West Ashley High School is a community school built around academics, athletics, and extracurricular activites (clubs/organizations). Inside the walls of the building are a group of educators - teachers, counselors, student concern specialists, student support resources, admin, and staff- all of these people foster our earned Excellent Rating! I wear two hats at WAHS, School Counselor and parent. Both my children graduated from WAHS and I always felt supported and heard as a parent. As a "forever" member of the West Ashley Community, I am a strong believer in supporting your community schools. Go Wildcats!!

I have worked at WAHS for 25 years and had my child attend there.

As a teacher, I feel safe and well-supported at WAHS. As a parent of a former student and class valedictorian, WAHS provided my son with numerous AP and PLTW (Project Lead The Way) engineering classes. My son was able to enter college with 27 credit hours leading him to be able to major in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics and graduate in 4 years. He had a fantastic experience at WAHS. There are so many clubs and teams to join. There is a major focus on the social/emotional needs of students and staff. His teachers challenged and supported him.

The diversity at WAHS is what makes it such a special place to work and learn.

This is my sixteenth year at the school, and my connection here is both professional and personal. I am getting ready for my youngest daughter to enter ninth grade, which means this will be my third child to attend West Ashley. I have watched this school through many lenses over the years. I have taught here, raised kids here, and grown alongside the community. That long view matters, and it shapes how I show up every day.

Throughout my time here, I have always felt supported by the school, the surrounding community, and the district. That support has allowed me to build a program that has taken time, patience, and trust. What started as a classroom has grown into something students, families, and the community recognize and believe in. That shared investment has helped position our work as a pillar locally, and it has opened doors for state and national recognition. None of that happens alone. It happens because people consistently say yes to students and to the work.

In the classroom, learning is hands on and relationship driven. It looks like students learning to manage pressure, communicate clearly, and recover when things do not go as planned. We cook, we clean, we reset, and we try again. The goal goes beyond technical skill. It is about confidence, accountability, and learning how to show up for others. Those lessons stay with students long after they leave the room, and they are the same lessons that keep me invested in this school after sixteen years.

As a teacher at West Ashley High School, I cannot say enough good things about the students, teachers, support staff, and environment as a whole. Everyone there is so supportive and enjoys what they do. As with anything, you could find qualms about it. However, overall it is a school where teachers care about their students, administrators care about their teachers, and we all work together to give students the best education (both in academics and in life skills) possible. I cannot recommend this school enough!

Bonus points for the Wild Kitties program which offers top tier education to the pre-schoolers of staff members and the community. They do an amazing job of incorporating them into the atmosphere of West Ashley in many different ways - they attend pep-rallies, High Schoolers eat lunch with them, they play games with them, our Child Development class assist with creating engaging activities, and so much more. It is an amazing opportunity for the pre-schoolers and High Schoolers (as well as the staff who get to experience having their children right down the hall).

I am proud to be an alumna of WAHS. In addition to being a former student, I have also been an undergraduate and graduate student intern at WAHS, and am a current employee and parent. I have been fortunate to personally see the growth over 15 years at WAHS from multiple lenses. Staff want to work here because we treat each other as a small community and family. So much so, that several former students have returned in staff positions. Regarding the student body's opportunities, we currently have 34 options for AP/DE advanced coursework. We also house the WACAS (West Ashley Centered for Advanced Studies) on our campus, where students are able to participate in career focused coursework and earn certifications in the following fields: welding, auto mechanics, media technology, engineering, biomedical, health, and sports sciences, mechatronics, and computer science. Our fine arts offerings include various levels of art, theatre, band, string, chorus, and piano. We also offer ROTC and 3 world languages (Spanish, French, German). Our WAHS CTE offerings include business, culinary, computer, nail tech, and child development/early childhood education. WAHS currently has 32 clubs and 19 athletics offerings. Our innovative FlexMod schedule allows us to support students with additional help during ILT (Individual Learning Time). This looks like meeting with subject area teachers and/or peer tutors for additional academic support. For students who may need more intensive academic support, we offer the GAP program. For students who academically excel, we offer the School Choice program called the Scholars Academy, which is a partnership with CofC. Outside of academics, WAHS has a counseling department that conducts small groups, Wellness Wednesdays, PACK classroom lessons, student check ins, and so much more. Members of our Student Support Team work together and partner with community partnerships (such as MUSC) to ensure all students SEL needs are met. WAHS has hosted our community event Trunk or Treat for several years, and new this year, had our first Holiday Winter Market. We have truly become a neighborhood school that anyone should be proud to attend! We have made excellent gains with CCR, our graduation rate, ML student population, EOCs, and so much more! Ultimately, we showcase a spectrum of offerings at WAHS and have something for everyone!

