional development. Academic performance is the sole priority.

Students are subjected to constant, high-pressure testing. Despite our child performing above Wake County and district grade-level averages, this was still treated as insufficient, and my husband and I were repeatedly made to feel like inadequate parents.

The most troubling outcome is that our eight-year-olds self-esteem suffered significant damage during his time here. No academic gains are worth the emotional cost this school imposed on our child.

My experience was not so good. I only spent a few weeks but wasn't satisfied the school was overcrowded and placed in the middle of the neighborhood so it blocked traffic creating a safety concern the teachers barely spoke English I only had two good teachers other times it was really bad. The safety was off and not something I've seen in a school because not all of us need medication or need the nurse but the nurse was usually just sitting in her office and I felt she could rotate one other school to help more kids I felt bad for her and the teachers don't seem to have basic training in basic first aid and simple CPR and they don't greet the kids they just assign us delta math and usually I'd be so disengaged because the teachers barely had structure that id watch YouTube. The only class I found interesting was the intro to engineering cause I liked my teacher because he likes the same stuff as me like thrill and the work was fun using fusion 360 the rest was horrible and the school inside of the school looked dull and boring. In fact when I toured my wcpss school I liked it 10x better and the staff where much nicer pls do not go to this school. These staff are not hands on and do not care about you they just care for the reputation and money the only reason why this school is good is because of the kids. In fact the kids look out more for you than the staff which is very sad. Overall pls don't come here it's a warning.

I attended this school for over nine years. It was, in my opinion, a horrible experience. Teachers assigned to much work, expected maximum effort from their students, and took no regard to actually teaching them. I dealt with bullying for over three years at this school, and it was not handled well. In actuality, it wasn't handled at all. This school offers 504 and IEP plans, but other than that they pay no attention to assisting students with mental disabilities, illnesses, or struggles. I experienced discrimination from my peers regarding my skin colour, weight, sexual orientation, gender, and religion. Students were allowed to be openly homophobic, transphobic, racist, ableist, etc, and teachers did nothing to stop it. The school doesn't reach out to parents when a student needs assistance, and if they do it's unlikely that help will be given. Teachers take days to respond to emails, and often times don't help the student out in the end. Overall, this school is not the school you want to send your child to. While it does have good academics, this school does NOT care for its students mental or physical health.

for starters i would like to explain each section carefully to show how my experience was at this school, first off, learning. I've only had two good teachers this year. the rest don't teach they just explain stuff and give us tests that arent even related to the topics we learned, I've recently had my math eog and let me tell you their were NO questions on the topics we learned, I mean we did have exponents and slopes and stuff like that but most of the questions are not related to the topics we learned. idk if I failed but I hope not because in this school your eog is 20% of your final grade, even though EOGs arent supposed to be apart of your final grade. if you fail at least one core class you have to repeat the whole grade or if your lucky you go to summer school. next, special education. My brother is in iep(individual education program) because he's a troubled kid, mind you he's only in kindergarten. because of the tantrums he throws the school is recommending him too move or transfer schools because apparently they don't have enough "resources", this school does not treat my brother well and I will not stand for it. teaching, like I said I've only had two good teachers this year the rest just explain random stuff to us and expect us too know everything. safety, I do not at all feel safe in this school, there's broken ceilings, sinks, toilet seats, etc.. i even saw RATS one time in the girls bathroom. overall the safety in this school is horrendous. as social emotinol support does not apply for me I will be skipping it. family engagement, this school has good family engagement but I still don't recommend, because they email your parents if your tardy abt 1 minute and that's completely useless. Overall this school did not fit for me so I wouldn't recommend, if you want too send your children to TMSA please read this so you can understand how its like being an 8th grade student In TMSA, they give out detentions for no reason and make you clean on Saturday fi you have tardys, idm summer school but repeating the 8th grade? it isn't highschool to get demoted like that, TMSA is just a horrible school covering themselves up to be a "A+" charter school, the only reason this school is an A+ school is because students are very diligent abt their grades and don't let them drop below a 70. anyways that's my expiernce in TMSA, I would not recommend your children to go here, unless you want to put them through hell and torture.

I've been going here for almost 4 years, and when I tell u its probably one of the worst environments i've been in. Admin literally will walk around and stare you down for dress code, and continuously harass you over little things? 12 tardies= Cleaning the school on a Saturday? So they can spend more money on coffee cups, and food for admin/principal. Ac's don't work, doors are continuously locked and they have cameras everywhere so they can watch you. They will follow you out of the school just to write u a detention? The continuously emails and text messages about a simple tardy or absence is absurd, no? If you want your child to have some sort of freedom and high-school life, do them a favor and don't enroll at tmsa. Possibly the worst experience of my life.

If you like independent learning, you can send your kid here and maybe they'll do okay, but if your child needs instruction, go elsewhere. We had a horrible experience and had a pull our child out. The teacher was terrible. Attitude was awful. Didn't do any actual lessons with the students. If I could give zero Stars I would.

My experience at this school was horrible. The teachers are just lazy and give a bunch of IXL homework which is absolutely rigged. The students do more work than the teachers teach them so the students have to learn by themselves. My parents and others think that this is the "#1 school in the whole entire state" and say that I am gonna get better grades in this school so they say that I'm gonna be in this school until I graduate high school. The teachers keep punishing the whole class when 2-3 people get in trouble an keep saying "we will from now on take specifics out to talk to them " but they just don't. They are very strict about the uniforms especially the TMSA jackets. When we don't have TMSA jacket and a different one in the building, they keep telling to put them in the lockers even in the cold classrooms. They give study halls during electives on Wednesdays which is just completely boring. They don't have AIG which almost all schools in the county have. They only focus on online learning most of the time. The school is called a smart school because of the students. If you are a parent and you are thinking of sending your child to this school then PLEASE DO NOT SEND THEM TO THIS SCHOOL.

