Lead by fear. This pretty much sums up the teaching style at Thales in Apex. Children are threatened with suspension for everything, teachers that develop relationships with parents are terminated, and the office administration is never held accountable.
The fifth grade graduation preached integrity, yet the staff have none. No transparency, no proactive communication, just silence.
I was told by staff today that when they hear high heels walking the halls of Thales Apex 4/5 grade, all the teachers have to mentally prepare. We pulled both kids out of both schools because honestly, they started off great, but have been a dread for both my wife and I as well as our kids. Just avoid it. Its not worth the mental despair or extra disdain for the administration.

We were thrilled to move to Thales a few years ago after a disappointing experience at a fairly well reviewed WCPSS school. Yes the teaching turnover this year has not been ideal. However, our public school experience was not good - kindergartens given massive laptops to bring home every night and use in class, serious and repeated behavioral problems that distracted kids from learning without recourse, a change in reading where reading levels no longer exist and an odd, unqualified staff hiring. In contrast, Thales offers a great classical education curriculum, the administration is receptive to receive and incorporate feedback/make changes, teaching staff has been really good overall, disciplinary issues are dealt with and parents are highly engaged. Our Thales experience has been overwhelmingly positive.

My son has attended this school since Kindergarten and initially I was really happy with the education that he received. The first year is always tough and it's a big adjustment. The Kindergarten teachers worked with him and I found that through his first 3 years there I felt that his education was top notch. He's a normal boy but feedback that kids with any neurological deviations are not given help is correct. Thales is NOT the school for them. Those kids are given no extra anything. This last year, however, has left a lot to be desired. The teachers now are simply following a script and giving them information not to engage the students and make them think ( that's why I sent him there if the 1st place) but only to have them pass tests. When I had a meeting with one teacher her only response was that she was told to do it that way and it's not changing. She also told me that if he paid more attention to what she said that he would be doing better. My child has never had that feedback before her. My opinion is that she simply doesn't want to do her job. Thales teachers used to want to engage their students but now it's simply to pass tests. If that's all the kids are there for now...No thanks! I'm seriously considering pulling him out next year. They also abruptly announced the entire administrative staff was gone. No explanation...Nothing. Super strange. Parents are not engaged either. It's like they don't want us around anymore. Again, super strange.

We really wanted to love this school, but it has been less than a month and things are not looking good. I had a bad feeling about the new Head of school, he is a previous Math teacher who has zero personality and does not know how to address a crowd or even talk to parents in a Christian, empathetic manner. He will quickly blame your child and take no accountability for what his staff does or doesn't do. I can only reach him via email, many times when he called me back it was from an unknown number. The 21-year-old Math teacher quit after 2 weeks and couldn't even finish her last few days because she had a Wedding to attend, not sure why she would tell the kids about it, I guess it's to make sure they feel like they don't matter. The substitute apparently doesn't let the kids use the bathroom when they ask and threw away another kid's eraser because she considered it a toy. They'll tell you there will be no homework the night before a test, but it keeps happening. Last Friday my kid had 5 tests, the night before she had to complete over 35 questions between Math and Reading assignments. This is a review for the new JH Campus in Apex. There is nothing Christian about this place, I was told "well with over 700 students it's hard to keep track of all of them".

We were initially very impressed with Thales Academy. The staff was welcoming, the facilities were excellent, and the academic structure appeared well thought-out. We especially appreciated the emphasis on classical education and the stated alignment with a Judeo-Christian worldview.

However, after reviewing the kindergarten curriculum more closely, we discovered a unit on Native American culture that referenced totem poles. Given the spiritual significance totem poles can hold in some Native traditions, we reached out to the school with a respectful request to opt out of any associated craft activity, as it conflicted with our religious beliefs.

To our surprise, the school responded by stating that, while students would not be making totem poles, no accommodations or modifications would be permitted for any part of the curriculumeven when a family's religious beliefs are at stake. This was deeply disappointing and, quite frankly, shocking. As parents, we expect academic institutions to uphold both educational excellence and a degree of flexibility when it comes to deeply held matters of conscience. The blanket refusal to consider any religious accommodations is, in our view, inconsistent with the ideals of tolerance and respect that should be central to any school environment.

While we understand the importance of maintaining curricular consistency, we did not anticipate encountering such a rigid stance, particularly at a school that claims to value a worldview rooted in Judeo-Christian principles.

We chose not to enroll our child. We hope the school will reconsider its approach in the future and find a more balanced way to support families who want to engage in their childs education while honoring their faith.