This is my first year at West Ashley but it is by far the best at addressing all student, staff, and community needs. The Administration tailors its leadership around their core stakeholders and it is evident in the Excellent rating they have achieved. What you can't find on the data sheet is how collaborative and student and community-centered that the faculty and staff are. They are open to thinking outside the box to meet students where they are at. WAHS is a stand-out school in comparison to so many other high schools in Charleston that may just focus on optics or have an overemphasis on athletics instead of its entire student body. A great place to be!

I have taught at WAHS since its doors opened. This school is a dynamic learning environment. WAHS is nothing short of outstanding. From the moment you walk through the doors, you can feel the sense of pride, community, and possibility that defines the entire campus. West Ashley High School has one of the most supportive learning environments I have encountered. The teachers genuinely enjoy what they do and go above and beyond to keep the students engaged. The level of supports offered to the students is something I did not know was possible. The multiple different counselors on site as well as the option of receiving support from external providers while at school creates a continuum of care that supports the student's mental health and therefore encourages improved academic success. There is a reason this school has won the school spirit competition for CCSD for two years running. They care about their students and their community.

The teachers, admin, and staff are great at what they do. The kids, like most kids in all schools these days, lack intrinsic motivation to self engage in learning and the teachers will never be able to compete with social media and games on phones and devices. So, with that being said, in the current school climate, West Ashley High is at the top in public schools in my opinion.

The support system at West Ashley is great. Admin and teachers work together to help students get the assistance needed whether it is academics, mental health, or behavior needs. Students face a lot of struggles that most people don not understand within their daily lives and individuals familiar with the student work together to provide needed support.

Admin is proactive working with teachers in all aspects of student achievement.

West Ashley High School is a remarkable school that has shown its commitment to the community with improved Social Emotional Learning in courses such as the "PACK" homeroom classes. This course is meets everyday to act as a support and monitor for progress and grades in core classes and elective classes that students are taking. Family engagement can be seen in the events that the sports/arts programs put out as well as school wide events such as the Holiday Tree lighting and Trunk or Treat. There are also multiple opportunities throughout the year for families to meet teachers whether it is at open houses, AP/Dual Enrollment info nights, the Center for Advanced Studies and Career and Technology Education info nights, and the awards ceremonies at the end of the year.

I recently graduated in the class of 2024 and was a student at this school for my junior and senior year. Coming from a very highly rated school in Colorado I can see how awful this school is. Theres a few amazing teachers at this school who deserve much better. But in my experience this school is extremely unorganized And stuck in the 1980s. From having to write hand written letters and e-mails to get kids out of school to the receptionist not knowing how to count change after I had to pay all my senior fees in cash. My counselor told me to have my mom stop emailing her about concerns and refused to reschedule a meeting with me as I had to miss the day for a doctors appointment.
I also got a day off in school suspension for missing a day of school due to a doctors appointment even after I provided them with a parent letter and doctors note they refused believe I wasnt skipping even though I had 6 absences and 2 tardies the entire year.
The school is also disgusting, whoever cleans the bathrooms does an awful job and cant ever seem to restock the soap and paper towels let alone clean the floors or toilets. I dont know when the last time the classroom floors have ever been cleaned.
After bringing up a stalking and harassment incident to admin with proof of who it was and what they said the admin refused to handle it and ended up getting the person being stalked suspended for harassment and refused to pull cameras or do anything.
Its also the kids at this school. There are more fights in a month than I saw in my 2 years at my previous high school. In fact there was a single day that had twice as many fights. The kids here also have no clue how to act or be respectful and responsible. Im not saying I was perfect and I get these are teenagers but people need to have some common sense.
There are some incredible teachers at this school who I have loved and deserve so much better than this school. In fact one of those teachers resigned at the end of this school year. There are also teachers who take classes that have so much potential and ruin it by not doing anything besides watching YouTube videos and answering questions.
I hope the new principal changes the culture at this school considering I saw Mr. Cumback a total of 4 times in my 2 years.