Before writing this review I have thought long and hard about how I would express my emotions for this school in words. Before I begin I would like to say that I have gone through a lot before writing this. I have been through almost 3 quarters before writing this to explain how dreadful this school is. I will be going through each section individually to thoroughly go through this school to understand if this school is good for you or your child. First starting with learning. I have never been more discouraged or negatively charged to not learn, the curriculum in this school is not human-friendly, and it is not designed with the user or educator in mind. This school has shown me what a bad school is. I used to like going to school and learning because I knew it was good for me, but now I am completely unfocused and uninvolved. Next teaching, I have only had 1 good teacher here, all the others have been arrested or previously fired and I mean this with all respect but some have an accent I can't understand. For social and emotional support, I just want to say I have gotten none because I have 1.5 hours to shower eat do my work, and go to sleep as I get home at 8:30 and try to get 8 hours of sleep. I have tried my hardest but as soon as quarter 3 started I have not been able to meet my goal of 8 hours of sleep which is very unhealthy for my growing adolescent body. I will not be reviewing Special Education as that does not apply to me. I do not at all feel safe as in this school if we do not acquire "TMSA approved" wear they will take our hoodies and give out detention. The admin walks around like cops and gives out detention just because of our appropriate wear. I just feel this is completely ridiculous and they should have a normal dress code like other schools. For family engagement when my parents came for a tour of the school there were only a few teachers here after hours. My parents have also told me they don't feel they are involved in my school life. After my parents informed me of this statement I could not even deny this because this was the truth. I would inform you to keep your child or yourself away from this school as they have very unfair rules. We also are not even allowed to get days off for weather. We came to school when the roads were closed. We came to school in a hurricane. My friend's car even spun off into the forest as he was trying to get to school. This is why you need to keep your family away from this school. DO NOT GO TO TMSA!

This school has been good in the way that I've been able to meet nice new people but besides that, the teaching, curriculum, and everything else seems behind and I don't feel like I can learn properly and or safely at times. Many things happened and also they spend all their money on useless things like waxing floors but can't on things like lunches, equipment, or hiring proper staff ( its been almost 5 months and our Middle school counselor still hasn't arrived and there are so many things that are needed to be said and reported but it just cant happen.

This school is terrible. Lots of events are happening that are bad for the students who go here. Literally, no joke, there were 2 dead rats in the classroom, and when the students complained, they said nothing and simply ignored the issue. Also, this school likes to make students go in unsafe conditions. The week of Martin Luther King Day, we got a day off. But, since it was snowing, every school in North Carolina gave the week off. Except TMSA. They had 1 online day, and they made the parents drive to school in the cold conditions. The dress code is terrible, and it is very strange how they take your jacket away if it isn't a TMSA jacket. Speaking about the TMSA jackets, they are of horrible quality and can rip very easily. Despite being a new school, the school is very run down, with lots of rooms not having working heaters or AC condition, and they still take away your jackets. Lots of teachers don't have any empathy, and this school is very strange. I will never return.

Teacher staff is terrible. Teacher is giving pressure wrong way to students for MAP test result. Teacher is giving wrong impression and told they are really busy and have lots of work to complete. Even though this school has great teachers, the admin is making horrible choices for student life. They not only spend way too much money on building new schools, they can't even buy resources for teachers. For example, the gym was supposed to get equipment about two weeks after school started, but it still hasn't arrived-- in the second quarter. They also hire the worst people. Two of my teachers this year have no idea what they are talking about. This school was once a great school, but it has fallen far.

I am a recent alum of TMSA middle school and I can say with confidence that this school is an overall overrated school ever since the admin change. The sole reason why this school's grades and academics are high are because the students are very dilligent about their grades. Aside from a few teachers the majority of teaching that I have experienced have been Youtube videos and IXL. Most teachers don't teach anything on their own and usually its up to the students to figure out what to do. Along with this, the school's saftey isn't made with the students' well-being in mind. During my time at TMSA, they made us play in the parking lot with moving cars, constant bullying by both the teachers and students and no support for those struggling. Even at the beginning of this year TMSA failed to pass building inspection which meant that school had to be pushed back another week due to it not being fit to house students in its capacity. In conclusion, you are better off going to a public school because this is just a public school pretending that its better than a public school.

Pick up times are poorly managed and it can easily take over 30 min to pickup my son.

Also, my kid was bullied at this school. They rubbed curry in his hair. The teacher called him bainchod in front of his math class.

We were unable to speak with some teacher effectively because their English was very poor. That was very frustrating.

Our kid is in a new school now and is doing much better.

Other parents have shared our frustration with this school and the administrators.

The school is trying to force HS students to take AP classes whether it is appropriate or not. It is great that they offer AP classes but to attempt to force all students seems to go against providing an appropriate education for all.

Unfortunately, there seems to be a recent shift towards expansion compromising quality of education in this school. There is no Parent-Teacher Association, and parent grievances are ignored. There is no proper discussion or communication from the school on important decisions - for example, they decided to split 6th grade and rest of middle school in two different locations without considering the impact for the 6th graders who would miss out on advanced classes/clubs/band/sports that are part of the middle school experience. Expansion means there is a need for more teachers, but unfortunately good teachers are hard to find in the current market and existing teachers seem so overworked with large class sizes (close to 30 students per home room). There is more focus on practicing repeatedly for EOG tests, not much focus on teaching concepts or making things interesting for kids to learn. Kids spend more time on chromebooks in school and less time interacting with other kids or teachers. Most classrooms don't have windows and the play area is small/overcrowded considering there are close to 1000 kids in the building. My elementary kid does not even get a snack break after lunch (11am) and comes home extremely tired and hungry. There are no school buses, and the worse part is the carpool pickup time in the evening which typically takes 30-40 min waiting on the road outside the school campus (there are 9 grades in same building). There are frequent half-day/early release days which makes things even harder as we have to take time off from work for couple of hours in the middle of the day to pickup kids.

My child was straight AB honor roll student at his previous Charter before starting here at TMSA. I feel like theres a lack of connection and education with the teachers to the students. All they do is sit in front of the computer on IXL for learning.

The school is solely focused on test scores, only, and I feel that its more to it than testing the highest in the district or state. These children need more Academic understanding and their work and lessons being taught. I wouldnt recommend anyone bringing their children to the school. Ive had to literally hound them about parent teacher conferences. As they would never ever have any availability and scheduling, but give you the runaround about scheduling.