If your child has a learning disability(dyslexia or dysgraphia), do not send them here. They are not equipped to support these needs. If a child is not keeping up with the class because of these challenges, they will be placed alone and unassisted in the hallway on the floor to complete work. It's educationally inappropriate - the child is being punished for a neurological condition they cannot control, rather than receiving the specialized support they need. If your child does not have any learning disabilities, then Thales is a decent school.

I wanted to love Thales as it was a godsend to us the first year after some time in public school. My child reported an immediate increase in confidence and we saw their abilities grow instantly. Unfortunately, that was the first and last positive year at the elementary school. Since then, there has been a decline in joy over school subjects. I feel this is due to multiple reasons. 1) Overly strict grading, often holding extra expectations outside of the direct directions on an assignment. 2) Teachers are unresponsive to questions and often evade direct answers, leading to a lack of effective teaching. My child has frequently reported being told, "I can't help you with that," when seeking assistance. This echos in parent experience as we are referred to outside resources rather than provided in-house support. 3) The school's approach to emotional and social support is inadequate. Lunchtime is largely silent, and the aftercare program emphasizes quietness over social interaction, with no homework help offered. Instead, students are directed to assist each other (guess we could consider that socialization?) 4) The demerit system is fine except when they are received for posture, throwing away food, or standing up for yourself. It loses its meaning quick when behaviors are micro-managed which Thales excels in. 5) Safety is a positive aspect, with a secure building; however, if a child doesn't fit the "quiet, type A" mold, they may experience a type of discrimination from staff. 6) I've observed teachers being unnecessarily harsh, including instances of yelling, which are laughed off. 7) Family engagement feels minimal unless youre contributing snacks or lunch parent time. 8) Communication about my child's progress is lacking and often feels like navigating a political conversation as a direct answer or real support is near impossible. 9) Despite the advertised selective entrance process, all students are accepted, resulting in a classroom environment of diverse needs, which the school doesn't cater to effectively and puts the blame on your child.
Overall, I feel this school falls short in fostering a nurturing and supportive educational environment. If your kid has zero personality or you want to squash their creativity and social awareness, then Thales is a great fit.

Student standards are low for this school. Anyone can apply and attend, which is fine, but may as well attend public school without the tuition. Parents wish they would focus more on the quality of student admitted versus the quantity crammed into the classrooms.

Our child asked to switch to Thales Academy, from a top WCPSS public school our kids had attended for years, because our eldest was so happy at the JH/HS. We made the mid-year switch despite being unsure about the Direct Instruction model (which we discovered is AWESOME!), and the difference was stunning. Our child immediately loved going to school, made wonderful friends and was learning leaps & bounds more. We are thrilled to have our kids academically challenged and in an affordable school that emphasizes good character, writing/grammar and how to think, not what to think, but more than that, the joy that accompanied our childs transfer to Thales Academy was positively life changing. Students are highly engaged, dont sit all day (2 Recesses in K!), model integrity/positive values, learn at their level + are in a safe environment without discipline distractions. We are so grateful for the solid education and positive school culture & experience Thales Academy gives our kids.

The teachers are fantastic!! They care about each student and work hard every day to create a positive learning environment. The ability to have different teachers for some subjects gives kids a more diverse learning experience and a broader sense of community within their school. Additionally, the Direct Instruction method keeps kids engaged and is a very effective learning method. We were scared Direct Instruction would be robotic, but it has helped our kids learn more quickly and not get bored because it is so interactive. Thales Academy teachers and their teaching method get an A+ from us!!

Character lessons are integrated into the curriculum; integrity, compassion and respect are expected; and positive values are even incorporated into the school's aesthetics with inspirational quotes and posters throughout the halls and classrooms. We appreciate the fact that kids are able to learn at their individual level and that differentiation is built in in a positive way that keeps learning at the forefront. No one is made to feel bad for being at a different level or pace, and a student can always advance or repeat material as needed. The goal is mastery of material, and kids emerge at their appropriate pace with mastery. Students are challenged, but appropriately, and it is mostly rigorous in just the right way for each individual.

Teachers are OK, it really depends. Your child may be in 1st grade for one subject and the teacher may be great. However, your child my be in 2nd grade for another class and have a sub all year . Very odd and confusing process.

After several months at the Holly Springs location, we were terribly disappointed. Our child was reading at home 2nd grade level books. However, our child was in 3 different grades for reading, math, and writing. Our child felt very odd and out of place being with kids younger than her part of the days and then older. We moved our child after several months at Thales HS and in just a few days she is happy and flourishing!