I went to this school for my Junior and Senior years and it was fine. But my younger sister is still there and the new schedule is terrible. Nobody is a fan of being forced to open up about their feelings. Theres a whole class where if you dont you could not graduate if you dont participate. I find this extremely unhelpful and just straight up rude. We go there to learn. Nobody liked SEL and nobody likes PACK. Its stupid. Do better.

This school is the lowest school in Charleston County that gets funding. It does not get federal or state funding. In most schools, the parents fund to supplement for the lack of funding. Unfortunately, the parents are unable to fund. I went to West Ashley High 10 years ago. My boyfriend's kids go there now and I can see little change. Yes, they have career advancement classes that will get the children ahead once they graduate but every school has that now. The drugs and violence are ramped. When I went, teachers would throw you a work sheet to do. I read Romeo and Juliet three times at this school...I came from a private school before entering. The academics are behind. The children are developmentally behind. As someone who went here, I would never send my kids here.

I was on the student committee that helped select the new colors and mascot for this school before there was even a building for it. It was a bad idea from the beginning to force two rival schools to go to school together. CCSD has a long history of making poor choices, never in the best interests of their students, and judging from the past ~15 years since this school opened, it shows. My brothers and I all took our GEDs instead because honestly we had no patience for the shenanigans, and are better for it because we arent traumatized by all the horrible things that have occurred there over the years. A waste of what was once a gorgeous campus.

My four years here were absolute hell. I frequently came home frustrated or crying due to how poorly managed this school is and how little the faculty care. If you want your child to have the best academic experience possible, don't touch this school with a 10-foot pole. If you just want your kid out of the house and not your responsibility for 7-8 hours your kid will feel right at home here.

The students run the show here and it ain't pretty. They pitch fits when asked to not be on their phones for more than 2 seconds and the teachers always end up giving in because it's easier. If your child had a bad attitude before coming here they'll leave with an even worse attitude.

There was a girl that had been involved in literally every single fight that had happened during my four years here and she was given a few weeks detention at the absolute worst. If your child is being bullied move to another school as the faculty here don't care or can't do anything.

Our daughter is loving West Ashley High! Her teachers are wonderful. The principal is very engaged and makes himself available 24/7. There is one difficult person, the guidance secretary. She is not kind. She makes people feel really dumb. I have even seen her mistreat her coworkers, so dont go in there unprepared. It helps if you are really nice to her. Other than that one lady, the teachers, counselors, coaches, and staff are all amazing in our experience so far!!

Amazing leadership under Principal Runyon. Truly cares about every student, teacher and staff member and safety is his number #1 concern. I have served at the PTSO (Parent Teacher Student Organization) Team Leader and SIC (School Improvement Council) for the past two years and have enjoyed the unity we have created as a team. School is experiencing amazing growth and the opportunities are endless with the new Center for Advanced Studies addition slated for 2020. CAS classes begin this fall allowing students to complete first two years of college while in high school. Be involved. This is our first year at West Ashley. Both the school faculty and the students have been extremely welcoming to my daughters. The guidance office was great at getting them registered appropriately. I have had communication from most of their teachers and feel that they would be there for my girls if they needed extra help. The principal is amazing at keeping parents informed. It seems like they are truly dedicated to their no bullying policy and seem to be open to feedback from parents. From what I have seen, they have good extracurricular programs with enthusiastic and dedicated teachers. So far, I would recommend this school.

The school is plain awful with communicating. During finals the exemption policy changed pretty much everyday and my daughter had no idea what schedule they were on and neither did her teachers. The school is abysmal and no one should send their child there.

West Ashley High School is under valued and under appreciated. The Advance Placement and Dual Credit courses are exceptional. The engineering course offering is excellent. The NJROTC program and it's instructors are a top notch, award winning operation. The Math department, tutoring and principal are worth their weight in gold!

My son will be a junior in the upcoming school year. He has surrounded himself with great friends who share his vision in achieving their future goals and that has made the difference. Also, my husband and I stay involved with the school and interact with the teachers through conferences and emails. So far we have had no major difficulties. As with all school environments, there are always a few bad apples but we deal with them. Kudos to the Young Gentlemen's Club which is one of many positive organizations at the school.

I agree with the review posted 2/9/10. There is LOTS of apathy at this school. The CP classes are not geared towards students who plan to attend a 4-year college. The Guidance department is just taking up space in the building. The "guidance" my child received was a joke. If you're shopping for a school for your college-bound student, look elsewhere.