At my childs previous charter school it was no issue and scheduling any parent teacher conference, and they were always willing to help. But since he started, here has been nothing but chaos. I feel like a lack of care for the students and their education. im becoming super Duper frustrated and a lot of these children are already behind due to the era of the pandemic, so why stressed them further in their academics when all theyre doing is trying their best and putting in their effort.

Am planning on taking my child out of TMMSA this year and sending him back to his previous where they were excelling. The only reason why my child was going to the school was due to the convenience of it being close to our home, and I was under the impression that it was a great stem school. However, I know the blinding truth but it is not a great school.

Please send your children to a better charter or school as this one is not a good school. Not just my opinion it has been other parents I heard from that felt this way as well.

TMSA used to be good butnow it is just a very beloe average school wirh terrible quality of educators. If you understand what some of those international teachers say consider yourself lucky. Advamced core classes are taught by such inexperienced teachers for whom teaching is just maling kids sit infront of IXL the whole time. The schools admin is a joke. Their priority is expansion at the expense of quality. Those test score you see are from a predominant ethnicity from high earning neighborhood with supportive homes. 0% of that can be credited to school..

Bad academics. Kids spend their time on IXL and not being instructed by a teacher. Advanced classess are not good and not offered in all grades. Poor communication. The administration tries to say that the school is good but in reality it is much worse that WCPSS. We are looking to go back to WCPSS for SSA next year. Comming to TMSA was a mistake.

The central office sent parents an email asking for us to submit reviews. Here is my review: TMSA has gone downhill over the past few years. It is not the same school and does not provide the same academic riggor. Many of our great teachers have left, many long term families are leaving. Most of the families that I know are looking to move to new schools. The adminsiatration has shifted focus to expansion and has lost interest in provididing quality academics. The kids at the school test well so it looks like the school is doing better than it is. They have ruined a once great school. Stay away!

In touring this school and then talking with previous students and parents, it is obvious this school is lacking in many areas. Especially when it seems to concern bullying and favoritism. Ive had horrible experiences with this school and it has mentally triggered me. They shut their eyes when it comes to bullying, discriminating, beating up, and students getting teased. They never support the students and are always on the path of making them feel worthless and compare students in many ways. Absolutely disrespectful to females. There is no equality in this school. They treat kids who donate for the school different from kids who dont. Teachers are absolutely not educated and cannot speak english properly and teach students. They lie about grades and about reviews to look like a better school from the outside perspective. Do not waste your time with this school and ruin your kids future!!

went here, been through that living hell for 5 years, I cant look back at one happy day I had there unless I was sick. teachers and other students were absolutely terrible, much bullying, and now I'm so much more free at my new highschool and I'm getting better grades than what I had at TMSA, along with meeting more friends and people without being bullied. after getting out of TMSA, sometimes I ask myself before I would sleep if this is all real, due to so much freedom I received once I got out of that terrible school.

It is an easy for me to write this review because I am a long-standing parent who had four children at one point in the school. The quality of educators and staff know his really hard down.
At the main high school there is a nurse who is never available. The teachers for this year are big little lame and disrespectful to the children as they take out the registration down summer student. I have reported this all the way up the ranks and nothing has changed. My child has brought me a video evidence of the verbal abuse have been in the classroom.
Once upon a time it was a fantastic score but that is no longer.
Hopefully they will feel like a new principal soon and that will change things but in the meanwhile our family is done with the school.

Yes, All the teachers , the deans , the staff members and the Principal are very supportive.In this pandemic, they have worked really hard with kids to provide materials and guidance! The drive through activities like the reading parade and the winter parade are the biggest encouragement for kids during this stay at home situation.TMSA is the best environment for kids to grow.

A good school with good teachers, but a very lacking administrative staff. People have had to directly argue with the administrative staff to get what they need from them and their budgeting is poor. For example, the high school is not allowed to eat in the cafeteria and instead has to eat outside or in the high school entrance. Rather than use some of their budget to get chairs and tables for us, or even more academic supplies, they used it to buy four flat screen TVs that hang in the hallways and playing a slideshow of images. School lunches also seem to not be available, to get a lunch from the school, one has to register online with a service that brings fast food from various restaurants to the school and sells it to you. The community and community pride is pretty much non-existent, as most students really don't seem to care for the school. While the COVID-19 transition to online learning has been good, I would recommend sending your children to a better school if one is available.

I love the School and the teachers,i have 2 rising 1st graders and 1 rising 3rd grader,it will be our third year in school,the teachers are so very nice ,helpful and cooperative,they do their best to ensure the kids have the best learning experience and always encourage the kids to do their best,they have free tutroring for the students who need more work in certain area,they even offer free summer camp to give the students in need a boost before school starts,the administration are so nice and available whenever we need to talk to them,they also make a high consideration to the parents suggestions,needs and complaints,they offer a wide variety of clubs for after school,plus a great after school care program if you are a working parent and need more time for your kids to stay in school doing homework get a snack and do some other fun activities for until they get home for a family time.I love this school i can't think there is a better environment to have my children involved in.Thank you so much for the teachers and the admins for all what you do.

I totally disagree with the negative reviews on this site. I have two children who attend middle school at TMSA and it has been a wonderful, growth oriented experience. I feel grateful that they are in such a positive environment. The teachers are respectful, kind and considerate. Many of them volunteer their time for tutoring weekday afternoons and on Saturdays. The academic club team offerings are better than anything you will find in the local public schools and the students get to participate in many exciting contests. The classes are challenging and vigorous. The student body, as well as the teaching staff, is indeed very multicultural - which I feel is a huge plus and an advantage over the whiteness present in our local community and base school population. Because we do have experience with our children attending the local WCPSS base middle school I can clearly state that the difference is amazing. Our son attended what is considered one of the best WCPSS middle schools in the county and If the parents on here knew what that was like in terms of student behavior, discipline, etc. I feel like it would give them a whole new perspective.