Moved our four kids to Thales from what we felt were excellent Wake County public schools because we wanted them all together, on the same calendar, same location, etc. That was four years ago and couldn't be happier with our decision. The curriculum is demanding but appropriately so. I'd rather not see my kids breeze through each class -- I want them challenged. Homework is not gratuitous and teachers seem genuinely engaged and happy to be there. Class sizes are on par with public schools but after extensively researching private schools my impression is you can have only two of the following: quality teaching, small class size, and low tuition. Extracurriculars are good for us, but might be lacking for some who want to play football or lacrosse, for example. No school is perfect.
Overall we have been very happy and have no plans to leave.

Thales promotes character education in elementary school as something that sets them apart. Unfortunately, Thales has missed the mark completely. There is a systemic problem from the elementary school through the high school of bullying and exclusivity. The bullies often get rewarded at the elementary level with character awards, which sends a message that it is ok to treat others poorly. Teachers do not help in any way with this issue. The principal at the elementary level is horrible. There have been numerous complaints about her, but she is still there. I would discourage anyone from meeting with her individually because she is an expert at turning things back on the victim and blaming them. She will make up stories to about your child to put them in a bad light rather than address the issues with the children who are at fault.

Thales as a whole is not a warm environment. There seems to be a large teacher turnover rate considering how small of a school it is.

Academically, they are inflexible. If your child needs more of a challenge, they will not differentiate the work. The math curriculum is extremely repetitive, and the review from the year before takes up the entire 1st, 2nd, and most of 3rd quarters. The English curriculum is actually very good and teaches grammar.

All in all, enter this place at your own risk.

Being that this school is a private one, and teaches its students in an unique way that is centered around classical thinking, and the fact that this school is for those with exceeding intelligence for their age, I wouldnt say this school supports those who dont learn in one way that well. I mean, teachers do go over things in class if you ask them to, and allow you to come back after class to ask questions, but, overall, it doesnt do this as well as other schools, in my opinion.

Ive been in this school for two years now, and ive not seen more than one case of bullying. Through things like the fifteen outcomes and stuff taught by teachers, bullying is pretty rare here. Its a pretty controlled environment, except for the occasional jokes made by students to make fun of others. There is really no physical or serious verbal bullying here though.

The school has to much homework in the upper grades, 3-5 and memorization of material, coral response. There is no differential education even though they offer above grade level classes. It is very strict and does not allow for creativity. They teach character but the administration does not follow or model what they teach. I have had two children in this school but will be pulling them out this year.

Our two children are in their second year at Thales, and we're very happy with nearly everything so far. We currently have one child in Thales elementary and one child in Thales middle/high.

The facilities are new, clean, and well appointed. Administrative staff are competent, professional, responsive, knowledgable, and helpful. Teachers are passionate, knowledgable, and illustrate through their actions that they genuinely care about their students' success. Curriculum is comprehensive and challenging.

After years of frustration with Wake County Public Schools (yearly redistricting, apathetic teachers, unresponsive and indifferent administrators, dumbed down curriculum, and a system geared toward teaching to the lowest common denominator) we are thrilled with the positive changes we've seen in our children since coming to Thales. Our children are actually excited to go to school in the morning and are happy, energetic, and full of good things to say when we pick them up in the afternoon. That speaks volumes, as it's a stark contrast to what we experienced while our children attended public schools. Our only regret is waiting as long as we did to transition our children to Thales.

Transition to Thales Academy has been smooth and well orchestrated. It is small which is what we looking for not the 3000 student high school enrollment of typical Wake Cty schools. I'm a student at Thales and I feel as if I am Just another student here. Teachers aren't experienced and are usually just teachers who graduated college and have no where to go. Small classrooms and an advanced curriculum is what they boast but in reality it's a typical high school curriculum. The difference between public school and Thales is that public schools have basic needs that Thales doesn't give such as clubs and experienced teachers. I am hoping to leave Thales after this year.

This is a GREAT school! Children are placed in classes based on their abilities. There is a heavy emphasis on grammar so the children can develop good writing skills. Learning is not geared to a test like it is in the public schools. Children take achievement tests at the end of the year and the children from Thales score much higher on these tests versus the eog tests administered in the public school. My child LOVES this school!