I am a teacher at TMSA and my own children attend. This is a great school with teachers and staff who truly care about each and every child in their classes, and parents who are dedicated. We are a very diverse school with many cultures represented. It is more like the multicultural world our children will be working in in the future. A strong curriculum and more sports teams being added each year. It is not a perfect school but show me one that is! Overall this is a great place to work and the students seem to enjoy school each day.

I have two kids in TMSA since day one. This is a relatively young school. But it is already very successful. My kids were in Wake County schools before TMSA. I had teachers with fluctuating quality in Wake. One year good the other year bad... The teachers in TMSA are all very good. They are mostly very young teachers, getting experienced more and more every year, but their hearts are at teaching.
There is continuous communication with the parents. You know what is going on in the school. The admin is also very good. Especially Mr Kara. He is very welcoming. If there is any problem, you can easily reach him and he will listen and will do his best to solve your problem.
The PTO is also very dedicated. All the past two presidents and the current president put significant time and effort into school. The parents support the school a lot. Library, playground are a few examples of how parents supported the school
If you want to get a feeling about the school, you should visit on a weekend, you will find teachers, parents are tirelessly working with students on various projects.
I do not agree on some of the negative comments in this blog. Specifically about the ineffectiveness, and not teaching towards academically not gifted students. Both of my kids are not academically gifted but we are extremely satisfied with the education. I can see the growth.
I also don't understand why a parent sends their kid to a charter school that they criticize so much. At the end this is a school of choice. You can easily take your kid and place in county schools. It probably will serve well to the community too, as you will open a spot for another student. As I know there is a great demand for this school with more than 2000 students on the waiting list. In my sons classroom there are students coming all the way from Durham and Chatham counties. If the school was that bad none of those parents would drive or bus their kid that long.
The only issue that I would say is, the school is young and their policies are evolving every year. For instance after school care and club activities changed over the last three years quite a bid, which caused some frustration for some parents. But now they have a good variety of activities offered to the kids.
Overall I am quite happy and I highly recommend this school!

They are not just concern about being an A+ school or the best students in STEM. They are concern with every child having the best education. The school is Outstanding and I wish every school in Wake County could be like TMSA.

This is the worst school ever.I wish wake county would do something about it. I sent my child to this school with great hopes but it turned out to be a nightmare. It gets worse every other day. I really don't know where to start. Kinder garden, elementary, middle, high. ...All grades in the same building so it is extremely crowded. If your child is not academically gifted you can forget about him and his future. Nobody cares. They only focus on AAAA+++ plus kids who spend all their time studying . No activity.No socializing. If you want activity you need to send your kid to YMCA.Teachers are not initiative and they do nothing to win a child. If a student does something wrong she is immediately sent to detention.No talking to kids. No trying to win them.No trying to understand them. No counselors.No psychologists.Teachers do not want to deal with any issue. They have no patience.All they do is "OK. you spoke out loud- go detention- you did this mistake go out! that is all they do. Teacher is somebody who is trained academically and psychologically. A teacher needs to understand child's needs and should work hard to gain child's attention on the topic. These are like: sorry bring robots in front of us. they are easy to handle. Teachers don't know what to do and how to handle a class. even 2 kids argue they immediately call parents, because they don't want to be involved in anything. Administration does nothing about this. This school gives nothing but frustration to kids. None of the parents are happy. They accuse kids but not themselves.The worse is they even dont care and dont try to be better. The teachers are unexperienced. Most are not licensed so they are hired easily here.The teachesrs cant establish their authority so they send the kids to you or to discipline to be handled.if there is a good teacher but he couldnt meet the 100 grade goal then he is fired. We are new to TMSA this year (1st and 4th grades) and have been very pleased! One very surprising thing is that 4th grade is categorized with the middle schoolers. I was surprised to find that the 4th graders had 9 class periods, class changes, and even lockers! The teachers have high expectations (each teacher in the middle/upper grades teaches one subject and has a detailed grading syllabus), but I think this is a good thing because students will often rise to meet what is expected of them. In our public school, my older son alternated between science and social studies every 2 weeks...these are basic subjects that should be covered daily, not biweekly. At TMSA, not only does my 4th grader have Science and SS every day, he has DOUBLE periods of math, language arts, and science twice a week! He has learned more in science in the last two weeks than he did all of last school year. It's also great that the kids have academic clubs to choose from during the day -- Math Olympiad, Science Olympiad, Turkish Olympiad, and Lego Robotics. He is being academically challenged and it's great to see his renewed interest in learning. I'd like to see foreign language offerings for younger grades -- Latin, Mandarin, or French would be great. Perhaps options like these will be added as the school continues to add grades and staff. Parents are very involved and the administration seems supportive and open to new ideas and projects. I'm glad we made the change in schools.

This is our first year at TMSA and we couldn't be happier. My son is in 6th grade and had no problems fitting in and making friends. While our older daughter is in a large public school and doing great our son (who has an IEP) needed a smaller environment and more direct involvement with teachers and staff. He is getting that and so much more at TMSA and he is more confident than ever. The clubs and tutoring after school are wonderful and the kids take a foreign language (Turkish or Spanish) every day! No school is perfect but overall TMSA has met all of my (very high) expectations.

The teachers I experienced in math and science were terribly under qualified! Science was a complete bore with zero expectations and math was so scattered and ineffective that students had to teach each other. There was little to no communication with parents. Administration completely inadequate and ineffective. IEP's were not followed nor where they understood by most (I don't think the elective teachers even knew one existed). All around terrible experience!!

This schools administration is really pathetic in their efforts to portrait the school as an excellent one. Do not trust the burst of all these positive reviews which suddenly appeared in the span of 1 day . Come on, we all know who writes those! Overall the school is just an average, but greatly overhyped public school , with unqualified administration and teachers. One positive is that teachers here are enthusiastic and try really hard, but most of them are inexperienced and without proper degrees (masters) or state licenses. If you consider this school for your child ask the really hard questions to this administration: why the top students in Math and Science are leaving TMSA , why the school is barely an A- school , why most of the teachers do not have advanced degrees in education and teaching licenses, why there is such a high teacher turnover rate every year ????

I have two kids in TMSA since Day 1. They were from a Wake County public school. This is the best decision Ive ever made for my children. I was so sicken tired of the ignorance, lack of communication with teachers, uncertainty, ever changing policy on assigned schools and calendar with Wake County Public School System. I got all I need from TMSA: dedicated teachers, strong communication, challenging academic programs, small and flexible environment. You could never expect to have dedicated teachers in public schools as in TMSA. The teachers may not be perfect but they definitely put their hearts and time in. Teachers are very responsive to parents concerns and questions. Ive never been ignored for any questions, either through emails, phone calls, or personal conversation (not just 10-min teacher conference a year). Parents have plenty opportunities to be involved in school activities, get to know and talk to teachers, admin staff, and the Principal. I volunteered in public school before but feel differently when I do in TMSA. There were hiccups in the past three years. Again, this is a new school. It took three years to have nice classrooms, labs, gym, library, and auditorium. It will take time to establish rules and orders as well. I believe that Wake County high school assignment system is a big contributor to the fact that some students are leaving. Students have to get in an elementary-middle-high school path to be able to get in a desired high school. 2015-16 will be the first year of high school in TMSA. I understand some parents concern about new high school's curriculum. Lets wait to see.

TMSA is a great school where your child will be challenged academically but supported along the way when needed. It is a true diverse school, so your child and family needs to value diversity and be comfortable with it. For my particular child, it has been better than the traditional public school in Wake County: Northwoods Elementary, Davis Drive Elementary and Reedy Creek Elementary. My child has found the success he was denied in the traditional public schools.

As a teacher myself I can tell you TMSA is a more demanding and challenging school than any of the highly desirable independent schools in the triangle. I would not trade TMSA for any other school in the triangle.

Happy with most of the teachers except some Turkish ones that the management feels obligatory to employ. The school prepares the young minds in academics in a very competitive manner & has extra activities including clubs that benefit the students. What I dont like is how they try to solicit money for funding these extra activities. Its like a private school where everything needs to be paid for.

I am pulling my kid out of this school. Terrible administration, teachers are somewhat OK, but greatly stressed and overworked. Small number of kids are doing great in the Math and Science Olympiads, but that is due to their own hard work outside the school. Curriculum completely chaotic, no proper textbooks. Food for thought : if you want to send your kid at TMSA look at the cold facts - most of the gifted/smart kids are leaving this school , and teacher turnover rate is ridiculously high.

I am overall very happy with the school. I will be honest - initally I had doubts and was seriously considering if had to change the school. I stuck around for the year and am totally impressed with the school and its management. School and its PTO is awesome! Several oppurunities are created for the kids - not just acadamically but also for the extra-curriculars. Very responsible teachers. Less than a day or 2 turn-around for emails. The school infra-structure has improved too - new auditorium, new gym, new playstructures. I call this growth! I am so gald I didnt make any hasty decissions and happy to send my kid to TMSA.

This year was our first year at TMSA and we had an amazing experience to be part of an academic team in this school. This year my child participated in Elementary Science Olympiad and received three medals. With this, I realized how important it is to do volunteer work and to be involved in academic teams as a parent. Our Science Team did pretty well at the regional and received various medals and trophies. I also heard that the parents and students have been studying diligently to get the best outcome that they can get in other academic teams.Compared to traditional public schools, you see a whole new level of commitment to creating a school family; with parent coffee nights, weekend school, STEM Expo s along with all the academic opportunities and everything. If anybody would like to compete and challenge themselves at Geo-Bee, Spelling Bee, Math Counts, Science Olympiad, and all the others that I cannot count at once, send your child here. This is a fight/bullying free school. It has a welcoming atmosphere and feels very secure for the parents and students in the building. The new Principal is also very willing to work with parents.

I am a parent of a child that goes to this school since it started. Although the school is good for academic achievers, it has been lacking in some other areas. There are a lot of recurring disciplinary issues at this school and the administration isn't doing much to fix them. My child will be leaving this school this year, so are most of the girls in her class. Unless the administration does something about fixing them and improve communication with parents, this school will not thrive for long.

TMSA Science Olympiad team did an awesome job in the recent regional science Olympiad competition. The team placed 2nd in varsity team and 3rd in junior varsity team. This The kids had been preparing very hard since the last year and used to meet every Saturday with their event partners. SO team coach was available all the time to answer the kids queries and his knowledge and experience was awesome. They even studied for extended hours after the school hours to prepare for the competitions. The kids participated with great spirit and enthusiasm in all the events on the competition day. All these hard work really helped very well in placing the school in the top positions. Go Tigers!!

I have two children attending for their first year. One child struggles with reading while the other started manifesting severe behavior issues right after starting. The administration helped my family find ways to help both of them. Both of my children are doing much better now. Also, my son had a problem with bullies at his past school (and just getting into mischief!). At this school, so many of the students share his interests in mathematics and engineering that he feels much more confident. I don't know what the future will hold, but I will be glad to send in a re-enrollment form instead of filling out applications for 10 schools like past years!

This school is just amazing my son is in 7th grade and he enjoys the school climate so much. The school is coming along great and I can already see higher grades from my son. The faculty gets everything done in time and for the students well being. There are sports clubs and there is a promise for sports teams in 2014-2015 school year! TMSA Tigers are so successful with their countless achievements in chess, math, science, robotics, and talent. They offer turkish and Spanish and my son has enjoyed it. This is my family's first year with TMSA and WOW! What a year! My child went from doing not so well in his classes to really becoming motivated and working diligently and earning all A's and B's at this school. The curriculum is challenging and hard and I am seeing material that is +1 to +2 years above his grade level. He is thriving! The teachers have all worked so hard helping him to achieve his academic goals and have been so responsive. I got an email from his Social Studies teacher back in 5 minutes! 5!! Nowhere else have I seen this level of dedication from the staff and administration! Way to go TMSA! We will definitely be staying !