Our kids have been at Thales for several years now and we have been very happy. The school's small size and overall approach create a very nurturing environment. The teachers are amazing. The academics are much more rigorous than in public schools in the area, and there are no EOGs to worry about! But the school's results on the Iowa Test of Basic Schools (which you can see on the school's website) are very impressive. Most of our kids' teachers have previously taught in public schools.

We love this school! We've had amazing, experienced teachers and our kids have thrived. The academic environment is fast paced, but our kids have met the challenge and have done really well. The behavior standards are pretty strict, but that lets the kids focus on learning.

This school is nothing but extraordinary! My daughter entered in Kindergarten and unless our job status change in the Triangle causing us to move, we will not consider any other school. I love how the school embrace diversity, has high expectations for the students academically and how they nurture a relationship with the child and parent. The parent/teacher communication is exceptional. Kudos to Thales for having a vibrant network of teachers that care about their students and their future.

Please also be wary of reviews like the September 2, 2014, one. As mentioned before, look out for folks with an axe to grind with Bob Luddy, but no direct knowledge of what the school is really like. Mr. Luddy's personal viewpoints have minimal bearing on day to day life at the school. Thales is a great school. There is no political indoctrination going on and, since the school is non-profit, you don't have to worry about funding Bob Luddy's political agenda if you send your kid to Thales.

If you would like to send your child to a school where teachers have little experience, are devalued with the stress filled environment of yearly renewal of contracts based on little performance data, and where the administration and founders do not believe in person relationships with families......HAVE AT IT. Students are limited in what they are offered as far as extracurricular offerings. The lack of accreditation for this private school, shows little evidence the teachers are qualified nor do they have evidence of their practices showing effectiveness relating to the CCSS, which is now a federally adopted standardized curriculum for 47 states in the US. The founder, himself is entrenched with the most elite community and political members of anyone in the outlying areas. He owns a very affluent business and has moved far away from ensuring these schools provide quality educational environments for children. This school was founded based on the need for diversification, with little cultural diversity whatsoever. Cultural diversity is not an important factor and the tiny bubble these students experience of culture is detrimental.

We started our two oldest children at Thales last year ('12-'13 school year) and we have loved it. Our oldest was starting the 3rd grade and our middle child was starting Kindergarten. We started looking around at various schools due to our oldest struggling at two different public schools and teachers trying to label him as ADD/ADHD. Doctors said it seemed like it was environmental and we should try private schooling or home schooling. We settled on Thales and have not regretted the choice at all. Both of our boys did very well last year despite a tougher curriculum and grading structure. Our oldest has shown no signs of disrupting class or any other problems the public school teachers would tell us about. Communication with the teachers is excellent as we get multiple emails every week letting us know exactly what is going on. They just changed to a year-round schedule. Some people love it, some don't care for it. We didn't have any preference one way or the other. But both our boys are doing well again this year (4th and 1st grade now) and our youngest will be starting Kindergarten next year. We recommend Thales to anyone who asks about schools in the area.

School is great academically and strives to offer a good assortment of clubs and after school activities but it might not be for everyone. The school does not have a gymnasium though there is a multi-purpose room with a rubberized floor. There is no cafeteria but the school partners with a company to provide lunches, if this is desired. The children eat in the classroom. There are no real organized sports and the children do not take EOG's though they do participate, instead, in a nationally normed test called the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) so that you know how your child is performing compared to many other schools in many other states in the nation (better than EOG, if you ask me) . The students here tend to have more homework than their public school counterparts, as far as I can tell. Perhaps the best aspect of the school is the notion of the idea that students go to classes that suit them, based on performance. Have a high performer in Math? Send them +1 or +2 grades above their age? Have a low performer in a subject? Send then -1 or -2 grades to help them cement the information that needs to be there so that future classes can be built on top.

We started at this school this past year due to bullying at our previous private school that was not addressed. Thales does a great job of keeping that from occurring, and allowing students a positive experience. Their curriculum along with their class structure is worth every penny and the school is less expensive than other private schools in the area. The character education and community participation are teaching so mcuh about making our society better. My son is thrilled with his experience and excited that they are going to be opening a high school soon for him to continue his education there.

We have attended Thales academy for 2 years and it has exceeded our expectations. It is a K-9 school currently (will go to 12) and both my middle and elementary children have improved academically since attending there. The style of teaching and curriculum demands have improved their study habits as well. The drama, chorus, and band programs are excellent! They add a lot to the school. With under 500 students in elementary/middle it is a size school we really enjoy. It has truly been a gem of a find for our family, we are very happy with the consistent striving for excellence the principal and staff put forth.