Our daughters 2nd year. 4 th grade she Love the teachers she has had, Many are young and will to work hard in working for what best for the student. .Art teacher is very cool all the kids love him, PE teacher is great in working with all the groups from KG to 7th, This fall we will have a new full furnished gym. Along with a new up to date media center, All the class rooms have new smart broads. Teachers are willing to work with any parent . The school has several after school clubs ,Free all can go if they chose to or the child can go to tutoring for extra help, I love seeing all the Academics clubs and the awards they earn. We enjoy the parents support the school has, Several are in the school each week.. We paid for buses pick up in several area of the country. The buses are also used in field trips, farms,zoo,local museums. We just did a weekend trip to DC 4-7 grade with staff and parents. It was a great learning trip . You can bring lunch or we have a local caterer reasonable. TMSA saved my child! Public schools refused to work with him or recognize his talents hiding behind learning disabilities. The caring staff at TMSA worked with him and allowed him to learn in the way that works best for him. He is now one of the top in his class surrounded by incredibly gifted children from all over the world. At TMSA they look for every child's gifts, and if you are willing to help and encourage your child to participate, he/she will shine here. The teachers are the most devoted educators I have ever seen.Teachers will come to your house to help your child if they need to, but TMSA won't promote a child to a higher level until they are ready. Some say this is unfair, but public schools limit gifted courses to very few students. At TMSA any child that shows interest or ability gets advanced opportunities, even if they are not the "favorites" of their teacher. If you do not want your child to be immersed in an environment where being smart is cool and learning is expected to continue outside the classroom, then this school is not for you. I give thanks every day for TMSA and how it has changed our lives in so many wonderful ways.

I would just like to say I am soo thankful for the Saturday tutoring. It's an extra, free option for my child to succeed! There are certified teachers that tutor on Saturdays which is amazing! Do you know another school that does this? If tutoring starts at 10 then why would you show up so early? If a mall opens at 10 do you show up at 9 and complain they did not let you in? I have always been taught if you show up somewhere too early then it shows you do not respect others time. Let me say again.. It's a Saturday. They are educators, not babysitters so quit whining that you couldn't dump your kid on them for more than 3 hours ON A SATURDAY! I have a solution for you.. A) offer to help, B) come on time and say thank you, or C) don't go!

I pulled my children out of this school after one full year and a bit of another year. There are too many problems within this school for me to list, and other parents have listed several of them, all valid. The teachers are over-worked to an extreme. There is absolutely no organization between administration and teachers, teachers and parents, or administration and parents. It was so stressful for our family while the kids were in school. Our 10 year old had 11 teachers, moving from class to class, not leaving time enough to change classes and actually settle down to learn for the next class. It was complete and utter chaos, and I joke not. Although I do think this school *may* have future potential, I would never send my kids back to this school. They made a lot of promises, almost all which were broken. We are now very satisfied with our public school. There is order, communication, less worksheets to fulfill and more class time. The stars this rating asks me to fill out does not include "administration," in which I would give a one star. Some of the teachers are fairly good, and some don't speak English well and are very hard to understand.

Math classes are not nothing but worksheet. I thought my child would get a challenging curriculum in this school, but obviously he does nothing but worksheet in his classes. Clubs are optional and very good opportunity in this school. Children loves their art teacher, he is very friendly. Enjoying P.E. classes at school. The fact that my previous comment was deleted says a lot. I fell for the hype and promptly removed my son from this school soon after. I believe the school has potential but I will not take that gamble with my son. I didn't like that the two classes on the same grade level were not in sync. One teacher gave homework while the other did not. We came from a charter school in another state that had the same weekly homework packet for both classes in a grade level. They taught the same lessons and followed the same curriculum. They helped those who needed it and stimulated those who were thriving. There was never anything different going on in the classrooms of the same grade level. The teachers were also HIGHLY qualified! Also being told about last minute changes and events is tacky and unprofessional. Carpool line was insane too! However the parents were extremely friendly and helpful. I do miss the warmth and unity amongst the parents but the school was not for my family.

In the beginning I was one of the biggest advocates for the school in the community, and TMSA s first year was wonderful -- the teachers were caring and engaging and children completely enjoyed going to school. Unfortunately this school year has been a different story. For whatever reason, it is painfully clear that the administration is not communicating effectively with the teachers and parents or apparently with each other. For example, if you ask one administrator a question, either they will put you off or refer you to another individual. Many things are announced at the last minute to where people do not have enough time to adequately prepare for these events.

I have a child at TMSA and, like a number of other reviewers, am so glad we were able to get him in. It's disappointing to see the overall average scores on here, but would note that there aren't a lot of 3's as much as many who love the school (4-5) and others who gave very low scores. Some of those unhappy people left and, although it may sound unpleasant to say, I'm very happy they did. They had the wrong priorities in my opinion and I'm happy to not have their influence anymore either directly or indirectly through their kids. The school is new still and there have been bumps in the road, but that's to be expected when you start an entirely new and ambitious enterprise. I could write quite a bit, but characters are limited. Quick takes then: Curriculum: challenging and advanced. Teachers: dedicated and very hardworking. Projects: allow problem solving and creativity - Good for them and the other kids hearing about them. Atmosphere: At his old school, it was 'uncool' to be a smart kid and to love learning and respect your teachers. At TMSA, that's 'cool'. Uniforms: Love them! Small classes: Allow individualized attention and I love that the kids are growing up together.

We have been in this school from day one! This year is great !! Wonderful Hard working staff, Caring teachers always willing to help ,Building is a dream. Very High Tech.Smart broads,PC, safety is top of the list!! Will be a great school for our son to grown in,Yes he has some learning problems but they have IEP in place and Doing very well. Love having afterschool clubs,Sports,Lego,Chess ,Band,crafts,volleyball so many all free and teachers leading , I have read that some were not happy with the school but parents must be involed and want to know what going on and support the school.Had been in a magnet just to big, Love the small classes 20 we get to know all the kids and will be growing up with them till 12 grade we hope. lead them and many parents help also. PTO is working to help out in many areas for the school. Saturday clubs are great if that what you want to do. After school help with studies free, Afterschool day care till 6:00,We ride a bus that meets at the local K mart ,We pay but worth it! We are Very happy.Appears some were not and it is best they left,Our children are well cared for the teacher are Very caring,Alway answers email,etc Many parent just want to complain and never come in to the school But that ok.All children have a agenda (unless they lost it) KG-7 grade each child is treat special.The classes are fill with all levels of children ,Many parent do not understand or want to help.BUT we are a warm group of parents/teacher/support staff, Always working for the best in our child(we have 2) I Am in the school 2x a months ,I see and know what happens ,Each must deside,This is a strong school and will be a outstanding school from KG - 12 , New building,Clean, safe, Please come look at the school ,see for your self don't let some sour person take away a chance you may have for a strong ,well rounded education for your child, As for clubs they are great , Many are teacher lead,Math.choir,band,etc many parents lead,Free Tutoing and even on weekends from your child teacher if needed, All you have to do is be a concerned parent you see this is the best charter around !

This is an excellent school! It is in its second year. They sent out the EOG results for last year. I am so happy to see that TMSA performed better than almost all of the schools in Wake. I am so glad that my kids are in TMSA. That is an impressive start for the first year. I am so impressed with the progress in both academics, facilities, staff development. Thank you so much and keep up the good work!

Not satisfied with how the school treats and involves students in the learning process. If your child is not well above average, than there is no hope for success or support. I would have to agree with other parents as the school is very discriminative with regards to gender and nationality. The teachers are very young and expect students in lower grades to already "know" . Teachers are unresponsive to inquiries and they are also not well-informed about processes. Students have no agendas or syllabi...but come home and say they have a big test the next day. Young children should not have to cram the night before a test! Teachers should make parents aware of learning initiatives and provide parents with an agenda/syllabi especially for 1st & 2nd graders and not expect the children to write down or take notes on what they say (not in 1st or 2nd grade). It is a "weed out" school. If you are not academically gifted, then there is no challenge. The clubs are a joke and tutoing is NOT tutoring as they advertise. Hoping all the best as the school grows and matures.

Both our kids are in this school...I have heard bad reviews...please spend time to find out how good this school is...our family loves the school, the staff ...they r in a new building now , I would give them some time to get into routine...the kids are happy and so are we...

Awesome school! My daughter did very poorly last year, but we expected that having recently moved from Nash county. The teachers worked with her, and the dean called me to set her up in the weekend tutoring to help her catch up. My daughter is extremely happy here!:)

The last comment of a parent on the 23 of OCT is the summation of this school. We will get conflicting messages from this school. Why is our tax dollars going to such schools. The teachers are not satisfied. If this is a true public funded school, we the teacher and parents needs to be able to vote for the board and Admin. I will keep my kid in the 5th grade for another year and work with the PTO for some changes but if nothing happens.

Very unorganized school, kids are not being taught by credentialed teachers, some just have college degrees, I believe they are even fudging the grades, as my child got almost all A's and he is defnitely not that academically gifted. Current principal very unresponsive, never has time to speak with you always puts you off to someone else and current dean is not qualified to answer any questions regarding academics. Thier favorite saying is "speak to your teacher". The school has no windows, the kids have a very limited physicial time, they get PE once a week for 40 minutes and the clubs leave alot to the imagination. Go to a magnet school or stay where you are!!

I have had no complaints about the school. Any issues that may arise are easily handled by a simple phone call to the school to find out who can help. If we simply try to find a positive solution, the school will work with you. The staff, administration and teachers are all dedicated and wonderful. The students are fortunate to have Triangle Math and Science Academy in Raleigh.

We have been sending our kid to TMSA for a year now.we saw the lack of organization and adminstartion skills across the board. I do like to credit the admnistartion for working hard to make things happen during the first year but a recent event really disappointed me. our kid has food allergies and carries Epi-pen. we had provided the same to the school administration at the beginning of the school year. Today being the last day of school, we went to pick the epi-pen back but no one knew where it was stored. How can one expect them to administor epi-pen, on time, if need arises. unless you have a kid with food allergies it's very hard to comprehend the consequence of not beign able to administor the medication on time. The kind of insenstivity the principal showed when unable to find the epi-pen was dissappointing. Hopefully they will fix this by start of next school year and keep track of things. This is a life threatening situation for a child. They cannot ignore things which can harm a kid's life, and need to be more organized and be responsible.

Upper Grade The science club was better than the science class. Did they every get a book yet? You do more Art work in History. LA great vocabulary words, hum... Math yeah great OK now how is all this used in the real world? I pulled my child out and I don't regret it. The administration was fine with me. I wasn't there to make long life friends. The teachers were passionate about their work. I do give them that much credit.

Triangle math and science is barely a year, but one thing i have come to appreciate is the student population that is representative of the "real world: where you see kids who are Asian, black and white well represented. In most of the "good performing" charter schools that I know, the kids are mainly white and not exposed to the real world. When this kids get to corporate America and other higher institutions they are going to have to learn to learn about people who are different from them. Just check out the big companies in RTP, especially in the technical fields, multiculturalism rules. Good performing all white schools, watch out, your kid may be getting all A's but when they get out in the real world they will have to learn to interact with different cultures to succeed.

This is an excellent school! I am so glad we got our kids in to TMSA last year. We would have no chance next year, as I heard there were more than 700 applications for only 10s of available spots. I read some of the negative reviews and I am so surprised with them. The teachers are doing their best and involved in education not only just in the classroom, but also with many different activities outside. All the teachers are highly motivated. They organize science fairs, train students for competitions. They visit students and parents at home. These people are working 7 days a week. Administration is very open. You can talk to them. They will listen and do the best for your child. I don't agree with "second class citizen students" comment. If anything, they focus on improvement of each student individually. There were couple of teacher resignations in the first few months. I respect to those teachers. But I also know that not every school is for every teacher. This school is for people, who wants to involve in education 7 days a week. I think the current downtown location is a limitation to many other things that they can do. I am looking forward for the new building. GO TMSA!!!

This school was a great disappointment. Our child went from being at the top of his class at his old school to being treated like a second class citizen at this school. Students who are not in the advanced classes are picked on by the students who are. The faculty and students treat them differently. Volunteering allowed me to see the inner workings of this school, and it was scary!!! The administration is clueless, and they don't seem to care about the children. They give no support to the teachers. The teachers seem to try , but there is so much they can do. Three experienced teachers who really seemed to care have left. They have hired young, inexperienced teachers to take their places.The "play area" is dangerous. There is so much more wrong with this school that I can't list everything. My child is now going to a regular public school , and that school is MUCH better!!!! My advice:Do NOT send your child to Triangle Math and Science Academy. If you do, volunteer and keep a close eye on the situation.

We've been pleasantly surprised at the level of academic vigor our son is receiving at Triangle Math and Science. It has been a rough 1 yr at the Downtown Raleigh location. I'm glad to know the final location is in Cary. The skies the limit regarding this school.

Wonderful school and staff. A little disorganized but it just opened its doors in Fall 2012 so can't be too hard on them. Very challenging and lots of fun for my first grader. I am reading some comments about the principal being "culturally insensitive", I think he is actually very nice and much more approachable than WCPSS principals that I have dealt with in the past. The clubs and after school activities are great. Within a year or two, once its established and has a new building, it bet it will have a long waiting list and will be hard to get in. I am glad my 1st grader is in, from the very beginning.

I have two children at the school, and both are doing very well this year. My oldest was always bored at two other WCPSS schools. It seems that 4th-6th is where they start to really challenge the kids, as they begin changing classes in 4th. There are obviously some things that must be worked out in a first-year school and there has been some turnover, but once the permanent location is settled, I believe this will be a highly sought after school by parents not happy with WCPSS. Teachers have been great and instrumental in getting the school on their feet, and my oldest is doing things I didn't even think about until +2 grades later (and I was Advanced/AP)! If you have children of superior intellect, I would recommend this school. If you have lower children or special needs requirements, look elsewhere. Their clubs/after school activities are very good for the first year and will expand next year. 4th-6th get foreign language AND Science every day! You won't find that in most public schools. Class sizes of 20 are a blessing after classes of 31 kids last year at our base school.

This is the first school in his six years of public education that has gotten my fifth grader excited about learning. His science teacher is absolutely phenomenal and they are constantly doing hands on experiments. He is definitely being challenged more than he was at his previous schools, both academically and in organizational ways as he learns to change classes for the first time and be accountable to more than one teacher. I am just as pleased with my third grader's teacher. She is organized, communicates well with parents and constantly makes changes in the classroom to meet the needs of her students. Yes, there are some ups and downs as it is the first year of the school and the current location is quite cramped with little outdoor space. However, the positives definitely outweigh the negatives. My kids are quite happy here and that is what matters most to me.

No disrespect to any of the teachers in which English is not their first language, it is very difficult to understand or if they understand what I am saying. My children have seen multiple children randomly leave this school and teachers as well. one of my children has had 4 language arts teacher as of the end of October. I just found out another teacher(which makes this the 5th teacher ) has left. I just found out that the school does not know where the school will be permanently located. Initially, I was told and it was indicated on the internet that it would be off of 540 by Aviation. Again, nothing but confusion, stress, and lack of clarity for this school.Both my children indicate that they do not want to go back there and are not motivated at this school. I personally do not feel that the teachers are not getting the support they need. I believe that they cater to the male gender as well as specific cultures. I agree with the other review that this school has potential but since my children are impressionable and miserable, I will not wait until this school has it together.

I had high hopes for TMSA that have not been fulfilled. I am not convinced that they are following the NC Standard Curriculum; there is no school nurse, school counselor, or full-time custodian; it took 9 wks to put soap dispensers in the bathrooms, clean the yard that was scattered with debris, & hire a P/T custodian; there are students whose IEPs and 504 plans are not being met; children were not allowed to drink water throughout the day; for 20 mins a day during recess, 6th graders just sat at their desks, windows weren't opened for fresh air, and they rarely went outside; my child was moved w/o valid explanation from advanced math & science classes despite consistent 4s on the EOGs and As in the TMSA classes; my healthy child contracted bacterial pneumonia, as did many of the staff & students. Many of the teachers are hardworking and get little support from Administration (particularly the women). My daughters complained to me of subtle gender discrimination amongst the student body from 1 or 2 of the male teachers. TMSA has the potential to become a successful school. In the meantime, as the parent of middle schoolers, we cannot afford to wait for that day.

If your kid is a male and is a genius this school is for you. Academic content is challenging, +/- 1-2 years above grade level but as with all things there is a price to pay - it's freedom of thought. The way the school is run it's their way or you can go back to WCPSS. Unless you luck out and get into the A classes in 4-6th grade right from day one, your chances of getting in later from the B classes is slim as there are only 20 spots in the A class, and if your child is identified as gifted but in a B class they will not be challenged at all. Because there is no gifted teacher they can not have a gifted program to challenge all the kids that deserve those services. You're better off staying at a magnet school if that is an option for you, plus there are no electives to speak of for middle schoolers. Except for the academic clubs, and advanced chess, all the other clubs are for entertainment even though they may be called tutoring. You do not get individual help in tutoring. The principal needs some serious social skills and cultural sensitivity training when it comes to the treatment of women. Their cultural values really do influence everything. Go elsewhere.

I am a student here at this school and am not impressed! First of all we CANNOT have any water or food during class! The teachers are soo mean. If your misbehaving they put you out in the hallway and scream at you. They give us 8 projects in a quarter which totals 40 projects in a year! We have soo much homework that I now NEVER have time for my family. Do you think teachers care? NO! They get mad if you don't get your homework done, but they give us soo much, thats it too hard to get to bed before 10. Also if you misbehave they might give you a " citation". A citation is where you get basically get reported to the principal. If you get a curten amount of citations you get kicked out of the school!They expect way too much. For tutoring you do homework and NOT learn. Oh and Bullying let me not start. My brother gets constantly bullied and they don't care! Seriously. The principal does nothing even though it against the NC law! Bathrooms are GROSS! And then they wonder why kids get sick! Staff sucks espically principal! Go to some other school like Lufkin MS or Mills Park!

Management has no clue about running school. They don''t care about kids health and well being. Weird rules such as kids can't drink water from water bottle they carry, can't use bathroom twice, no snack break. The building is suffocating and kids complain about dirty bathrooms, no door lock, no soap and toilet papers in the bathrooms.
